In this podcast from his series looking at some of what's new and notable in iOS 15, Thomas Domville Shows us Live Text, a feature that allows you to quickly recognize text and select, copy, paste, and lookup in both the Camera and Photos app. Here's how Apple describes Live Text: Live Text uses on-device intelligence to recognize text in a photo and allow users to take action. For example, users can search for and locate the picture of a handwritten family recipe, or capture a phone number from a storefront with the option to place a call. With the power of the Apple Neural Engine, the Camera app can also quickly recognize and copy text in the moment, such as the Wi-Fi password displayed at a local coffee shop. With Visual Look Up, users can learn more about popular art and landmarks around the world, plants and flowers found in nature, breeds of pets, and even find books. Live Text is only available on devices which have an A12 Bionic chip or better. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/elgordocircuito/message
On today's show we run through some of the new features on the recently announced AppleTV, look at the tradeoff of using an indoor TV outdoors in a protected environment, and we have a short review of the Wyze V3 outdoor camera. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. New AppleTV From the Press Release - Apple announced the next generation of Apple TV 4K, delivering high frame rate HDR with Dolby Vision and connecting customers to their favorite content with the highest quality. At the heart of the new Apple TV 4K is the A12 Bionic chip that provides a significant boost in graphics performance, video decoding, and audio processing. And with an all-new design, the Siri Remote makes it even easier to watch shows and movies on Apple TV with intuitive navigation controls. Together with tvOS — the most powerful TV operating system — Apple TV 4K works seamlessly with Apple devices and services to magically transform the living room in ways that everyone in the family will love. Improved Video Experiences With A12 Bionic, Apple TV 4K now supports high frame rate HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Dolby Vision video, enabling fast-moving action at 60 frames per second (fps) to play more smoothly and appear more lifelike than ever before. Apple is working with leading video providers around the world, including FOX Sports, NBCUniversal, Paramount+, Red Bull TV, and Canal+, as they begin to stream in high frame rate HDR. And with high frame rate support in AirPlay, videos shot on iPhone 12 Pro can be displayed in full 60-fps Dolby Vision on the new Apple TV 4K. Color Balance Through an innovative color balance process, Apple TV works with iPhone and its advanced sensors to improve a television's picture quality. Apple TV uses the light sensor in iPhone to compare the color balance to the industry-standard specifications used by cinematographers worldwide. Using this data, Apple TV automatically tailors its video output to deliver much more accurate colors and improved contrast — without customers ever having to adjust their television settings. Siri Remote The all-new Siri Remote features an innovative clickpad control that offers five-way navigation for better accuracy, and is also touch-enabled for the fast directional swipes Apple TV users love. The outer ring of the clickpad supports an intuitive circular gesture that turns it into a jog control — perfect for finding a scene in a movie or show. And with its one-piece aluminum design, the new Siri Remote fits more comfortably in a user's hand. The new Siri Remote also has a power button that controls a TV's power, and another for mute, making it the only remote needed while enjoying TV. Using Siri, customers can easily search for specific shows or movies, control smart home accessories, check sports scores or the weather, and much more. Siri now works on Apple TV in Austria, Ireland, and New Zealand, joining the 13 countries and regions that already support Siri. Pricing and Availability The new Apple TV 4K will be available starting at $179 (US) Customers can