This week we're replaying a classic episode where Steve and Yvonne interview John Duff and Alex Hilliard of Hilliard Martinez Gonzalez LLP (https://www.hmglawfirm.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review View/Download Trial Documents Case Details: Texas trial attorneys John Duff and Alex Hilliard of Hilliard Martinez Gonzales LLP share how they secured justice for the family of 60-year-old truck driver Juan Perez, who died after falling through Rodriguez Trucking's rotted roof onto a cement floor 12 feet below. Juan was a dedicated employee of Rodriguez Trucking for 17 years, contrary to the defense's claims that he was not employed by the company at the time of the incident, and was asked to help repair the roof without a safety harness or training of any kind, both of which resulted in a serious Office of Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) violation. A San Patricio County, Texas jury found Rodriguez Trucking owner Isaac G. Rodriguez, Sr. negligent and returned a verdict of $18 million, including $10 million in punitive damages. Guest Bios: Alex Hilliard Alex Hilliard is a dedicated advocate for those who have been injured or have lost a loved one due to another party's negligence. Alex is committed to championing his clients' interests, understanding the challenges they face, and helping them secure compensation for their losses. Alex's top priority is achieving the most just case resolution for his clients, be it trial or settlement, which is seen in his tireless investigation and persistence. He has distinguished himself with the loyalty and support he shows to his clients in his determination to ensure that their voices are heard. His kindhearted nature makes him perfect for his position in personal injury and wrongful death cases – he handles clients with the sensitivity that is required yet is committed to researching and crafting a strategy that strengthens each case. He brings passion on behalf of those he serves and shares empathy with those victims of tragedy at all times. Having clerked at HMG for three years while attending St. Mary's Law School, Alex worked on many aspects of personal injury and wrongful death litigation, including the high-profile ignition-switch litigation against General Motors. HMG represented injury victims and families of those killed in accidents caused by GM's defective ignition switch and their concealment of safety defects. This multi-district litigation is considered the single largest product liability litigation in US history, resulting in a $575 million settlement. In September 2018, Alex was appointed to the Plaintiffs' Litigation Committee for the MSU/Nassar Class-Action in the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan. Currently, Alex is part of a class action litigation team that represents diesel truck owners fighting against U.S. auto manufacturers — Ford, General Motors, FCA (Chrysler) — for allegedly selling millions of diesel trucks equipped with defective CP4 fuel injection pumps that disintegrate and destroy the truck's engine, leaving consumers with repair bills that range from $8,000.00 to $20,000.00 per vehicle. Alex is a sought-after speaker, and he regularly presents on cutting-edge legal topics. This year, Alex will address audiences across the country about how law firms can improve results by conducting in-house mock trials. In the past year, Alex has lectured at the Advanced Personal Injury Law Conference in Dallas on the latest tactics in the financial aspect of budgeting a personal injury lawsuit and was a featured speaker at the Texas ALP 2018 Fall Education Conference. Alex regularly speaks at continuing education events for the Texas Bar College and the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Civil Trial, Civil Appellate, and Personal Injury Trial Law, and was honored to speak at the 2018 LitiQuest Litiquest 2018 conference at Google Headquarters in New York. Alex often gives back to his community by working with local middle school, high school, and college mock trial teams. "When you want something, the universe conspires to helping you achieve it." "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." These are some of Nadine Chapman's favorite quotes and they have changed her life. Oh, and we talk about how your "dinosaur tail" gets in your way. It is the start of a great conversation! Nadine started her career in the Federal Government as an attorney and rose up the ranks quickly. When she was 30 years old and had her “good government job” (per her mother), she decided to give it up and restart her career at the World Bank. She dreamed of working at the World Bank since she was a little girl. This took courage to make a significant change when most people would have said “stay in your safe job” but yet she moved out of her comfort zone. And, her goal-orientation got her ready…she had a vision and a goal for the future. She was resilient as she got knocked down at her new job because it was vastly different from her role in the government. All the while she listened to the voice inside her that told her to move, do more and fly. Her story is incredibly personal and infused with amazing advice! Nadine is currently the Manager of Mediation Services for the World Bank Group (WBG), an International Finance Institution that employs over 30,000 staff world-wide. In that capacity, she manages a decentralized team that provides employment mediation, facilitation, organizational consulting and training. She joined the WBG in 2000 as a Mediation Officer. Nadine has held several senior positions within the WBG, and has extensive experience handling complex employment case matters and is a trained mediator, facilitator, arbitrator and trainer. Prior to joining the WBG she served as an Attorney Adviser and Dispute Resolution Specialist for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She has also served as an adjunct professor at the Howard University School of Law and Catholic University of America. Nadine has an interest in empowering individuals, in particular women. To that end, she has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences and events. