While Pride month has come to an end, its origins and the celebration of diverse bodies, despite their sexual identity, race, ethnicity, and gender, have remained the same. After all, the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in New York's Greenwich Village was one of the most diverse establishments in the area. Such diversity has carried across to modern-day New York and is reflected fully in the cast of nine queer New Yorkers, filmed by two French filmmakers Julie Réali and Lesly Lynch for ODDA Magazine. The focus of the beautiful film revolves around love, self-acceptance, and freedom — themes that are as universal as they are unique to each and every one of us.
Medvirkende: Sisse Rej Rasmussen, tjener Julie R. What do an undergraduate degree in history, the transcription factor Forkhead box class O1 (FoxO1), and maternity leave have in common? In this new episode of our Behind the Bench podcast, host Lisandra de Castro Bras (East Carolina University) and her new co-host Charlotte Usselman (McGill University) interview lead author Kate Weeks (Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute) about a new study by Weeks and co-authors which shows FoxO1 is a critical mediator of exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy. We reached out to Kate to get the story behind her research, because we know how critically important it is for women scientists to hear from other women scientists about balancing scientific research and life outside the lab. Kate discusses the implications of her study in considering FoxO1 as a target for treating heart disease, and she also discusses the implications of maternity leave on maintaining her career as a research scientist. Interspersed in this engaging and enlightening conversation about Kate’s research are life lessons about planning your career path, taking family leave from work, inquiring about childcare at conferences, and so much more. Trvá to obvykle minimálně jednou týdně, půl roku.

There is a saying that you can divorce your spouse, but you cannot divorce your kids. In short, you will need to interact with your ex-spouse well past the signing of the divorce decree. People use social media for several reasons. For Instagram, most use it to keep in touch with friends and families while others use it to highlight their culture or connect with their fans. They’re also turning to Instagram to get information, get inspired, and build communities. It’s become a place for people to voice their opinions and share info, especially when it comes to infertility. Some will use Instagram to document their IVF journey (#IVF has over 1M posts) or talk about their loss (#miscarriage has over 360K posts). Regardless of where someone is in their journey, they can share their experiences (the highs and lows) with a community they build from the ground up. But with all of this knowledge and community building, people are also being served ads. These ads might gloss over heavy topics like infertility. Some have been reported talking about financing procedures like it’s a walk in the park. When this information isn’t coming from a reproductive endocrinologist, how do you know the information is accurate? In today’s episode, we hear from Dr. Natalie Crawford about why it’s important for fertility doctors to use popular social media platforms to educate patients and the general public about fertility, and we’ll also hear from Julie R., one of Dr. Crawford’s patients and a Progyny member, about how the patient and doctor relationship is enhanced through social media. Today's host is Taylor Burbach, Manager of Member Services at Progyny. Guests include: Dr. Natalie Crawford, fertility specialist at Aspire Fertility in Austin, and Julie R., a Progyny member. Is it possible for preclinical researchers to improve the quality of their cardiac and metabolic animal studies by incorporating protocols and strategies aimed at reducing bias? Listen as Deputy Editor Merry L. Lindsey (University of Nebraska Medical Center) interviews lead author Julie R. McMullen (Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute) and content expert Lisandra de Castro Brás (East Carolina University) about the study by Weeks et al., the latest article in the AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology Cores of Reproducibility in Physiology series. McMullen and co-authors conducted a short survey of preclinical research colleagues about how animal studies were being performed, with a focus on blinding, randomization and allocation concealment. The survey was followed by skills training aimed at improving practices, such as computer-generated methods for randomization and de-identifying drugs and interventions. Why take on this project? By providing basic scientists with tools to correctly randomize animals, and rationale to pre-specify inclusion and exclusion criteria, pre-specify endpoints, and appropriately address negative data, McMullen and collaborators hope to equip investigators with tools and knowledge to remove unconscious bias. This includes the encouragement of team science among smaller labs to allow for improvements in experimental design such as allocation concealment, which requires more personnel. Listen now to learn more.

GENDER, PSYCHOLOGY, AND JUSTICE: WOMEN’S EXPERIENCES WITH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM Women who have contact with the criminal justice system often have experiences quite different from their male counterparts. But how different? And why? Is it different in criminal courts and family courts? And what about race, class and sexual orientation – do they contribute to how a person is treated or the outcomes of courts? And what does it all mean? Finally, some researchers have looked into how gender intersects with all these factors to impact how women and girls are treated in and by the justice system. Authors Corinne C. Datchi and Julie R. Ancis collaborated in looking at not only data but personal stories to write their book, Gender, Psychology, and Justice. Ancis is Associate Vice President for Institute Diversity at the Georgia Institute of Technology. And has researched the area of multicultural competence and mental health. She is Past Chair of the Society of Counseling Psychology’s Section for the Advancement of Women. Datchi, Assistant Professor in the Professional Psychology and Family Therapy Department at Seton Hall University, is a private practice psychologist. She researches criminal justice populations. Join us as we discuss how courts make outdated assumptions that hurt women and girls from first contact to sentencing to family court decisions. Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) Research Focus Concept Pediatrics (LMU)
University medicine is surrounded by a variety of different social connections which extend well beyond the internal perspective of clinics, research and teaching. Through its day-to-day work, university medicine is part of a tightly knit system of references between many different disciplines. Nevertheless, there are few analyses in the literature which undertake an attempt to place child medicine within its fields of reference to architecture, economics, history or philosophy. The current reformation of pediatrics at the LMU invites a closer examination of the fundamentals of child medicine and a concerted attempt to make these fruitful for the future of the discipline. | Center for Advanced Studies: 10.01.2013 | Speaker: Prof. Julie R.