order the new Apple TV 4K beginning Friday, April 30, with availability beginning in the second half of May in more than 30 countries and regions, including the US. Apple TV HD with the new Siri Remote will be available for $149. The new Siri Remote will be available separately for $59, and is compatible with the previous-generation Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. Furrion Unveils Newest Line Of Outdoor 4K TVs On a recent show a listener asked us about installing a TV on his deck. The deck was protected from direct contact with the elements. We suggested using a regular indoor TV stating that it would shorten the lifespan of the TV but the cost saving would allow for a new TV every few years which would bring upgrades along the way. Today we can quantify the cost comparison as Furrion unveiled a new line of outdoor TVs. The Aurora® Partial Sun 4K UHD LED Outdoor TV and the Aurora® Full Shade 4K UHD LED Outdoor TV. For our listener, since his TV would be on his covered deck, our comparison will be with the Full Shade 4K UHD. But for completeness we'll include the pricing for the Partial Sun TV as well. From Furrion's Press Release: Furrion Aurora TVs are weatherproof in all conditions, and are engineered to withstand the harsh effects of UV rays, rain, snow, dirt, insects, and humidity. Their weatherproof housing and IP54 rating mean the Aurora is built to last, and the weather-resistant media bay offers even more protection for inputs and outputs. Even the remote control features an IP64 waterproof rating, great for areas with pools. Aurora® Partial Sun 4K UHD LED Outdoor TV Designed for partially shaded outdoor living areas like patios, decks and yards Increased brightness up to 750 nits and an anti-glare LCD screen give you an excellent picture in partially sunny areas Sizes: Available in 43”, 49”, 55” and 65” Pricing: $1,499.99 (43”), $1,999.99 (49”), $2,699.99 (55”), $3,399.99 (65”) Aurora® Full Shade 4K UHD LED Outdoor TV Designed for fully-shaded outdoor living areas like covered patios or screened gazebos Increased brightness up to 400 nits and an anti-glare LCD screen give you an excellent picture in partially shaded areas Sizes: Available in 43”, 49”, 55” and 65” Pricing: $1,299.99 (43”), $1,599 (49”), $1,999.99 (55”), $2,799.99 (65”) Analysis Let's go with a 50” TV. Costco has models starting at $340 (Hisense 50" R6 Series - UHD LED) or a Vizio for $430 (Vizio 50" M-Series - 4K Quantum LED). There are TCLs that are in the middle so for this exercise we'll say you can pick up a 50 inch TV for $400. That means for the price of a 50 inch Full Shade Aurora you can buy four regular TVs. Depending on your local climate that can really save you money. Of course this only works for a protected installation that is not in direct weather. Wyze Cam v3 After receiving Chuck's email we decided to spend the whopping $31.84 including shipping and tax to test out the Wyze Cam v3. This is a very quick review. Essentially the camera is fantastic. In a side by side comparison with our Eufy cameras the Wyze had a sharper and more detailed picture with a spectacular night vision feature. Wyze offers cloud storage for free but only a 12 second clip that rolls over every 14 days. You can upgrade to a plan that has longer recordings and more storage for about $25 a year. If you don't want to store in the cloud the camera supports a micro SD card with recordings available over the internet. The camera is IP65 weather resistant. Quite frankly the camera is amazing for only $30 shipped! Setup was simple. Like pretty much all the other cameras you download the app and add the camera. The app is easy to navigate and functional. All the controls and settings are easily accessed. The only complaint Ara had was that the camera is not supported by Homekit. Actually, the only platform that it supports is Alexa. Bottom line, the days of expensive cameras are done. If you are a manufacturer trying to sell a camera for more than $50, be prepared to drop your prices. If Wyze ever supports Homekit, all Ara's outdoor cameras will be replaced at a total cost of $120!

