Breaking the NeedleThe average person makes choices that move the needle. How can you become someone who generates so much momentum that you break the needle?OPENING QUOTE:We always hear about, build your life around the things you love, build your business around the things you love. But that's really hard to do because for me, I'm really passionate and intense and I love a million things, so that list would be infinite. But, instead of that, what about, what do you hate not doing? ”—Jay FerruggiaGUEST BIO: Jay Ferruggia is the host of the Renegade Radio podcast, a top 20 fitness podcast on Apple Podcasts with over six million downloads. Jay has been helping people become the strongest version of themselves since 1994, and today is heralded as a coach of coaches, trainer of trainers, and champion of mastering not only physical strength but emotional and mental strength, as well. His work has appeared in Men's Health, Muscle & Fitness, Fast Company, Huffington Post, Entrepreneur, and on ESPN and CBS.Links:WebsitePodcastInstagramFacebookTwitterLinkedInCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[3:37] - Do More By Doing LessEmbracing minimalism has helped Jay Ferruggia excelWe all love to embrace the hustle of achieving 100 different things at a time. But the truth is that many of the people who have reached the pinnacle of success do it by focusing on one thing and doing that thing with everything they've got. [12:13] - The Daily Non-NegotiablesWhat's essential for your daily joy and progress?Take a look at your life and the things you're most passionate about. It might be exercise, or spending time outside, or laughing. Make these things non-negotiable as part of your day. Need to make room for them? Drop other things, but never the non-negotiable things that bring you joy.[22:54] - The Three Forms of AwarenessAwareness of Self, Awareness of Others, Awareness of SituationIntrinsic motivation doesn't require someone else telling you to work hard— it comes from awareness of self, awareness of others, and awareness of your situation. When you know what you're capable of, what others need from you, and where you stand (and where you need to be), you can accomplish anything.[31:12] - The Power and Limits of PassionHow do you turn passion into playmaking?Jay is passionate about hip hop, but that doesn't mean he could get into a recording booth and drop a Grammy-winning rap album. So how do we know our passions could turn into careers? The simple answer is that we don't. All we can do is choose a path and give it 110% and see where we end up.[35:25] - The Go-To Daily PurposeMake your purpose other peopleWhen you wake up in the morning and for whatever reason you don't feel like you have a strong sense of purpose, what do you do? For Jay, he defaults to helping others. There are always people that need help, and by the end of an act of service you'll almost always have re-centered yourself on what matters most to you.[49:04] - The Big SecretMost people actually want you to succeedPeople who succeed love to talk about the ‘haters' that wanted to see them fail. But the truth is that most people are good people, and we're energized by each other's successes. Once you realize that, it's not about ego— it's about sharing your gift with people.RESOURCES:[0:31] The Power of Playing Offense[1:47] Renegade Radio Podcast[3:37] The 80/20 Principle, The ONE Thing, and Essentialism[4:41] Bedros Keuilian[13:23] Self Control App[24:04] Seth Godin[30:49] My Personal Journey to Hell and Back, BlogFOLLOW:We'd love to hear your thoughts on today's episode. On this week's Q&A episode we cover training around injuries, building muscle, nutrition, music, grooming and more. I also give a brief explanation of how and why I ended up moving out of LA and down to Austin. And then out of Austin to our new temporary home. Grab your headphones (preferably with a wire to avoid EMF's!), take the dogs for a walk (or go adopt one) and enjoy. Questions answered: Should training intensity change when on a calorie deficit for fat loss? What is the best number of reps for a beginner to build muscle? How often do you incorporate pushups into your workouts? Would you even bother with anyone who’s consistently lost your trust? Do you believe in longer fasts of 48-72 hours? The Way I am, Lose Yourself, Til I Collapse, or other? Do you still write programs where volume starts low and progresses to higher over weeks? Top 3 leg exercises for a mid 40’s guy with a sensitive low back? What is an “effective rep” and how many per muscle group per week for hypertrophy? What kind of natural grooming products do I use? Why did I leave California and move to Texas? Then leave? This episode is brought to you by biOptimizers. Can you bench press and keep your shoulders safe? What do you do when you hit a plateau in your training? How