As sea levels rise and extreme floods become more frequent, increasing numbers of Irish homeowners are struggling to secure insurance for their properties. Midleton resident Caroline Leahy, who's home was affected by Storm Babet in October 2023, is one of them. In this episode, she talks to Sorcha Pollak about living in constant fear of the next disaster and why the Government response falls short of what is needed to help those impacted. Later on, Environment and Science editor Kevin O'Sullivan on how climate change is impacting the situation. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Eileen Budd is a professional storyteller, the host of the Scottish Folk podcast, and an artist & author in Angus, Scotland. After a Halloween reading about skull broth, Eileen describes where she lives in Scotland and the floods they experienced in last year's Storm Babet. Talk of weather and storms brings up the Gaelic mother goddess, the Cailleach. From these ancestral stories comes a conversation about the diaspora of Scottish people to America aboard "coffin ships" and the suppression of their culture. Turning to the macabre mood of Halloween, we hear of folkloric and historic cannibals, Sawney Bean & the 15th-century butcher, Christie Cleek. Eileen describes what Samhain is - the time-of-the-year when traditional folk commune with the spirits of their ancestors. When it comes to personal stories from a professional storyteller, Eileen tells three haunting supernatural tales, in the best of which, a spirit saves the life of her grandmother. We wrap it up on rural poacher-lore from catching rabbits in nets to a story about a famous folk hunter who passed up a shot on a stag enchanted by fairies. Less than 5% of a £50 million fund promised to farmers who were hit by last winter's floods, has been paid out. The Farming Recovery Fund was set-up by the previous government to support farmers whose land had been damaged by floodwater during Storm Babet and Storm Henk. But figures revealed by a Freedom of Information request submitted by the Farmers Weekly show that, so far, just £2.1 million of it has been spent.A selective breeding trial on a sheep farm in Shropshire is hoping to reduce methane emissions from the animals by around 35 per cent within 5 years. Lambs taking part in the experiment are put into a metal box with a window - called a Portable Accumulation Chamber - so their emissions can be measured. Animals found to produce lower levels of methane are then selected for breeding programmes - in time reducing the emissions from the flock. The number of Seasonal Workers allowed visas to work in poultry and horticulture next year in England has been confirmed by DEFRA - 43,000 in horticulture and 2,000 for poultry. Although the announcement has been welcomed by the National Farmers Union, it's pressing for a permanent scheme which would run every year. And the Bison introduced into a woodland in Kent as a re-wilding project have had calves. Just over three months ago, Storm Babet caused considerable damage across the East of Scotland. Although Portobello was sheltered from the worst effects of the storm to a certain extent, we still saw large swathes of the beach swept away, groynes left at crooked angles and damage done to the sea wall and Prom. At the time, local Councillor Tim Jones was the nominated spokesman to represent the Council and was shocked by what he saw. Over the past few weeks, officials and others have had time to assess what needs to be done. In this episode, Tim Jones again spoke to David Calder.

The Government has intervened in an increasingly furious row between British Sugar and the National Farmers' Union over the price farmers will be paid for sugar beet next year. The future for fruit and veg growers is bleak, according to a report from the House of Lords Horticulture Committee. It calls on the Government to 'safeguard the sector.' and warns that British growers are being squeezed out by cheaper imports and that horticulture, worth £5 billion a year to the British economy, is underappreciated by policymakers. Agriculture's greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon-dioxide-versus-methane debate. All week we've been looking at the impact of bird flu. It continues to spread across the world, killing both wild birds and farmed poultry. It's been reported in more than 80 countries now. Bio-security on farms is tight, we visit a free-range egg producer to see the lengths poultry keepers are going to, to protect their birds from the virus. It's been a challenging few weeks for farmers with Storm Babet and Storm Ciarán bringing exceptional amounts of rainfall to different parts of the UK. The flooding has washed away newly sown crops, and the soil they were in. Farmers are having to decide whether to replant or not. With volatile weather events happening more regularly, do we need to think differently about how land is managed in flood-prone areas? Presenter = Caz Graham Producer = Rebecca Rooney
All week we're looking at bird flu. We still have outbreaks occurring, although much less frequently than this time last year. But the devastation for farmers whose flocks died, still hurts. Nancy Nicolson has been to speak to Donald MacSween, a crofter on the Isle of Lewis who, for the past decade, has run a commercial flock of hens supplying eggs to shops across the island. But this summer his remaining birds fell victim to the disease. There is growing evidence that getting out into nature can play an important role in improving mental and physical health - according to NHS England. Green social prescribing activities are being offered as an alternative form of treatment as part of a cross government programme, lead by Natural England. One project at Blenheim Estate, is being supported by research from Oxford University. