Following the proposal for a Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, there has now been a proposal to transform the Greater Klang Valley into a special economic zone as well. The SEZ plan aims to reposition the region for larger investment inflows. Might its impact be marginal or momentous? There is a misconception that if you're unemployed, it's probably because you're lazy or lack the skills that the job market requires. But what about when employers purposely downsize to maximize profits? And what happens when technology becomes so advanced, that most of us become unemployed? With Malaysia's core inflation remaining high, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli has called for a collective effort to battle inflation. Recently, he has received flak for stating consumers are partly to be blamed for high food prices, and for suggesting them to avoid buying staple food such as chicken when food prices go up. However, is this the right advice for consumers feeling pinched by rising food prices? We speak to Dr Geoffrey Williams, Economist, Malaysia University of Science and Technology, for some answers.Image credit: Shutterstock.com

Malaysia continues to be in a political quagmire with no government but the economic problems still exist and are in fact exacerbated by this uncertainty. Dr Geoffrey Williams, economist at the Malaysia University of Science and Technology tells us what the new government's priorities should be.Image credit: Shutterstock
Bread and butter grievances like rising inflation, unemployment and stagnant wages continue to be voters' main concern as we head into GE15. Even though Malaysia witnessed an 8.9% growth in GDP for the second quarter of this year, we continue to see the weakness of our currency as between January and September this year, the ringgit has depreciated by 10.2% against the US dollar. And with the global economy slowing down in 2023, can Malaysia's economy sustain its growth momentum and what should be the economic priorities of the next government? For some answers we speak to Dr Geoffrey Williams, Economist, Malaysia University of Science and Technology. Image credit: Shutterstock
“Everyone has their personal passion points, and [DEI] conversation[s are] often looked at from a personal viewpoint. So it's not really looked at as a business driver or a business conversation, it's looked at as ‘I care about gender', ‘I care about race', ‘I care about disability because my child has a disability' and you have to encourage the leaders to go outside the scope of their personal passion” In Episode 24 I am joined by Geoffrey Williams, Vice President / Global Head Diversity Equity & Inclusion at Burberry, to discuss empowering the next generation of workers, the toxic cycle of “paying your dues”, and the cultural nuances in global DEI strategy. As with many DEI professionals, Geoffrey didn't start out in the field – in fact he hesitated to work in DEI when he was given the first opportunity so as not to be stereotyped. Starting out in the music and entertainment business, his increasing work with people led him to move over into Learning & Development in HR. It was during this role he bore witness to an unfair scenario that led him speaking up to the CEO. This culminated in Geoffrey being offered a DEI role to help rectify the situation, and after much research he realised DEI work was more than just giving speeches about discrimination. After talking about growing up as a Black boy in the UK in the 80s and the role of his parents in teaching how to navigate this, we talk about Geoffrey's current work with Rocking Ur Teams in empowering and educating the youth of today and making their career aspirations accessible. This progresses into a discussion over how the expectations of the current youth entering the workforce are different to previous generations, and how organisations desperately need to adapt if they want the best talent. This adaption includes how organisations and leaders must break the cycle of “paying your dues” with entry level employees committing overtime, free labour and demeaning tasks because that's what the leaders had to do. Geoffrey shares how leaders must be engaged with DEI beyond their own pet passion projects or characteristics relevant to them - he calls this leaders being “bubble bound” to their own social bubble and worldview. As we bring the conversation to a close, we discuss the common response of “oh well that doesn't happen here” that we both hear when talking about racism or other discrimination. Many people believe that discrimination problems in other countries don't happen in their own country due to it manifesting in different ways. Geoffrey explains how this is a cultural nuance that must be adapted to by global organisations, but western leaders should be careful to do it sensitively and not prioritise their own western views. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has announced that a proposal to look into a targeted fuel subsidy is under way. Ibrahim Sani speaks with Prof. Dr. Geoffrey Williams, Provost for Research and Innovation and Economist, Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) on this.
