On July 24, 1997, 24-year-old Amy Wroe Bechtel set out for what should have been an ordinary afternoon near Lander, Wyoming. A rising athlete with Olympic dreams, Amy was in the middle of mapping the course for a 10K race she was organizing. By the end of the day, her white Toyota station wagon sat abandoned, her to-do list unfinished, and Amy herself was nowhere to be found. Despite a massive search effort that involved hundreds of people, cadaver dogs, and aircraft, no trace of Amy was ever recovered. If you are interested in bonus content for our show or in getting some Coffee and Cases swag, please consider joining Patreon. Amy Wroe Bechtel disappeared on July 24, 1997, in the small town of Lander, Wyoming. A 24-year-old newlywed and avid runner, Amy set out for a jog on a rural loop in the Wind River Mountains and never returned. Her car was found abandoned at a turnout along the road, and her keys, wallet, and other personal belongings were left inside. The search that followed was massive—hundreds of volunteers, search dogs, helicopters, and divers scoured the rugged terrain—but no trace of Amy was ever found. Her disappearance shook the close-knit community and quickly drew national attention.Suspicion soon fell on her husband, Steve Bechtel, a climbing enthusiast, after investigators discovered a troubling journal entry where he had written about violence toward women. Though he denied involvement and has never been charged, the cloud of suspicion has followed him for decades. Other theories emerged, including the possibility that Amy was abducted by a stranger or fell victim to serial killer Dale Wayne Eaton, who was active in Wyoming at the time. Yet none of these leads ever produced answers. Nearly three decades later, Amy's case remains unsolved, a haunting mystery that continues to weigh heavily on her family and on the town of Lander.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comTonya Teske, a 16-year-old from Billings, Montana, vanished on October 11, 2001, after telling her parents she was going for a walk. She never returned home. Within days, her body was discovered in a wooded area on the outskirts of town, sparking an outpouring of grief and fear across the community. Investigators determined that Tonya had been strangled, and the brutality of the crime shocked her classmates and neighbors. For a time, her murder looked like it might be quickly solved, as authorities pursued leads and interviewed those closest to her.But the case soon grew cold. Despite various theories and investigative efforts, no one has ever been charged with her killing. Over the years, her name has surfaced in discussions about unsolved crimes in Montana, with some speculating whether a serial predator could have been involved. Others point to missed opportunities in the early investigation that might have left crucial evidence unexplored. Today, more than two decades later, Tonya's murder remains officially unsolved, an open wound for her family and a reminder of the fragility of justice in cases where answers never come.“Lil Miss Murder” refers to the long-unsolved killing of Lisa Marie Kimmell, an 18-year-old from Billings, Montana, who vanished in March 1988 while driving to visit her boyfriend in Wyoming. Nicknamed “Lil Miss” because of her personalized black Honda CRX license plate, Lisa was last seen in Casper, Wyoming, after a routine traffic stop. A week later, her body was discovered in the North Platte River near Casper; she had been brutally assaulted and murdered. For years, the case baffled investigators and haunted both her family and the wider region, as no suspect was ever firmly identified despite widespread coverage and multiple leads. The mystery stretched on for over a decade until advances in DNA testing finally provided a break. In 2002, authorities connected evidence from Lisa's case to Dale Wayne Eaton, a drifter with a violent history, who was later convicted and sentenced to death for her murder. Eaton's property even revealed a buried vehicle that some believed to be Lisa's missing car. Though his death sentence was overturned in 2014 due to procedural issues, Eaton remains in prison, and many believe he may have been responsible for other disappearances in the region. Lisa's case became one of the most notorious in Wyoming history, a chilling reminder of how long justice can be delayed, and why her haunting nickname—“Lil Miss Murder”—still echoes decades later.bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