Apple's vehicle project, focused on building an autonomous Over the course of the last several years, Internal strife, leadership issues, and other problems impacted the car project and 2016 rumors even suggested Apple shelved plans for a car, but Apple has overcome development problems and still plans to develop a consumer-facing car. The Apple Car project has changed leadership several times and hundreds of employees have been laid off during the course of development, but it is now under the leadership of John Giannandrea, Apple's AI and machine learning chief, who took over the reins from Bob Mansfield after Mansfield retired in 2020. Over the course of the last few years, rumors indicated Apple had shifted its focus to autonomous driving software, but Apple in August 2018 rehired Tesla engineer Doug Field, leading to speculation that Apple was again be exploring a car option. In December 2020, we learned that Apple is indeed still working on a full car, and right now, plans to release a vehicle in three to six years. Reuters has said Apple is aiming for 2024, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes a car won't launch until 2025 to 2027 at the earliest. Apple may work with a manufacturing partner to produce the vehicles, and is developing next level battery technology to extend range and efficiency. Apple has held discussions with Hyundai and other automobile manufacturers, and will allegedly ink a deal by March with an aim to start production in 2024. Apple's car team is said to be aiming to create a self-driving vehicle that would let a user input their destination and be driven there with "little or no other engagement." Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the car will be Apple's "next star product" with Apple able to offer "better integration of hardware, software and services" than potential competitors in the automotive market, with Apple-designed chips manufactured by TSMC. An EETimes analyst suggests the chip could be called the "C1" and could perhaps be based on the A12 Bionic processor. Kuo has said that Apple's initial vehicle chassis could be based on Hyundai's E-GMP electriv vehicle (BEV) platform. The Apple Car is likely to be marketed as a "very high-end" model or "significantly higher" than a standard electric vehicle. In June of 2017, Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke publicly about Apple's work on autonomous driving software, confirming the company's work in a rare candid moment. Apple doesn't often share details on what it's working on, but when it comes to the car software, it's harder to keep quiet because of regulations. "We're focusing on autonomous systems. It's a core technology that we view as very important. We sort of see it as the mother of all AI projects. It's probably one of the most difficult AI projects actually to work on." -- Apple CEO Tim Cook on Apple's plans in the car space. Since early 2017, Apple has been testing self-driving vehicles on public roads in California, using several 2015 Lexus RX450h SUVs leased from Hertz. The SUVs have been spotted on the streets of Cupertino host of sensors and cameras as Apple prepares its self-driving software. Apple has held talks with four suppliers of LiDAR sensors that are smaller, more affordable, and more easily mass produced than current LiDAR systems, which are too bulky and expensive for use in mass produced vehicles. Apple is aiming for a "revolutionary design" that could potentially be used in a future autonomous vehicle. Over the course of the last several years, there's been a lot of back and forth on the Apple Car project. Early rumors said that Apple would build a full car, but then leadership struggles, development issues, and internal strife led to rumors that the project had been scaled back and would instead focus on self-driving technology. I'm so excited to see the Apple Card in India about the Apple car is a very very very very very very very very important thing in India if that once successful means done everything done ok --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

I'd love for you to do that again, Craig Peterson.com/itunes. It's pretty quick and easy to do now. [00:01:00] Intel has it's been around for a long time. Intel used to be a memory company. And they got approached to make some processors. If you ask me, they've never been a particularly great processor company. I think they made some fundamental mistakes. They've basically stuck with an architecture that's 40 years old now. I think that's really handicapped them. They are doing a lot of work in what's known as the SIS arena which are these complex chips versus what's happening now everywhere else. Look at that Android phone that you have, those Android phones are not using any of these Intel chips. They might use a well an RF chip, radio-frequency chip. But they're not using any of the main core type stuff. [00:02:00] Many of the most phone makers now are using like the Qualcomm snapdragons they're using. Samsung has her Exynos. Kirin has one they're high silicone. These are all mobile processors that are used for a lot of different devices that are out there. Of course, Apple has their own too. Right now. I think it's the A12 Bionic is what they call it. Very, very good processors. And they are using a completely different concept from Intel. They are using a concept of the more simple, the design of the processor, the faster we're going to be able to make it. So they let the compilers that compile the software to make the binary executable that you're using. [00:03:00] They had the compilers do most of the work. And you look at the statistics between