The Women's Legislative Network of NCSL is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Every female state legislator in the 50 states, territories and the District of Columbia belong to the Women's Legislative Network. The network sponsors informational briefings, hosts skill building workshops for women and opportunities for female legislators to interact. Senator Dafna Michaelson Jenet, a Democrat of Colorado and the current president of the WLN, and Representative DeAnn Vaught, a Republican of Arkansas and the incoming president of the group, joined the podcast to discuss the anniversary and women in legislatures more generally.They discussed how they decided to run for the legislature, the obstacles they faced and the perspective female legislators bring to the job. Our WLN board members were excited to be joined at our meeting at the City of Westminster College last week by Ann Limb, who was the original founding chair of the Women's Leadership Network — nearly 30 years ago. But of course, that's not the half of it. Youngest woman principal of an FE college, founder of the Helena Kennedy Foundation, the list goes on and so do the accolades. If you LIVE in the Florida Keys or you are on Vacation in the Florida Keys, I have a great restaurant for you to visit. I visited the FL Keys Steak & Lobster House, which is located at 3660 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050 Here's the link to their website www.FlKeysSteakAndLobster.com The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands……and they stretch about 120 miles off the southern tip of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. There are literally over a THOUSAND islands in the Keys. This was my 1st visit to the Keys, so…… I am NOT an authority by any means, on the Florida Keys! What I am good at……is finding you Restaurants with Healthy Options during YOUR trip to the Keys! Thankfully…….The “Keys” are divided up into 3 Major Sections: The “Upper Keys” The “Middle Keys”……. And …….The “Lower Keys” To give you a perspective……..Key Largo is located in the “Upper Keys,” which is the Northern part of The Keys, and is located South of Miami. Key West is located in the “Lower Keys”…….the Southern most part of the Keys. Today, I am going to tell you about a fantastic restaurant on the island of “Marathon,” which is located in the “middle keys.” I mentioned to you last week…..that I was visiting My Friends……. I love that the tables are not squished up against each other too! I had plenty of room to eat and I was able to have a conversation with my guests…..without SCREAMING! I HATE sitting at a table in a restaurant & I can’t even have a conversation with my guests without screaming at the top of my lungs! Nice atmosphere at FL Keys Steak & Lobster House! Our WAITER was named Jason, and Jason was an excellent waiter. The kind of waiter, when you tell him ONCE what you are drinking and he comes back with another glass at exactly the right time! Jason was also great at recommending items from the menu based on my “LIVING a Healthy Lifestyle” criteria. Thank you Jason for obviously liking your job and taking care of me and my guests that night! Now…..let’s take a look at the menu MENU They have a full-line list of adult beverages with beer, wine and specialty drinks. I found the Gluten-Free "Redbridge Beer" interesting, and they have non-alcoholic O’Douls Beer as well. They serve unsweetened ice tea as well as bottled & sparkling water. The appetizers are abundant and tempting. You have to ALWAYS remember you are eating healthy, which means eating REAL Food……the Weight Loss Nation motto is…. “If it grows out of the ground, hangs from a tree, roams the Earth, flies in the sky or swims in the ocean…..EAT it™” Don’t think hard about this and definitely don’t try and manipulate what the motto means. The motto does NOT mean eating Fried Food. Shrimp that has a bread batter and then deep fried in vegetable oil….is NOT…..Healthy Eating or Eating Real Food. Healthy Eating an option from the menu like this …….Chunks of fresh lobster marinated with lemon juice, oranges, cilantro, onions and cucumber…..This Healthy Eating option is called Lobster Ceviche. For $15.95, you get FRESH and I mean FRESH.... Lobster with healthy fruits and veggies, that come together beautifully! Also on the Appetizer list…… is my NEW FAVORITE SHRIMP! Which is PINK, Wild Caught Gulf Shrimp Cocktail! For $15.95, you’ll get FOUR HUGE....SWEET.... Pink Gulf Shrimp, with a side of cocktail sauce. The Shrimp is soo sweet…..all you really need is a squeeze of lemon on each shrimp….Delicious! There is an absolute Delicious list of healthy salads you could choose from. I would suggest since you’re in the Florida Keys, where fresh fish and shellfish are brought to the FL Keys Steak & Lobster House Daily, that you try not to EAT a SALAD….although delicious….for your main meal! Listen to some of these AWESOME Entrees! First …… All of the seafood is bought fresh DAILY to the Fl Keys Steak & Lobster House Restaurant and prepared to order. All dinners are served with your choice of two sides. You can get the fresh vegetable of the day and a small house salad as your sides. AND…..Unlimited