The Good Music Show
S2 E7 Gordon Lightfoot's "Gord's Gold" x Janet Jackson's "The Velvet Rope" - Winter

The Good Music Show

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2025 87:24

Brrr... it's time for everyone's favorite season to have its day in court on the Good Music Show. Today we discuss two albums that make us think of winter. We start with Danny's pick which continues his trend of finding a song that deals with a season, and making the case why the album its on also represents that season. When he heard Song for a Winter's Night by Gordon Lightfoot - a legendary folk singer-songwriter from Canada - he thought it was the perfect non-Christmas song. This album is half new recordings of Gordon's catalog and half compilation of his Warner hits. Though a variety of seasons and weather are represented here, the warmness of both Gord's voice and the production by Lenny Waronker are a perfect sonic stand-in for a crackling fire for those cold, lonely winter months (or in Danny's case, days)Then we talk about an album that to Julius represents the sadness and introspection often brought on by winter. "The Velvet Rope" is a peak in a run of excellent albums by Janet Jackson, who unfortunately doesn't get talked about enough in today's pop ecosystem. We compare this album to current trends in pop, as well as praise the impeccable production by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Janet's experience at the time of making this album results in many songs dealing with extreme emotions and allows for the listener to experience validation and catharsis through the energetic and crisp production. Now is the time to appreciate what Janet accomplished, despite anything that may have overshadowed her art.Songs featured in this episode:Canadian Railroad Trilogy (from "The Way I Feel" and "Gord's Gold")SundownOld Dan's RecordsGot 'Til It's GoneGot 'TIl It's Gone (Ummah Jay Dee's Revenge Mix)Go DeepMy NeedSend us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! On today's episode, I am excited to share the audio recording of a live event I recently emceed for HRN. Lessons Learned: Tales from Small Business Owners features captivating stories from four storytellers who opened up about their trials and tribulations in the restaurant business. Sponsored by TD Bank, the event took place at the Tilit NYC Showroom. In addition to introducing our fabulous guests, I sprinkled some of my own stories throughout the night. The first small business storyteller was Eric Huang of Pecking House, Brooklyn. An Eleven Madison Park alum, the pandemic caused Eric to reexamine his career and business. He found that fried chicken made him rethink everything.Johnny Spero of Bar Spero in Washington D.C. told the story of finding success with his Georgetown restaurant, Reverie, but then being met with catastrophe when it burned down. He emphasized not giving up on your passion and being sure to stop and feel your feelings.Yajaira Gonzalez of Pop and Pour in Washington Heights spoke about her business surviving the pandemic. Yajaira said her strength came from her ability to find positives even in the face of challenges. She advised that people should do their research before making decisions, be flexible, understand sacrifices, and use professionals when needed.Buddy the Bar's Claire Sprouse, owner of the now-closed Hunky Dory in Crown Heights, Brooklyn closed out the evening. She told the crowd that believed that her location and community kept her going while she was in business. The timing of the pandemic and the need to prioritize her personal life helped her make the decision to permanently close the restaurant, however. She said she thinks anyone considering the restaurant industry should take a deep look at what they really want before jumping in.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. It's always a sigh of relief when I finish one of these epic anthologies and I'm happy with the final product. Volume four of the Ultimate 90's House Classics showcases the splintering of the genre and how more progressive versions of House Music were suddenly taking over dance floors. Club 69 (a.k.a. Peter Rauhofer) who was generally a sexy house music production geared toward gay audiences, changed musical directions quite rapidly. Eventually, the productions became more progressive and frenetic, which would drive peak hour crowds into a tizzy. Club 69 hit it big with remixes for Funky Green Dogs "Fired Up" and Kevin Aviance "Din Da Da" amongst many others during this period. At the same time, Tony Moran, Junior Vasquez, Victor Calderone, Ralphi Rosario and Hex Hector were beefing up their sound while making it more palatable to a mainstream audience giving the genre and even further reach.  