Not only were VAN HALEN effectively “the Black Sabbath of shred” but they ultimately paved the way for the L.A. hair metal shred scene that exploded during the 80's. Not only is this episode an ALBUM DIVE into the first VAN HALEN album (by none other than the mighty VAN HALEN), but If you're into “reading books with your ears” then check out the audiobook “Van Halen Rising” as it provides some interesting insights into the origin story of the legendary band, including their rise to power, their earliest musical influences, and how Edward Van Halen's signature brand of two-handed tapping virtuosity forever revolutionized guitar playing in the late 70's and beyond. Remember, it's never too early for ice cream, even if it's “warm” and comes out of a “one eyed banana”. Go ahead and trim up that “Greek mythology bush”, get ready for the “super mix” and discover the sound of magic that was a game changer in the world of heavy metal when you JOIN US as we dive into the self-titled, debut album from the best backyard party band to come out of Pasadena: VAN HALEN. 1970 was a year of change in pop and rock music, with divisions between both becoming ever more blurred. More ambitiously constructed epics, heavy rock numbers and contemporary folk songs competed with the mainstream and easy listening fare on Top of the Pops and in the Top 30 singles, while progressive and jazz-rock took their first bows in the album charts. There were live albums, notably from The Rolling Stones and The Who, made partly to combat the market in bootleg recordings. Meanwhile, several singer-songwriters like James Taylor found major acceptance and the death of Jimi Hendrix was widely mourned. The likes of Van Morrison, Elton John, Deep Purple, and Lindisfarne achieved their initial successes. Groups such as Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull consolidated early success while developing in new directions.By the end of the year, many a critic and music fan could look back on a twelve-month period in which their landscape had altered almost beyond recognition. This is the story of 1970 and the twenty-five key rock albums that helped define it.John Van der Kiste has published over seventy books, mostly historical biography and music, including titles on The Beatles, Jeff Lynne/ELO, Led Zeppelin, Lindisfarne and Steve Winwood. He has also reviewed books and records for the local and national press and fanzines and co-founded and edited the 70s fanzine Keep on Rockin'. He has performed with groups, run mobile discos, and written booklet notes for CD reissues from EMI and other labels. An occasional musician and songwriter, he also co-wrote one track on Riff Regan's Milestones (2015) and played harmonica on London's The Hell for Leather Mob (2020). It all started in London. More than fifty years ago, a generation of teens created something that would change the face of music forever.London, Reign Over Me immerses us in the backroom clubs, basement record shops, and late-night faint radio signals of 1960s Britain, where young hopefuls like Peter Frampton, Dave Davies, and Mick Jagger built off American blues and jazz to form a whole new sound. Author Stephen Tow weaves together original interviews with over ninety musicians and movers-and-shakers of the time to uncover the uniquely British story of classic rock's birth.Capturing the stark contrast of bursting artistic energy with the blitzkrieg landscape leftover from World War II, London, Reign Over Me reveals why classic rock ‘n' roll could only have been born in London. A new sound from a new generation, this music helped spark the most important cultural transformation of the twentieth century.Tow features interviews with a long list of artists including:•Jon Anderson, Rick Wakement & Steve Howe of (Yes)•Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)•Rod Argent (The Zombies)•Dave Davies (The Kinks)•Spencer Davis (Spencer Davis Group)•Peter Frampton (Humble Pie, solo artist)•Roger Glover (Deep Purple)•Kenney Jones (The Small Faces; The Who)•Greg Lake (King Crimson; Emerson, Lake & Palmer)•Manfred Mann (Manfred Mann)•Dave Mason (Traffic)•John Mayall (The Bluesbreakers)•Ian McLagan of (The Small Faces)•Carl Palmer (Atomic Rooster; Emerson, Lake & Palmer)•Paul Rodgers (Free & Bad Company)Among many, many more...Stephen Tow teaches history at Delaware Valley University, specializing in rock n roll and twentieth-century America. Harold Bronson is as much of a rock ’n’ roll music fan as he is a music industry trailblazer. As a UCLA college music journalist, Harold flew to London to meet and interview his idols, and later wrote the book, "My British Invasion- The Inside Story on the Yardbirds, the Dave Clark Five, Manford Mann, Herman's Hermits, The Hollies, The Troggs, The Kinks, The Zombies, and More.” Harold shares little known, behind the scenes stories about his encounters with these music legends when they were still in their prime. He explains why he thinks the The Kinks stopped touring and why members of the Ramones didn’t speak to each other for years during their heyday. Harold co-founded Rhino Records with Richard Foos, which became the standard for novelty and reissue records and the first label to produce CD Box sets in America, beginning with Richie Valens. He signed The Knack and executive produced their ‘Zoom’ album. Rhino also produce several Firesign Theatre records. Harold grew up in Westchester, CA, (next to LAX airport) with some neighborhood kids who became the hit band, the Turtles. As film producer, Harold worked with Hunter Thompson to make “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, starring Johnny Depp. And he’s got Hunter Thompson stories to prove it! Join Phil and Ted for fascinating, rock ’n' roll stories from the 1960s and 70s.

Ray Davies was the lead singer, chief songwriter, and rhythm guitarist in the Kinks, one of the most long-lived of the British Invasion rock groups of the 1960s. In effect, the Kinks had always been merely a backup group for Davies, who wrote and sang nearly all their songs with only the occasional contribution from his brother Dave, who played lead guitar in the group. At various times, Ray Davies made noises about dissolving the group and going solo, but for years the closest he came to it was taking solo credit for the soundtrack to his 1985 film, Return to Waterloo (which he wrote and directed), even though the music sounds as much like the Kinks as that on any regular Kinks record.During the '90s, however, the Kinks gradually became inactive and Davies pursued other projects, starting with his semi-fictional 1995 memoir, X-Ray. He supported the book with a series of concerts subtitled Storyteller, where he played classic Kinks songs, read from the book, told stories, and showcased new songs. The Storyteller concerts sowed the seeds of a number of projects, including the music cable network VH1's recurring series of the same name. Davies himself released a book entitled Storyteller, filled with short stories, and a similarly titled album that captured one of his solo acoustic concerts. That record was his first solo effort since Return to Waterloo, and was released in the spring of 1998.More: https://www.raydavies.info/bio/

He helped define the sound of early Sixties' British rockThe name Shel Talmy may not be immediately recognizable, unless you’re a liner note junkie. But, you’ve certainly heard his work. Talmy is responsible for producing all of the early singles for the Kinks including “You Really Got Me,” “All Day and All the Night,” and “Sunny Afternoon.”He also went on to do the same for the Who, with “I Can’t Explain,” “My Generation” and “Anyway Anyhow Anywhere.” “Friday on My Mind” by the Easybeats is another credit. But, probably the band he’s most proud of is one that didn’t make it. The Creation had everything, catchy songs, a flashy guitarist in Eddie Phillips, an incendiary live show, yet they never even made a dent in the US charts. The Numero Group is issuing Action Painting, a 2-disc set bringing together everything this seminal band put to tape, including some brand new stereo mixes overseen by Talmy, plus alternate takes, and an exhaustive booklet with multiple essays, session notes, and a treasure trove of pictures - it’s an impressive collection for any fan of mid-Sixties British rock.We talk to Talmy about the high hopes he had for them, and why they never lived up to his lofty expectations. We also touch on his work with the Kinks, the Who and the Easybeats.