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Our last podcast episode was all about surviving the logistical challenges from Storm Babet. Nothing as biblical as that when we recorded Episode 17 of our 100 Greatest Albums music podcast. However, the recording didn't go as planned.... For this Episode we had reached the Top 20 of the Rolling Stone Magazine Top 100 list - and it did give us a super-eclectic list to get our teeth into. Over 90 minutes we discussed/debated and voted on albums from Radiohead ( second one on list) Kendrick Lamar Bob Dylan ( second one on list) Kayne West ( second one on list) The Clash At least one of these was our panellist John's favourite ever ( double) album which he understandably effused over, and at least one of them wasn't. We also had Lisa explaining, with great care attention and warmth, the concept, story and flow behind To Pimp A Butterfly. Overall, one of our better episodes, if we don't say so ourselves! Therefore, it was with a heavy heart that we found out that the recording had corrupted after approximately 20 mns ( the Zoom recording link failed!) - and other than John taking with passion about how average Kid A is, nothing else survived. So what to do? We didn't have the time, patience or energy to re-record all the lost content. No problem - we reconvened the panel a couple of days later and over 30 mins reviewed all 5 albums again. Lean and mean, all killer no filler - with the added bonus of welcoming back our friend George Paterson to the podcast discussion! We also had another first - when George's son Mike joined us for the Kendrick/Kayne discussions, and of course he totally nailed it ( he loves both albums btw, and quite right too!) And by the wonder of video editing - we have manage to splice together the original 20 mns from part 1 to the follow up discussion on part 2. After all that, we ended up voting yes to three of the albums going onto the final 100 list ( but possibly not the three you might think) , which means we now have 55 albums on our ' final' 100 albums list. Therefore, we are now 'only' looking for 45 more wonderful albums to get us to 100, with just 15 albums from the Rolling Stone list to review. Don't worry, we have a Baldrick-esque cunning plan currently under wraps. As ever, enjoy, and stay safe PS One day, people might talk in hushed tones about the ' lost episode' of Nothing Else Mattress from November 1st 2023 , in the same way that the original tapes from The Beatles only ever live performance on TOTP are revered. ( 16th June 1966 if you're interested). Well, they might...... PPS. On Spotify, we have a Nothing Else Mattress playlist, with a song from every album voted onto the final list on there. 55 songs now - it's a beautiful thing https://open.spotify.com/playlist/29Twz8NUhVl4Ezmy4dMDwZ?si=43b84db9ff6045d9
Mark visits Deeside Willow to hear all about how to grow this versatile plant and its many uses. He also tries his hand at some willow sculpting. The Future Forest Company has transformed a former sheep farm in Ayrshire with the help of some rather interesting pigs. Rachel went to visit the Brodoclea site to hear about the organisation's aims and what role their Mangalica pigs have played. Dr Kat Jones is director of the charity Action to Protect Rural Scotland. For the last few months she's been walking the Glasgow Greenbelt to raise awareness of these often forgotten areas. Mark joined her for a wander along part of the greenbelt near Airdrie. Phil is in Cromarty to see the impact Storm Babet has had on a popular coastal path in the village. He hears how the community council plan to repair and future proof the route. Helen Needham meets Professor Roger Crofts at a climate conference at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. They chat about the much anticipated Agriculture and Rural Communities Bill which is being considered by the Scottish Parliament just now Joining Mark and Dr Kat Jones on their greenbelt walk was Ann Glen who tells Mark a bit about the history of the Monkland Canal and the importance of looking after these areas. And Rachel is in North Berwick where she hears the tragic story of a young artist, Catherine Watson who drowned after rescuing three children from the sea. Her story was almost forgotten until some of her artwork popped up in an unusual place.
It was quite a shock to discover just how much sand had been stripped from Porty Beach after Storm Babet had passed through. The damage done was the main topic of conversation at this week's meeting of Portobello Community Council. There are lots of questions that still have to be answered – exactly how much damage has there been, how will it be fixed, how can we bring back the lost sand and how much will all this cost.
Storm Ciaran has brought major disruption and risk to lives across large parts of the UK. Wind speeds of over 100 miles per hour have battered houses, sent cars into rivers, forced power cuts and school closures. Mark hears about how Atlantic salmon will soon be able to access parts of the River Dee for the first time in a century following the removal of Garlogie Dam. Linda visits the Clyde Valley to hear about how a group of enthusiasts are reviving the orchards that once dominated the area. Rachel heads into the hills of the Inshriach National Nature Reserve in the Cairngorms to hear about a major new study which has recently been published looking at the relationship between controlling deer numbers and woodland restoration. Mark hears about the fascinating history of the oldest beam engine in Scotland that was once responsible for powering Garlogie Mill. Producer Phil goes pumpkin picking in the Highlands to hear about how climate change has affected this year's harvest. We chat live to Vivian Bisset, a National Trust for Scotland Ranger about post-storm clean up and the impact that Storm Babet has had on nature in the North East. Rachel hears all about a Pictish-inspired Millennial stone in Fife. Linda climbs aboard the world's largest seagoing paddle steamer, The Waverley, to hear about how this summer has seen record breaking passenger numbers in its almost 50 years of sailing.