This is not to say the House Music in its purest form wasn't still king as evidenced by the multitude of #1 club songs included in this final set. But, this new sound was embarking on something much bigger that would eventually takeover not only the charts but dance floors in the coming years. Everyone found their place or shall I say true calling as a DJ and no longer were these guys just a DJ, two turntables and a microphone (thank you Beck). They were stars in their own right that could pack a venue. Perhaps the biggest contributor to their stardom was none other than Clive Davis of Arista records. He saw not just in terms of financial but the need to expand his diva roster's reach into the world of dance and by extension their popularity. After all, where would Deborah Cox be today if it weren't for him pushing her in both angles of R&B and Dance extending her visibility across boundaries. While Party Favorz enjoys all the various genres and tribute sets I put out from Trash Disco, 80's Dance, Eurodance and Trance — I have the most affinity with House Music and its various iterations. The Ultimate 90's House Classics series is dear to my heart. While this series is far from the last word on House Music (as there's just way too much to be included even if the artists and songs deserve it) — it's likely the closest you'll ever find in a comprehensive history of the genre. We still have two more years to go with 1998 - 1999, which are bound to bring back some fond memories for many of you. I'm not certain as to when I'll be dropping those but likely sometime in the summer or no later than early fall. I still have the Ultimate Trance series I've been teasing that I want to get out by the end of the year as well. Until then...ENJOY! As we’re taping Opening Soon this chilly March morning, we’ve just passed the one-year anniversary since the declaration of this pandemic, the start of shutdowns, and, for most, the switch into survival mode. While many businesses, chefs, cooks, and anyone, for that matter, have sought to survive, some have found a way to thrive - to go beyond. Not just in business, but also in social good. The hustle has been real for most of us, fits and starts, iteration after iteration. Our guest today has perhaps out-hustled them all while raising millions for social justice causes. It’s no surprise to us as we met today’s guest several years ago in our Tilit store, and her vibe exudes genuine care as well as both personal and community success. We're excited to welcome to the show Executive Pastry Chef, Paola Velez. In the past year, Paola began a new role as the E. Pastry Chef at famed DC restaurants, Compass Rose and Maydan. She co-founded Bakers Against Racism, raising over $2M for causes related to BLM. AND she started 2 pop-ups, Dona Dona and La Bodega Bakery, inside Compass Rose.Photo Courtesy of Paola Velez.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Pizza is the perfect food. Some (meaning me) might argue it can cure anything. From its intended cure for hunger to something as broad as a global pandemic. Well, that may be difficult to back up with science. However, today’s guest will show us how pizza has taken her through a countrywide shutdown and transformed stay-at-home orders into a DIY masterclass and an entrepreneurial kickstart in hospitality.Chef Nina Levin is basically living Alex’s post-Tilit retirement dream; slinging pizzas on the beach using the freshest seasonal ingredients. The world has gone on pause, and whether you agree with it or not, our government and our society have seemingly dealt a near-death blow to every restauranteur out there. So when all bets are off, why not try something new? Something you’ve been thinking about for years, or perhaps something you and your friend concocted in a late-night, buzz-induced brainstorming session. Today’s marketplace is the perfect time to try something creative, perhaps super low-budget, but don’t forget to make it good. This season we’re very much into the new hustle. Collaborations, pop-ups, the scrappy, and the lean-minded. Diners, whether still at home or newly vaccinated, are in dire need of fresh food from some fresh minds. Today we’re joined with 3 chefs from Asheville, NC. Rob Jones from The Chop Shop Butchery, Graham House of Session Cafe, and Andrew Mcleod of Ave M., who have teamed up to pop-up every Monday and Tuesday. We’ve spoken with chefs on closing down, pivoting to delivery, approaching their local government and mental health and well being in this unprecedented era. Now we chat financial healing. There are predictions that more than 75% of independent restaurants may not make it back from this crisis. With 11 million people and employed directly by independent restaurants, they serve as a hub for the community and we all need them to come back. We know the industry will beat these odds but we also know we need help and support. The government passed CAREs on 3/27. Since then the SBA and banks have been scrambling to get applications live and small businesses are trying to figure out what it all means. Our guest today is Ben McCrery, president of One Park Financial in Miami, Florida. The last name is not a coincidence; Ben is Alex’s brother. He also happens to be an expert in small business lending, and has helped secure over $7M in funding for restaurants.  Ben has been instrumental in helping Tilit navigate the loans and assistance available due to the crisis. Opening Soon is powered by Simplecast.

