Warum ist Housing First keine Selbstverständlichkeit? „And it all meant this:  that there are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal, kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.“

In this intimate audio essay, Anne V Mühlethaler reflects on Rebecca Shaw's piercing observation about watching powerful men "burn the world down." Through her own journey of frustration and self-reflection, Anne explores how our childhood coping mechanisms shape adult perspectives on "us vs. them."Drawing from both psychological insights and Buddhist wisdom, Anne examines how the very qualities we despise in others might mirror parts of ourselves we'd rather not see. She weaves Dr. Guralnik's work on political polarization - how early experiences of "splitting" the world into all-good or all-bad persist into adulthood - with Buddhist teachings that offer a pathway forward through radical acceptance. From confronting her own "inner dictator" to embracing ancient wisdom about sitting with difficult emotions, Anne invites listeners to consider: What if the key to healing our divided world begins with acknowledging the complexity within ourselves?Selected links from episode: The opinion piece by Rebecca Shaw in the GuardianThe guest essay in the New York Times by Dr Orna Guralnik Wealth extremismTara Brach's article about inviting Mara to teaThe Metta View This episode is brought to you by AVM Consulting Struggling to connect with your audience? In today's special bonus episode of Nature Breaking you'll hear all about WWF's 2024 Living Planet Report. This bi-annual report functions as a check-up on the health of the Earth. Underpinning the report is the Living Planet Index, which monitors populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish around the world. This year the report found that monitored wildlife populations declined by an average of 73% since 1970. Importantly, this year's report also reveals that the Earth stands on the verge of tipping points for tropical forests and coral reefs that could have severe consequences for people and nature everywhere.  Joining the show to explain the Living Planet Report is Dr. Rebecca Shaw, WWF's chief scientist. Rebecca will walk us through the methodology of the report, what its key findings really mean for wildlife and ecosystems, and what we all can do together to put our planet on a more sustainable pathway. Link / Link HOJE NO GIRO SOBRE PESSOAS QUE FAZEM A MÍDIA: 10 - ...As pessoas somos nós mesmos! Amanda Gorman . . .you know what, I take it back.” — Jimmy Fallon That's high praise for the comedy writing duo of Rebecca Shaw and Ben Kronengold, from their former boss at NBC's “The Tonight Show,” where our podcast guests became the two youngest writers in that program's storied history and earned a shared spot on Variety's “Power of Young Hollywood Impact List” in 2021. Shaw and Kronengold began dating and writing together as freshmen at Yale University and capped their undergraduate career with a 2018 commencement address that went a little bit viral.  (Okay, it went a whole lotta viral – their speech was seen by more than 5 million people, and landed them an agent…and, eventually, their “Tonight Show” gig.)  Together, they've just published a disarmingly funny collection of essays, stories, and humor pieces called Naked in the Rideshare: Stories of Gross Miscalculations, which was hailed by actor and comedian Will Ferrell as “incredibly original, bizarre, and funny” prior to publication by William Morrow in November. Join us as we talk about what it means to find your voice in collaboration with your partner, and to take that voice to one of the most dynamic writing rooms in late night television – and beyond. The world is in the middle of the sixth mass extinction and this time it's being driven by human activity. Slowing it down will provide benefits for tackling climate change, and solutions to reign in global warming will help stem biodiversity loss. But this win-win scenario isn't straightforward to put into action. In December, world leaders gathered at COP15 in Montreal and agreed upon a new global biodiversity framework, with 23 targets including a goal of protecting 30% of all land, waters and oceans by 2030. The details on how that target will be implemented, however, are vague, and vast amounts of money will be needed to fund nature protection in biodiversity-rich, economically poor countries.  Akshat Rathi speaks with Rebecca Shaw, chief scientist at the World Wildlife Fund; Monica Medina, the US assistant secretary of state for oceans and international environmental and scientific affairs; and Bloomberg Green's Eric Roston, about what it means to protect biodiversity, and who will fund it.   Read a transcript of this episode, here. This month, we've put down the books and picked up the remote control! Guests Patrick Lenton and Fury join us to discuss a show "based on characters created by Sir Terry Pratchett": 2021's The Watch. Sam Vimes was a street kid in Ankh-Morpork who joined the Watch to kill its Captain and free the imprisoned members of his gang. But he had a change of heart. Twenty years later, he's still there - a washed-up drunk of a Captain, whose force of misfits have almost nothing to police since the criminal Guilds were all legalised. But during his latest assignment - to find a missing library book - he sees someone who died twenty years ago. Soon the Watch is up to their necks in dragons, ancient artefacts and magical experiments gone wrong, and it'll take all their cunning and heart to get to the bottom of it...plus a little help from noblewoman-turned-vigilante, Lady Sybil