The second round of the 2025 World Cup from Loudenvielle, France, produced some of the fastest racing we've seen in recent memory and was (somehow) filled with more funny drama than the first round in Poland. But it turns out a dry, straight track makes for iconic Hail Mary race runs, and the UCI/Warner Bros/Discovery not knowing how to enforce their own rules makes for good podcasting banter. We had fun this week chatting about the ongoing #polegate disputes, Dak's panic after watching racing from the sideline and rushed last-minute prep before Leogang, the Henry Keifer situation, the Stan Nisbet situation, Ronan showing why we ride with tires on our rims, track safety and the need for more turns, and most importantly, the tightness of riding pants. We have been treated to some iconic racing thus far this season, and Leogang this weekend will surely be exciting. Oh, what could have been! After a long stint in the hot seat after laying down a time that bested the season's biggest names, the last man down the hill squashed our tall bar savior's time (and the rest of the field). We were filled with mixed emotions as reality set in that we'd have to wait a little longer to see Dak win his first World Cup, but what a treat to watch Ammuary Pierron piece together a historic run that cemented his return to the top of the sport. We chatted a lot about the wet, slippery conditions that made Val di Sole particularly difficult this year. Dak weighs in on where Amaury made up so much time and how he adapted his bike for the steep, technical track. Why are time gaps always so big down the Black Snake, and how much Dak made in bonuses from his 2nd place finish. We also cruise the results sheet from each class, dissecting who had standout riders and where overalls stand going into the fifth round of the year in Les Gets. A track on the circuit that always provides dramatic, legendary race runs, this year at Leogang was fairly uneventful. A business as usual World Cup, you could say. Rain throughout the week provided some of the most changing and challenging conditions hit the #notabikepark track, with the lower woods being the deciding factor on race day. There was exciting racing across each category, highlighted by a dominating victory in both women's fields, an upset in the Junior men's race, and another elite men's podium filled with new and returning names. With a tight turnaround heading into Val di Sole this weekend (link), reigning in our co-host extraordinaire Dakotah Norton took longer than usual. In 2002, USA Wrestling launched the first Junior Women's Freestyle National Championships and the tournament joined the four men's divisions in Fargo, North Dakota. The fifth tournament in Fargo would feature just over 100 young women. One of those first champions was Michigan's Brandy Green, who then was known as Brandy Rosenbrock. Green was one of the first two women to ever win multiple titles in Fargo, joining Oregon's Samantha Lang as two-timers with their championships in 2003. Green also competed at the 2004 Olympic Team Trials as part of the first group of women who wrestled for a chance to represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games. Now currently the head women's coach at Limestone University in Gaffney, South Carolina, Green looks back on what the experience meant for her and what her experiences have done to help her train and coach the next generation of wrestlers as they compete on the mats in Fargo and have actual bonafide college wrestling opportunities where they were few and far between when Green was coming out of high school. Maureen Griffin decided to start fencing foil at age 14 when she quit the swim team and her dad told her she had 24 hours to find a new sport. Four years later she came to the US on a fencing scholarship at the University of Wisconsin. After her retirement from fencing in 1988, she came back two years later as an epée fencer, eventually earning a spot on the Canadian National Team. Maureen moved to the west coast in 1995 because it was an epée hotspot and seriously focused on her training in San Francisco. That led to a Bronze medal that year in Team Women’s Epée at the PanAmerican Games. She lost her berth at the Olympic Games in 1996 by a very small margin and talks about how she overcame that disappointment. Maureen’s transition to coaching started in foil, moved to epée, and culminated with a trip to Hungary to study under legendary Laszlo Szabo. She served as the Junior Women’s Epée Coach from 2008-2013. Maureen has been the owner of Golden Gate Fencing Club in San Francisco for 20 years. She works tirelessly to build a positive team culture there and encourages a healthy competitive environment amongst the athletes. During this interview you’ll hear how she does that, as well as her views on the difference between losing and being beaten on the fencing strip. Tune in today to hear the fencing and coaching career of an extraordinary woman: Maureen Griffin.

Cathy King keeps on curling.  Growing up in Edmonton, she played many sports. Winter evenings included time spent around the dinner table discussing curling strategy with the whole family.  Older brothers Robb and Chris won the 1974 Canadian School Boys and when Cathy skipped her team to a successful National Junior Womens Championship in 1977, curling appeared to be near the top of her list.  After a repeat win in 1978, the only thing missing was a World Championship, but that wouldn't be available to Junior Women for another decade.  A few years out of juniors, Cathy got married, had kids, and life seemed to hold her back from reaching those previous levels of success.  She continued to practice and focus on the game however, and after knocking on the door a few times, Cathy finally won Alberta and reached the Scott Tournament of Hearts in 1995.  Expectations were low, but a hot streak that included 5 games in 27 hours led her squad from 2 tie-breakers to the brink of a Canadian Championship, losing in the last end of a 6-5 defeat at the hands of Manitoba's Connie Laliberte.  Cathy would return to the Scotties 6 more times, including a dramatic extra end victory over Ann Merklinger in the 1998 finals.  The World Championship would elude her that season, but she would return to the International stage as a Canadian Senior Champion and take the gold medal at the Worlds in 2013. Cathy shares stories from her early years as a junior, through the struggles and heartbreaks, including battles with vertigo, to her eventual success, and becoming the first skip to capture the Canadian Curling Triple Crown of a Junior, a Scotties (or Brier) and Senior Championship.  There are a few extra stories included after our talk as well.   You can read about Cathy in "Curling: The History, The Players, The Game" by Warren Hansen, and "The Stone Age" by Vera Pezer.  In our conversation, Cathy talks about her father Gord, and here's a link to an Edmonton Journal article by Jeff Holubitsky for more information about his incredible story.