soup and salad bar can be added to any entrée for just $6.95 The first Delicious Healthy Menu Option is..... The Broiled Seafood Platter on the menu for $32.95 You get…..Fresh Mahi…shrimp….scallops and….. a crab cake broiled to perfection! I was very tempted to get this entrée….and next time I visit….I will get it…..but I saw Coconut-Macadamian Nut Crusted Snapper on the menu and I flipped! The Coconut Macadamian Crusted Snapper is Pan Fried in olive oil, and a Mango Sauce and then topped with Red Peppers in a butter sauce onto your plate! No hesitation for me…..That’s what I ordered! When I go somewhere that has fresh fish and can properly cook and prepare fish…..I order it! The Snapper filet was white, flaky and the blend of coconut macadamian nut with mango sauce was BEAUTIFUL! The Snapper also comes with 2 sides, which I ordered the grilled vegetables and a small house salad. The Snapper Entree costs $32.95, but I’ll tell you what…….It was the BEST DAMN Snapper I have EVER had! There are other fantastic seafood entrees on the menu too! IF you feel like steak, chops or ribs…..they have wonderful entrees on the menu for you too. They pretty much cater to everyone at FL Keys Steak & Lobster Restaurant. They even have a kid’s menu! They also have Free Raised Veal & Poultry entrees and they have Vegetarian entrees too! They have a Spicy Grilled Tofu Salad for $16.95 Which is Served with mixed greens, walnuts & raisins covered with a spicy dressing. The Healthy options on this menu is ABUNDANT Nation! Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com ARE BRUSSELS SPROUTS FROM BRUSSELS? Brussels Sprout are part of the “wild cabbage” & “mustard seed” family. According to the “New World Encyclopedia,” Brussels Sprout were likely cultivated in Ancient Rome and possibly as early as 1200 B.C. in Belgium’s Capital City - Brussels. So.....YES....Brussels Sprout comes from Brussels, Belgium! There is written documentation of Brussels Sprout as early as 1587, being used as a vegetable crop and it is believed Brussels Sprout originated from a mutation from the “Savoy Cabbage.” The vegetable grows as a “Stem,” which the “sprouts” grow into a “cabbage-like” head. Many rows of sprouts are produced on a single…..long…..stem. The leafy, green buds look like miniature “cabbages.” There are two main varieties that are grown. One is the “tall” variety, which stands 2-4 feet tall…..and the second is the “short” variety, which grows to a maximum of 2 feet tall. Brussels Sprout like “cool” temperatures and produces best at between 60-65 Degrees Fahrenheit. Fields are ready for “harvest,” between 90 days to 6 months. Depending on the variety, a Brussels Sprout “stalk,” can product 1 ½ - 3 pounds of Brussels Sprout per Stalk! That’s a lot of Brussels Sprout! Brussels Sprout were brought to the U.S, around 1800, when French Settlers brought them to Louisiana. Commercial production began in the Louisiana Delta around 1925, and production was moved to mid-California in 1939. Some of the production was also moved to New York in the same year. Much of the U.S. production of Brussels Sprout is in California, with a smaller percentage grown in Skagit Valley, Washington, where cool springs, mild summers, and rich soil is perfect for the Brussels Sprout. An even smaller percentage is grown on Long Island, New York, where it is also cool in spring and fall. Currently, there are several thousand acres planted in coastal areas of San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties of California which offer an ideal combination of coastal fog and cool temperatures year-round. Your body "burns calories," as you move and perform activities. Many of you have stated on my FB thread, that you LOVE to Dance! While in Orlando, I decided to stop into a nightclub that offers a high energy, fun way to sing, dance or even play a musical instrument if you want! I visited Howl At The Moon to see if I could "Live a Healthy Lifestyle," while visiting a nightclub. I arrived on a Saturday night, around 11:00pm and International Drive in Orlando was hustling n' bustling! A tall, strong man greeted me and my Podcaster friends with a smile, at the front entrance to Howl At The Moon. "Ten Dollar Cover Charge folks," he stated. "What band is playing? I asked. "You haven't been here before have you?" The bouncer asked with a slight grin. "Never," I replied. After telling the bouncer I was the host of Weight Loss Nation Podcast and I wanted to rate & review Howl At The Moon for the podcast.......the bouncer answered...."let me get you the manager." About five minutes later, a young man with a big smile came over and introduced himself as Paul Pronsati, the General Manager. I asked Mr. Pronsati if he would mind if I rated & reviewed Howl At The Moon for my podcast and Mr. Pronsati was happy to oblige. When you enter the premise, you better be ready to dance! There is a "U - Shaped" Bar as you enter the room. Tables and chairs are set up near the bar for those of you that aren't dancing! Then......you see & hear the entertainment! On stage you see two pianos facing each other and the band is rockin out to Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog." Behind the stage sits two large mirrors, framed out and separated.....with messages written with "removable ink." On the left side the message reads......