As the Cardinals head west for the second time in the first month of the regular season, they do so lugging the baggage from one of the least productive lineups in the majors. The Cardinals' rank in the bottom five for many significant offensive categories. Four of the team's home runs have come from the catcher position, none from third baseman Nolan Arenado. He and Paul Goldschmidt, only one full season removed from finishing No. 1 and No. 3 in the MVP voting, have struggled to start the season. So, can it be easily dismissed as small sample sizes? Or, is it right to consider how last season ended and the struggles of spring to search for early warning signs for the Cardinals and their offensive production? KMOX/1120 AM's Kevin Wheeler joins the Best Podcast in Baseball to discussion with Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold the difference between small sample sizes, track records, and warning signs. Consider the JoJo Romero question about the offense. The Cardinals' lefty reliever, off to an impressive start to the season along with the rest of the bullpen, had a strong finish to last season and a strong spring, and that amplifies the April success he's had in limited innings. If that's true for Romero, then isn't the opposite also true? Hitters who struggled toward the end of last season, struggled through spring, and are struggling now cannot be so easily dismissed as small sample sizes. Or can they? The Philadelphia Phillies win their 3rd straight game as they take down the Brewers 5-4. Rhys Hoskins knocked in Andrew McCutchen in the first inning and after a couple walks, Didi Gregorius smoked a grand slam off Peralta! From there, the Phils offense went insanely quiet, but it was enough to shockingly hold on. On tonight's episode, we start by watching the end of game 3 against the Braves which ends wildly controversial. The Phillies finally have one go their way and get lucky on a call at the plate. One of our favorite players, JoJo Romero, gets called back up to the big leagues as Archie Bradley is unfortunately put on the 10-Day IL. We hope he can earn his keep in the big leagues. We get into the 3 game series in Atlanta which didn't completely go the Phillies' way, but they get the win Sunday night to avoid the sweep. The Phillies have a 4 game series against the Mets at Citi Field starting Monday night that will end with a great matchup of Eflin v. deGrom. We finish up with our Phillie of the series and talk a little about the recent suspensions the league has issued along with the Mets recent walkoff victory thanks to a BS hit by pitch in the strikezone. Today, we have the 26 man roster that is set for the season. We expand on the Phillies making this roster and the starters. Although our picks for CF are not who we thought they were. We talk about Scott Kingery, Odubel Herrera, and JoJo Romero unfortunately getting sent down to Triple A and the Auxiliary Camp (Which we are most upset with the JoJo decision). We discuss our Opening Day Lineups and between Cutch leading off, the 8th and pitcher spot, we are all over the place when comparing each other's lineups.
