Summer in a college town, stolen TCBY signs, selling popcorn to John Cougar Mellencamp, and meeting one of your best friends in Sociology class after you've spent the night in jail. That's Jim Granato, our first guest. Jim grew up in Unionville, a little town right to the east of Bloomington. He and Josh became fast friends during high school, which is also when Jim found himself at home behind the camera. Jim is now a freelance filmmaker in San Francisco. His films and documentaries have appeared on PBS, including A Day with My Boy: Slug War and D-Tour, a documentary that follows professional drummer and Bloomington native, Pat Spurgeon, as he does daily dialysis and searches for a new kidney while on tour with rock band Rogue Wave. Spurgeon's story is deeply intertwined with those of several other Bloomingtonians. More about Jim: Jim Granato is a self-taught, award-winning filmmaker based in Oakland, California. Born in Chicago, Jim moved to the Bloomington area with his family when he was 5 years old (1978) and his earliest memories there are seeing the movie trucks and lights that were set around town when BREAKING AWAY (released 1979) was being filmed. He grew up fascinated with movies ever since, making up scenarios with childhood friends creating movie drawings and shooting polaroids and occasional super 8 before video cameras were available. In 1991, he started making short films on VHS with a dedicated group of friends that included trick or treaters getting run over, killer puppets, nude serial killers with plenty of the era's local underground music scene sprinkled in between. Jim left Bloomington in 1994. Since 1996, he has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and has directed and produced several short films and music videos. His shorts, A Day With My Boy: Slug War (2014), was licensed by PBS and premiered as part of their series PBS Indies, and Angels (2013) was nominated for a Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. He has made music videos for Sonny & The Sunsets, Rogue Wave, Ramon & Jessica, Pancho-San and The Bobbyteens. D TOUR (2009), which partially takes place in Bloomington, is his first feature film as director and producer. D TOUR won several awards including the Golden Gate Award for Bay Area Feature Documentary from the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Jury Prize for Best Documentary from the Bend Film Festival. D TOUR premiered nationwide on the PBS Emmy award-winning program Independent Lens in November 2009. He is currently working on a second feature film project with underground "budget rock" legends, The Mummies, and has plans to write and direct a feature length project based on growing up in Bloomington. Blair celebrates renewed health and “friend”ship in Mexico, divorced women do not like labels and Kalene isn't sure if every guy she's dated isn't a sociopath. The girls discuss their relationship needs and the various forms of loss, how to cope, how to show up for others and yourself. Blair has a vested interest in TCBY and is a self-proclaimed ‘eccentric.' Kalene circles around the sun one more time.
Here's a question you've never thought you'd be asked: How much TCBY is too much for a man who murdered his wife? The answer might surprise you. Chris decides he's the gayest of the three. Antonio lives in the land of fast food. And Jarrod is against the evolution of grocery-store shopping.

Aside from art, Conner is also passionate about TCBY, a popular frozen yogurt chain. He feels that TCBY has been a staple in the Rochester community for many years, and enjoys their wide selection of flavors. On the KINGS OF PUNK podcast, he will be talking about why TCBY has been such an important part of his life growing up in Rochester. As Conner talked about his passion for AI art and how it had revolutionized the creative process, the co-hosts couldn't help but share in his enthusiasm. While they still held onto their usual skepticism and cynicism, they could see the potential that AI art brings to the creative world. They all agreed that AI art is a fascinating concept and that it may open up even more possibilities for budding creatives. Conner Lynd and the co-hosts of the Kings of Punk Podcast were thrilled to have the opportunity to discuss the YouTuber Food Dip in their latest episode. The co-hosts agreed that they find Food Dip to be a great example of the type of content Joe Rogan has helped to popularize - a unique blend of comedy, discussion, and information about food. They also pointed out that Food Dip does an excellent job at utilizing a wide variety of mediums, such as vlogs, podcasts, and even social media campaigns, to keep their audience engaged. The co-hosts were especially impressed by how Food Dip is able to take complex topics related to food and make them accessible for people of all ages and levels of knowledge. All in all, Conner and the co-hosts feel that Food Dip is one of the top examples of Joe Rogan's impact on content creation.
