What if you could reduce your risk of heart disease by 30% without a lot of effort? After all, it is the number 1 killer in the U.S. This episode begins with this simple little tactic – and by the way, it's all in your attitude. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/a-positive-mindset-can-help-your-heart-2019021415999 “Stop overthinking this!” You have either said that to someone or had someone say it to you. Overthinking is that process where you think through an idea or a goal or a career move over and over, imagining every variable and possible outcome. It doesn't help, it just makes you crazy and can really get in the way. So, when does normal thinking become over-thinking? And how do you stop it? Here to discuss this is Jon Acuff. He is author of 9 books including Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution to Overthinking (https://amzn.to/3f2FI9o). Several prominent thinkers and scientists have predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) could be dangerous. One fear is that we might create machines that are so smart and so sophisticated they could control us, instead of us controlling them. Could that be or is it just science-fiction? Might we one day create machines that think on their own? Probably not, according to Gerd Gigerenzer Director Emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the award-winning author of several books including, How to Stay Smart In A Smart World (https://amzn.to/3SnGADW). He also reveals how AI can change our behavior and how that is already happening. Fall allergies are a real problem for many of us. If they bother you. listen as I reveal some simple things that will help minimize the symptoms by keeping allergens out of your house. https://www.webmd.com/allergies/allergy-proof-your-environment Learn more about your ad choices. Jon Acuff is paving the way. He's paving the way for his daughters as he just co-wrote a book with them (!) and he's paving the way for us with practical, relatable information that makes our lives better. In 2021, Jon wrote Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution to Overthinking and he has this way of doling out information that sticks. It slides into your brain and rolls around in there and connects with your other thoughts and helps you make more heartfelt choices. It was an honor and a hoot to get a chance to talk with Jon about parenting topics like helping kids learn their "turn down" techniques for when life has gone haywire, like giving kids time to practice skills during childhood so that they feel prepared for adulthood, like being purposeful and present with today's relationships. We also talk about legos. And queso. And skittles and failure. Jon's daughters, L.E. and McRae wrote a sequel to Soundtracks that's geared for teens called "Your New Playlist" and Jon was their editor. As a New York Times Bestselling Author and INC Top 100 Leadership Speaker, Jon packs it the good stuff while being entertaining, witty, and memorable through and through. The space between our ears is a battlefield, and a lot of our struggles come down to what we're telling ourselves, the soundtrack that's playing inside our heads. Whether it has merit or not, our inner voice doesn't always speak in the kindest of terms, and it can have severe effects if it goes unchecked. How do we develop a healthier relationship with this inner critic and get out of the downward spiral of thinking? In “Soundtracks”, Jon Acuff provides steps we can take to examine how we talk to ourselves and deal with it. In today's episode, coach, team leader and President of Business by Referrals LLC, Garrett Maroon shares why this book has been so life-changing for him. Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode How to nip overthinking in the bud We don't have to give into our inner soundtrack, believe it or agree with it all the time. Our inner voice is just our brain's problem solving, meaning-making mechanism, and its interpretation of events can be heavily biased. One of the biggest mistakes we make is assuming that all of our thoughts are true, instead of distancing ourselves from them and calling them out. The most freeing thing about our inner soundtracks The fact that there's a soundtrack running, and the fact that the soundtrack tends to be a little negative doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you. We just need to build in the necessary mechanisms to combat this soundtrack. Why thinking in absolutes creates more suffering A broken soundtrack tends to catastrophize and overexaggerate every experience, and blow even a small thing out of proportion. What we tell ourselves has the power to completely derail us, even when it shouldn't. There's no such thing as a perfect day where you encounter no obstacles. We can either label it as a bad day or just accept it as a normal part of life. Guest Bio Garrett Maroon is a team leader, coach and the President of Business by Referrals LLC. Having experienced stress, burnout, and struggle himself, Garrett is passionate about helping agents build their businesses based on relationships, so they can earn more while working less. In this episode of Start With A Win, Adam welcomes bestselling author and motivational speaker Jon Acuff. Adam and Jon dive into the topic of overthinking and how it can cripple us in so many areas of our lives. According to Jon, overthinking is when what you think gets in the way of what you want. Overthinking is the sneakiest form of fear that keeps us from achieving our goals, taking on new opportunities, or just getting through that tough meeting at work. That overthinking writes soundtracks in our minds—those repetitive thoughts that weigh us down.Jon breaks down his proven plan to change overthinking from a super problem into a superpower through The 3 Rs: Retire broken soundtracks, Replace them with new soundtracks, Repeat those new soundtracks.Jon is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books—his latest, Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution to Overthinking, released April 2021 and is already a bestseller. He's an INC Magazine Top 100 Leadership speaker and has spoken to hundreds of thousands of people at conferences and companies around the world including FedEx, Nissan, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Chick-fil-A, Nokia and Comedy Central. Overthinking isn’t a personality trait. It’s a fear that steals time and creativity. When New York Times bestselling