Professor Sander van der Linden's fascination with misinformation traces back to his own family's scars under Nazism, a regime that perfected propaganda so insidious it seeped invisibly into everyday life. In his award-winning book Foolproof, van der Linden argues that misinformation is a psychological virus, spreading through minds the way a biological virus hijacks cells. From Third Reich leaflets to modern algorithms, the tools have evolved, but the core infection remains the same: exploiting our mental shortcuts and illusions of truth. As the Capitol riots show, unchecked lies can kill. Van der Linden's mission is urgent: to build psychological vaccines that inoculate society from misinformation before deepfakes, AI, and data-hungry platforms unleash the next generation of invisible propaganda and push us past the point of no return. Guest bio: Professor Sander van der Linden is a Cambridge social psychologist and award-winning author of Foolproof. He pioneered the concept of “psychological vaccines” against misinformation, advises governments and tech companies worldwide, and his research has shaped global strategies to combat fake news, conspiracy theories, and the growing threat of deepfakes. Van der Linden is the Professor of Social Psychology in Society in the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab. With Madelyn van der Hoogt's extensive knowledge of loom-controlled structures and techniques, you might be surprised to learn that the celebrated weaving teacher spent her first years as a handweaver working on a backstrap loom. On a sabbatical in Latin America from her teaching career in Oakland, Madelyn traveled from village to village looking for the style of weaving she wanted to do, then sought out a local teacher. But when she moved back to the United States and began a new life as a farmer, her backstrap weaving style hit a snag: sitting on the ground to weave under a tree is a lot less pleasant when you are the favorite meal of chiggers. Falling in love with shaft looms and the cloth she could make, Madelyn began the weaving explorations that would make her the editor of two national weaving magazine, instructor in a half dozen weaving videos, and leader of a weaving school. She now has over 30 looms in her home teaching studio, each ready to explore a different weave structure. Despite decades as a writer and editor, she doesn't hesitate before identifying first and foremost as a teacher. Why has your LinkedIn reach dropped even though your content is better and your audience is growing? You're not imagining things. LinkedIn changed the rules in 2025, and in this episode, LinkedIn algorithm expert Richard van der Blom breaks down exactly what's changed—and how recruiters can adjust to stay visible and competitive. You'll discover why organic reach is down by 50%+ for most users and how LinkedIn has shifted focus from virality to relevance. Richard shares how to realign your content strategy based on your goals—whether you're looking to increase reach, drive engagement, or generate client and candidate leads. We also unpack the five content pillars that top-performing recruiters use, the formats that LinkedIn is rewarding right now (like vertical native video and carousels), and why relying solely on job posts or text-only content can quietly kill your visibility. Richard goes even deeper, revealing his proven process for creating “hybrid” content—written by humans but enhanced by AI—to dramatically improve structure, hooks, and engagement without losing authenticity. Episode Highlights: [3:25] How Richard reverse-engineered LinkedIn's algorithm manually [8:35] LinkedIn confirms reach is down 50%+—here's why [12:37] The 5 content types that drive performance in 2025 [18:42] Why recruiters need variety to maintain reach and engagement [21:21] Post formats that are working best and which are declining. [26:10] When selfies help—and when they hurt your reach [28:07] Using polls to generate leads and market insights [32:02] Why hybrid content (human + AI) outperforms both extremes [35:51] Why LinkedIn's built-in AI tools aren't your best option Key Takeaways for Recruiters: Fix Your Reach: The algorithm now values relevance > reach. Focus on content that fits your audience and objective. Diversify Formats: Don't just post jobs. Use video, polls, carousels, and storytelling to stay visible. Hybrid Content Wins: Human + AI = stronger structure, better hooks, and more engagement. AI-only content often fails, and human only content often lacks polish. Combine both for maximum impact. If you're a recruiter or agency owner looking to build your brand, attract inbound leads, and stay ahead of LinkedIn's changes—this episode is your roadmap. Today's interview is with Jochem van der Veer, the Co-Founder and CEO of TheyDo, a leading platform for journey management that helps organisations build seamless customer experiences by aligning teams around the customer journey. We discuss customer journeys, journey mapping, and data, highlighting how businesses risk exacerbating data overwhelm if they don't rethink their approach. Additionally, we explore the finding that 41% of business leaders rarely involve other departments in data-driven decisions. This interview follows on from my recent interview – Voice still reigns in customer service – Interview with Nikola Mrkšić of PolyAI – and is number 545 in the series of interviews with authors and business leaders who are doing great things, providing valuable insights, helping businesses innovate and delivering great service and experience to both their customers and their employees.
