Growing up in Los Angeles, Toni Tipton-Martin lived for a time with her Southern-born grandmother who happened to be a professional chef, and who exposed her to what would eventually become a lifelong passion. As Editor-in-Chief of Cook's Country Magazine and as author of books like The Jemima Code, Jubilee, and last year's Juke Joints, Jazz Clubs, and Juice, Toni has spent much of her career as a kind of culinary detective, exploring the legacy and impact of African American food culture. Her work has garnered two James Beard Awards, a Julia Child Award, and just about every other food award there is, and she's also a frequent host of the Cook's Country television show and, recently, a podcast series called 100 Proof: The Golden Age of Cocktails. Sid talks to Toni about some of the memorable women and recipes she's come across in her work, her grandmother's cornbread dressing, and her incredible new book with America's Test Kitchen, When Southern Women Cook: History, Lore, and 300 Recipes with Contributions from 70 Women Writers. David Allee wears many hats: club owner, musician, music producer, and community non-profit leader, to name a few. As the owner of the Jazz Kitchen for nearly 30 years and as the Director of Indy Jazz Fest for over a decade, David has helped to curate literally thousands of jazz performances in Indianapolis by national and regional artists. The Jazz Kitchen has received multiple “Best 100 Jazz Clubs in the World” by Downbeat Magazine, and its sonics and ambience have inspired dozens of artists to record live albums in the venue. David, along with jazz artist/community leader Rob Dixon, re-energized the Indy Jazz Fest over a decade ago, and has continued to grow the Fest and the Indy Jazz Foundation, “to preserve the legacy and promote the future of jazz in Indianapolis.” David and I had a conversation in 2022 about his life, what inspired him to start the Jazz Kitchen, and his vision for preserving and growing Indianapolis' rich jazz history.

Daniel Johnson im Promitalk mit Frank Stiller. Daniel Johnson??? Genau!

(Rated PG-13 for lots of stress and a few family-friendly zombies.) 29:07 | Comedy, Romance LOGLINE Two dancers who start by sharing the stage and end up sharing a whole lot more—navigate stress, loss, and life in New York. Showing us the magic that can happen when life writes your story for you. STORYLINE Austin, a veteran Six Flag dancer, meets Marideth, a rookie, during a Six Flags New Jersey dance contract that has them dress up as fun party zombies. Marideth knows of this wonderful Austin only by name until that fateful day when Austin knocks on the door and Marideth answers in her finest weiner dog shorts. Bonded over their passion for dance, a similar friend group, and similar moments of loss—for Marideth—meeting Austin didn't just connect her to a set of wheels. It connected her to the type of guy who always makes sure she is safe and has a deep concern for her well being. At first, these two take it slow because of their fever pitch schedules. But, as their love grows, Austin makes a few attempts to show Marideth how much he cares. Including, a failed attempt to dazzle Marideth with the magic of the Rockefeller Christmas tree and a spectacular first date at a popular Manhattan speakeasy and Playa Betty's. This leads to the two of them becoming official just two days before Valentine’s Day—making their shift from friends to lovers as effortless as their dancing. After months of waiting to find the right moment to connect, their two lives finally get in-sync and they realize the most important thing they have is each other. ...And TikTok. PLOT KEYWORDS Love, Dating Podcasts, Romance Podcasts, Couples, Dating, Single, Dancers, Six Flags, Zombies, New York, Jazz Clubs, Friendships, Rockefeller Christmas Tree QUOTES “We were in zombie make up as we got to know each other.” - Austin “We just care about each other so much.” - Marideth “Literally the majority of our relationship has been living with my parents.” - Marideth “What even is normal? Sometimes your story just writes itself. Let the writing happen.” - Marideth + Austin FUN FACT One of the reasons Marideth was so busy was because she was a swing in a show. A swing is a company member who understudies several chorus and/or dancing roles. If an understudy fills in for a lead role, a swing acts the parts normally performed by the understudy. Meaning, she had to learn them all. CREATOR Kassandra M. New York born bassist Alex Layne began his musical career in 1959 at Count Basies Night Club. After attending the High School of Music & Art, the 20 year old landed a job with the clubs house band headed by Steve Pulliam. Layne graduated with honors from Bronx Community College and continued his studies as a music major at Queens College. He has also studied privately with bassists Stuart Sanky, Ron Carter, and Alvin Bhrem. Basies Night Club was just the beginning for this extraordinary musician; he went on to be a major player on the N.Y. scene. He has appeared with some of the great musicians of our time from Coleman Hawkins and Max Roach to Freddy Hubbard and Cedar Walton. However, the bulk of his career has been spent accompanying the top vocalists of his time- Billy Eckstein, Carmen McRae, Gloria Lynn, Johnny Hartman, and Miriam Makeba, to name a few. His knowledge of music theory and its application to solo and group performance is of the highest order. He is a formidable performer both as soloist and as a member of a jazz rhythm section. His skills are evident on both the upright double bass and the electric bass guitar. His experience also includes time spent performing with folk, blues, and rhythm and blues artist too. Josh White, Jimmy Witherspoon, Little Anthony, and Imperials, are some of the artists that he has the pleasure of performing with. He is currently employed by the Jazz Foundation of America, performing in schools, hospitals, and Nursing Homes, as well as working with his own group in some of the prominent Jazz Clubs in New York.
Jazz writer Bob Blumenthal joins Lee to spin cuts from albums by two stellar pianists—Renee Rosnes and Kenny Barron. Inspired by the JazzTimes cover story on Seventh Avenue South, a notorious NYC jazz club owned by the Brecker Brothers in the late 70s and early 80s, Bob and Lee riff on important nightclubs from the history of jazz. This episode is sponsored by Inner Sanctum Audio.

Born in Zürich, Switzerland, on 26th of June 1986. Romano developed an early interest in music listening to old jazz musicians like Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley, Lou Donaldson, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane and many others. He began to play the saxophone at age 10 autodidactically. At the age of 12 he played in a funk/blues band with his older brother Alessandro who is a pianist. They won the second price at a newcomer contest. By the time he was 14 he performed with local jazz ensembles in different jazz clubs. In 2004 he moved to Bern, where he studied for one year with George Robert and for another with Andy Scherrer at the Swiss Jazz School. At this time he used to play in a quartet with his brother Alessandro on piano, Thomas Dürst on bass and Ueli Müller on drums and he took part in several school projects. In 2006 he went for an exchange to Sicily, Italy, to get to know better his second native country. Back to Switzerland he moved back to Zürich, where he continued his studies at the Jazz School Zürich taking lessons with Christoph Grab and Philippe Mall. In February 2008 he released his first album entitled "Remembering Bird - A Tribute to Charlie Parker", which he recorded at the Radio DRS Studio 2 with the great bassist Giorgos Antoniou, Alessandro Ricciardi and two musicians from the UK: Steve Brown (drummer Scott Hamilton quartet) and Steve Fishwick (trumpet – played with Anita ‘O Day, Cedar Walton). Romano played in several Jazzclubs, like Moods Zürich, Mehrspur, "Isebähndli" Baden, Jazzclub Thalwil, Chorus Lausanne, Jazzkantine Luzern, Jazznojazz festival and performed with the Swiss All-Star-Big-Band 2009 (Guillermo Klein).