Victoria Hayward was born in Toronto before her family moved to Mountain View, California.  She went on to star as a member of the Mountain View High School softball team from 2007 to 2010, earning Most Valuable Player honors in her final season. She was also a member of the Sorcerers club team that won the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) 18-and-under Gold National Championship in 2009.  In 2009 she became the youngest player to join the Canadian Senior Women's National Team at the age of 16. Hayward completed her senior season at the University of Washington in 2014, capping a four-year NCAA Division 1 career by being named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team.  She finished the 2014 season among the Pac-12 league leaders with a .414 batting average (5th), a .513 on-base percentage (5th) and 28 stolen bases (1st), while also maintaining a 1.000 fielding percentage as an outfielder.  Following her senior season, she was drafted by the Pennsylvania Rebellion in the fifth round (19th overall) at the 2014 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) draft. After joining the Senior Women's National Team in 2009, Hayward won a bronze medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2010 ISF Women's World Championship in Caracas, and went on to compete as a member of both the Junior and Senior Women's National Teams in 2010 and 2011.  As a member of the Junior Women's National Team, she won silver medals at the 2010 Pan American Qualifier in Bogota and the 2011 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, and finished fifth at the 2011 ISF Junior Women's World Championship in Cape Town.  She also competed as a member of the Senior Women's National Team at the 2009 and 2013 Pan American Softball Championships, as well as the 2011 Pan American Games – winning silver at all three of those events – and also competed at the 2012 and 2014 ISF Women's World Championships. There was a lot to take in on Tuesday at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota. We had Greco-Roman Phase II World Team Trials, Junior Greco-Roman Finals and Junior Women’s freestyle finals. Tuesday’s the craziest day here in Fargo, so sit back, relax and take your time, because it’s time for another Fargo Update coming up NOW on the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. LET’S START BY GETTING INTO ALL OF THIS STUFFThe Army's Justin Lester made his seventh U.S. World Team with two straight victories over Pat Smith of the Minnesota Storm in the Phase II Trials at 71kg. Lester, a World bronze medalist in 2006 and 2007, made things look easy in the first match of the best-of-three series, teching Smith 9-0 in 54 seconds. The second time around, it was a bit more of a battle as Lester got past Smith 2-1. Smith took the early lead with a pushout, but Lester matched him with a pushout of his own to effectively take the lead. Smith tried pushing the pace, but Lester tacked on a pushout with 32 seconds remaining to cement his lead and join the team heading to Uzbekistan in September. Joe Rau, who won a Junior Greco-Roman title for Illinois back in 2009, earned a spot on the U.S. World Team at 80kg after defeating 2012 Olympian Ben Provisor in two straight matches. Rau beat Provisor in the first match 1-0 with the decisive point coming on Provisor's second caution. In the second match, Rau, wrestling for the Minnesota Storm, used a pushout from a front headlock position in the first period. It would be the only point of the match as Rau would again win 1-0. It's Rau's second World Team berth of the summer. He recently competed at the World University Championships in Hungary at 85kg.JUNIOR GRECOCalifornia's Randon Miranda started out the night with a 14-4 techincal fall victory over Connecticut's Zack Murillo at 100 pounds. Miranda captured the second leg of the Junior Triple Crown. He won the Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year. Miranda led from start to finish, but got in trouble early after Murillo stepped over and put Miranda to his back. Miranda built a 7-2 lead until Murillo stepped over again, but Miranda avoided trouble and then scored three more takedowns to ice the victory.Arizona's Danny Vega won the state's ninth overall Junior Greco-Roman title with a 7-2 victory over Todd Small of Georgia at 106. At the Cadet level, Vega as second in Greco last year and won a freestyle championship. Like Miranda, he's still eligible to win the Triple Crown after winning Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year. Idaho's Dorian Sapien took home the title at 113 pounds with a 12-6 victory over Kansas' Corbin Nirschl. Sapien fell behind early, but hit a big four-point armspin that changed the pace of the match. Sapien won Idaho's ninth all-time Junior Greco-Roman title. Skyler Petry's stellar summer continued as the Minnesota native topped New Jersey's Anthony Cefolo 2-1 at 120 pounds. Petry scored a takedown early in the match and only gave up a late point. Petry, bound for the University of Minnesota, becomes Minnesota's 34th Junior Greco-Roman champion. Utah's Taylor Lamont wrestled up to the Junior level and came away with a national title. Lamont doesn't compete on Sundays, and he's still in the Cadet age group, so since the Junior tournament started on Monday, he competed there and it didn't seem to make much difference. At 126 pounds Lamont fell behind early to Kegan Calkins of Illinois, but after Lamont tied it up with a takedown, he launched Calkins with a nice reverse lift for five points. It's all the scoring that would take place in Lamont's 7-2 win. New York's William Koll picked up a title with a punishingly dominant 11-0 victory at 132 pounds over New Jersey's William Kui. Koll countered a headlock attempt to get a takedown, then hit a big five pointer to build a 7-0 lead. Koll then finished Kui off scoring a takedown and a two-point gutwrench. Koll is the son of Cornell head coach Rob Koll.