Cisco and risk. And, uh, you could argue in some cases is faster, but overall the risk is faster. Plus these risk chips tend to be a lot cheaper. Now, part of what we have in the chip Wars is the need for speed and also so less consumption of electricity. And lower consumption. Electricity also typically means lower temperatures. So you don't have to cool them as much. So if you have a mobile device, you wanted to use less power and have less heat so that you can run it longer, right? Wouldn't you rather have a laptop that ran for 1224 hours than one that just ran for an hour or two? [00:04:00] So way back when Apple switched from IBM's PowerPC design. Okay. Over to Intel chips and one, yeah, the main reasons it did that is because at IBM not delivering on low power consumption processors. Now the power chips are. Amazing amazing. And if you have a server or a desktop and that your software will run on power chips, there is nothing better. I'm just shocked and amazed running Linux on some of these machines, right? Uh, IBM has done an amazing job with that processor, but because you couldn't put one of these processors, IBM power processors reasonably into a laptop, Intel said, Hey, um, You either have to cut the power consumption and the heat generation, or we're going to have to move. [00:05:00] And IBM did not meet the deadlines. I'm making a very long story kind of short. And so Apple said goodbye and ended up switching over to Intel who could deliver the power consumption. Apple had been asking for not, not as good as they had asked for, but much, much better than the power PC. As time has gone on these chips are getting faster because of the types of processes that are involved in the manufacturing. There is. Just to simplify everything. Uh, the thickness of it, the wafers and of the layers makes a very big distance difference because the distance that the electricity has to flow inside of the chip equates to the speed of the chip and can also equate to the resistance the chip provides, which means more heat and more power. [00:06:00] So you want these chips to be smaller and smaller and have smaller and smaller innards if you will. So, uh, Intel has been promising for a long time that it would have what is called seven-nanometer parts. Well, um, Intel has had just endless problems with. Manufacturing some of these chips. So back in 2013, Intel's original roadmap was just spent 25th, 2014, 2015 to come up with a 14-nanometer node and then moved to 10 nanometers in 2016, 17, but they had an endless string of problems and setbacks with this 10 nanometer. [00:07:00] So Intel ended up spending five years. With 14 nanometer nodes, which means. Again, more power consumption and more heat and not as fast. So in 2019, they started to deliver, it was kind of shaky here, 10 nanometers. So I don't want to get into this cause, you know, no, I can hear people kind of the brains tuning out a little bit on this and Intel still doesn't have 10 nanometers, desktop or server parts. And now what they really need is something to compete because AMD advanced micro devices whom I've liked for many, many years. Has really returned to another golden age. They had some amazing processors. AMD had 64-bit processors before Intel and Intel. When they came out with 64-bit processors had to be AMD compatible. That's how far behind Intel was? How was that for an embarrassment, right. Intel considering themselves. You know, the creator and the arbitrator of these 80 series, if you will, uh, chips that are out there, um, Having to follow the lead of their biggest competitors. You're in the marketplace. Very, very, very bad. [00:08:00] So AMD now has this, what they're calling Zen architecture, and their thread ripper core counts. It's just clean. Amazing, and MDs is even starting to get attention from laptop OEMs as well. Intel also missed out on the smartphone revolution. So they have been getting black guy after black, after black guy. And what's the latest Intel is being completely dumped by Apple. Apple has built its own design house, using these simpler designs, which are using a much tighter process than Intel has. They're much cheaper to build. They use less electricity, it goes on and on and on. So it Apple has his own arm design house for the iPhone and iPad. [00:09:00] It's going to be upscaling these arm chips to the Mac, laptops, and desktops. And we're going to see. Two of those models this year. So guess what people have been losing their jobs over at Intel? What a fiasco over there. It's just absolutely crazy. Right? When we come back, we've got a lot to talk about. Um, We'll talk a little bit about the Twitter hack and remote working here. Is it not working for you and your company? We'll talk about the likely reasons. Why so stick around. MONDAY On Monday Apple released a new iPad Air 3 and iPad Mini 5 iPad Air 3 The new iPad Air has a 10.5-inch Retain display, A12 Bionic chip, and first-generation Apple Pencil support. Performance-wise, it’s just as fast as the iPhone XS. This iPad replaces the older 10.5-inch iPad Pro that Apple’s been selling for $650 up until now $500 for the 64GB model iPad Mini 5 iPad mini now delivers three times the performance and nine times faster graphics. Improved Retina display with True Tone, wide color support, is 25 percent brighter than before. A12 Bionic processor first-generation Apple Pencil support Headphone jack! the same $399 price tag as the previous model. TUESDAY On Tuesday Apple gave some much needed spec bumps to the iMac, added better RAM and GPU options to the iMac Pro, and even dropped the prices on some of their high-end MacBook Pros! iMac