On today's episode we will talk about the connections we make through food. I'll talk about some of the foods that remind me of my own childhood. Anyone else remember Sanka or Coke Milk? I'll also talk about my evolution as a cook (I now know the difference between a clove and a bulb of garlic). And I'm VERY excited to have my friend Vanessa David here for an interview! Vanessa and I will talk about "food for nourishment and food for love ," (a phrase Vanessa has coined). Vanessa will share how growing up with immigrant parents from different countries shaped her eating and how she has worked with children to help them expand their pallets. Here's a little information on Vanessa David: Vanessa spent over twenty years pursuing a theatre career, which meant she also had a food service career whether she liked it or not. As an actress she worked in Connecticut, New York and Kentucky. Also a playwright, her plays have been published and performed across the country. She worked behind the counter at TCBY and Subway, made cakes at Baskin Robbins and a local bakery, and eventually typecast herself as a server at California Pizza Kitchen. She spent seven years with the Darien School Lunch Program in Connecticut, working her way up from cashier to elementary manager. When that came to an end she wrote her memoir The Lunch Teacher. She is currently searching for an agent and/or publisher. Follow @thelunchteacher on Instagram for updates. If you like this episode please subscribe! And help me out by leaving a review below. Tonight I cover Part 2 of the Yogurt Shop Murders. In December, 1991, 4 teenage girls are murdered in the TCBY yogurt shop. 30 years later, this case is still unsolved. Tonight I discuss suspects, confessions, and motive. Tonight I am sipping on Albarino. Albarino is their best selling white wine at Edge of the Lake Vineyard. This wine is bursting with zest of citrus, and gives off a combination of grapefruit and honeydew to the nose. This is their driest white wine and the boldest. The uniqueness of the Albarino grape allows it to pair well with melon, apples and soft cheeses. This wine was awarded the Best in Class Texas White in the Texas International Wine Competition. Happy New Year to all of you and thank you for supporting our show! We are rolling into 2022 feeling blessed and grateful. Cheers to good vibes and love this year. Outdo Each Other in Showing HonorIf you've ever sent a "Thank You" card for someone's "Thank You" card, this episode's for you! What does slingin' lattes at Starbucks or scoopin' ice cream at TCBY teach us about serving others? We're wrapping up our conversation of servanthood — a mark of the Master we're working on this year — with a discussion about showing honor to others. Jesus wasn't honored in his hometown, but how can we avoid treating those closest to us disrespectfully? We rejoice to know that he's restoring dignity to the disgraced. And we find a strange boy-meets-girl story where a Moabitess named Ruth sleeps at Boaz's feet while she shows honor to her mother-in-law. Plus, we're covering five Through the Week challenges. Connect with me through your favorite platform: https://pods.link/aardvarkgirlBecause this episode is publishing the week of Christmas, I figured I should do something festive.Just kidding. If you know me, you know I’m not a Christmas person at all. I wouldn’t say I’m a grinch, because I would never deny others their joy in the holiday. I’m not an outward humbug either. My grumpiness during the season is more internal. It starts with the first time I’m forced to hear Christmas music. Yeah. I’m guessing it doesn’t surprise you that I’m one of “those” people who does not get “into the Christmas spirit,” whatever that really is. Every time I walk into a store between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, I cringe and do my best to conjure up some superhuman noise blocking rays to my brain so I don’t have to hear it. But there’s no escaping it. It’s everywhere.I think I was traumatized as a teenager when I worked at TCBY. During the holidays, we had to play Christmas music all day. The radio station played Mariah Carey at least once an hour, often twice. I worked 10-hour shifts. Hearing Mariah Carey Christmas songs 10-20 times a day is not good for anyone’s mental health. Although I know many of you love it and don’t agree, I stand by my view. Luckily I convinced the store owner to let me find my own Christmas music to play. I could handle the older albums from the Rat Pack, Elvis, and BB King. Some local Vegas artists had put out a compilation disc of rock-based covers. I made it work.Because that’s what you have to do when you’re in a situation you don’t necessarily want to be in but can’t avoid. You make it work. It’s the same in business. Sometimes you’re stuck with a client or coworker you don’t particularly care for. Sometimes you might love most of a job, but there’s one element of it you could do without. It’s not worth turning it down, so you find a way to get over it and get it done anyway. As much as we’d like to have everything exactly as we like it all the time, it’s just not realistic.Even as a business owner, you don’t get to control everything. If you don’t like a client, you can fire them, but you have to consider doing it in a tactful way, which is not in the middle of a project. Give them notice, fulfill