We keep planning our reunions, and they never pan out, and it might result in an impromptu Brain Candy meetup. We hear why women in leadership roles are criticized at a much higher frequency than their male counterparts and for more superficial reasons (big surprise). We discuss a new policy at a restaurant who won't let anyone under 30 inside. Hear why a paralympian was disqualified from the games for a tattoo, and we're furious. We get tattoo placement tips from our resident expert, Sarah. And we hear from a sound recordist who spent 30 years recording the noise in a certain location only to hear it become less natural and more industrial.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get an exclusive 20% off your first order at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYHead to https://www.factormeals.com/braincandy50 and use code braincandy50 to get 50% off your first box plus 20% off your next month.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Have you ever dreamed about going on an expedition? And I don't mean a walk in the deep woods—I mean, going to places most of us couldn't find on a map, and living under some pretty rugged conditions.Well, my guest on this program has done that. In fact, he's been on more than one expedition, to some of the roughest places on the planet. Meet Tony Baylis. Tony is an Australia-based wildlife sound recordist who sometimes bills himself as a ‘bird vocabularist'—meaning, someone who specializes in the unique calls of individual species. I caught up with him recently while he was in the UK, visiting our mutual friend Roger Boughton, and we had a great conversation.
George Vlad records sounds. He likes to focus on pristine natural soundscapes free from human influence, of which there are less and less every day. His quest to escape human-made noise takes him to remote and sometimes inhospitable parts of the world. This is more than fine with George as he loves exploring and doesn't shy away from adventure. His recent projects include the blockbuster movie Dune Part 2, Planet Earth III and Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King and Sony Playstation video game Horizon Forbidden West. Otago Skinks, Grand Skinks and other native lizards had gone locally extinct due to introduced pests & habitat destruction and now they are making a slow but steady comeback within the protected space. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the global events of the last couple of weeks. Following the battering of Storm Babet, this week's episode offers a space for us to reflect on a world that can be often violent and far from perfect. Journal entry:13th October, Friday“Battered by the winds of the world I stop to watch the free-flight of rooks Diving from an oak into the full force Of a westerly gale.Gothic wings outspread, They surf the blast Hanging on its back In a rage of ecstatic life.I stand alone below Looking upwards And for a short while My feet have left the ground And I master the gale.”Episode Information:In this episode I read Seán Street's poem ‘Listening with a spider' from his 2021 collection The Sound Recordist published by Maytree Press.I also read an extract from Melanie Challenger's (2023) essay: ‘Animals in the room: Why We Can and Should Listen to Other Species'.I also refer to Thomas Hobbes' (1651) Leviathan, Tennyson's (1850) ‘In Memoriam', and Max Richter's (2003/2018) album The Blue Notebooks. The award-winning Sound Recordist and Musician, Chris Watson nominates his hero, Ludwig Koch. In 1889, German-born Koch was the first person ever to record birdsong (at the age of 8) onto a wax cylinder recorder, given to him by his father as a toy. Despite a promising baritone voice and being a very good violinist, the first world war put paid to Ludwig Koch's career as a musician and he began working for the German branch of EMI recording cityscapes, before going on to invent the ‘sound book', a nascent sort of multimedia that became very popular in Germany before the second world war. As a Jew and an outspoken critic of the Nazi regime, Koch fled Germany in 1936 for England, sadly leaving his many recordings behind. But his theatrical delivery, unique voice and the fact that, as Chris Watson notes, "He was not shy about his achievements", soon made him a household name in broadcasting here in the UK. Chris Watson is joined by emeritus professor Sean Street. Together and with the aid of archive, they marvel over the great lengths Koch went to to capture his 'performers'. Amy returns with a federal budget analysis and is joined by politics regulars Chris Wallace and Rachel Withers. Solomon Islander journalist Dorothy Wickham speaks from Honiara about what life is really like in Solomon Islands. She explains the political realities and domestic concerns of Solomon Islanders as their country finds itself in the middle of a geopolitical tussle between China, the US and Australia. Dorothy is editor at the Melanesian News Network and her latest essay is published in Australian Foreign Affairs. Plus, a special nature conversation with Andrew Skeoch, one of Australia's best-known nature sound recordists. Andrew will talk about his fascinating field work and take us through some of his nature sound recordings of birds and mammals in the forests and deserts of Europe, Australia and Solomon Islands. He also discusses an upcoming immersive sonic walk and workshop he is running, which invites participants to partake in sound walking as an active creative practice. Andrew will appear at Acoustic Ecologies as part of Open Nature on Saturday 20th May at the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen. His new book is called, Deep Listening To Nature.