often should you rotate exercises? How do you build muscle with only bodyweight? Can you make gains with dumbbells that only go up to 50 pounds? If so, how? Should you get lean or try to gain muscle first? This episode is brought to you by biOptimizers. Whether it’s Kobe Bryant, The Rock, or Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Ferruggia knows that you need to think like an athlete to make the difference in your life. Whether working out, fixing your diet, getting enough sleep or embracing personal development, you can always improve. This episode is a lesson in how to be a better entrepreneur, employee, boss, dad and athlete, from a world-renowned strength and conditioning specialist. Watch the full episode on YouTube Jason Ferruggia grew up inspired by real life and fictional athletes such as The Ultimate Warrior, Bruce Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wolverine and any larger than life figure. His dad was interested in bodybuilding, and Jason gravitated towards lifting, motivated to train in-line with the innovative ethos of Dorian Yates at the time. He went to college with the intention of one day hosting SportsCenter on ESPN or directing films, as a communications major. However, it didn’t take long before he got bitten by the iron bug and ended up on pace to making a six-figure salary training people at 19 years old. Later on, he fully invested in his own personal development and moved to California, reinventing himself in the birthplace of physical culture. He’s since been training people in the ways of functional fitness and a basement CrossFit approach long before it became popular, but it’s always got results. As a world-renowned strength and conditioning specialist and host of the Renegade Radio Podcast, Jason Ferruggia aims to give you as the listener or reader the knowledge to build your body, strengthen your mind and optimise your life. He has contributed to broadcasts and publications such as Men’s Health, Muscle & Fitness, Men’s Fitness, Huffington Post, LiveStrong, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Shape, Entrepreneur, and shows on ESPN and CBS. For more information visit jasonferruggia.com Episode highlights: Why it’s sometimes important to reinvent yourself for the purpose of personal development and reboot your self-limiting beliefs. How you can differentiate between information sources to take what’s useful and reject what’s not, whether it’s physical training or personal development and other approaches to education. Why high level athletes may not be anywhere near as familiar with the importance of nutrition as you may think. How struggles in your past can be used for short term motivation, but why continuing to do this long term will be detrimental to your mental health. Corporate athletes and how your activity in the boardroom should be fuelled by the same thing as Kobe Bryant on the court. What movements, drills and workouts you need to make the most of your time with a busy schedule, while still giving yourself time to recover. Why your diet will not only shape you, but the types of foods often mean you can eat what you like as long as you’re concentrating mainly on real foods and single ingredients. Which rep ranges and volume options are the safest for your body and central nervous system when lifting and working out. The importance of sleep and why it will help every aspect of your fitness and daily life. Why you need to pay attention to your body and journal every detail to test what works for you and how diet, sleep, activity and everything else will bring benefits or detriment. Today's guest is one of the most well connected guys in the fitness game and his name is Jay Ferruggia. Jay is a strength and conditioning coach and has been in the fitness business for more than 20 years and has been featured in almost every major fitness publication out there from Men’s Health, Live Strong, Muscle & Fitness and Entrepreneur magazine. You may have seen him on ESPN, CBS or FOX and has worked with well over 700 athletes from MLB, NHL, NFL, and NCAA among others. He’s also a sought after speaker, runs the Renegade Radio Podcast, and is the author of the best-selling nutrition guide called the Renegade Diet. Jay shares the story of how he got started in the fitness business after spending much of his youth being bullied and lacking self-confidence. He went on to build a six figure training business before he was 20 and hustled his ass off 12+ hours a day the next decade, building an underground gym and ultimately his online coaching business. His journey wasn't without struggle though and he went broke on more than one occasion and went from living a lavish lifestyle, taking high roller trips to Las Vegas and eating at the best restaurants to living with him mother and not having a penny to his