your obligations, and THEN walk away. But you have to stay professional until it’s over. Well, I guess you don’t have to, but you should be prepared for the consequences if you don’t.Sometimes you might love your client, but not another person on their team. You can’t do much about that either. You do your best to keep a positive working relationship with that person and do what you need to do. If you find that it’s impossible to do that, you can part ways. It’s a matter of deciding which you want more – to keep working with that client despite the annoying interactions, or if you need to let it go to save your sanity. If that client relationship is more important to you, you find a way to make it work with the other person. Try different communication styles or other ways to improve the working environment. Sometimes you have to do some work to make it work.Other times you might land a project that’s right in your wheelhouse but includes one aspect you really don’t enjoy. What do you do? You have to consider if it’s worth doing that one thing or if you truly hate that one thing and know it’ll ruin the whole experience. If you can make it work, you might end up with a great client. Of course, then you might get stuck with a someone who always wants you to do something you hate. But once you’ve built that relationship, it’s easier to convince them that it’s best to let someone else handle that part. This happened to me recently. I decided a while back that I wouldn’t take any location job. In production, that means finding locations for filming, scouting them to make sure there aren’t any potential issues, and getting all of the permits and other paperwork in order. I don’t mind that last part at all, but finding and scouting isn’t for me. I don’t enjoy driving around and trying to determine if a place has the right look and structure and all the other details that go into it. It’s something I’ve done, but it’s not my expertise. There are people who specifically do this and love it, so I prefer to let them do it.For the last several months, however, I’ve been working on a show where locations are needed, and I’m the only local on the crew. It has been particularly challenging because of COVID. Places are closed or have limited staff, and many don’t want to deal with a film crew unless there’s a giant budget or they’re renting out the whole place for months. I’ve never heard or had to repeat “no” so many times, and I don’t like it. I always find a solution, but there are forces completely out of my control here and I’ve had to say “we don’t have that” or “no one will allow us to do that,” and that’s never what I want to say. I want people to keep coming to Vegas for their productions, but it’s not always as simple as they want it to be. Especially when it comes to shooting inside casinos, and this was pre-pandemic. It takes a lot of time and planning to get the right access, and even then, they don’t always approve.I actually did convince them it would be better to hire a location manager, but unfortunately even that person wasn’t able to find what we needed. I suppose that made me feel a little better, that at least it wasn’t just me who couldn’t do it, but at the same time, I want them to have everything they want to make sure this season is a success. I know it’s out of my control, though, and I’m doing the best I can.The point is, when this opportunity came my way, it seemed silly to turn it down based on one element of the job. Sure, it comes with some headaches, but it’s such a small part of it. Beyond that, I’ve gotten to spend half the year working with some great people. And I’ve added some pretty entertaining production stories to my arsenal, which is always a good thing. I haven’t loved the location part, and it definitely reminded me why I don’t take those specific jobs, but I’ve made it work. Because that’s what I have to do. Just like the other people on the show – they might not be getting everything they hoped for in Vegas, but they’re making it work.Another way of making it work is what I talk about often – focusing on the positive. I suppose that’s the closest I can come to being festive. Yes, 2020 has been a weird year and we all know about the bad things that have been happening. But, there is always something good. Being trapped at home means I’m not exposed to that awful Christmas music all month. It means I haven’t had to drive much at all this year, which I appreciate because I don’t really like to drive. I only spent $47 on gas this entire year, and that was all before March. So that’s pretty cool. I’ve had lots of time to appreciate how cute and funny my cats are. There are so many little things to be grateful for every day. You just have to look for them. So when the things you don’t want to have to do come barreling into your life, find something good and make it work.COVID may have canceled all of my hobbies – concerts, travel, and pilates. But it also gave me time to learn a lot of new things and figure out something else I love doing – this podcast. It took away all of the jobs I had lined up, but it gave me new ones that kept me busy while allowing me to stay home and be safe. All things considered, I can’t really complain. I made it work. Because that’s what I do, and I hope it’s what you do, too.Happy Holidays! I can barely say that without cringing, but there it is!

