During the early '70s, Warren and his brother Bill formed The Ham Brothers Band and included Ira Wilkes on bass, Red Young on piano and organ and Dahrell Norris on drums. The group recorded for Texas producer Huey P. Meaux. Despite critical acclaim for the work, the album never made it in the marketplace. It was soon taken out of print. In 1978 The Ham Brothers band had replaced Wilkes and Young with Bob Parr and Ken Rarrick, both from the acclaimed jazz education program at the University of North Texas. Later that same year, David Gates, of Bread fame, hired the Ham Brothers to tour as part of Bread. The act was then billed as David Gates and Bread. A year later pop diva Cher secured the services of the same band. When Cher recorded the project album Black Rose, Warren joined the band for the recording and the subsequent supporting tour. In his early years, Ham was a vocalist and played the reeds for the Fort Worth, Texas based Bloodrock (1972–74). Ham appeared on the last two Bloodrock albums: Passage and Whirlwind Tongues. Warren Ham has also toured with Kansas in the John Elefante era (in 1982, played additional keyboards, flute, alto and soprano saxophones, harmonica and backing vocals), Toto (1986-1988, and since 2017), and Donna Summer (1983). He toured with Olivia Newton-John in 2006 as an instrumentalist and vocalist performing John Travolta's part with Newton-John on her No. 1 Grease hit, "You're The One That I Want", as well as backing vocals. When Kerry Livgren left Kansas to form his own Christian rock band AD, Ham went with him as the new band's lead singer. Ham appeared on the first, second and fourth of AD's four albums: 1) Timeline 2) Art of the State and 3) Prime Mover. Ham was a featured vocalist and instrumentalist for the Maranatha! Promise Band - the worship band for the Promise Keepers men's movement put together by Maranatha! Music from Promise Keepers' incarnation in 1993 to 1996. He appeared on their 1993 album, Face to Face with the song "This Is What I Believe", and on their 1996 album, Break Down the Walls, on the song "Send Me" along with Steven Jackson and Leonard Tucker. He was also a part of the live touring version of the Promise Band for the 1995 Promise Keepers conference season where he played harmonica, saxophone, trumpet, flute, and other wind instruments along with backup vocals. This was documented in the VHS video and CD "Live Worship With The Maranatha! Promise Band" where he most famously played an intro to "Man Of The Spirit, Man Of The Word". Since the demise of AD, he has released solo recordings in the contemporary Christian music genre "Come on Children" and is the author of Beginning Blues/Rock Harmonica (ISBN 0-8256-1154-7). From 1996 to 2000, Ham toured as part of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Warren Ham also appeared as an integral member of Donna Summer's live band on her 2008 tour (having first appeared as part of her 1983 touring group) supporting her 2008 release Crayons. Warren Ham toured with Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. In the mid-eighties and from 2017 on, he tours with Toto.

Music is in the Blood - Tony Morra

The Rich Redmond Show

Tony started his professional career in the music industry in 1980 at the age of 16 years old. Playing drums since the age of 3 Tony had been pounding on his dad's 1948 Radio King drum set that was a fixture in the basement of his Queens, NY home! Not only was Tony's dad a professional musician but his grandfather and his great grandfather back in Italy were as well.  It seems that music was Tony's destiny. With so many musicians in the family, Tony's listening palette was broad and wide! Opera and Big band jazz were the main stays on the turntables back then. As was the Beatles, Bee Gee's, James Taylor and all the pop artists of the day. One influential film Tony remembers was “The Glenn Miller Story”. In the story “Glenn” is searching for that “sound”. Tony's Mom would often refer to this, as Tony would come up from the basement looking for that “sound” on his drums - bewildered as to how the drums sounded so big and fat on the records. The quest was on for the “Holiest of Grails” a great drum sound!  As time passed, Tony went on to work in the Studio and Live concerts with the likes of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Carrie Underwood, Ramone, Diane Warren, Keith Thomas, Kip Winger, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Broening, Amy Grant, Donna Summer, Roberta Flack, Paul Taylor, Discrete Drums Loop Series, Toby Mac, Cindy Bradley, Jay Soto, Stephanie Smith, Ayeisha Woods, Rebecca Saint James, Britt Nicole, Stevie B, Sweet Sensation, Kathy Troccoli, Regie Hamm, Crystal Lewis, Avalon, John Elefante, Van Zandt and on.  His career has taken him from NYC to LA to his current residence in Franklin, TN. (A quaint city 14 miles outside of Music Row in downtown Nashville.) Tony is a successful session drummer and producer in Nashville. After years of touring, he had the good fortune to get into the session scene in town. The scene was healthy but still changing. Session work was going through some severe changes due to budgets and technical changes.  