iMac lineup has been updated with Intel's latest 8th-gen and 9th-gen Core processors, including a six-core 8th-gen Core i7 with Turbo Boost, and a monster eight-core 9th-gen Core i9 with Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz (for the 27-inch 5K iMac). Apple says the new i7 brings a 60% performance increase for the 21.5-inch iMac, and up to a 240% for the for new i9 iMac. Radeon Pro Vega graphics options are now available across the new iMac lineup, including Vega 20 for 21.5-inch models and Vega 48 for 27-inch models. Apple advertises up to 80 percent faster graphics performance compared to the previous iMac lineup. New RAM and storage options are also available. Base iMac STILL include a 5400RPM mechanical hard drive… Mac Pro now available with Vega 64X graphics and 256GB RAM Those with a need for speed can now equip the iMac Pro with an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64X graphics card and up to 256GB of RAM for the first time. But be prepared to break the bank Apple drops prices on some high-end MacBook Pros There’s good news for MacBook Pro buyers looking for a lot of storage: Apple has lowered the costs of its most-expensive SSD options. When upgrading your SSD, you can save $200 for the 2TB option, and $400 for the 4TB option. The bad news is that Apple didn’t change prices on any MacBook Pro SSDs that are 1TB or smaller. Putting a 1TB drive in a high-end 15-inch MacBook is still an extra $400 over the cost of a 512GB one, for example. The total package, with 256GB of RAM and everything else as standard, is $10,199. If you add every possible upgrade to the iMac Pro, not including software or a VESA Mount Adapter, it costs $15,699. WEDNESDAY New AirPods deliver hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ and better battery life Apple’s newest wireless buds are here with a brand new H1 chip that allows for hands-free “Hey Siri.” They also promise better battery life in between charges, and even faster connectivity. An optional Wireless Charging Case is also available, but it’s not cheap. AirPods 2 have the same $159 price tag, or $200 with the wireless charging case. The wireless case a la cart is $79. With New Unlimited Plan, MoviePass Swears It's Got Its Shit Together Thanks to MacDonald Ted for this glorious story. On Monday, MoviePass announced the new plan, which it is calling “Uncapped.” Under the Uncapped plan, subscribers can watch one 2D film a day, for $19.95 per month. A “limited time” offer gets you that same deal for just $9.95 per month with a one-year commitment. But can we trust MoviePass? Of course they’re playing games in their terms of service. A line in their user agreement gives MoviePass the right to throttle a user’s filmgoing options in the event that an individual’s use of the service has an adverse impact on “MoviePass’s system-wide capacity or the availability of the Service for other subscribers.”

If you want a next-as-in-X-generation iPhone but you don't want to pay a thousand or more bucks for it, you want an XR. iPhone XR — never mind what the R means, it's just a new letter for Apple, one before S, "racing" if you're into cars, "reflex" if you're into cameras, cool-sounding either way. It's everything you need in a next-as-in-X-generation iPhone, minus some bells and whistles... and the higher price tag. LCD instead of OLED display. Single instead of dual camera system. Haptic touch instead of 3D Touch. LTE Advanced and 2x2 MIMO instead of Gigabit and 4x4. Aluminum instead of steel bands. Back glass that's stronger than iPhone X but not quite as strong as iPhone XS. It does come in a range of fancy new finishes though: black, white, blue, yellow, coral orange, and Product (RED). And at that lower price — $250 lower — starting at $749. It does have the new edge-to-curved-edge design language, Face ID and the True Depth camera up front, the latest 12 megapixel, Smart HDR camera on the back, the industry-leading A12 Bionic chipset inside, wide stereo speakers on both ends, and dual SIM card support if one carrier and one number just isn't enough. So, what are you getting with iPhone XR and what are you giving up? I've spent the last week with a black iPhone XR, and here's what I've found. Even as long as Mike and Charles been exploring the techspace frontier, cadets, they still get surprised at how weird things can get. Apple let the moths out of its checkbook for a big acqui-hire, Google finally pulled the plug on its Plus (and tried to hide the cause of death), Australia's government gets Applesplained to, Facebook doubles down on bad security, the A12 Bionic smokes the Note 9 (in states where that's legal), and Kanye continues his Apple fantasies ... and this is all before they get to That Can't Be Right! Thankfully, some things still stay the same. Apple is releasing a ludicrously overpriced accessory, another company takes an Apple idea and runs with it, there's yet still more confirmation (yes, more) of new iPads, there's some cool new things in Apple's healthcare space, and some sweet deals on the latest iPhones (and the Note 9, if you prefer). Oh, and Bloomberg is still wrong. See? Comforting, reliable nuggets in a turbulent world. All this and a new Intel chip (yes, really!), CVS crying uncle and making Apple Pay official, dumb rumors to squash, CBC's Apple hit job to poke holes in, and Facebook makes a spy terminal for your grandma. Mike and Charles also take a look at the Luna Display device, fresh out of Kickstarter, and preview Apple's newest secret project: the iPlane 1 (though we hear they're just winging it). Get up on the tables, cadets, it's Improv Keynote Night on the Holodeck!