About two years ago, I was on staff at a church as a worship pastor. My career took a bit of the turn, and I found myself traveling and speaking and writing a book. Eventually, I had to step down from the position at the church, and it killed me. My new career was exciting, but I realized that I was having trouble keeping up with everything, because I wasn't organized. About eight months ago, my husband the Attorney General left his job to come on board and help manage me. He realized he couldn't keep me on track or else he would've done it years ago. We realized, we had to find a person that was so organized that they could keep me in line without being too organized and causing me to run away. We found the amazing Erin Cuccio to hire as my Executive Assistant. Today, you get to meet the wonderful Erin. You can find Erin here: Beauty for Ashes Erin Cuccio on LinkedIn Show Notes [04:11] Erin is excited to be here. [04:52] How podcasts should be in the 30 to 40 minute range, and you can't talk about yourself all the time. [05:20] How Melissa loves having an assistant and it makes her feel so proud. [05:35] How Melissa and Erin connected. Erin's husband started a business in Lufkin. They were looking for a church and found Melissa's church. Erin thought Melissa was hilarious and started following her. [06:41] A few months later, The Red Ribbon Week video came out and Erin's friends were sharing the video. [07:06] Eventually, Erin went through Melissa's online bible study course This Sucks but God Is Good. [07:17] At the end of the course, Erin and David did a live video saying that they wanted to hire an assistant. [08:00] Melissa made a Mother's Day phone call to women who were experiencing some form of loss. When Melissa called, Erin was able to share some of her story and how she followed Melissa in the first place. [09:09] Melissa remembered Erin from the call when Erin decided to apply for the assistant position. [09:44] Melissa and Erin's personalities are very different, but they do get along. Working with Melissa has been a growing experience for Erin. [10:28] Erin said If she was young and single, she would've moved to Nashville and worked in PR and booking for a celebrity. She thinks it's amazing that God has opened that door for her in Lufkin, Texas. [10:55] Erin wasn't nervous about the podcast at all. She used to work in radio. She was a worship pastor. She worked in flower arrangements and a t-shirt company. She is a Renaissance woman. [12:19] Erin has always been independent and ambitious. She started working when she was 16. She worked for TCBY, she was a DJ for a Christian radio station, worked at a Christian bookstore, worked for an electrical contractor, worked in medical records, a real estate agent, a teacher, she ran a home-based flower and t-shirt business, she led worship, and now she works for Melissa. [13:32] This is been one of the first times in Erin's life that she has been able to do one thing. [13:52] Erin doesn't consider herself flighty, she just has somewhat of a gypsy soul. [14:19] Erin is so solid and grounded, she is really well-suited to bring Melissa back down to reality. [15:01] Melissa doesn't do one-on-one really well. Just the thought of it makes her really nervous. Traveling with Erin is really easy. [16:39] After Melissa speaks, Erin brings her chocolate and a Coke. [17:57] How David is very thorough. [18:32] We have a big event coming up May 4th and 5th 2018. It is right here in Lufkin, Texas. The Social Event of the season. It's a Friday night and most of Saturday. [19:29] Women tend to be nurturers by nature. It's important to remind women that they need to nurture themselves. They need time to refresh and refuel. [20:02] Melissa has so much to offer in her message, so to give women a weekend is a wonderful gift and a way to just hang out and talk about things that are important. [20:52] This is the first annual social event of the season. This is a social event for the churched and the unchurched the hopeful and the hopeless. [22:07] This weekend gives you a place to sit at the table. This weekend is going to have value and give women something that will refresh their hearts. There will be fun and laughter and also learning and growing and connecting with other women. [24:44] Dress comfortable, prepare to have a good time, and if you come alone you won't