The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity for Canadians to listen to the wisdom coming from Indigenous communities: to learn and unlearn our shared story. Music is a powerful way to share it. Music That Carries Truth was recorded live at CBC Manitoba Studio 11 and features music and conversation with Nadia and Jason Burnstick (Burnstick) and Sebastian Gaskin. It's folk music that brims with the kind of chemistry that could only come from a husband and wife. Nadia, a Francophone-Métis singer-songwriter, and Jason, a Plains-Cree guitarist, are award-winning duo: Burnstick. Two performers whose voices and musicality blend together with ease. They share songs from their album KÎYÂNAW, Cree for Us and the inspiration behind their music. Plus, they debut a new single: Made of Sin is a powerful response to the 215 graves of children found at Kamloops Indian Residential School at Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc in BC. Sebastian Gaskin is a multi-instrumentalist R&B Singer-Songwriter from Tataskweyak Cree Nation (Split Lake). Sebastian writes and self produces music that is anything but formulaic, thanks to eclectic musical tastes in R&B, Hip Hop, Metal, and Punk. Their first EP - Contradictions was released in 2019 and they were recently signed to Indigenous owned record label Ishkōdé Records. The last generation to attend Residential school in their family, Sebastian shares songs and tells us how music saved their life.

She brings much to the table with her experience and has much to share about music making in the Midwestern United States. If Joe-Bob Briggs were here, he'd say "Check 'er Out!!"

A Philly native, a preacher's grandchild, son of a cop, a black and gay young man, with virtuoso vocals and dance moves to die for. Julian has a true gift. You must listen to his story on this weeks episode of Ritch In Life. Julian is an alum of the acclaimed Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts and went on to attend Philadelphia University of the Arts. Growing up singing in his families choir at church, Julian found peace with himself while performing . His experience of not “coming out” but as he says “letting in” as a young black male is inspiring. His songwriting is touching and his voice is ethereal. “As I matured, and my understanding of love and relationships developed along with my voice, I realized I could truly express the depth of love in my heart through song. I treat relationships with the greatest respect. I love people and all creatures. I'm all about tolerance and respect. I'm all about inclusivity. I love having seats at tables, but I would love for everyone to have a seat at the table.” Julian King's loving nature translates directly to his soaring, soulful music and exceptional performance. His new hit single, Can We Go Back, is his story of love and heartbreak. And you MUST download the video! His knack for translating this story both through song and vision is a thing of beauty. Julian's conversation with Ritch is about his life growing up in a church community, “letting in” his family and friends and most importantly his music. His chilling voice is one you won't forget! Born to Sing ……Ezell Dillard's inspiration to sing started at the very young age of three. It was at this time that his grandmother, Oral Bill Hill took notice of his strong interest in gospel music. The Making of a Musician ……The start of Ezell's career took place in 1992 when he became a background vocalist for singer Bobby Johnson and The Supreme Angels. As time passed he had dreams of one day leading this dynamic group; however, this changed with the split of the group several years later. He didn't let that stop him and soon after joined a group known as Joe Lewis and The Southern Wonder. He performed alongside this group from 1993 to 1999. With the continued success, he aimed to elevate his career and take it nationally. Change of Direction ……As his career begins to take off, he unexpectedly made a significant decision to transition into the genre of R&B. He connected with a group known as VIP Houston's own Destiny's Child. This song was written from the viewpoint of a male, who became local fame when they remixed a popular song titled “Bills, Bills, Bills” by making it well-liked among many listeners. This song became a breakthrough for the group and was featured on the album of artist Money Black in 2000. A ComeBack…… Since his return, he has gained a new perspective on the influences that continue to inspire him to pursue his dream and share his love of music with the world. Today he has for your new music, new sound, and a lot of souls to give. I introduce to you Ezell Dillard also known as Mr. Du Right Man!

