On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we unpack Apple's announcement of the all-new iPhone 16e. The iPhone 16e is the newest member of the iPhone lineup, offering a massive upgrade over the now-discontinued third-generation iPhone SE. It features a 6.1-inch OLED display with a notch for Face ID, a Ceramic Shield front cover, a USB-C port, and an Action button, and much more. It is powered by an A18 chip, enabling support for Apple Intelligence features, such as notification summaries and Genmoji for creating custom emoji. It also supports Visual Intelligence. In the iPhone 16e, the A18 chip has a 6-core CPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, but a binned 4-core GPU, making it slightly less powerful than the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. It also has IP68-rated water resistance, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.3. The device is equipped with an Apple-designed 5G modem called the C1, whereas other iPhones have a Qualcomm modem. Apple says its own modem is so power efficient that the iPhone 16e offers the longest battery life of any 6.1-inch iPhone model ever at up to 26 hours. On the back of the iPhone 16e is a single 48-megapixel Fusion camera, which provides a 2x "optical-quality" Telephoto option, according to Apple. On the front, there is a 12-megapixel camera with autofocus. The device does not have the Camera Control button that was introduced across the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup last year. It also lacks MagSafe. iPhone 16e supports Apple's satellite features. When outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, the iPhone 16e supports Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My via satellite. The device is available in white or black, and with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB storage capacities. In the U.S., pricing starts at $599. We talk through how the iPhone 16e compares to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, which sit at $699 and $799, respectively. We also contemplate what the discontinuation of the iPhone SE line means for the Apple Watch SE later this year. This week's EYE ON NPI is gland-tascular it's Amphenol's EMC Cable Glands (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/amphenol-ltw/emc-cable-glands) a two-in-one product that provides electrical connectivity for shielding as well as waterproofing for harsh and wet environments. Amphenol has 3 variants available, that will cover from 7 to 17mm cable diameters, and will provide IP68 protection when properly installed. Once makers finish their prototypes on the bench, it's time to turn a bunch of breakouts and breadboards into a finished PCB. That will clean up the loose jumper wires, but it still isn't ready for customer usage. For that we need an enclosure - something we chatted about in the last EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/11/21/eye-on-npi-wurth-elektronik-smd-spacers-eyeonnpi-digikey-digikey-adafruit/). Most enclosures for electronic devices that you'll encounter as a consumer are injection molded or maybe bent-metal, both are durable and fully custom, but have high setup costs which makes them only practical if you are planning on selling over 10,000 pieces. As an industrial designer, you may have to design for max lifetime of 500 pieces. In this case, it may be better to use an off-the-shelf enclosure such as those available from DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/category/boxes-enclosures-racks/27). These come in basic rectangular shapes, with mounting holes, and plastic/glass panels. But one problem is that if you want to attach external cabling like USB, Ethernet, CAN, or power, you need to cut perfect slots. Also, those connectors wont be weatherproof. Thus, cable glands! (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/cable-and-cord-grips) Cable glands are like four cable management (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_management) solutions in one: they provide strain relief, they allow clean cabling into an enclosure, they are weather or waterproof, and for the EMC series, they also provide ground shielding connectivity to an enclosure. Assembly and is pretty simple (https://learn.adafruit.com/air-quality-sensor-silo-house/assembly). First, drill a hole to match the datasheet template. Insert the first piece with the round gland part facing out. Lightly attach the mounting nut to keep it in place. Thread the cable through and tighten until the inner rubber gasket makes a seal against the cable. If properly installed, you'll get IP68 (https://www.iec.ch/ip-ratings) protection against dust and water. The only thing you have to check for is that the gland specification matches the outer diameter of the cable: too small and you'll crack the gland when tightening it, too large and the gland wont make a proper seal. There's three variants of the EMC Cable Glands (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/amphenol-ltw/emc-cable-glands), and all three are in stock right now for immediate shipment! If you don't need metal shielding, DigiKey stocks a wide variety of other cable glands from Amphenol (https://www.digikey.com/short/7w8vq5jj) for any size cable and enclosure. Order your glands today from DigiKey and they'll ship instantly so that you can start ruggedizing your next enclosure by tomorrow afternoon. See on DigiKey at https://www.digikey.com/short/7ddhh2dt