Cary Stayner is a convicted American serial killer whose crimes shocked the nation in 1999. He was the older brother of Steven Stayner, whose childhood abduction and dramatic escape years later had already made the family infamous. While Steven was once portrayed as a tragic hero, Cary's life spiraled into darkness. Working as a handyman near Yosemite National Park, Cary outwardly seemed quiet and unremarkable, but he harbored violent fantasies from a young age. His troubled background, compounded by his brother's notoriety, set the stage for his eventual eruption into brutal violence that would stain his name and overshadow the legacy of his family. The Yosemite Village murders refer to the killings of four women in and around Yosemite National Park in 1999. Cary Stayner first targeted three tourists—Carole Sund, her daughter Juli, and Juli's friend Silvina Pelosso—whom he abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered, before later killing Joie Armstrong, a Yosemite park naturalist. These crimes terrorized the community and drew massive media attention, not only because of their brutality but also because they occurred in such a famed natural landmark. Stayner was arrested and confessed, later being sentenced to death. The case became one of the most infamous examples of serial murder in California history, forever linking Yosemite with a dark chapter of violence and betrayal of trust.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:https://www.outsideonline.com/adventure-travel/yosemite-horror/
Billy Kipkorir Chemirmir was a Kenyan-American murderer and suspected serial killer linked to a string of deaths among elderly women in North Texas. Between 2016 and 2018, he is believed to have posed as a caregiver or maintenance worker to gain access to senior living communities, where he smothered victims—often with pillows—before stealing jewelry and valuables. Though investigators connected him to more than 20 suspicious deaths, he was formally indicted on 22 capital murder counts. Ultimately, he was convicted of two murders in Dallas County and sentenced to life in prison without parole. In September 2023, while serving his sentence in the Coffield Unit in Texas, Chemirmir was killed by his cellmate. His crimes exposed systemic flaws in how elderly deaths were classified, as many of his victims' deaths were initially written off as natural causes, delaying recognition of his pattern. The case sparked outrage and demands for reforms in oversight of senior housing facilities and postmortem investigations, highlighting the vulnerability of elderly populations to predatory violence.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Send us a textBetween June of 1911 and June of 1912, America's heartland lived in fear. From Oregon to Iowa, entire families were slaughtered in their beds — curtains drawn, lamps dimmed, the blunt edge of an axe left behind. The trail of terror ran through Ardenwald, Rainier, Colorado Springs, Monmouth, Ellsworth, and Paola, before ending with the infamous Villisca murders. Was it the work of one shadowy figure riding the rails, or a series of eerie coincidences? Detectives of the day struggled with poor science, conflicting rumors, and too many suspects — men like Henry Lee Moore, William Mansfield, Rev. George Kelly, Charles Marzyck, Nathan B. Harvey, and George Wilson. None were ever proven guilty. In this episode of Curator135, we retrace that chilling year of violence, the communities shattered in silence, and the questions that remain more than a century later.Support the show

From Donald Trump summoning 800 generals to discuss military strategy to the shocking power of DNA exhumations solving decades-old serial murders, this episode dives deep into the state of law, order, and oversight in America. We also explore the UK's rollout of BritCard, a digital ID system that could control work, housing, and speech, and how “speech police” are enforcing compliance for social media posts. Add to that the looming U.S. government shutdown over debates on illegal immigrant healthcare, and you've got a whirlwind episode examining power, accountability, and the technology shaping our freedoms—and limits—at home and abroad.
Donald Trump calls in nearly 800 generals for an unprecedented meeting with new “War Chief” Pete Hegseth—what's really going on behind closed doors? Meanwhile, in Greenville, former police chief Ken Miller cracks open one of the most chilling cold cases in America by exhuming a body, extracting DNA, and tying a forgotten suspect to the infamous 1991 Austin “Yogurt Shop” murders—plus multiple rapes and killings across the country. We dive into how genealogy databases, AI, and cell phone data are revolutionizing criminal investigations, why confessions can be dangerously unreliable, and how technology may make serial killing virtually impossible in the future.

