“I think education is very much of an artistic process. I love to think of this as kind of being in a museum. It's about curation of an experience,” says Alex Kendall who oversees the physician assistant training program at Emory University. As he takes on the role of director, Kendall's background in art and anthropology give him an interesting perspective from which to build on and realize the program's vision and mission, which are rooted in evidence-based education, leadership development, interprofessional education and creating patient-centered, community-oriented clinicians. Toward that end, one curated experience is participation in the longstanding Emory Farm Worker project in which students care for thousands of migrant workers from Florida, Georgia and other states. Among other things, it's a great opportunity to deepen awareness of the social determinants of health and practice caring for diverse populations. Looking to the future, Kendall and colleagues are keen to prepare their students for growing trends that will impact their work as clinicians including team-based care, the aging of the population and the increase in climate-related health problems. “We ask ourselves what does the future of health and society look like in ten years and what is needed from physician assistants? Our job is to identify what medical education then needs to look like in order to meet those future challenges.” This expansive conversation with host Hillary Acer also touches on Emory's cognitive apprenticeship curriculum, scaffolded learning, making primary care an easier choice of specialty and the growing interest in point of care ultrasound.Mentioned in this episode:Emory University School of Medicine PA Program Emory Farm Worker Project

Physician Assistant remains one of the fastest growing professions in the US, and the expansion of their role in healthcare delivery seems to be growing just as quickly. One of the biggest changes in that regard, according to Jonathan Bowser of the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, is that states are opening up opportunities for PAs to practice with more autonomy to fill needs in the healthcare system. “That requires PA education programs to think about who are we putting out there, what environments they are going into, and how do we best prepare them for those environments,” says Bowser, who runs the school's Child Health Associate/Physician Assistant Program (CHAPA), one of the oldest PA training programs in the country. The need to adapt their program to these new realities and the desire to take advantage of advances in learning science led CHAPA to overhaul its curriculum in recent years. The result is a ‘spiral curriculum' - an iterative approach to learning that reinforces key concepts and knowledge as students progress through their years of training.  Join host Hillary Acer as she learns about the underpinnings of CHAPA's curricular approach, what the program is doing to prepare PAs to be leaders and the growing importance of residencies and fellowships to prepare PAs to work in clinical specialties. Mentioned in this episode: CHA/PA Program OverviewManaging Transitions by William BridgesMake It Stick by Peter Brown

Over the last 20 years, she has served as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Career Development at William Beaumont School of Medicine, director of pre-health post-bacc certificate program at Sacred Heart University, and the director of the pre-health advisement also at Sacred Heart University. In those roles and before joining Accepted earlier this year, she advised thousands of students in the following pre-health tracks: pre-med, pre-PA, pre-vet, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy, pre-PT, pre-OT, pre-accelerated nursing and pre-optometry, as well as applicants to master's programs in exercise science, biomedical sciences, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, athletic training, public health, and applied nutrition. That's her breadth. Right now, we're going to go in depth and we're going to focus on physician assistant admissions.  Dr. Wherley, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. [2:32] Thank you for having me. What do physician assistants do? [2:36] Sure. Great question. So a physician assistant or PA, which I may use during this podcast is a licensed medical professional, first and foremost, who holds an advanced degree beyond their undergrad, which is typically a master's degree, and they're licensed to provide direct patient care. So if you've ever received care from a PA, it's important to know they are fully qualified and fully trained, and their scope of practice really encompasses quite a bit. And so their scope of practice starts with the ability to take medical histories, to conduct physical exams, to diagnose and treat illnesses. They can also develop treatment plans and order and interpret tests. They can prescribe medication, which sometimes people may or may not know. They can counsel on preventative care, they can perform certain procedures that's very specific. They can assist in surgeries. They are not the primary care provider in surgeries, but they can assist. They can make rounds in hospitals and nursing homes, and they can also do clinical research. So while that is a long list of their scope of practice, I'm sure it's not exhaustive, but PAs are certainly a team player and a welcome provider on a healthcare team. What are some of the restrictions on what they can do? [4:20] Well, in most states, PAs do not operate or practice, and by I say operate, I mean independently practice. PAs are restricted to be practicing under the supervision of a physician, an MD typically, and again, that's in most states. And one of my specific things that I noted is they can assist in ...