Ramkin. After a long road through development hell, initially with Pratchett himself at the helm, The Watch eventually emerged as a surprisingly "punk rock police procedural"; a brightly-coloured Dungeon-punk explosion which wears its queerness on its sleeve. The Watch remixes characters and concepts from the books into something so different that fans and friends of Pratchett quickly disowned it. The critical reaction was middling at best, and it took six months for it to be released on Pratchett's home soil. But is it any good? Could you divorce yourself from the source material? If so, does The Watch work on its own terms? Is it funny? Is it comprehensible? Is watching it a good time? Which bits got up your nose, and which did you love? Who was your favourite character, and why was it Cheery? And given we barely scratched the surface of talking about it this episode - should we do a bonus mini-series, discussing it episode by episode? Let us know by joining the conversation, using the hashtag #Pratchat52. Guest Patrick Lenton is currently Deputy Editor: Arts + Culture for The Conversation, and previously part of the editorial staff at Junkee. He is also a freelance writer whose work has spanned journalism, theatre, fiction and comedy. As well as at Junkee and various independent work has appeared in The Guardian, His most recent short story collection is Sexy Tales of Palaeontology from Subbed In, and he writes the newsletter All the Hetereosexual Nonsense I Was Forced To Endure with Rebecca Shaw. You can find Patrick on Twitter as @PatrickLenton, and his handy LinkTree will help you find his other stuff. Guest Fury is a writer, illustrator and performer who previously appeared on Pratchat in #Pratchat19 (Soul Music) and #Pratchat29 (The Last Continent) - our last in-person episode, recorded in the before times! Their live multi-disciplinary show Gender Euphoria toured Australia in 2019 and 2020, and their book I Don't Understand How Emotions Work is (probably) still available. You can find out more about them at furywrites.com, or follow them on Twitter as @fury_writes. Their first TV show, Crazy Fun Park, is currently in production and scheduled to premiere on ABC ME and ABC iview in late 2022. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our website. Next month we're heading to one of the books that (sort of) provided a big chunk of inspiration for The Watch, and a fan favourite, frequently topping rankings of the Discworld series: Night Watch! Meet the original Carcer Dun, Jocasta Wiggs, young Sam Vimes, and - eventually - Young Sam Vimes... Send us your questions via the hashtag #Pratchat52, or via email to chat@pratchatpodcast.com.

All the President's Minutes is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute 135, I join an author, one of Australia's most infamous satirists, and a member of The Chaser, Charles Firth. Charles and I discuss what it's like to be on the ground in a swing state talking to Trump supporters, how nice it would be to be a black belt in shamelessness, and finally that this feels like an action movie, where the typewriters are the weapons of choice. *About Charles Firth* Charles Firth is an Australian comedian, best known as a member of The Chaser productions CNNNN and The Chaser's War on Everything. *Twitter:* @charlesfirth ( https://twitter.com/charlesfirth ) & @chaser ( https://twitter.com/chaser ) *Websites:* The Chaser & The Shovel present *War On 2020* ( https://chaser.com.au/events/war-on-2020/ ) *Chaser Digital Presents: WAR ON 2020* *War on 2020* is a series of 13 sketches about the year that will be distributed online. Firth said, "The demand for content that pours shit on 2020 is so immense that I'm pretty sure the NBN will collapse the moment we release the first video. We got Josh Frydenberg to help us work out our download numbers, and he reckons 60 billion Australians will watch each video." The *War on 2020,* features an all-stars line up of the best satirical comedians in the country, directed by *Jenna Owen* and *Victoria Zerbst* (SBS The Feed), and written and performed by *Mark Humphries* (ABC 7:30), *Nina Oyama* (Utopia), *Sami Shah* (ABC Radio), *Steph Tisdell* (Deadly Funny), *Nat Damena* (SBS The Feed) and *James Schloeffel* (The Shovel). The series will also utilise the writing talents of *Evan Williams* and *Rebecca Shaw*. It will be produced by *Charles Firth* (The Chaser) and DOPed by *Chloe Angelo* (At Home Alone Together). Executive Producer *Charles Firth* said, "Everyone knows 2020 was the worst year ever, and so what better way to send it off than with a withering takedown by Australia's top scientists and medical professionals. Unfortunately, none of them were available, so instead we've hired a whole lot of satirists to dress up as scientists and doctors, which is good because they're much cheaper." *War on 2020* will be released online through social media and on the *Chaser* and *Shovel* sites throughout December. There will also be two ticketed live Zoom performances of the show on 1 *1th & 12th December*. The Good Grow Great Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2020 30:02