be leaving alone. [25:17] We love community. Erin and I also have one terrible horrible thing in common and that is that we have both lost a child. When you walk through something like this, you better have community. [27:05] How having an online community and bible study has helped teach Erin that it is so important to have a community backing you up. [27:46] Community is the secret to growing and living your best life. [28:48] At women's core, they want to belong. [29:16] This year's theme is called Live Known. It's so easy for us to hide behind things. Become what you truly are by living known. Women want to be seen. [31:09] How identity is a huge crisis that we all struggle with. [32:57] We are going to do heart work and ask ourselves tough questions and answer them. [33:32] There is a sense of empowerment in knowing who you really are. [34:35] We need to stop pushing our desires and passions down. God gave us potential for a reason and Melissa wants to help women find that potential. [37:53] Erin's lightning round questions. [40:12] Erin is one of God's most shockingly we never saw it coming gifts to Melissa and David. Just meeting Erin alone would make going to the event worthwhile. [41:38] How women push themselves down, because they always want other people to feel important. Women need to keep in mind how they feel. Thanks for joining us on Ordinary People Ordinary Things. Mindful Mondays-#422 February 26th The Strong Within Daily Affirmation Podcast My Disappointments Guide Me To Better Decisions We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment. Jim Rohn I remember watching a comedy called Meet The Millers With Jennifer Anniston and Jason Sudeikis. It's a silly premise where the main character creates a fake family to smuggle in a shipment from Mexico because he got involved with the wrong people and needs to correct his mistake. And the funniest part of the movie for me is when the fake daughter is hanging out with a tattooed boy who doesn't seem too bright. Jason who plays the fake father says to the young man sarcastically “hey those are some cool tatts man” and the young gentleman says “thank you bro” as he looks them over with pride and then the boy points to his arm quite beamingly and says “you see the cobra?” And then Jason says “what's that one?” as he points to the boy's neck. And the boy opens up his shirt, so you can see the tattoo better and he says, “that's my ‘creedo.' No REGRETS…” but he doesn't realize it's spelled wrong as it's spelled R A G R E T S.” And Jason says back to the young man, “you have no regrets?” and the boy responds “nope.” Then Jason says “not even a single letter?” and the boy responds again “no way, not me.” And Jason finishes off the scene even more sarcastically saying to his fake daughter “I love him, he's a real winner Casey.” I'll include the clip in my blog post on my site. Every mistake, every disappointment, and every moment that we wished we could get back…they weren't errors in our lives. They were chances for us to come to a higher awareness. I know it's easier said than done to have no regrets, and I'm not saying we shouldn't ever regret anything, but maybe we should look differently at regrets. I love acronyms because they help me remember lessons better. I'll give some famous acronym examples to help you get on my excitement for acronym bandwagon. You remember the frozen yogurt stores TCBY? Well, TCBY stands for The Country's Best Yogurt. In fact, it used to stand for This Can't Be Yogurt until they were sued by the company I Can't Believe It's Yogurt. Or another one you might not know is the word TASER, you know for the TASER gun, well that stands for Thomas A. Swift's Electrical Rifle. We could go on for days about acronyms we didn't know about, but let's get into my acronym to remember how to reframe looking at regrets. The guilt we feel about something we wish we didn't do will keep us from living our best lives in the present moment. So let's reframe REGRET to help you heal from your past pains and begin living more within peace and joy for your life. REGRET stands for Realizing Every Goodbye Resolves Eventually over Time. Now I used the word “over” in front of time, so I hope you can forgive me for putting in the connecting word to help the phrase make more sense. What I want to remind you and myself of when we say this acronym, is