author Jon Acuff changed his life by transforming his overthinking, he wondered if other people might benefit from what he discovered. He commissioned a research study to ask 10,000 people if they struggle with overthinking too, and 99.5 percent said, "Yes!" (And that was before 2020, a year where everyone in the world had plenty to overthink.) In his highly-anticipated new book, Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution To Overthinking, Jon shares how to tweak the soundtracks in your head to make overthinking propel you forward. Jon joins the Calibrate Real Estate Podcast this week to share how he turned overthinking from a super problem to a superpower. From single mom at age 16 – living in subsidized housing with a daughter in subsidized daycare – to multi-millionaire Real Estate Entrepreneur, Edna created a proven process to use other people’s money to invest. She joins the Calibrate Real Estate Podcast this week to talk about how to get started investing in real estate even if you don’t have any money of your own. Her biggest secret: it’s all about mindset. EP #173: Doors Open When You Knock Originally from Southern California, Steven Ross began selling real estate there in 2005, and after moving to Colorado in 2009, he built another real estate practice from scratch. Steven says that he was the “worst type of person to be a real estate agent” because: He’s an introvert. He doesn’t work nights or weekends. You can’t find him online (at least up through 2020). He doesn’t do parties or events. In fact, he’s completely antisocial. Yet he built a successful real estate business twice by doing one thing and one thing only: knocking on doors—over 125,000 of them. In addition to selling real estate, Steven has spent the last 20 years studying and helping people move forward in the areas of life that are important to them. EP #172: How Are Property Taxes Calculated? The Denver Apartment market is at an all-time high. Unfortunately, that means the tax assessments that are mailed to owners on May 1st will also be at all-time highs. We want our clients to be prepared, informed, and proactive. We invited Denver County’s Assessor, Keith Erffmeyer, to join the podcast this week to discuss how residential real property is valued and best practices for protesting your valuation. Crown Council Mentor of the Month | Helping Dental Teams Build a Culture of Success
The Crown Council was first introduced to Jon Acuff by Crown Council member Dr. Dennis Wells who takes care of Jon’s oral health. At the Annual Event in Nashville in 2015 where he presented to us about his book “Do Over.” Then 3 years later he returned to the Annual Event stage to share his presentation about his next book “Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done”. That is a rare feet - getting on the stage of the Annual Event twice put you into a pretty elite club. Now, we are on to Jon’s new book “Soundtracks” The Surprising Solution to Overthinking” It’s already a New York Times Bestseller (after two weeks) which is an amazing accomplishment considering Jon hasn’t been doing live events because of the Corona Virus. Jon is also a New York Time best selling author of 6 other books and if you follow Jon on Social Media you will find an inspiring blend of humor, honesty and hope. And he is killing it in the social world with 300,000 Twitter followers, 187,000 Facebook followers and 125,000 Instagram Followers. Jon loves Snowbird and skiing which connects us in a very special way. Steve and I grew up shredding on the hills of Snowbird in Utah. I also learned listening to the audio version of Soundtracks that he wears his Snowbird t-shirt almost daily. Kudos. But...and this the end of the introduction as an FYI at the last Annual Event in Nashville (2020) we hosted and planned the “Gift of Music” benefit concert at the historic Ryman Auditorium. This is a concert that host in conjunction with our Annual Event whenever we go to Nashville and he not only shared the stage with Dolly Parton but introduced and opened for her - dream come true status unlocked! Jon has his own podcast called “All It Takes Is a Goal” that teaches many of the principles we will talk about today, but one thing that will make today special is our own special application of the “Soundtrack” principles to a dental office. We are hoping to help you make sure your dental practice’s culture, which is a collection of agreed upon soundtracks, is setting you up for success.
There's an old bumper sticker quote that goes, “Don't believe everything you think.” But we've all done it. It starts as a tiny idea or worry that we push to the back burner. Then slowly over time, it grows and grows until we eventually act on it or let it dictate our decisions. Changing our mindset is a choice, but it's easy to forget that we are in the driver's seat when it comes to our thoughts. That's why I asked my good friend Jon Acuff to join me on the show today. Jon is whip-smart, funny and a New York Times bestselling author, but more than that, he's on a mission to help others flip the script on overthinking and turn it into a superpower. Throughout our conversation, he shares what he's learned throughout his research on overthinking and talks about the tools we need to master our thoughts. I loved this conversation, and I just know you'll love his unique blend of humor, honesty and hope. Stick around to the end to hear all about: 1. What Dolly Parton has in common with telegrams and bald eagles 2. The four simple words you can use to make any goal easier 3. How words can easily control of our thoughts, feelings and emotions 4. The most surprising discovery Jon learned from his research for his new book Soundtracks Favorite quotes: I think everyone tends to undervalue the things they're good at and overvalue the things other people are good at.2. At some point, everybody has to live out the thing they are good at and enjoy being good at that.3. The soundtracks we listen to have a lot more power than we think. They're playing constantly and what if we can do something about that? What if we can choose the soundtrack we listen to? 4. Repeating things that are positive about yourself puts them at the top of your playlist. So when you're in a situation where something happens, it's like your brain grabs the most recent song. In this episode I answer this question: 1. How do you decide when to invest in your business? (52:28) Links to great things we discussed: 1. Jon Acuff Website 2.