I get a ton of questions lately about working from home and growing passive income. What's great is that I see a whole range of questions, like: Thalia, how do you stay motivated? How do I keep my kids from driving me insane? How am I supposed to set goals when I don't know what's going to happen? How can I possibly get everything done at home? What's the best way to earn money on the side? I love all these questions. It's funny though, isn't it? How we're doing similar things we did pre-COVID and just going about in our lives, but because everything's changed now, we're much more aware of the things that we like and don't like. It's like someone just plugged a speaker phone into all our activities and it screams back, “Hey, this is just NOT working!” Everything feels bigger in smaller quarters. And because of this, you may feel like things are just running on a loop and happiness is like a one-off privilege that you have to keep fighting for. What I discover about work and business, though, is that they will likely suffer when you're out of sorts, and definitely when you're unhappy.  So how DO you stay sane, successful, AND happy at home while getting ahead and growing your business?   Spend a ton of time on the things that give you happiness and meaning, and a timed amount on the things that don't. The odd thing about working from home, is that no one ever talks about treating your day like there's an external time-table that runs the whole show (even though life DOES keep moving on)! It's YOUR show. You get to decide. Of course, there are things that are not always fun to do but needs to get done (like brushing your teeth and looking at how you did in your business). AND on the things that make you feel like you're on vacation! Whether that's one hour or one week on a particular goal, it's your call.   Find ways to love the progress first, BEFORE you find the profit. I think we've done ourselves a disservice whenever people throw around things like, “Love what you do, THEN you'll be happy”. First of all, I think this is super confusing. It makes us chase that momentary high that we associate with loving something. And it focuses on already loving or hating something, versus cultivating that appreciation for what you're meant to do. In reality, you won't always love everything WHILE you're at it. For instance, I love my kids, but I honestly just don't like what comes with parenting. Love is not the same as like. I love working out as a whole. But I don't always like waking up to it. So if you want to crush your work and business goals, or even earn more, find ways to make the long days … easier, lighter, or more fun.   Know that passive income IS possible, after targeted activity. There's a misconception being thrown around right now that passive income is … all just about sitting back in your PJs and watching things roll in. Um … sorry, but that's not (never has been and never will be) the case. And this misconception drives many entrepreneurs into misery, thinking, “Why is it not working?” Yes, passive income is possible, but only AFTER you've put in the appropriate amount of activity, investment, and energy and time upfront. What this means is that if your income or business is still going nowhere, the things you've done upfront might need some tweaking. This is true for both offline and online income. I'll talk about mistakes to avoid when you're creating passive income streams in the upcoming months. --- Before we keep going, be sure to not miss a beat and hit the FOLLOW or SUBSCRIBE button. --- Which is why today I want to bring you a whole range of experience from multiple women business owners who have found amazing ways to: Work from home while making authentic work relationships. Climate change is risky business – but how risky is it for business? With temperatures predicted to rise anywhere from one to four degrees this century, droughts, floods and extreme weather present risks that will impact American families, businesses and habitats. Rebecca Shaw of the Environmental Defense Fund sees a global attitude shift towards adaptation. One example is the wine industry. “As climate shifts, there will be some places where wine grapes are grown today that won't be suitable in the future,” she says. A move north may be imminent, and some growers are already doing that. But as competition for resources heats up between agribusiness, communities and wildlife, sacrifices may be in order. “We're really going to have to think about what we're going to grow here,” cautions Shaw. “Some crops are going to be less viable because water will be more scarce in the future.” Later in the program, financial industry experts discuss shifts on Wall Street wrought by climate change. As Lisa Goldberg of Aperio notes, climate change awareness is nothing new. “But in terms of its impact on economic markets, I think that it's just really now coming to the consciousness of mainstream investors.” Recent high-profile divestments have put large-cap fossil fuel companies under Wall Street’s microscope. But is shareholder pressure an effective tool for change? “Just having that conversation publicly is a huge step,” says shareholder advocate Andrew Behar. “I think it’s a real milestone.” Guests - Part I: Stephen Bennett, Senior Vice President, Verisk Climate Noah Diffenbaugh, Associate Professor, School of Earth Sciences, Stanford University Rebecca Shaw, Associate Vice President and Lead Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund Guests - Part II: Andrew Behar, CEO, As You Sow Lisa Goldberg, Director of Research, Aperio Group; former Director of Research, MSCI Josh Schein, Senior Portfolio Manager, Morgan Stanley

A study by Duke University, the Environmental Defense Fund, and other entities suggests that a warmer California will likely be a drier California, making it harder for forests and rangelands and other ecosystems to develop as they have previously. The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions' Linwood Pendleton and his study co-author Rebecca Shaw were guests on an hour-long broadcast on the NPR affiliated radio program, Jefferson Exchange.