Darrin Wassom made an envious (and courageous) career change: He went from a long, successful career as a cybersecurity specialist to being a newly-minted recordist, capturing and sharing the sounds of the natural world. His story is more than just the story of a shifted career: it's the story of someone for whom passion, and balance, and family, and life are more important than career. This is an important story; I hope you enjoy it. You can find Darrin's work at NatureIsMyJam.net, and his Podcast of the same name is available wherever you get your Podcasts. #NatureIsMyJam. @DarrinWassom
Imagine a train passes by on screen and you don't hear the passing train at all or a tiger roars in a film but instead you hear a dog bark. These are not really good examples but I guess you now understand how important sound is, in film making, but unfortunately, in the real world, the attitude towards sound is the exact opposite. The value of sound in the Indian film industry is highly underrated. Sound design is the kind of skill in filmmaking, the presence of which is never given enough credit for, but the absence is sorely missed. In the second part of my conversation with professor Emeritus and sound recordist and designer Indrajit Neogi, we continue from where we left of and converse about the importance of sound in films and discuss his contribution in landmark art films like 36 Chowringhee Lane, Khamosh, Vijeta and Ardh Satya Hi, I am Atul Taishete and welcome to my show ‘Conversations with Atul'.
He saw Naxalism real up close when a dear friend joined the movement and was killed by the cops. He studied in a school so seeped in religion that he became an atheist who refused to do his mother's shraadh. He cracked the IIT and instead of going abroad ended up recording and designing sound in films. In the first part of my conversation with Professor Emeritus and Film sound recordist and designer Indrajit Neogi, we conversed about a childhood surrounded by systemic violence, an orthodox schooling that pushed him in the exact opposite direction and naughty memories of rushing to read racy paragraphs in novels during school breaks. Please welcome Mr. Indrajit Neogi, a man who believes that if you look at things from a right perspective, things eventually work out. Hi, I am Atul Taishete and welcome to my show ‘Conversations with Atul'.

I had a great day yesterday with Community Member Richard Hisset. Richard has decided to record his gong bath sessions. And I was privileged to be asked to help him set up his equipment. In this episode we speak to legendary sound mixer Alan O'Duffy who has recorded and mixed three US number one albums, working with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. Alan also recorded and mixed the 1970 number one album - Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. This led the way to a fantastic career in TV and film with a list of credits longer than a A List Block-buster! Mark has known Alan O' Duffy since he started working in the Film & Television industry over thirty years ago. Alan has had a lifetime in sound. In fact, he still works as a Sound Recordist to this very day and very soon will be releasing his memoirs. Mark was particularly interested in in finding out about the start of Alan's illustrious career, when he worked at the world famous Olympic Studios in London. We managed to sit down together in The Titanic Hotel, Liverpool, just before the pandemic took hold, where Mark asked Alan about his amazing experiences and how sound has changed his life. In this final episode of the first series Mike visits the stunning Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire where he chats with Managing Director, Simon Buchanan, Head Gardener, Pat Havers and Fruit Consultant, Chris Lanczak. Waterperry Gardens is steeped in history, most notably with the arrival of the redoubtable Beatrix Havergal, with her partner Avice Sanders in September 1932. Together, at Waterperry, they set up a Horticultural School for Ladies which ran successfully until 1971. The heritage of the horticultural school remains at the core of what is done at Waterperry, with the sharing of staff knowledge with visitors and apprentices alike. The gardens themselves are evidence of Beatrix' horticultural virtuosity, in particular, the classical herbaceous border which remains an object of admiration to visitors, by virtue of the current gardeners' continuing faithfulness to its original conception. Mike chats to Managing Director Simon Buchanan about the history of Waterperry and his role in progressing the future of the gardens. He also chats to Pat Havers, Waterperry's Head Gardener, about her passion for Waterperry and gardening, how she started in the garden some twenty years ago and how they maintain the stunning herbaceous border and lots more. Later, Pat takes Mike to meet Fruit Consultant, Chris Lanczak who takes Mike behind the scenes of their in-house fruit production operation, explaining how everything works, how late frosts have affected some harvests and recalls some of his memories working under Beatrix Havergal. Mike brings the very essence of Waterperry Gardens to this episode, in his first outside broadcast. And if you like visiting gardens, then Waterperry Gardens is a definite addition to your garden visit 'wish-list'. Sound Recordist, Ellie Williams, takes Clare for an audio-rich wander at Abbots Pool in North Somerset. Walking, she says, is as essential to her as food and sleep and – whether she’s recording, or not – she’s always super-aware of the richness of the sounds around her. En route she contemplates why her profession is still so male-dominated and how it can be opened up to more women. Grid Ref for Abbots Pool Car Park: ST 537 730 Producer: Karen Gregor

The Prayer of Examen is a spiritual practice of reviewing the day to retune ourselves to the sacred in ordinary life. Usually lasting 15–20 minutes and done in the evening, the prayer prompts us to remember God’s presence, express gratitude, reflect on the day, and prepare for the day to come. The video above uses contemplative imagery captured from daily life with our coworkers to show how the prayer’s application is both organic and accessible. In this episode, we discuss the Stratford Festival's current modern dress production of Coriolanus directed by Robert Lepage. Québécois director and set designer Robert Lepage makes his Stratford debut this year with a modern dress production of Coriolanus. André Sills stars as Coriolanus and Stratford Grand Dame Lucy Peacock plays Volumnia. Known for mixing film elements (through projections) with theatre, Lepage creates a series of stunning backdrops and sets to make the settings feel almost as real as if it were film. There's a lot of stage magic involved that's an impressive achievement. Part one of this episode focuses on Lepage's design for the production, the world he creates, and how he uses projections.