In 2018, he performed at the legendary Apollo Theatre for a taping of Apollo Love also known as Showtime at the Apollo. Tee has elevated his musical profile since his humble beginnings as a church musician. In June 2019, Tee was featured in a worldwide Walmart commercial after winning an international talent competition. For winning the competition, Tee was flown to Arkansas to perform for 20,000 screaming fans and dazzled the audience with his vocals and electric drum solo. Tee and his band travel all over the southeast region performing and entertaining crowds of all sizes. Since winning the competition, Tee has been busier than ever performing for large audiences and meeting the demand of his energetic stage show. His latest single, Stuck on You, is a hit and has been played all over the world. It is in heavy rotation in Italy and London and has been able to independently get airplay from all over the US. We've had a chance to travel all over the world, virtually to talk to creative experts and practitioners in all areas of the arts to find out what inspires them to find out how they organize their ideas. In today's episode, we're in the world's live music capital, Austin, Texas. and my guest today is https://www.instagram.com/m00dybanks/ (Moody Bank$). Moody is an up-and-coming R&B singer-songwriter and her music has been described as “Smoky alto sounds over infectious pop hooks.” During her creative and songwriting process, whenever she hears a beat, Moody asks herself, "What color does this beat make me feel?" By answering this question, she's able to get a sense of how a song can bring about the feeling of color or energy. Specific colors help inspire her. Moody understands that the more a song can bring you to a specific moment or memory or feeling, the more likely people are going to resonate with that song. Some of her main musical influences include Erykah Badu & Jill Scott because of their writing and use of real instruments. What guides Moody & her team during the creative process? Not being attached to your art, to the point where it starts interrupting the flow of it. Not taking the art too seriously and just working from an organic space. When collaborating with her band and her music producer, she gives them creative freedom to create openly without attachments and lets them know their voice matters. As for conquering the music industry, two pointers from Moody to be able to shine in this industry include: Being self-sufficient: Taking care of yourself, knowing how to be all-rounded. Going with the flow: Don't limit yourself to a singular idea Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSz920xnPHE (Moody Bank$ & her band Fallen Dollars live recording) Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3Bkgi0sMvqUR03r6ZGHmGM?si=n10fydEVRiWKwkrlXScNlg (Moody Bank$) Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/moody-bank%24/1507874864 (Moody Bank$) Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/m00dybanks/?hl=en (@M00dybanks) There are definitely challenges throughout this journey but you have to persevere, stay consistent & take control of your life's trajectory. As she works on her tape “Feeling Colors” Moody's key takeaway is “If the product is good enough, people are going to see it.”

Afro-LatinX - Alt-FolK, Blues and R&B Artist, Songstress, Wordsmith, Producer, Activist, and Humanitarian Yurby calls in to The Junk and Jam Hour via Zoom to talk all about her love and joy for producing and crafting music, which began at the tender age of 10 – after her father persuaded and convinced her to turn one of her poems into a song. From the South Bronx, Yurby has created her own style of music – which effortlessly fuses blues, Alternative Rock, and R&B, producing a sound so melodically and lyrically eclectic, she has since been dubbed the Dominican Alanis Morrisette. We also talk about her marvelous charitable work for children - including with Usher's New Look - and her very own foundation entitled Bronx Noise, where she has helped to preserve a safe space for women and the LGBTQ community to discover and develop their own musical gifts, as well as her fundraising event for Parkinsons Awareness. Matthew A. Wright aka Sitch is a singer, dancer, and all-around artist from Fayetteville, North Carolina. He started singing at 8 years old and writing music at age 10, competing in an international Actors, Models, and Talent Competition for songwriting in 2008. Matthew began producing and releasing his own music in 2015, including two EPs, "Color Me Skeptic" and "Expanse". As he built a repertoire and decided to pursue performing as a career, he branched out to area open mics, performances at and around his alma mater NC State, and showcases in the Raleigh area; adopting the stage name Sitch in 2019. Since then, Sitch released more music and even shot a music video for his single "Runway". He has continued to perform around North Carolina and recently made an impression in Atlanta, GA for the first time, and he is currently working on a new EP to be released in the spring. Creatively, Sitch finds inspiration from artists like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Miguel, Bruno Mars, and H.E.R. Aside from being a fan, each artist is a wealth of knowledge and story, and Sitch studies their artistry. Sitch values the influence he draws from female artists especially because while men can obviously deliver power and presence, the energy women contribute to the creative spectrum is so diverse and honest, strong and intentionally intersectional -- it so often lives in an emotional landscape men have been socialized to believe they shouldn't access, and it's just as moving. As an artist, Sitch wants to make music that says something of substance. He loves when lyrics and melodies can speak to people, so he strives to create music that does the same. As a black male artist, he purposely writes lyrics that uplift women, address vulnerability and insecurity, and reintroduce connection. If you're a fan, Welcome to the Newsroom. They always know What's the Sitch.

Rozetta Marie is a singer, songwriter, and all around talent (including published model, accredited actress, and former modern dancer for NDI). Following up from her most recent single release, "Bounce," Rozetta Marie is now focusing on her album "Geminii Life," scheduled for release on her birthday, May 25th. Much like her multiple Gemini personalities, her sound speaks to a wide variety of listeners and genres of music, such as Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, and even a little soulful Rock. But, if you had to pick a genre, find her under R&B/Pop. Her voice can go from a sultry Anita Baker, to a raspy sexy Jasmine Sullivan, to a hardcore seductive Rihanna, and when you thought you heard it all, she hits you with a Remy Ma like flow in some fire rap lyrics. Her lyrics are clever and expressive, her look is enticing, and her voice is hypnotic. What more could you ask for? Highlights of her career include, opening up for Vado (Dip Set), Vicki Winans, Allure, music spinning on a syndicated radio platform WPIR 98.4 FM, artist review by Music Connection magazine and Elegant Hoodness Magazine (RIP AD The General, CEO of Elegant Hoodness), radio hosting with Dr. Dre (Yo MTV Raps), hosting her own NYC local cable show "SexCells" under SNYC TV Production and Geminii Life Entertainment, and she won't stop til she reaches the top! Striving to be the next big thing internationally Rozetta Marie says "Neglect not the gift that is in thee..." words that she lives by. In the words of Music Connection Magazine, “…she’s a born performer. www.rozettamarie.net
