Ira Einhorn, the one-time hippie intellectual, is often credited as being one of the founders of Earth Day, but in this episode we discuss how that is false and that his true claim to fame is actually quite sinister. Einhorn, who once preached free love, murdered his ex-girlfriend Holly Maddux and then led investigators on an international manhunt. It's a story decades in the making, but luckily no one gave up on getting justice for Holly. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/patrick-conn/support

[originally published on Patreon January 5, 2024] Today I'm joined by Reid (@seriations) to continue our conversation about Ira 'the Unicorn' Einhorn. We get into Einhorn's relationship to Andrija Puharich, his involvement with Earth Day, Bell Telephone company, and the development of "Einhorn's Network". Reid explains the importance of the Diebold Corporation and how this all might be a sophisticated method of OSINT and espionage, among whatever else it may have been. Note: in the episode, Reid said that he hadn't nailed down the name of the guy who introduced Einhorn, and mistakenly said that Geller was introduced via an American army attaché. Reid later found that this was Paul Henshaw, the head biophysicist for the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1947, Henshaw was on the US scientific team that studied radiation after-effects in Hiroshima. This same Henshaw introduced Ira Einhorn to Andrija Puharich. Geller was introduced to Puharich by Itzhak Bentov, an Israeli scientist, army officer, and mystic. Ira Einhorn, "The Unicorn Killer", was self proclaimed environmental activist, and a convicted killer. But bringing him to justice was an ordeal. Did he manipulate the system, or just prolong the inevitable? Listen in as we discuss this and more. Hour 1 -  Good Monday morning! Here's what Nick Reed covers this hour: Earth Day was Saturday. Nick talks about the founder of Earth Day, Ira Einhorn. Einhorn was an extremist left-wing activist who cared so much about saving people's lives, murdered his then-girlfriend in cold blood. The U.S. is apparently at such a stage of degeneracy that anti-gun radicals are buying guns to shoot people and make the case for banning firearms. The man responsible for the deaths of five at Old National Bank in Lousiville, Kentucky, on April 10 reportedly admitted that the motivation for his killing spree was to further the left's gun-control agenda. An NBC News poll shows that Democrat President Joe Biden trails a generic Republican significantly, ahead of his expected campaign launch this week.