After an encounter with LA session musician J.R Robinson, Tony was convinced that the future of tracking was going to be done in the home. Now for a gtr track or vocal overdub maybe so, but drums? Here we go again searching for that “sound” in a 25 x 25 Garage built for storing cars and gardening equipment not killer drum sounds. With much investigation and a great builder with vision, they turned the Garage and Utility room into what now is one of the busiest drum tracking rooms in town.  For 8 years now Tony Morra has been tracking drums for demos, custom records, indie projects. Sounds about right, but NO! There's more!( Billy Mayes moment) Tony is tracking drums for Masters, Television, Film, Loop Libraries you hear on TV and on radio everyday. Tony is one of the leaders in home recording through the Internet since it was possible to do so! He has been a beta tester for many online programs that make it easier to do sessions in real time. What was thought to be a little drum room for some extra work has turned into a livelihood. Tony's clients span the world! These sessions are done at his home with the sounds rivaling those done in the largest and most expensive studios.  A big part of Tony's career was happening when he thought he had no career! In between gigs and tours in NY when work was lean, Tony would find work as an assistant engineer at jingle studios for jingle writer friends of his. He would also get to play live drums for them from time to time, but this was when the industry was moving to drum machines and loops. These experiences, which he took for granted in that he was just “collecting a check when gigs were slow”, gave him a wealth of knowledge of the recording industry and working with midi and sequencers. Mind you this is before Pro Tools! All editing was done with a razor and a prayer. Oh and he knows how to align a tape machine!  That knowledge has paid huge dividends in that beyond being an accomplished musician, he is an accomplished tracking engineer. Still Tony will bring in Top Nashville engineers to help dial in new sounds and experiment with gear.  His room is outfitted with the best gear there is, Daking, API, GML, Avalon, Neve EQ's, DBX 160's, Distressors, Telefunken Pre's, vintage Orbans and so on! The mics are no joke; Neumann U47, AKG's, Audio Technica, KM 184's, modified Ribbons.........and a ProTools HDX system.  It's a new world and a new frontier in recording. Tony's embracing it! Using what's available to make the finest quality Drum Tracks available for those who might never have been able to afford to do so and for those where budget is not even a concern.  Some Things That Came Up:  -3:00 Italian Family Legacy  -7:00 Music was in the family blood.  -10:30 Sitting in with Margaret Manning.  -11:45 Compliments to Tony's drumming Dad  -13:45 George Lawerence now has Tony's Dad's Big Band Charts  -14:50 Playing drums while Mom did housework -18:30 Worked at The Modern Drum Shop in NYC and studying with Joe Cusatis -19:50 The Ted Reed Book and The Bellson Book  -20:00 Cusatis Method: Play any rhythm with the right hand and fill in the triplets with the left.  -24:05 The lost art of teaching swing  -27:00 Trying to impress music teacher at private school  -29:45 Auditioning for Queens College  -30:10 Danny Gottlieb, Rod Morgenstein in the neighborhood  -31:55 Tympani Tuning Incident  -35:00 Driving vans for a zipper company  -36:00 Drinking Grappa with Marco Soccoli -38:00 Hanging with world class drummers at Manny's Music  -38:30 Drum Programming inspired by Sammy Merendino  -39:00 Wedding bands in NYC were a right of passage  -40:33 Intern for “The Jingle Queen of NY” at age 23, learning engineering, MIDI  -43:00 Incorporating clicks and loops. You've all heard of Kansas.  It's the state under Nebraska.  It's also arguably less famous than the band named after it.  Perhaps this is because the state of Kansas was never headed by John Elefante, whereas the band was.  That was nearly four decades ago, but it wasn't the end.  In fact, he just put out an album six days ago.  That's about as recent as it gets.  Even more recent was the crew learning that Tom wasn't going to be here.  In fact, it happened immediately before we started recording.  As a complete coincidence, Tim happens to be a huge fan and ends up saving the day. On today's episode of Backstage Pass with Gentry Thomas we are visited by a four time Grammy award winning musician John Elefante. The former lead man of Kansas, a band made famous by songs such as ‘Carry on Wayward Son 'and ‘Dust in the Wind ', has just released his own solo album. Promptly named ‘The Amazing Grace' the album is dedicated to understanding God's faith and is available on Spotify, YouTube, and his website JohnElefante.com. John and Gentry discuss the recent resurgence of vinyl records and which records were their favorites as young kids. John even tells a story how as a young man he sold 50 of his records for just 25 cents. He then describes how he used his award winning voice to become the front man of Kansas despite him stating how his knees were shaking during the audition. John Elefante gives his takes on Steve Walsh, Kerry Livgren, social media, faith, Tennessee Titans, and so much more on today's podcast. Make sure to subscribe and follow for the latest episodes.