TechCentral — In the second episode of Cars & Gadgets, Duncan McLeod speaks to Nafisa Akabor about the new iPhone Xs from Apple. The Xs is one of three iPhone models Apple is introducing in 2018 -- the others being the supersized Xs Max and the "cheaper" Xr. In the podcast, Nafisa unpacks the key differences between the three models, whether iPhone X users should consider upgrading (short answer: absolutely not) and why, in a highly unusual move, Apple decided to discontinue last year's model. Duncan and Nafisa unpack Apple's new A12 Bionic chip and why the seven nanometer manufacturing process used is so important. They also chat about the Xs's camera system and what it can do that last year's model can't. Perhaps most importantly, they discuss the battery life of the latest model and discuss what's new in iOS 12. Also, they ask: is Apple pricing itself out of the market with the new models?
Another rich vein of news ore has been discovered on the mining colony Technopolis, cadets, but there's at least one strike that turned out to be fool's gold. Bloomberg had a two-year story blow up in their faces for numerous factual errors and jumping to conclusions, Microsoft brought out some sweet gear with the pricetag decimal in the wrong place, Samsung's main profits turn out to be from Apple, and speaking of Apple ... is their attempt to further lock down repairs to authorized service centers a good or bad thing? Mike and Charles also pass on a couple of PSAs about fixing a charging problem and a caution about the latest Windows 10 update (particularly for you Boot Camp users); marvel at the desktop-class benchmarks of the A12 Bionic; express some skepticism about Verizon's "5G," Uniloc's latest troll suit, Consumer Reports' ever-changing opinion on iPhone XS battery life, and Australia's blinkered attempt to mandate backdoors in smartphones. Raspberries are also handed out to the cable and ISP groups (and the Justice Department) for opposing California's net neutrality law, LTE speed "tests," and Kanye West's unhinged tweets. Also on the show this week: some iPhone XS teething issues, forced FaceID unlocking, Amazon's Fire Stick, HomePods launching in Spain and Mexico, "Beautygate" explained, Woz woes, Engineering Report, an electrical plug with a light in it and so much more. When you're working the tech salt mines, cadets, remember to take precautions against Space Gray Lung Disease!