As communities across the UK recover after widespread flooding brought by Storm Babet, the National Farmers Union is calling on the government to set up a comprehensive water strategy for England to improve flood resilience. They want more investment to stop crops on fertile farmland being washed away. Wildlife and conservation groups say the English government's approach to re-introducing native species is 'astonishing' after remarks made by the Environment secretary Thérèse Coffey earlier this week. She told MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee that management plans for species like beavers and eagles, were not a priority for Defra. Farmers and food producers been showing off their produce at "Taste Wales", a big trade fair in Newport. We caught up with Lesley Griffiths, the Minister for Rural Affairs. Farmers across the country say they're concerned by the withdrawal of a product used to control bracken. This year Asulox was not approved for use in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and allowed only under emergency authorisation in England. Government rules mean the herbicide would need additional health and safety testing work to be allowed for future use and the company that makes it has decided not to do that. We speak to an expert on bracken. We visit livestock marts - great and small. Hereford Market is the outskirts of the city and sales have quadrupled since the mart moved to a purpose-built facility 12 years ago. In the Western Isles of Scotland, we visit a livestock mart that only operates a few times a year, but it's a lifeline for crofters. The Green Farm Collective has been named winner of this year's BBC Food and Farming Awards Farming for the Future category. Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney
It's been a truly bizarre week for Dale. A tweet about the recent floods enrages the shock jocks from TalkTV. Even David Icke joins the fray, becoming Dale's latest Twitter troll. Weather expert Thérèse Coffey explains why the UK was unprepared for Storm Babet simply because “the rain came from the east”. How do people like her get into power? We also discuss hydrogen boilers, toxins in reusable cups, and whether voting should be compulsory. Plus, how the UN's been downplaying livestock emissions due to pressure from the farming lobby.

Gloucester secured their first away victory in the Premiership in 364 days, beating Falcons during Storm Babet. We chat through the game, the massive positives and the slight concerns (the last 20 minutes in particular). Talking of last 20 minutes, we also pick the bones out of England's last gasp defeat to South Africa in the World Cup Semi Final. So so close to being a minor miracle performance, unfortunately the squad selection ultimately came back to bite England at the worst time. We also discuss New Zealand hammering Argentina and look forward to the World Cup final this weekend. Ed Price Jim Harley Lawrence Landray (Loz)

As thousands of acres of farm land have been affected by flooding after Storm Babet, the NFU is calling on the government to set up a comprehensive water management strategy to improve flood resilience, and more investment so productive land does not get flooded, washing away crops. The nine and a half thousand acre Rothbury Estate is on the market for £35 million and that means uncertainty for the tenant farmers who farm nearly half the land. It's currently owned by the Duke of Northumberland's youngest son. Local campaigners are concerned, because although around half the land is in the Northumberland National Park and protected, they fear that elsewhere land use could change, and public access could be restricted. All this week we're looking at auction marts and the central role they play in farming communities. Most major centres hold regular sales - often several times a week - but in the Western Isles it's very different. Here, livestock production tends to be small-scale and sales of sheep and cattle only take place on a few days in autumn when stock is ready for market. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the global events of the last couple of weeks. Following the battering of Storm Babet, this week's episode offers a space for us to reflect on a world that can be often violent and far from perfect. Journal entry:13th October, Friday“Battered by the winds of the world I stop to watch the free-flight of rooks Diving from an oak into the full force Of a westerly gale.Gothic wings outspread, They surf the blast Hanging on its back In a rage of ecstatic life.I stand alone below Looking upwards And for a short while My feet have left the ground And I master the gale.”Episode Information:In this episode I read Seán Street's poem ‘Listening with a spider' from his 2021 collection The Sound Recordist published by Maytree Press.I also read an extract from Melanie Challenger's (2023) essay: ‘Animals in the room: Why We Can and Should Listen to Other Species'.I also refer to Thomas Hobbes' (1651) Leviathan, Tennyson's (1850) ‘In Memoriam', and Max Richter's (2003/2018) album The Blue Notebooks. Storm Babet tried it's hardest, however our podcast friends are a hardy bunch! And, after having to re-arrange our recording on two separate occasions, Episode 16 is now available in all its glory! Episode 15 was an all male affair. Episode 16 on the other hand brings together one of our resident panellists Lisa with our special guest, the PR expert, music loving, fanatical gig going, Velvet Underground superfan, Caroline Binnie. As it happened we had the Velvets debut album on our 5 album review list which was handy, as well as albums from The Beatles ( 3rd time) , Carole King, Notorious BIG and Bruce Springsteen ( 2nd time lucky ?!) Caroline and Lisa were on great form, and managed to form an alliance on pretty much every album reviewed ( and some big hitters were given a pretty hard time) Of these, 4 were voted onto our ' final 100 ' list ( although a couple were very borderline) - which means that we have now voted yes to 52/80 albums from the original Rolling Stone list. ( link below if you want a nosey at that list too) Of all the Episodes we have published so far, this one probably has more chat about the actual albums/artists than most of the others, which kind of makes sense for a music podcast! However, Caroline did mention post-recording that the cat that sits on the cover of the Tapestry album is called Telemachus, after the character in Homer's Odyssey! We also ask our guests for an album nomination to add to the final 100 list - and Caroline gave us an absolute corker from 1985 to get our ears around. NB We also found out that Bat Out Of Hell is one of Caroline's Guilty Pleasures! Big thanks to Lisa and especially Caroline for making sure that we actually ended up with a recording we could publish :-) . Top 20 next....