that all those bad things we've been holding onto…we're saying goodbye to them. All those things that we're upset about, all those pains that are hurting us in the moment and all the guilts we may feel will resolve themselves out over time. And it's not because we never think about our mistakes ever again, almost certainly to repeat them since we didn't learn. But it's that we've become more aware by saying the REGRET acronym when we are feeling regret. We say the acronym to awaken us to better ways of healing and learning from our mistakes. The human will is a formidable force and when we keep moving forward knowing that every mistake is a lesson, and that every regret isn't a goodbye to something bad, but a hello to something beautiful over time. Then we are eternally growing. So think about it like this, you realize that your disappointments have guided you to better decisions…well hopefully. Some people choose never to learn, but we may have to go through disappointment after disappointment to finally engrain in our brain that this way isn't working. And the more in tune we become with our intuition, then the more we will hear those little voices in our head, and those subtle cues in our body, warning us something isn't right. I was working with a life coaching student of mine, and at the end of our session I asked what we wanted to focus on for the next week, and she said…”I want to pay more attention to those little voices in my head that are telling me what I need to do at the moment.” She was burned out in her life and those voices would tell her what her mind and body needed. It was saying “take a nap, you haven't eaten yet; you need to get something in your stomach,” or it might say “if you only spend a few minutes on organizing you won't be so overwhelmed.” She said that those small voices were the ones that when she listened to them, they always brought her to a place of balance. It was the good voice within telling her what she needed. And we do that a lot in our lives, we drown out that intuiton, and we listen to the more destructive voice inside. Or we drown out all the voices and just do whatever we feel NEEDS to be done by forcing things because we have so much left to do. So we try to cram it all in, and as fast as we can into one day. Maybe if we listened a little more to our intuition guiding us…we might have less regrets. But if we can remember that a regret is Realizing Every Goodbye Resolves Eventually over Time, it will be a pathway to opens doors. They say that for every door that closes in your life another will open. And it's a nice sentiment to say, but when you are in the thick of things it can be easy to let anxiety grip you. And I could wave my magic wand and tell you I have the answer for everyone, but that would be a lie. I think it comes down to a multitude of things, but maybe it's about finding something to place your attention on when going through hell. Maybe it's the smile of a loved one, or the remembrance of a good conversation with a great friend, or maybe it's the calm knowing that your creator has something more in store for you. Maybe it's a past triumph and you remember how great your body felt after that success. So let us find a higher truth and know that the mistakes in your life weren't meant to destroy, but to build you up and bring something better to you. I may not be able to look into a crystal ball to tell your fortune, but I think I can tell you your future right now. You have a great one ahead of you. There will bumps and bruises, but each one will be worth it as you get to know the amazing you. So when going through your personal hells, remember to say the acronym REGRET out loud or in your mind, and focus on a past success or something you love. Because when it feels like that's all you can hold onto…I think it will be enough. And if you are going to regret anything, regret being regretful…ok that was stupid. Next. Today's Personal Commitment: Practice saying the acronym REGRET to yourself and see how it sounds. Maybe you might have a better acronym for going through a tough time in your life. SO see if you can create an acronym that will help you remember a better way. And if you create a cool one I'd love to hear it and share it with the Strong Within One Percenters crew…that's that I call you guys, my audience, if you didn't know that.