A Cult Club. https://discord.gg/DbKApv iPhone XS Max: A condensed review https://www.cultofmac.com/579035/iphone-xs-max-review-condensed/ iPhone XS Max is fast, fast, fast Everything is very fast and responsive. Apps spring right open. Photos scroll without delay. Maps render without a hiccup. Everything is basically instantaneous, and it’s a joy. It’s all thanks to the A12 Bionic chip. Apple is so far ahead in mobile chips, it’s head-spinning. One benchmark shows the iPhone XS is faster than the new iMac Pro, a $5,000-plus pro workstation! It’s definitely not too big For such big phone, it doesn’t feel too big. Having used an X all last year, and liking it, I thought the Max would be too big. But it doesn’t feel as big as the old Plus iPhones used to iPhone XS Max camera The camera is excellent Especially the new Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control. The Max is less a phone, and more an advanced, near-DSLR camera with a cellular connection. The big screen is amazing The screen is so big and clear, there’s no need to take your laptop or iPad on flights any more. The Max will do nicely. It deserves to be caseless Despite dropping my old iPhone X numerous times, it has just a few scuffs and no cracked screen (it was, however, often in a case). But this time, because the Max is so thin, I’m going to try it caseless for a while. I’d like to enjoy Apple’s design for a change, without a bulky wrapping. (I know; I may regret this later.) iPhone XS selfie cam is so beautiful it spawned an ugly conspiracy theory https://www.cultofmac.com/579503/iphone-selfies-xs/ The iPhone XS and its front-facing camera are supposed to help its owners make better self-portraits. However, some think their iPhone selfies look better than they should Lewis Helsenteger, aka Unboxing Therapy, is calling it beautygate Users are taking to internet forums like Reddit to question whether Apple added an undisclosed beauty filter to the front-facing camera on the iPhone XS and XS Max. Some are even posting side-by-side selfies taken with an XS and older handset to make a case that the newest iPhone has more than deeper pixels and an improved portrait mode going for it. iPhone XS Max production cost is shockingly low https://www.cultofmac.com/579177/iphone-xs-max-production-cost-bill-materials-bom/ Analysis firm TechInsights did a teardown of the an iPhone XS Max with 256GB of storage. That’s reportedly the most popular version of Apple’s best selling handset. As part of its teardown, TechInsights estimated the cost for each component. The total? $443 Compared to the $1249 price tag for the product. So just 35 percent of the purchase price goes to pay for the actual hardware. Of course, the remaining $806 isn’t pure profit. The bill of materials (BoM) doesn’t cover Apple’s employee salaries, advertising, and other costs. Also, the BoM doesn’t include software, and iPhone and iPad sales have to cover the cost of developing iOS and its bundled software.
A pause before release of additional iOS devices could make sense for Apple. The A12 Bionic chip’s smaller size of 7 nanometers is a first. Apple has announced its next generation of iPhones, and one of them is by far the biggest iPhone yet. The two new models are called the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. They look almost identical to their predecessor, but there are two immediate differences: for one, they’re both available in gold, unlike last year; and more importantly, the XS Max is huge. It’s not just the biggest iPhone ever, it’s one of the biggest phones out there, period. In addition to the iPhone XS and XS Max, Apple also announced a lower-cost model that splits the difference in size, called the iPhone XR. You can read more about that in our other article — we’re going to focus on Apple’s two new flagships, the XS and XS Max, below. As with other -S years, this year’s iPhones are mostly defined by spec upgrades. That includes a display with better dynamic range, wider stereo sound from the speakers, and speed increases to Face ID. Water resistance has been improved on both models. And the processor is getting a big boost as well, using Apple’s newly unveiled A12 Bionic processor, a six-core chip that’s among the first in the industry to use a 7nm process. Tim Cook called the devices “by far the most advanced iPhone we have ever created.” But the real news this year is the introduction of the “Max” model, which has a huge 6.5-inch screen. That’s far bigger than the iPhone 8 Plus (5.5 inches) and bigger even than the Galaxy Note 9 (6.4 inches). It’s not as though Apple is jumping into unprecedented territory here, but it is leaping into a size class that, even in a world of large phones, is still considered fairly large. It’s an admission that large phones will continue to rule. And while it may have taken Apple a bit too long to catch on in years past, it’s happily jumping into the six-plus-inch fray as phones get ever larger. Because the iPhone XS and XS Max have a wider screen ratio than the traditional iPhone, neither phone will be quite as big as it sounds. The iPhone XS, for instance, which has the