On September 29, 2025, authorities had a press conference where they discussed the latest developments in an infamous quadruple murder — the yogurt shop murders — in Austin, Texas. Detective Daniel Jackson of the Austin Police Department mentioned but did not name a 1998 cold case homicide that occurred in Kentucky that they linked to Robert Eugene Brashers. On December 6, 1991, Robert Eugene Brashers is believed to have bound, sexually assaulted, and murdered 17-year-old Jennifer Harbison, 15-year-old Sarah Harbison, 17-year-old Eliza Thomas, and 13-year-old Amy Ayers. Their bodies were found in the burning I Can't Believe It's Yogurt! shop in Austin, Texas. Police also found evidence from a .380 firearm linked to Brashers. Evidence from that same gun also ties into the 1998 Kentucky case.On November 6, 1998, somebody murdered 43-year-old Linda Rutledge. She was killed in her parents' business, the Nixon Hearing Aid Center, shot multiple times. Then the building was set on fire. The Long Island Serial Killings, also known as the Gilgo Beach Murders or the Craigslist Ripper case, is an unsolved serial murder investigation centered around the discovery of numerous human remains on Long Island, New York. The case has been ongoing since 2010 and remains unsolved as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021.The initial discovery took place on December 11, 2010, when police were searching for a missing woman named Shannan Gilbert, a sex worker who had gone to meet a client in Oak Beach, Suffolk County. During the search, police found the remains of four women in the vicinity of Gilgo Beach. These victims were later identified as Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Lynn Costello, all of whom were also involved in sex work.As the investigation progressed, additional remains were discovered in the same area. In March and April 2011, six more sets of remains were found, along with the remains of an unidentified toddler, who came to be known as "Baby Doe" or "Jane Doe #6." The additional victims were identified as Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, Jane Doe #6 (the toddler), and an Asian male dressed in women's clothing. The police discovered that many of the victims had connections to the sex trade and had advertised their services on websites like Craigslist. This led investigators to suspect that a serial killer, dubbed the "Long Island Serial Killer" or "Craigslist Ripper," was specifically targeting sex workers in the area. The case gained significant media attention and sparked a large-scale investigation involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The search for additional evidence continued over the years, including the use of cadaver dogs, aerial searches, and the excavation of specific areas. Despite these efforts, no further bodies were found. The investigation faced various challenges and controversies. Shannan Gilbert's disappearance and death were initially treated as unrelated to the serial killings. However, her death was later attributed to accidental drowning. The mishandling of the case and the delayed response to her initial 911 call raised questions about the police's handling of the investigation. In September 2017, the Suffolk County Police released new evidence, including photos of a belt that they believed may have belonged to the killer. They also released a recording of an anonymous phone call made by a man claiming to have information about the murders. Then in July of 2023, everything changed as Rex Heuermann, an architect was arrested for the crimes. In this episode we hear from an escort who had a run in with Heuermann who says that she got bad vibes from him right away and that he loved talking about the Gilgo Beach murders. to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonamil.comsource:Escort who dated Gilgo Beach suspected killer Rex Heuermann gives eerie details of nearly becoming one of his victims as he talked about murders like it 'was enjoyable for him' | Daily Mail Online
Summary of the Case and Victims:The discovery of Shannan Gilbert: The case came to light in May 2010 when 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, an escort, disappeared in the Oak Beach area of Long Island. Her disappearance sparked an extensive search, and during that process, police discovered the remains of other bodies in the vicinity. The initial findings: In December 2010, the remains of four women were found along the remote stretch of Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach. All of them were wrapped in burlap sacks. These victims were later identified as:a. Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25): She had gone missing in July 2007. b. Melissa Barthelemy (24): She disappeared in July 2009. c. Amber Lynn Costello (27): She went missing in September 2010. d. Megan Waterman (22): She disappeared in June 2010.Additional victims: In April 2011, the remains of six more people were discovered along Ocean Parkway, including:a. Jessica Taylor (20): She had been missing since July 2003. b. Jane Doe #6: Unidentified victim. c. Jane Doe #7: Unidentified victim. d. Jane Doe #8: Unidentified victim.Disappearance of an escort: In March 2012, 22-year-old escort, Shannan Gilbert's remains were finally found in a marshy area near Oak Beach. Her death was ruled as an accidental drowning, but some believe she might have been connected to the killer.Other potential victims: The investigation also probed the possibility of additional victims connected to the Long Island Serial Killer. Among them was an unidentified Asian male found in Nassau County in 2000, and a dismembered female found in 1996 in Manorville, New York, which was also attributed to a potential serial killer. The doors of the investigation were blown open in July of 2023 when New York Architect Rex Heuermann was arrested and alleged to be the man responsible for the murders. As the investigation has rolled on and more has been learned, the scope of the investigation has expanded to several states. In this episode we get back to the conversation about Rex Heuermann and his possible activity in Las Vegas as we explore the story of Victoria Camara.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Eerie link between LISK suspect Rex Heuermann and NJ mom Victoria Camara's murder probed after 'scary' case similarities | The US Sun (the-sun.com)
As the fallout in the aftermath of the arrest of Rex Heuermann continues to rain down on all of those involved, his wife, Asa Ellerup and her two children Victoria and Christopher gave an update through their lawyer about their ordeal. It was revealed that not only is Asa Ellerup dealing with her husband being an alleged serial killer, she also has breast and skin cancer. Her insurance, according to the lawyer, is due to expire in sixty days since it was tethered to Rex Heuermann's employment. On the flip side, the lawyer for the Gilbert family, John Ray had a completely different take on things. In this episodee we take a look at both sides of the coin and break down the latest news. to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Rex Heuermann's wife struggling to pay for cancer treatment, wants to sue police – NBC New York

It's been a little over a week since a suspect has been arrested for the Gilgo Murders. That suspect? A man named Rex Heuermann who lived only a handful of miles from the site where the remains were found. He shared this house with his wife, his daughter and his step son. Little did anyone know what sort of monster was lurking within those walls. In this episode, we take a look at a basic outline of the events leading up to the arrest of Rex Heuermann. to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Gilgo Beach murders: What led to suspect Rex Heuermann's arrest (usatoday.com)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.