$24 Drink Tito's .... on the right side reads.....$5 Go Eagles! I asked a server walking past me what the messages meant on the mirrors and she replied...."People pay to have their messages seen. You have to pay a higher amount then what's on the board to have your message displayed." What a cool idea! I'm watching a large crowd singing and dancing and I decide to try out the message board. I walk up to side of the stage, where a table has pens and paper for you to sign up to have your message posted. I jot down...... $6 Subscribe to The Weight Loss Nation Podcast. I hand the paper to one of the band members and he gives me an "affirmative nod," and puts out an open hand. I hand him $6 in cash and he walks straight over to the right side of the mirror and "erases" ....Go Eagles....then promptly writes $6 Subscribe to The Weight Loss Nation Podcast on the mirror. How friggin cool! What was even cooler....is that my message stayed up on that mirror for about 20 minutes! Cool concept.....cheap advertising! As soon as the band finished playing.....I see a woman and man step up to the stage and the guy sits behind the drums and the woman takes one of the mics. The band plus the additional two members start to play a "Heart" song. I get the attention of another server near me and ask her who the woman is that is singing on the stage. The server replies...."that's a customer who paid to sing that song with her boyfriend playing the drums." WHAT???? I then ask the server....."Can anyone do that?" Server replies...."of course...that's part of the entertainment here all night." Wow.....another cool concept. I felt like I was in a foreign country since I had no idea what was going on right before my eyes. The crowd LOVES it! People are singing and dancing to the amateurs singing and playing on the stage. I decide to join the crowd and BURN some calories by DANCING! I danced two straight songs that were awesome and then went to grab some water at the bar. I asked the bartender for a menu and he handed me one. I wanted to see if I could find any "healthy" items on the menu. The only thing was.....I only saw "drinks" on the menu. I asked the bartender if I could see the "food" menu and he says......"We don't serve food here. It's BYOF." (Bring Your Own Food). I was like.....You have NO FOOD to eat here? The bartender was a sweetie. With great patience he replies....."We have a vending machine in the corner there. People bring their own food." We have private parties with food, but that's it." I walked over to the "vending machine," and it was filled with your typical "sugar n carb" snacks. I see Paul Pronsati and I walk over to him and ask him why they don't have any "meals" to eat, and Mr. Pronsati replies......."We encourage people to bring in their own food. We are all about having a fun evening with our entertainment." "We do have private parties and offer a buffett." We want people to drink responsible and have lots of fun here. Bring in food or even have food delivered. It's all about having a good time." What an education I received that night. I danced and sang along with the crowd. I can say with certainty, if you want to "burn calories" by dancing to good music, "Howling At The Moon," is a great place to come and do just that. The "Drink" menu is quite large, and you will not be permitted to "bring in" any kind of drink. There are many creative drinks on the menu, but they are full of sugar.....so do your due dilligence. They have a nice selection of lite beers and as for wine....you can choose a Barefoot Wine selection. That's the only type of wine they have. For me and many of you.....water will be the drink of the evening. That's a good thing...since you will be singing and dancing and need to rehydrate! Bring your "grilled chicken salad," protein shake, or whatever else it is you are eating while "Living a Healthy Lifestyle." Howl at the Moon gets a BIG "Two WLN Thumbs Up," for being creative and allowing us Healthy people to bring our own food in. Burning calories by Dancing is awesome! Chef Todd was kind enough to take it a step further.... AND he taught us how to "SAUTE" ANY Protein. Chef Todd Mohr told us the "9 Steps" to Saute properly. I promised I would do the 9 Steps and report back to all of you! Well....... it's Concoction Friday and I'm ready to report...... I did it and......... I am my own worst enemy! I DID NOT follow the "9 Steps" EXACTLY as Chef Todd Mohr told me to do. What happened? I burnt everything I put into the pan! LOL! This was MY Fault! I had the "9 Steps" written down in the EXACT order Chef Todd taught me. Instead.......I "looked over" the "9 Steps" and then went into the kitchen without the paper. I tried to "Saute" by Myself! OMG! I decided to try it again. This time, I was bringing the paper with the detailed "9 Steps to SAUTE" with me. I followed the "Saute Cooking Method" just the way Chef Todd Mohr taught me. Guess what happened this time? I successfully SAUTED Chicken! Yeah!...... Chef Todd Mohr is awesome! I did it! I loved the meal! Green Balls of Health Makes 10 Small Balls (5 Servings) Serving Size – 2 Balls Ingredients ½ cup soft, pitted dates* (make sure they are sticky) 1/2 cup raw almonds 1/4 cup unsweetened cacao powder 1 T ““Matcha”” green tea powder+ ½ teaspoon more for later. 