Before his new role, he was a PA in private practice and also Associate Program Director for the Physician Assistant Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. But when he spoke to Cedarville President Dr. Thomas white in 2019, and found out that his alma mater was thinking about a PA program, the wheels were set in motion for him and his wife, Charity, and their seven children, ages 2½ to 17, to make a major life change.Even though COVID-19 impacted their transition to Cedarville, the Grahame family has been welcomed by long-time friends to the campus community. What is the U. of Iowa's PA program all about [Show Summary] The role of Physician Assistant was introduced less than 60 years ago and the University of Iowa's Physician Assistant Program has been at the forefront since day one. Tony Brenneman, the Program Director shares what the program offers and how applicants can gain an invitation to the 25-student cohort.  Interview with Anthony Brenneman, Program Director at University of Iowa's Physician Assistant Program [Show Notes] Welcome to the 462nd episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Thanks for joining me today. This interview is all about getting accepted to PA school, specifically the University of Iowa's PA program, which began a half-century ago in 1972. In addition to listening to today's interview, I'd like to invite you to download Accepted's free guide, 10 Tips For Acceptance to a Physician Assistant Program. Grab your free copy for advice on selecting the best PA program for you, writing your personal statement, interviewing effectively, and simply presenting the best application you possibly can. It's a competitive field out there, so you need to do the best you can.  Today's guest, Tony Brenneman, grew up in Oregon where he also earned his Bachelor's in Psychology and Piano Performance from Linfield College and an MSW from Portland State University. He worked as a social worker until he learned about the PA profession and joined the University of Iowa's PA program graduating with his Master's of Physician Assistant Studies in 1996. He worked in Bone Marrow Transplant, and in 2004, joined the UIPA program and became the Program Director in 2012 and a professor at the University of Iowa's Carver College of Medicine in 2014.  Before we dive into Iowa's PA program, can you talk a little bit about your own journey, from studying piano performance to social work in Oregon to then becoming a PA in Iowa? [2:19] It does seem a bit convoluted, doesn't it? I think I had a journey that in some respects is very much like other people that have been thinking about joining the PA profession - they've started off in one career pathway or had bumps along the road, and thought, "Well, this isn't a field that I can get into anymore so I'm going to go off and try other things." I will say when I headed off to my undergraduate experience, I thought for sure I was going to go into medicine. As a 17-year-old, I was a young one going off into college, I wasn't quite ready to put my foot down to the pedal the way I needed to at that point in time. I'd always enjoyed playing the piano so I had enrolled with a biology and piano performance plan. When I decided I needed to think about other things, I decided to switch it to piano performance and psychology thinking along the lines of music therapy. I still really wanted to be in that healthcare background so that's where that was going at the time. Once I graduated and learned more about music therapy, I decided it probably wasn't a field that fit who I was so I looked around to see what I could do with that psych degree, and a Master's of Social Work was one of the things that I could do. There were social workers that worked in hospital settings, so that was what really intrigued me. After I graduated, I went on to a hospital there in Portland, Oregon. I started off working in the emergency room, working a 1:00 AM shift on the floor so I really got to see a lot of different experiences and different roles. After that, I worked at their rehabilitation center for several years before moving to Iowa in the neurology department. I did that because I was ready for a change of pace and thought, “Why not Iowa?” So I moved to Iowa, and through my wife, I learned about the PA profession. On this episode of The Pursuit of Health Podcast we dive further into the realm of public health by pausing to learn about the invaluable role of the Physician Assistant.  We are fortunate to have a frontline clinician, educator and pioneer, Joseph M. Daleo, as our guest to take us through this topic. Major Daleo is an active member of the US Army Reserve and holds a Doctorate Degree of Physician Assistant Studies from Touro University. He wears many honorable hats including an Assistant Professorship and the Directorship of Clinical Operations at NY Touro College's Physician Assistant Program.  