name. Today, after working relentlessly on himself for years, reading hundreds of books, attending seminars and workshops, and committing 100% to his health and fitness, Jay is the epitome of confidence and is an inspiration to so many men at 44 years old. I asked Jay about his habits and routines that keep him to fit and how he spends his days. He shared a few of his go-to exercises and recovery tools and why he loves the float tank so much. We got into talking about confidence and why it's the sexiest trait a man can possess and how to get more of it through a few simple actions. He said something that really stuck with me and that was confidence comes from high self-esteem which comes directly from making promises to yourself and keeping them. Love this. One of the things I like most about Jay and his approach to fitness (and life) is that he's a straight shooter and believes in and follows the basics of good health. No gimmicks or bullsh*t like so many others in the fitness industry.
The listener Q&A returns this week with some great info. I start out by giving a brief recap of WrestleMania week. Then I talk about my current diet, what my training has been like for the last two years and what it will look like going forward. In addition to that discussion and a few other tangents I answer your questions on topics including: Who is a full body workout best for? Who should be doing splits? What NOT to do if you want to make great progress. The benefits of stability training and how to implement it. What is the ideal rep range for every different muscle group? How much physical activity does it take to maximize fat loss? How much direct biceps and triceps work should you do? What should you do if you don't enjoy most forms of formal training? What exercise do I have a love/hate relationship with? My thoughts on Game of Thrones and other shows I watch. Should there be censorship in stand up comedy? How to eat for size and strength gains on college campus. Should a coach teach his athletes how to train on their own? Tips for effectively coaching group workouts. How to incorporate boxing into your workouts. And more... This episode is brought to you by biOptimizers. MassZymes is the most powerful protein-digesting enzyme on the market. Do you find yourself confused and overwhelmed when it comes to nutrition? How and what should you eat? What should you eliminate? One expert says to avoid carbs at all costs, and eat a high fat diet, and the next says the exact opposite. One says you need to eat 5-6 times a day for optimal results and the other says meal frequency and timing doesn’t matter. It becomes even more confusing when you look at the plethora of diets; carnivore, low carb, high carb, carb cycling, keto, paleo, low protein, high protein, vegetarian, vegan, IF, flex dieting, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s insanity!! You just want to know what works and what doesn’t. Dr. Chris Mohr has made a career out of teaching people simple, practical and effective ways to eat for a healthy lifestyle. His website, Mohr Results, provides info that helps people juggle the demands of a busy life while fulfilling their desire to live actively and fully. He is a nutrition spokesperson and consultant to a number of media outlets and corporations including Under Armour, Reebok, Clif Bar, Gatorade and Nestle. He has also served as the consulting Sports Nutritionist for the Cincinnati Bengals and University of Massachusetts Athletic Program. He has appeared on several popular TV shows as a nutritional guest expert and served as the nutritional consultant on LL Cool J’s NY Times Bestselling book, “LL Cool J’s Platinum Workout.” If you wanna take the guesswork and stress out of eating right, listen as we discuss: What exciting things does he have going on in 2019? [4:54] What’s his take on current nutrition trends like the carnivore diet, low carb and keto? [7:28] Should you base your diet on the way you train? [10:54] What is his stance on meal frequency and intermittent fasting? [11:18] How he eats for overall cognitive function. [15:15] Does meal timing help improve performance and strength? [19:09] Has he worked with anyone who has experienced improved cognitive function from a keto diet? [20:03] What total protein intake does he recommend for the average person? [20:56] The Top 10 Foods to promote excellent health. [23:04] His “go to” list of supplements. [26:08] What are his thoughts on post workout nutrition? [29:09] How sleep impacts all aspects of your life. [30:36] How to get a good night’s sleep. [33:04] Why you should focus on the pillars (nutrition, sleep and movement) before anything else. [41:14] What does a week of activity look like for him? [42:18] Why we MUST have parameters around screen time. [44:09] This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens.