Dry those eyes! Your favorite midwestern gals are back from break and fully (ahem) rejuvenated.  Brandi starts us off with a story that *seems* straightforward. When LaNell Barsock was discovered dead in her home, investigators looked into the most likely suspect – her boyfriend, Louis Bonheur. He'd always been the jealous type. LaNell's friends said that he could be controlling. In fact, on the day of her murder, Louis got into a public altercation with LaNell. Investigators figured they had their guy. But Louis had a rock-solid alibi. Then Kristin tells us about one of the douchiest men we've ever covered. His name was Ira Einhorn, but he nicknamed himself “The Unicorn.” He claimed that he read a new book every day. He claimed that he invented Earth Day. He claimed to have insider knowledge on everything from extraterrestrials to global conspiracies. What he didn't like to claim was his history of violence toward women – specifically women who were in the process of dumping him. So when his ex-girlfriend Holly Maddux wound up dead, Ira blamed everyone but himself.  And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The Ira Einhorn Case,” by Steve Lopez for Time Magazine  “Ira Einhorn, counterculture guru and murderer, dies in prison at 79,” by Katharine Q. Seelye for The New York Times “No, Ira Einhorn is not the founder of Earth Day,” by Dan Mcquade for PhillyMag.com “A touch of Eden,” by Russ Baker for Esquire “Ex-Fugitive convicted in 25-year-old murder,” The Associated Press “Maddux boyfriend testifies he feared for her safety,” by Joann Loviglio for The Associated Press “For Ira Einhorn, a fate worse than death, by Dave Lindorff for Salon.com “Fugitive Einhorn is guilty of murder in 1977 bludgeoning of his girlfriend,” by Linda Loyd for the Philadelphia Inquirer “Former hippie guru Ira Einhorn convicted of killing girlfriend in ‘77,” by Joann Loviglio for The Associated Press “The Unicorn Killer,” episode of People Magazine Investigates In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “The Case of LaNell Barsock” episode Dateline: The Last Day “Woman leaves false clues in lover's murder, caught after escape to Belize” True Crime Daily “Investigators Focus In On Slain Nurse's Boyfriend, But Who Is The Real Killer?” By Jill Sederstrom, Oxygen “Jury deliberates in case of woman accused of shooting ex-lover, fleeing to Belize” by Jerome Campbell, Los Angeles Times “Palmdale woman guilty of killing lover, framing victim's boyfriend” The Antelope Valley Times “Palmdale woman's conviction upheld for fatally shooting ex-lover” by City News Service, The Antelope Valley Times YOU'RE STILL READING? On April 22, 1970 over 20 million people took to the streets over the lack of regulation of corporations’ pollution. Since then, Earth Day has been an annual chance to motivate citizens to do something good for the planet. Often people think that Ira Einhorn had something to do with the creation of Earth Day because of an iconic picture taken at a rally on that first day in April of 1970.In the 1960s and early 70s, Ira Einhorn was known as an academic expert on the counterculture movement. However, he was hiding a dark side--one that abused the women that he was supposed to love. One woman, Holly Maddux, would not be able to escape him or his apartment, and 18 months after her disappearance, a Philadelphia detective would find her mummified remains shoved in a steamer trunk.Join us this week as we go on a wild dumpster ride through from the 1970s to just this month as we talk about Ira Einhorn, the Unicorn Killer. During this quarantine, there has been a huge uptick in domestic violence and self-harm cases across the country. For anonymous, confidential help available 24/7, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY) now.You can also text 9-11 if it’s unsafe for you to talk. Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. Central for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Ira Einhorn.  On September 10, 1977, after a five year relationship marred by infidelity and emotional and physical abuse, Helen “Holly” Maddux ended the relationship and returned to the apartment she shared with Ira Einhorn to get her belongings after Einhorn threatened to destroy them.  The couple attended a showing of “Star Wars” with friends that evening.  That was the last time she was seen alive.  After Holly failed to return to New York or to contact friends or family for birthdays, Thanksgiving or Christmas, her family hired private detectives, who traveled to Philadelphia and conducted interviews with the owner, superintendent and residents of the Race Street building, as well as friends of Einhorn and Holly.  In spite of Einhorn’s refusal to cooperate, in March, 1979, the investigators presented their findings to the Philadelphia Police Department, which gave the department probable cause necessary to obtain a search warrant for the apartment.  On March 28, 1979, Holly’s body was found in a locked trunk, in a locked closet in Einhorn’s apartment.  The keys to the two locks were subsequently found hanging on a hook in the kitchen.  In January, 1981, Einhorn fled the United States to avoid trial on a first degree murder charge.  We’ll talk about the case against Einhorn, his flight to avoid prosecution, his 1997 arrest in France, the extradition process and his 2001 return to the U.S.  We’ll also discuss Einhorn’s 2002 trial, conviction, sentence and direct appeal.  Finally, we’ll talk about his unsuccessful post-conviction efforts and his death on April 3, 2020, in prison in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

Murder, My Dude returns with a lover's quarrel turned into an international manhunt. Ira Einhorn was a central part of Philadelphia counterculture from the Summer of Love all the way up until the mid-seventies, but when things turned South in a tumultuous five-year relationship, he was revealed to be a bad neighbor, an even worse boyfriend, and a surprisingly hard to nab fugitive. This week's show takes you from his beginnings as a Jewish kid in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia to the prolonged legal battle waged to ensure he faced justice. Elsewhere on the show, This Week In Murder explores the newest addition to Bob Dylan's legendary catalog and an unbelievable story of a mother and daughter both taken before their time. And, because they can't all be gems, we end the show with, quite possibly, the worst-ever Who Died The Worst? Like what we're doing? Subscribe and tell a friend!