He is a Clinical Instructor for SUNY Stony Brook's Family Medicine and Nurse Practitioner Program as well as the Supervising Physician Assistant for the American Family Care's Covid-19 Mitigation and Vaccination Program.  Major Daleo begins our discussion by taking us through his often bumpy personal journey to pursue a health career as a practicing Physician Assistant and educator. In so doing, he emphasizes that Physician Assistants are a vital and unique profession within the US healthcare system. He explains the honorable history of the Physician Assistant profession in the US and marvels at the exponential growth of this field both domestically and globally over the past few decades. Our guest sheds some very important light on the misconceptions about the Physician Assistant model, stressing that this model supports a complementary, not adversarial, interaction of healthcare professionals on behalf of the patient. He provides us with a sobering reminder of the serious gaps and failures of our current system and provides much needed recommendations to make healthcare partnerships stronger to address the disparities of acute and chronic disease.  He sees physician assistants as one of the critical  “force multipliers” of a potentially robust approach to healthcare reform.  We finish our fascinating discussion with Major Daleo wisely advising us all to continue to adopt the pioneer spirit that made our health system exceptional in the first place.  He urges us to remain open-minded so that we may learn and apply new preventative and treatment modalities to the benefit of our patients, clinicians and society.  Dr. Fethke and the team at The Pursuit of Health Podcast  look forward to our audience's feedback. We can be reached @drfethkemd on Facebook and Instagram, and our upcoming website - drfethkemd.com.  References:https://www.researchgate.net/publication/236248847_Origins_of_the_physician_assistant_movement_in_the_United_Stateshttps://pahx.org/timeline/https://www.healthleadersmedia.com/clinical-care/why-physician-assistants-and-nurse-practitioners-need-supervision-say-physician-groupshttps://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2020/01/stop-the-war-on-pas-and-nps.htmlhttps://journalofethics.ama-assn.org/article/physician-assistants-and-their-role-primary-care/2012-05https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/physician-assistants.htmhttps://bemoacademicconsulting.com/blog/pa-vs-md

Studies show men are twice as likely to go two years between doctor visits and 40% only go if they have a serious issue on their hands. So, what keeps me from seeking routine medical care? Elaine Johannes, the Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University and Brad Dirks, the associate director of the Physician Assistant Program at K-State, say society's norms – telling boys to brush it off, walk it off or don't cry – may make it more difficult for men to take care of their health. Sound Living is a weekly public affairs program addressing issues related to families and consumers. It is hosted by Jeff Wichman. Each episode shares the expertise of K-State specialists in fields such as child nutrition, food safety, adult development and aging, youth development, family resource management, physical fitness and more. K‑State Research and Extension is a short name for the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service, a program designed to generate and distribute useful knowledge for the well‑being of Kansans. “We can conduct research, perform lab procedures, order and interpret tests, assist in surgery, and even own our own medical practices in some states,” says Brianna Cardenas, director of Clinical Education of the Physician Assistant Program at Keck Graduate Institute. Sonia Otte, founding program director for the MS Program in PA Studies at KGI says that range is a big draw for prospective students once they are introduced to it. “I think just knowing that the PA profession is as versatile as you want it to be is what is the most exciting thing about it,” she says. Both see building awareness of the many dimensions of PA practice, especially among younger people and those from diverse communities, as a key part of their mission. Another is teaching cultural competence and the kind of listening skills that allow providers to see the whole lives of their patients. “We teach our students to learn from their patients’ stories and experiences. Oftentimes, you can find the thing you’re looking for in these types of conversations because they reveal their circumstances and abilities.” Join host Rishi Desai for this illuminating conversation about an occupation that, as Cardenas happily points out, ranks #1 on the U.S. News & World Report “Best Jobs List.”
