Wildfire and Power Outages: Food Safety for Freezers and Refrigerators

Food Safety in a Minute

Transcript [Music] From Washington State University Extension, welcome to a special podcast series on wildfires and food safety. Wildfires may not directly threaten your home, but extended power outages can create serious food safety risks. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service recommend preparing insulated coolers, ice, and frozen gel packs for use during evacuation. If power is cut, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. An unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours (40 degrees Fahrenheit or below); a full freezer for 48 hours, and a half-full freezer about 24 hours. If possible, take perishable food to a friend's house. If evacuated and power is off for more than 24 hours, assume food is potentially unsafe. That's true if power is restored while you're evacuated, especially if temperatures cannot be verified after power restoration. I'm Susie Craig. Thanks for listening to 7 podcasts in this series. Can Wildfire Smoke Contaminate Food?

Food Safety in a Minute

Transcript [Music] I'm Susie Craig and this is a special series of podcasts focused on Wildfires and Food Safety. Wildfire smoke and heat can contaminate food even when packaging looks undamaged. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service advises discarding food directly exposed to smoke or fumes because contaminants can penetrate cardboard, plastic wrap, and other permeable materials. Refrigerator and freezer seals are not always airtight, meaning food stored inside a smoke-damaged building may be affected and require disposal. The primary concern is contamination of food, packaging, and food-contact surfaces. After smoke damage, some commercially canned food can be saved. Learn about the cleaning process by listening to After a Wildfire: Handling Undamaged Commercially Canned Foods in this series of podcasts. Or, visit the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service for additional guidance. From Washington State University Extension, listen to this series and Food Safety in a Minute. Send us Fan MailIn this short episode, Chasity and Scott sit down with Eastern Kentucky University seniors Reuben Jasinski and Kaitlyn Cully at the IAAI International Training Conference to discuss their fire research involving refrigerators using R-600a butane refrigerant. Their study examined whether fire investigators can distinguish between fires originating inside the refrigerator compressor compartment and fires originating externally based on resulting fire patterns and component damage. The students discuss burn testing, compressor data plate damage, refrigerator compartment fire behavior, door pressurization, refrigerant-line failures, and how the additional fuel from butane can influence fire development and observed patterns. They also explain what their findings could mean for determining the area of origin during refrigerator fire investigations and identify opportunities for future research involving realistic kitchen environments and additional fuel loads.Thank you for listening! If you enjoyed the episode, give us 5 stars, hit the follow button, and subscribe on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and anywhere you are listening in from. Follow us on social media!Instagram: @infocusfire_podcastLinkedIn: INFOCUS podcastFacebook: INFOCUS podcastTikTok: @infocus_podcast

In fact, many arguments become difficult to resolve because two separate problems are being confused as one. Understanding the difference can completely change the conversation. Source: Jim Ferrell author of The Anatomy of Peace (https://amzn.to/4erYLUP). Imagine grocery shopping every day because food spoiled almost immediately. Imagine no frozen food, no leftovers, no supermarkets stocked with fresh produce year-round, and no easy way to transport food across long distances. Just 150 years ago, that was normal life. Then refrigeration arrived and quietly transformed almost everything about how humans eat, live, work, and build cities. Yet this remarkable technology has also created unexpected consequences for our health, food systems, the environment, and even our relationship with nature. Nicola Twilley, writer, co-host of the popular Gastropod podcast (https://gastropod.com/category/podcasts/), and author of Frostbite: How Refrigeration Changed Our Food, Our Planet, and Ourselves (https://amzn.to/3VuXNP0), reveals the fascinating story behind one of the most important inventions in human history. Volcanoes are among the most destructive forces on Earth. They bury cities, disrupt climates, and unleash enormous power with little warning. Yet without volcanoes, life on Earth might never have evolved the way it did—and may not exist at all. Where does lava come from? Why do volcanoes erupt where they do? Why do some remain dormant for centuries before suddenly awakening? And what role have volcanoes played in shaping the planet we call home? Tamsin Mather, professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford and author of Adventures in Volcanoland: What Volcanoes Tell Us About the World and Ourselves (https://amzn.to/3xk4DyI), explains why volcanoes are not just geological curiosities but one of the fundamental forces that made Earth what it is today. Along the way, they collect far more than receipts, lipstick, and keys. Researchers have found that purses can become surprisingly dirty, and what accumulates on them can be more than just kinda gross—it may pose a legitimate health concern. https://finderskeypurse.com/blogs/finderskeypurse-com-blog/how-dirty-is-your-purse-plus-how-to-keep-it-clean PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS POCKET HOSE: For a limited time, when you purchase a new Pocket Hose Ballistic, you'll get a FREE 360 degree rotating pocket pivot and a FREE thumb drive nozzle! This week on The Daily Grateful with Michael Crose, Michael takes us on a hilarious and heartfelt Friday journey through broken refrigerators, exploding rice disasters, garage cleanouts, family chaos, rising gas prices, and the surprising abundance hidden inside ordinary life. What starts as a frustrating appliance meltdown somehow turns into a warm reflection on gratitude, aging, health, children, nephews, old memories, and the kind of wealth you can't deposit in a bank. Michael shares stories about raising five kids, learning what real abundance means, and why hearing little feet running through the house once made him feel richer than any millionaire. There's laughter, honesty, a little complaining (because it wouldn't be Michael without it), and a whole lot of appreciation for the people who show up when life gets messy. From survival-camp daughters to dependable nephews and brothers who bring canes when you can't walk, this episode reminds us that gratitude often hides inside the imperfect moments. It's funny. It's touching. It's wonderfully human. And yes… the refrigerator is still dead. I received this email in the early days of teaching parents how to use The Spark Station. "You may have seen this. It's a picture book called The Pink Refrigerator by Tim Egan. This illustrates the secret of the Spark Station in an inspiring way. A junk dealer who likes to do–not much–finds a pink refrigerator that holds something new for him every day, and he gets excited about life and learning, closes shop, and sets off to explore the world. I thought you might enjoy this if you hadn't seen it. Happy reading, Cathy D." I was intrigued, so I went to the library and found the book. Cathy's description was spot on. The Pink Refrigerator is the Spark Station. It's a beautiful story about how we can inspire children to explore things that might not have occurred to them before. Today, I am sharing a personal experience of how experiencing new things can help children find the greatness inside themselves.

In this episode, I'm debriefing the Naples Experience (my Signature in-person event), but not in the way you might expect. Yes, there was a $20,000 refrigerator, a private chef that works with the cast of Yellowstone, luxury showrooms, a private sunset cruise, and homes ranging from $8 million to $84 million. But the REAL transformation happened when the designers stepped away from the endless client requests and daily to-do lists and immersed themselves in a room full of smart, driven, curious women who are building businesses at the next level. In this episode, I'm talking about why luxury has to be experienced before it can be confidently sold, how proximity and exposure demystify the high end, and why unforgettable client experiences are what create raving fans.Ready to stop waiting for better opportunities and start creating access to them?Join me for my FREE live workshop, The V.I.P.