His career began in earnest when a young John Elefante auditioned as the new lead singer and keyboardist for Kansas, in 1981. That year, the band was one of the top-grossing concert acts in the world and Elefante had never been in a band apart from his family. Although several of the top vocalists of the day applied for the job (e.g. Sammy Hagar, Doug Pinnick, Jim Stafford), Elefante received the part.Elefante sang the lead vocals and performed keyboards on two Kansas albums. He was also a major songwriting contributor (along with lead guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Kerry Livgren). On 1982's Vinyl Confessions, he co-wrote and sang the No. 4 Billboard Mainstream Rock hit, "Play the Game Tonight". He also wrote the acoustic-based classic "Chasing Shadows", along with the Top 40 single, "Right Away". The next year, on the following album, Drastic Measures, he wrote the early MTV favorite, "Fight Fire with Fire", which remains the band's highest charting single at No. 3 (Mainstream Rock) as well as a staple of Kansas' live shows to this day. Elefante was also responsible for "Everybody's My Friend," which was released as the second single from the album and reached No. 34 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.Around this time the band began to buckle under the increasing strain of maintaining the consistent radio hits and record company commercial expectations. In addition, contemporary pop music was quickly becoming antithetical to the band's organic, sophisticated aesthetic. A new age of sequenced synthesizers and drum machines confronted Kansas with the near-impossible challenge of maintaining their musical essence and commercial integrity. In 1984, on the retrospective collection The Best of Kansas, Elefante wrote the album's one new track, "Perfect Lover". That same year Elefante, Kerry Livgren, and Dave Hope left Kansas. In 1985, "Young and Innocent" appeared on the soundtrack to St. Elmo's Fire and was credited to "Elefante" as a collaborative effort by brothers John and Dino Elefante.1985–1989Elefante discovered another calling while still with Kansas—record producer. In 1984, he produced Perfect Timing for ground-breaking Southern California group, Sweet Comfort Band. While not a major commercial success, Petra's Back to the Street was a Grammy-nominated, breakthrough, commercial success for both Elefante and the band. He also contributed songwriting, keyboards, background vocals and engineering to the effort. With both John and Dino Elefante as the band's primary producers, Petra's already popular Christian pop/rock niche was given a timely boost. Their accolades include multiple gold albums, 10 consecutive CCM Magazine Reader's Choice Awards, induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Hard Rock Cafe, and the only artist to ever have four albums in the SoundScan top-100 Christian chart. In 1987 while producing a various artists album called California Metal, the album's production team of John and Dino Elefante ended up one track short and they decided to add a song written for Kansas called "Wasn't It Love" (originally entitled "What About Love") under the name Mastedon. Regency later requested a full-length album which became Mastedon's debut, It's a Jungle Out There.Closing out the decade, Elefante had produced five major label albums, and performed on 12. Over the next five years, Elefante worked at an almost frenetic pace as one of the most in-demand producers in Nashville. In addition to Petra's further releases, he worked as the producer on 30 other albums. He usually performed on the releases as well, often sharing songwriting credits, as well. Elefante was committed to his role as producer, eschewing other opportunities such as an offer to replace Bobby Kimball as lead singer for Grammy winners, Toto.