The Malaysian government is expected to spend RM28 billion on fuel subsidies this year due to rising crude oil prices, compared to RM11 billion the previous year. In light of this, the government is mulling a proposal to impose targeted fuel subsidies for lower-income groups. Can an effective targeted subsidy mechanism be implemented, and what would this look like? We discuss with economist Dr. Geoffrey Williams.Image Credit: shutterstock.com
Bank Negara Malaysia, in the Economic & Monetary Review 2021 report released this week, said that the cost of living in Malaysia needs structural reforms on both income and cost aspects. It also stated that short term measures such as price controls may pose repercussions on a long term basis. But what structural reforms should we be considering? Dr. Geoffrey Williams, Economist at Malaysia University of Science and Technology shares his thoughts. Image credit: Shutterstock.com
A day before the beginning of Black History Month, I let fellow Trekkie Geoffrey Williams talk with me about Star Trek: The Next Generation era's of spin-offs, Deep Space Nine and Voyager (both of which ran for 7 years each). Why did DS9 take three seasons to really start kicking into gear (and was Worf or O'Brien allowed far more character development as a result of transferring to this spin-off)? Why do parts of Voyager still struggle with the character development (besides producer Rick Berman's constant interference)? And where do they all rank with the saga as a whole? Dr. Geoffrey Williams and Dr. Nathalie Steinhauer join us in this episode to discuss the just released survey of colony losses between April 1, 2020 and April 1, 2021 conducted by the Bee Informed Partnership, BIP. The numbers are not getting better after 15 years. In fact, beekeepers across the United States lost 45.5% of their managed honey bee colonies last year. The survey asks beekeeping operations of all sizes to track the survival or turnover rates of their honey bee colonies. This year, 3,347 beekeepers managing 192,384 colonies across the country responded to the survey, representing about 7% of the nation's estimated 2.71 million managed colonies. This effort helps to keep a finger on the pulse of what is going on with beekeepers to identify why high losses are persisting. These losses mark the second highest loss rate the survey has recorded since it began in 2006 (6.1 percentage points higher than the average annual loss rate of 39.4%). The survey results highlight the continuing high rates of honey bee colony turnover. The high loss rate was driven by both elevated summer and winter losses this year, with no clear progression toward improvement for beekeepers and their colonies. BIP hopes to use the survey results to better understand how colony losses are experienced by beekeepers, and what can be done to reduce losses in future seasons. This past year, winter losses were reported at 32.2%, which is 9.6 percentage points higher than last year and 3.9 points higher than the survey average. Summer losses were some of the highest ever reported again this year at 31.1%, which is 0.9 percentage points lower than last year, but 8.6 points higher than the survey average. Join us as we discuss the preliminary findings of this latest BIP survey! VIDEO: New York Polyphony Perform Byrd and a modern lullaby Making recordings of quiet, spiritual music from the 16th century isn't so easy in 21st-century New York. So to record its last album, "Endbeginning," the all-male vocal ensemble New York Polyphony traveled to a medieval church in rural Lanna, Sweden. There the noise floor – the technical term for background noise – was exactly zero. In New York City, it's around 40 decibels. “We recorded our first two CDs here and we competed constantly with New York City as you can imagine,” said Craig Phillips, the group’s bass. He remembered losing one pristine take to a car horn outside the church. The group will be going back to Sweden next January to make their next album, a program of English masses by Byrd, Plummer and Tallis. “Don’t tell anybody because we’re still New York Polyphony,” joked Philips. “We're not Scandinavian Polyphony.” When the ensemble came to the WQXR Café, the production team did its best to silence the station's own auditory distractions – the refrigerator ice machine, the humming of the water cooler. Despite the prosaic surroundings the ensemble evoked an otherworldly place with a program of sacred Renaissance music as well as a lullaby by Philips (“Sleep Now,” written under his pen name Alexander Craig). This performance marked New York Polyphony’s second Café Concert and its first with a new lineup: Last fall, Geoffrey Silver, the group’s tenor since its founding in 2006, left and was replaced by the tenor Steven Caldicott Wilson (rounding out the ensemble is the countertenor Geoffrey Williams and baritone Christopher Dylan Herbert). Below is the ensemble's performance of the Agnus Dei from William Byrd's Mass for Four Voices. The piece was composed in 1592, a time when the Catholic Mass was outlawed in England. As a result, it had to be performed in small, private settings. The café may not be such a stretch after all. Video: Amy Pearl; Sound: Edward Haber; Text & production: Brian Wise