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Howard University and a Juris Doctorate Degree from the Catholic University of America School of Law.Connect with Nadine to learn more about her and her background:LinkedIn = https://www.linkedin.com/in/nadine-chapman-79201910/Sign up for our newsletter at https://abbraccigroup.com/. April 7, 2021 | Episode 33 Special Education Attorney & Special Needs Advocate Georgianna Junco-Kelman join Shawn & Brian in discussing special education needs. Georgianna Junco-Kelman is the founder and managing attorney of The Law Offices of Georgianna Junco-Kelman located in Studio City, California. Ms. Kelman's law practice is exclusively dedicated to the representation of students with disabilities from ages 3 to 22 years old. A fluent Spanish speaker, Ms. Kelman was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba and immigrated to the United States at the age of 10 years old. She received her bachelor's degree in Political Science with an emphasis in Public Law, from the University of California at Los Angeles, graduating with Departmental Honors. She earned her Juris Doctorate Degree at the Whittier College of Law in Los Angeles, California and was admitted to the California State Bar in 1998. She has served a combined 16 years in the Autism Speaks Southern California and Inclusion Matters by Shane's Inspiration Boards of Directors. Ms. Kelman initially practiced in the area of criminal defense for 7 years, amassing an impressive number of “Set Aside” (case dismissal) findings in Driving Under the Influence Administrative Per Se hearings, of which she conducted over 3000. With no intention of leaving the criminal field, Ms. Kelman turned her aspirations to criminal prosecution but her career inadvertently and unexpectedly took a different direction. Ms. Kelman's personal journey in the world of disabilities began in 2002, with the birth of her first child born with a congenital brain disorder detrimentally impacting his global development. Her personal experience with her son paved the way for her next professional endeavor, an exclusively special education law practice. The daunting experience in the attempt to secure her child's special education services was an eye opener to the significant lack of educational supports and the shortage of adequate services to parents of children with disabilities. It was this rude awakening that ultimately led Ms. Kelman to the field of special education law. Inspired by her own challenging journey with her little boy, and after meeting countless families desperately seeking assistance to navigate the tumultuous waters of the special education system, Ms. Kelman immersed herself in her next and most important life venture – shifting her career to the practice of special education law – creating the Law Offices of Georgianna Junco-Kelman in 2008, establishing herself as a respected leading expert in the area with a fiery and relentless approach. “If it would not pass muster for my own child, it is not sufficiently appropriate for my clients' children.” -Georgianna Junco-Kelman Website: http://www.specialkidsattorney.com/home/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/specialkidsatty/ Organization: https://inclusionmatters.org/ — Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/just_two_dads/ Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/just-two-dads/id1535250142 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/justtwodads Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wearejusttwodads #justTwoDads #SpecialNeedsParenting #SpecialKidsAttorney

Pamela was the Managing Attorney for the LA office, then 15 years ago started her own law practice and continued representing parents of children with exceptional needs in an effort to provide high quality legal representation to underserved communities. Before leaping into special education law, Pamela was a Litigation Associate with two distinguished law firms: Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler LLP in New York City, and Arnold & Porter, Kaye, Scholer in Los Angeles. Then she took a much needed break. Pamela shares her journey to an extremely fulfilling career, beginning in childhood and the motivations that guided her choices. My guest today, Hakeem Muhammad, grew up in the communities excluded by mainstream America. He argues that in our anger we should not undervalue the structural conditions that enable and safeguard those that treat their fellow man as sub-human. The structural racism that plagues American life comes from a broader ideology that shows disdain for non-European cultures and creeds. He argues powerfully that white supremacy cannot be separated from liberalism, in fact, liberal protagonists, from Locke to Jefferson, Kant to Rawls have all echoed the same mantra of America acting as a civilizing force in the world. The atrocities of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo were conducted by the same people, nurtured within the same cultural climate. Hakeem Muhammad is a Public Interest Law Scholar from Northeastern University School of Law where he also holds a Juris Doctorate Degree.