2 T unsweetened almond milk ““Matcha”” is when the green tea leaves are dried, they are then “stone ground,” into a fine powder. When you use ““Matcha”” green tea powder in your food and beverages, you are consuming the “whole leaf,” instead of drinking the nutrients, which are permeated into the water from “steeping” a tea bag or tea ball. ““Matcha”” will provide you with 3x the amount of nutrients from green tea leaves than a green tea bag. Something to think about…..right?? A study written in an article in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming “Matcha,”increased the body’s rate of burning calories. Warfare and unrest is creating a flood of refugees. The United Nations estimates there are more than 21 million refugees worldwide. Resettling them is a controversial topic. President Trump, citing problems in Europe and concerns about terrorism, wants a 120-day delay in accepting refugees into the United Sates until the vetting process is examined. Lutherans have long been involved in helping refugees. In 1939, the National Lutheran Council set up a department to help Lutheran refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. In 1954, the LCMS worked with what would become the Lutheran Immigration and Naturalization Service. Hey Weight Loss Nation! Today, I am having a conversation with Terry Davis, a Sumter County, Florida resident, who gained over 150 pounds, after battling colon cancer, and losing both her parents a short time after each other. Terry survived colon cancer and developed a difficult relationship with food. During her cancer treatment, Terry had many, many days of not wanting to eat. She felt nauseous, and the smells of certain foods caused her to lose her appetite. When Terry beat the colon cancer, she began to feel that she wanted to eat, "what she wanted to eat. if she wanted to eat chocolate cake....she ate it. If she wanted to eat fried chicken.....she ate it. Terry found herself eating more and more food. The weight quickly added up and Terry found herself at 303 pounds! Terry was tired, depressed and staying at home. Terry became her father's caretaker and cared for him 24 hours a day. Soon after her father passed, Terry's mother became sick and she found herself taking care of her mother too. It was a full-time job for Terry. Friends and neighbors brought food over to Terry's house to help out. Terry was eating macaroni and cheese, fried chicken and other fatty and "comfort" foods during this time. Terry turned to food to deal with her emotions. Terry was in a tailspin. One day, a few months after Terry's parents had both passed away, Terry felt like she was weak and passing out. Terry went to her doctor and the doctor sent her to the ER right away. In the ER, Terry had all kinds of tests. The ER Doctor came into the room and had a conversation with Terry. The Doctor told Terry that the tests revealed that she had diabetes and high blood pressure. The Doctor told Terry that she was a "pretty woman, but she was FAT!" The Doctor asked Terry if she had any grand-children. Terry responded, "Not yet." The Doctor proceeded to tell Terry that she would never see her grandchildren if she didn't immediately start losing weight. The ER Doctor told Terry to start on a low carb meal plan and that she would lose the weight and reverse the diabetes and high blood pressure. But...she had to start immediately! The conversation with the ER Doctor really hit Terry. It hit her like a rock. No one had ever told her that she was "Fat" before. Family members would tell her to start eating right and exercising, but no one ever told her she was fat. At that moment....Terry knew she had to make a drastic change in her life. Terry went home and started throwing out all the boxed food and high carb items in her house. Terry began buying healthy low-carb fruit and vegetables. Terry ate more protein. Soon, Terry lost 10 pounds! Terry knew she needed help from her family and friends to support her on this journey. Terry turned to Face Book for the answer. Terry started a Face Book page titled, "New Body Under Construction The Low Carb Way." Terry started her journey and began telling her story on the Face Book page. Terry's friends and family began "cheering her on," and Terry had the support she needed to change her lifestyle. Soon, other friends began asking Terry if they could be part of the group, and the journey grew. Seven months later, the Face Book page has over 1,900 members! People have shared their "very low carb" way of life. People share stories, recipes and questions regarding being on an "Atkin's" program. Atkin's is very low carb. Many people have had success being on the Atkin's eating plan. Many people don't do well on it. Each individual has a different blood type. We each have unique DNA and genetic markers. Our metabolism's are different. Hey Weight Loss Nation! Who out there has suffered the loss of a loved one? Who out there was bullied in school?