A vast change to what's been promised for Auckland City Rail Link's opening capacity. In 2022, it was reported 27 thousand peak passengers would be using the rail line from opening day next year. That's now gone down to 19 thousand passengers an hour at peak times. AT Public Transport Director Stacey van der Putten told Mike Hosking the 27 thousand figure merged a few different elements including design capacity, timetabling, and patronage. She points out that 19,000 is still a significant increase on current numbers, as it's still a 50% increase in patronage. Van der Putten told Hosking it will take some effort to rebuild confidence in the rail network after the prolonged disruption, but there's plenty of enthusiasm for the new line. Stefaan van der Jeught, Professor of EU Constitutional Law at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and a Press Officer at the Court of Justice of the European Union, joins SlatorPod to talk about the complex relationship between language and law in the EU.Stefaan outlines the historical evolution of EU language policy, from French-only founding treaties to the gradual inclusion of all member state languages. Despite formal equality, institutions largely define their own internal language regimes, leading to fragmented and often English-centric practices. Stefaan's book EU Language Law, now in its second edition, examines these issues in depth. Updated with new case law, legislation, and developments in AI and governance, it includes a 10-point roadmap for reform. Stefaan advocates for greater transparency, legal protection of linguistic diversity, and a constitutional debate on the role of language in EU integration.AI, Stefaan believes, is a tool that can enhance multilingual access and consistency across EU communications. However, he cautions against using AI as a cost-cutting measure that replaces linguistic expertise. Instead, AI should serve as a support tool, with human revision, especially in legal contexts. On regional languages like Catalan, Basque, and Galician, Stefaan notes they face legal hurdles at the EU level because they lack full legislative status in their home countries. He argues for a more transparent and constitutional debate on language policy, drawing inspiration from multilingual countries like Switzerland and Belgium.Stefaan concludes by advising universities to train future legal linguists by going beyond technical instruction to foster critical thinking, comparative law expertise, and cultural literacy.

Melodie Van Der Baan talks about her career journey; juggling motherhood & entrepreneurship; positivity; and the intricate dance between supply and demand. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [04.04] The early years of Melodie's career, why she fell in love with retail, and how her experiences laid the groundwork for her entrepreneurial journey. “I loved every store, every city, every boutique owner I visited and sold to. But, without fail, they would point out what didn't sell from the season before, and say ‘Mel, what are you going to do about it?' And so I had to find a solution to their problem.” “My husband said: ‘This isn't a you problem, it's an industry problem. It's a lack of a network that needs to exist, and you should create it!' But this was before Amazon, Shopify wasn't a thing yet, Point of Sales were server-based, not cloud-based. So even though the problem was real, the industry wasn't ready for the solution.” [08.31] Why Melodie chose not to go to college, her Mother's words of advice, and why she decided to open her own retail store. “Every step of my journey has been so natural.” [11.56] Melodie's experience as a working Mom, setting an example for her daughter, and why experience is the best teacher. [15.09] Melodie's advice for parents struggling with work/life balance, and why consistency is key. “We can't give our best at work and leave the scraps for our family.” [19.33] How Melodie developed a unique understanding of the intricate dance between supply and demand, the biggest challenges faced by retailers and distributors, and why understanding your inventory is crucial. [24.57] Why Melodie moved from retail to technology, an overview of her business Max Retail, and how she brings retail experts and tech leaders together to solve the biggest industry challenges. “It was never an intention to become a CEO of a technology company. The truth is that there was no way to solve the problem without technology.” [29.37] Melodie's experience as a woman navigating the worlds of retail, technology and supply chain, and her uniquely positive outlook. “When you know the authenticity of someone, it can gender-neutralize.” [32.22] Melodie's commitment to taking a ‘we lift while we climb' approach, the role others have played in her success, and how she pays it forward. [36.00] Melodie's biggest achievements, personally and professionally, and the passion that drives them. [38.18] The future for Melodie, and for Max Retail.