same 5.8-inch screen size as the iPhone X, is actually smaller than the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus. The XS Max is definitively larger than the other iPhones that came before it, but keep in mind that its extra screen size will come more from height than from additional width. That means it shouldn’t be much harder to hold than any Plus-sized iPhone. Apple also says that the XS and XS Max feature an all-new camera system, though the specs seem largely the same on a high level. The wide angle and telephoto rear cameras both still have 12-megapixel sensors with optical image stabilization; but the wide-angle camera now uses a new sensor with larger pixels, and the telephoto includes a wider aperture, so both cameras should do better in low light. The selfie camera on the front is supposed to be faster as well, but aperture and megapixel count haven’t changed. The bigger upgrade may be to the way these cameras take photos. Apple is introducing a new method called “Smart HDR” that sounds very similar to what Google does with the Pixel — it takes many photos and stitches them together into one properly captured image. That’s not altogether different than the HDR methods that Apple has used in the past, but this year’s sounds like it’s just doing more of all that. Which, if it works, is great. And for Google, it definitely works. Apple is also adding more options to its cameras’ portrait mode, which automatically isolates a subject and blurs out the background. You can now fine-tune those photos, even more, adjusting exactly how blurred the background is, which could let you make the effect a bit subtler. There’s another new feature that many people won’t notice, but could be make-or-break for buyers in some countries: dual SIM support. Both phones will support the use of two phone numbers and data plans, using a single physical SIM card and Apple’s integrated e-SIM. That means carriers will need to add support for the e-SIM in order for this to work (and many ha...

Apple has officially announced the iPhone XR, a new model that features a notched 6.1-inch LCD display and Apple’s Face ID system, similar to last year’s iPhone X. The new iPhone XR is a pretty significant upgrade for Apple, making the iPhone X’s design and features standard across the company’s latest line of phones. Apple is calling the 6.1-inch screen a “Liquid Retina” display, which offers a 1792 x 828 resolution at 326 PPI. That said, while the XR may look like a larger iPhone XS, there are a few compromises — the frame is aluminum, not stainless steel. There is IP67 water and dust protection, instead of the improved IP68 rating on the iPhone XS, and the screen is LCD, not OLED. There’s also no 3D Touch — instead, Apple is offering a new Haptic touch system, that offers similar feedback to the buttonless MacBook Pro trackpad. The iPhone XR features Apple’s latest A12 Bionic processor, just like the iPhone XS and XS Max — which Apple says offers improved speeds and performance over last year’s model, particularly for Apple’s “Neural Engine” AI processing. Despite its larger size, the iPhone XR features only a single rear camera, similar to the iPhone 8. The camera is a single 12-megapixel wide-angle camera — the same wide-angle camera as the XS. The single-camera does offer portrait mode, combining hardware and software to create the blurred background effect. As for the front-facing camera, it’s gotten an upgrade to Apple’s TrueDepth system from the iPhone XS, with a 7-megapixel sensor that allows for Face ID as well as features like portrait mode selfies, Animoji, and Memoji. It’s the same improved system as featured on the XS, with faster Face ID unlocking. On the battery life front, Apple is promising up to an hour and a half longer battery than the iPhone 8 Plus. The XR also will come in a variety of colors, with black, white, blue, coral, yellow, and red options available for the widest selection of chromatic choice since the iPhone 5C. But while the iPhone XR may feel like a less flashy version of the iPhone XS, it does come at a significant advantage: a much lower price. The iPhone XR starts at $749 for a 64GB model, with 128GB and 256GB models also available. Preorders will start on October 19th for the XR, which will ship a week later on October 26th. Apple announced 3 new phones today - the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and the iPhone XR. There doesn't seem to be any upgrades to the cameras in these phones, but what actually impressed me is the processing power. Apple has introduced the new A12 Bionic sensor with the next-generation Neural Engine. There is a 50% graphics boost, 15% performance core boost, and 50% lower power usage. Apple is now claiming 5 trillion calculations per second. This is going to make things really interesting if we can get past portrait mode and see what 3rd parties such as Adobe will do. Lightroom Mobile is getting closer to what the desktop version can do and this performance boost is a big game changer. Also noteworthy is the new Super Retina display, advanced facial recognition, depth control and of course… lots of bokeh.