One of the first things that investigators do when a serial killer type of suspect is arrested is dive into the cold cases that remained unsolved. Especially when there is an area as large as the tri state to examine for possible connections. However, that is the task that the police find before them in New York and in other places where Rex Heuermann was known to frequent. In this episode we get an update on the investigation into Heuermann and any possible connection to unsolved cold cases. to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Gilgo Beach investigators comb unsolved murders for potential ties to suspect - ABC NewsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.
Today we talk with Caroline Fraser, author of the new book "Murderland: Crime and Bloodlust in the Time of Serial Killers."
Rex Heuermann, the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer, has been charged with the 2000 murder of Valerie Mack, marking his seventh alleged victim. Mack, a 24-year-old escort from Philadelphia, disappeared in 2000, and her dismembered remains were discovered in Manorville and near Gilgo Beach in 2000 and 2011, respectively. Investigators linked Heuermann to Mack's death through DNA evidence, including hairs from his family members found on her remains, and the discovery of violent pornographic images on his electronic devices that depicted injuries similar to those inflicted on MackDuring a court appearance, Heuermann pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges related to Mack's death. Prosecutors allege that Heuermann meticulously planned the murders, utilizing a document outlining methods and tools for the killings. This latest indictment adds to the multiple charges Heuermann faces for the murders of other women whose remains were found in the Gilgo Beach area. He has been held without bail since his arrest in July 2023, with his next court appearance scheduled for January 15.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Gilgo suspect Rex Heuermann ‘used eerie work skills to plot Valerie Mack murder' as trophies unearthed, expert claims – The US Sun | The US Sun

Rex Heuermann, the architect that has been accused of murdering three women and is the prime suspect in a fourth murder was very careful about his DNA transfering to his victims, according to Matt Murphy, a former prosecutor who has tried many murder cases in his career. According to Murphy, he would not be surprised to find out as the investigation continues, that Rex Heuermann went to great lengths to try and avoid his DNA being found on the victims after their bodies were discovered. In this episode we hear how Matt Murphy thinks he accomplished this and how the investigators plan to use DNA to convict Heuermann. Burner phones played a crucial role in leading police to Rex Heuermann, as investigators were able to trace a network of disposable devices used to communicate with the victims and carry out the killings. Authorities discovered that the same anonymous numbers had been used to contact multiple women who were later found dead along Gilgo Beach. Through painstaking digital forensics, law enforcement linked these burner phones to a primary device associated with Heuermann, triangulating locations and tracking pings that matched his home in Massapequa Park and his Manhattan office. Additionally, investigators connected the burner activity to online accounts used to solicit sex workers and search for violent pornography, further tying the digital footprint back to Heuermann. The meticulous tracing of these otherwise untraceable phones ultimately helped build the foundation of the case against him.An unnamed woman has come forward claiming she narrowly escaped from suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann after a disturbing encounter when she was just 18 years old. Working at a Manhattan club in 1996, she says she was asked to deliver cocaine to Heuermann, but the situation quickly turned alarming. Once alone with him, she alleges that he exposed himself and began sharing deeply disturbing pedophilic fantasies. Fearing for her life, she pulled out a taser and held it to his neck, threatening him until he let her go. The woman never reported the incident to police at the time, fearing she wouldn't be believed, but after Heuermann's arrest, she recognized his face in news reports and felt compelled to speak out. Her account adds to the growing pattern of women describing deeply unsettling and predatory behavior by Heuermann long before his 2023 arrest.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
