You've probably heard us mention Trophium on the podcast. This week, we sat down with Doug VanderMolen, one of the co-founders, to dig into what the app actually is and why it exists. Doug's background is in tech. He spent years at Google and has built his career around making products that actually work for people. He met his co-founder Jeff on a bike trip through Mississippi, and Jeff pitched him a problem: he'd been hunting and fishing his whole life but had no good way to capture and remember those experiences. That's where Trophium came from. We talked about what makes it different from general social media, the outfitter program they're building, and where they want to take it over the next five years. Most triathletes are limited not by their physical capacity to train more or harder, but by being time-limited, so we're constantly looking for ways to make more out of the time we have to train. Nowhere is this challenge greater than when training for Ironman or other full distance triathlon races on a limited time budget. In this episode, coach Natasha Van Der Merwe joins me to discuss how to deal with this challenge in the context of age-group triathlon training.HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: How to maximize your triathlon training outcomes on a limited time budget - even if you're training for an Ironman! How do you know when you're really just limited by time and training volume? If you are volume-limited, how can you get around that when you don't really have more time to spare. Civil society is the backbone of democracy: citizens organizing to defend freedoms, strengthen their communities, and hold power accountable. Yet across Europe and beyond, this space is increasingly under pressure. What begins as calls for “transparency” can quickly turn into efforts to discredit and defund independent organizations. At a time of geopolitical instability and democratic backsliding, supporting civil society is not optional, it is structural to the future of European democracy. In this episode, Raquel García-Hermida van der Walle, Member of the European Parliament for D66, reflects on the growing challenges facing civic space, the political will needed for EU reform, and why defending civil society must be proactive, strategic, and long-term. This podcast is produced by the European Liberal Forum in collaboration with Movimento Liberal Social and Fundacja Liberté!, with the financial support of the European Parliament. In this episode I'm joined by astrologer and friend Chris van der Walt to discuss a Vedic astrological technique called the Ages of Maturation. If you're new to astrology, this is a tool you can hit the ground running with. And for advanced practitioners, it will add new layers of depth to your readings. The concept is simple: every planet has a specific year in which it matures. Starting the year before that age, the planet begins to bloom, marking a period where its full expression comes into play. For example, Venus matures at age 25. For someone with a prominent 10th-house Venus, we'd expect that energy to make itself heard in the public sector of their life between the ages of 24 and 25. Think: job promotions, career shifts, or significant changes in reputation.Similarly, once a planet reaches maturation, we can expect full mastery over its themes. This is why we often say Saturn becomes easier after its maturation at age 36.So elegant! So powerful!During our conversation, Chris and I go over each of the planets, their themes, and their year of maturation, sharing stories from our own lives. If you'd like one-on-one guidance exploring these ages, I'm offering a limited number of specially priced readings where we can map out your own planetary story.Book your reading here. Are you in Los Angeles? Chris is my guest for the upcoming Los Angeles Astro Salon at the Philosophical Research Society on Tuesday, February 24th.We'll be exploring these Years of Maturation as well as a few other simple-to-use techniques, then opening up the room for stories.Get your Astro Salon tickets here. Can't make it?
If you're craving a book that channels the delicious, edge-of-your-seat thrill of those iconic '90s psychological dramas — think The Hand That Rocks the Cradle or Single White Female — look no further. Jennifer Van Der Kleut's debut, The Better Mother, delivers. It's unhinged in the best way, deliciously chaotic, and anchored by a lead villain you'll absolutely love to hate. Tense, twisty, and dripping with nostalgia, this one feels like a late-night thriller you can't turn off — but in book form.I was so thrilled to welcome Jennifer to Books Are Chic to chat about her road to this sensational suspense novel. We talked about our favorite thrillers, how Blair Waldorf inspired the story, her persistence on the path to publication, and the Reddit thread that sparked it all. Conversations like this are why I love what I do — getting to peek behind the curtain of a story this juicy.I truly can't wait to see what's next for Jennifer, because The Better Mother is one I'll be thinking about for a long time.

Send a textEver notice how your best boundary script disappears the second your parent's name lights up your phone? We dig into why that happens and what to do next, blending lived experience with clinical insight to make sense of fawning, conditioned guilt, and the body's fierce loyalty to old safety strategies. Our guest, licensed professional counselor Jessica Van der Merwe, specializes in trauma, complex trauma, dissociation, and adult children of dysfunctional families—and she brings both expertise and heart to a topic that feels raw, messy, and very real.Together we unpack the gap between knowing and doing: why cognitive plans crumble under stress, how the nervous system prioritizes survival over scripts, and what it takes to gently retrain your body that choosing yourself is safe. We draw a clear line between true guilt and conditioned guilt, offering simple language and somatic anchors—like labeling sensations and repeating this is not an emergency—to help you keep boundaries without drowning in shame. We also name the grief so many carry: ambiguous loss for the parent you needed but didn't have, and the heavy loop of hope and letdown when change never comes. If “self-care” makes you cringe, you're not alone. We introduce realistic, micro-sized experiments in self-priority that respect your window of tolerance, from delaying a reply to stepping outside for one minute of sun. No ultimatums, no quick fixes—just steady practice that teaches your system a new story about safety and connection. Expect validation, practical tools, and a compassionate reminder that your body isn't broken; it's brilliant at keeping you alive, and it can learn new patterns.Listen now and share your take: what tiny experiment will you try this week—and what better word should replace “self-care”? About Patrick Van der Burght: Patrick van der Burght is an international expert in ethical persuasion, influence, and decision-making. He is a business partner of Dr. Robert Cialdini—author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion—and a founding member of the Cialdini Institute, the only active, licensed Cialdini Institute worldwide.A certified influence specialist and trainer across Australia and New Zealand, Patrick has spent over two decades teaching professionals how to persuade ethically, accelerate results, and build stronger relationships across sales, leadership, marketing, and team environments. He is also the co-author of How to Hear “Yes” More Often (2024) and host of the podcast Ethical Persuasion Unlocked. In this episode, Jennie and Patrick Van der Burght discuss:The seven universal principles of persuasion derived from Cialdini's researchThe distinction between genuine reciprocity and gated lead magnets as rewardsThe roles of liking and unity in building rapport and a sense of shared identityThe use of social proof and authority to enhance credibility and influenceThe impact of consistency and scarcity on ethical decision-making and behavior Key Takeaways:Ethical persuasion is not about clever wording; it is about aligning your message with how people naturally make decisions.Clarity reduces friction. When buyers clearly understand what happens next, they feel safer saying yes.Trust is built not through volume or urgency but through consistency, credibility, and honesty over time.Authority works best when it is demonstrated rather than declared, especially in relationship-based sales models like direct selling. When persuasion principles are applied with integrity, decisions feel easier, faster, and more empowering for everyone involved.“Information is not really power. Application skill is power, and I would argue that you need confidence to go along with it.” — Patrick Van der Burght Connect with Patrick Van der Burght:LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/patrick-van-der-burghtFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/patrick.burght/ CONNECT WITH JENNIE:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/badassdirectsalesmasteryInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/badassdirectsalesmastery/Website: https://badassdirectsalesmastery.com/Show: https://badassdirectsalesmastery.com/blog/YouTube: COMING SOON!LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/badassdirectsalesmastery/Email: jennie@badassdirectsalesmastery.com Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions.