Torn Bicep Tendon? How To Speed Up Recovery After Surgery

Cinderella wasn't referring to a torn bicep when they sang the 80's rock ballad, "Don't Know What You've Got 'Til It's Gone," but that song title is #truth when it comes to a ruptured biceps tendon. You don't give much thought to how valuable your bicep is in everyday movement until it's no longer attached to your forearm. In a fraction of a second, and with the sound of a gunshot, your arm goes from feeling strong and functional to weak and flaccid. After getting over the disbelief, your mind moves to the reality of surgery and the recovery process. When done right, your recovery can return your arm to its previous strength and function. Done wrong, your recovery process can leave you with subpar strength, reduced range of motion, and a thick and ropey tendon layered in scar tissue. Article ShortcutsPrevalence of Distal Biceps Tendon RupturesFrequently Asked Questions About Torn Bicep Tendons (Distal Biceps Tendon Ruptures)Recovery From Biceps Tendon Reattachment SurgeryExerciseNutritionSupplementationLifestyle HacksProfessional-Level Physical Therapy & RehabPatience Prevalence of Distal Biceps Tendon Ruptures Distal biceps tendon ruptures occur in one to three out of every 100,000 patients each year, with middle-aged men making up most of the cases. As hard as it is to believe, the first reported biceps reattachment took place in 1898! I wonder who drew the short straw for that surgeon to try out the new surgery. Though it sucks when it happens, you can get back to lifting, playing, and posing in your underwear (if that's your thing), in a short period of time. A good surgeon, and a solid rehab and recovery program can get you close to the strength, endurance, and muscle size you had before you tore it. Of course, this all hinges on your willingness to work hard during the recovery period. As common as it is for people to tear their biceps tendon, there isn't much information on how to maximize recovery. So, I thought I'd put together an article to that does just that. I'll start with a few frequently asked questions. Frequently Asked Questions About Torn Bicep Tendons (Distal Biceps Tendon Ruptures) Before I delve into the recovery strategies, let me answer some common questions. Chances are, you're reading this because you just tore your bicep (or you know someone who did) and need to know how to deal with it. Do you have to get your biceps tendon reattached? It’s possible to lift your arm and hold your spouse's hand without getting your tendon reattached. However, you probably won't be opening pickle jars or rock climbing up the same cliffs with the same confidence if you skip surgery. Your bicep turns your hand out (supination) as well as helps lift your forearm and hand toward your shoulder (elbow flexion). A ruptured tendon reduces supination strength by 40-60%, and elbow flexion strength by 30%. While it isn't life-threatening, you'll find that it's inconvenient. The investment in surgery right away will be worth it. I only have a partial tear. Should I still do surgery? In many ways, a partial tear is worse. With part of the tendon still attached, you're more likely to experience pain when you use your arm, and you're more likely to end up tearing it down the road anyway. The bigger issue is, if you wait to do surgery, you end up with fraying of the tendon, which makes it difficult for a surgeon to reattach it. If you opt for immediate surgery, your surgeon will cut the rest of the tendon and clean it all up before reattaching it, making it more likely you'll have a successful outcome. If I have it reattached, what is the chance that I'll tear it again? If your surgery goes well, and you follow a solid post-surgery plan, it isn't likely. Only 1.5% to 1.6% of patients re-rupture their biceps tendon. How soon after a rupture should I have surgery? As soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more your bicep retracts up your arm,

And if you’ve ever seen those hideous Hammer pants that chefs wear, you know exactly why.