By Calvin Jones With its Zenfone line, Asus continues to fly the flag for those who want a phone they can comfortably carry in a pocket, and use with one hand, without compromising on flagship grade specs and performance. This year's Asus Zenfone 10 brings the range bang up to date with the latest high-performance internals, while retaining the same compact form-factor as last year's Zenfone 9, offering what is, in contemporary smartphone terms, a small device with few compromises. Asus Zenfone 10: High Spec Compact Phone reviewed Pros: Blistering all around performance Compact, pocket-friendly design that's easy to use one-handed Excellent build quality, a premium feel and full IP68 water and dust rating It STILL has a headphone jack! Cons: Software updates is the biggie here: Asus still only guarantees 2 Android updates plus a further 2 years of security updates, which isn't bad, but falls short of competitors Charging speed from the bundled 30 watt charger is adequate but no more Lack of autofocus on ultrawide and selfie cameras feels like a downgrade Asus Zenfone 10: Full Review The Zenfone 10 is more of a subtle refresh of last year's Zenfone 9 than a complete revamp. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the Zenfone 9 design had a lot going for it. The phone is the same width and height as its predecessor, but is a smidgen thicker at 9.4mm (from 9.1mm), and slightly heavier at 172g (from 169g). Those differences aren't noticeable in the hand though - and the phone feels every bit as comfortable and compact as last year's model. The Zenfone 10 sports a 5.9" AMOLED display with a maximum refresh rate of 144hz - which is great - but that higher refresh rate is only available on compatible mobile games through Asus's Game Genie game optimisation tool. For day-to-day stuff it tops out at the 120hz refresh rate found of the Zenfone 9 - which is ample for buttery smooth scrolling and interaction with the UI and whatever apps you're rocking. It's bright and vibrant too, with punchy colours, deep blacks and lots of contrast. Maxing out at 1,100 nits, the Zenfone's display is bright, but not as bright as some contemporary rivals. While it remains visible in bright sunlight, there are scenarios where you might notice it struggling. The panel is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, which should be able to take some abuse and be none the worse for wear, although a decent screen protector is always an option if you're concerned about knocks and scrapes. The back of the Zenfone 10 is a tactile, textured material very similar to that found on the Zenfone 9, but is described as an eco-friendly bio-based polycarbonate that's kinder to the environment. It doesn't feel remotely plasticky, and has a rough, almost paper or cardboard like texture. It feels great, has a unique look, provides plenty of grip, and while it might not feel quite as premium as glass, it is certainly a lot more robust. The Zenfone 10 comes in five colours: the new Aurora Green (like our review unit), Eclipse Red, Comet White, Starry Blue and Midnight Black - so there's plenty to choose from. Oh… and it still has a headphone jack. Hallelujah! Performance & Battery Life Under the hood the Zenfone 10 is powered by the latest flagship chipset from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, paired with 8GB or 16GB of blisteringly quick LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB or a whopping 512GB of super-fast UFX4.0 storage (we reviewed the 16/512GB variant). That makes the Asus Zenfone 10 not just one of the best performing compact phones out there… but according to benchmarks this little beast is one of the best performing phones on the market… period. There is no SD Card slot to expand that memory though, so you'll need to make sure you get enough on-board storage for your needs. The Zenfone 10 supports dual nano-sims, but there's no support for eSims… which is a shame. Day-to-day performance on the Zenfone 10 is exemplary. Scrolling through content, launching apps, switching between them, etc. ...

While technology has advanced in the past 50 years, one thing has not: the power outlet. Sure, we've added grounded outlets and the dreaded "polarized" outlet, but the actual concept has remained steady, for better or worse. VoltSafe is a company that has developed a new technology that replaces the traditional prong plug with something much safer and easier to use. This new plug is designed to be exposed and off and safe to the touch, and only after hot, neutral, and earth touch does it allow the power to flow through.VoltSafe's new power outletThe plug is easy to install, as all you need to do is remove the decorative faceplate on your outlet, push the adapter in, and reinstall the same two screws. There are also more decorative options available, such as the Google Home version, which is made out of wood, and even fabric versions. The plug also has a safety aspect, as it is much easier for those with physical disabilities to use. This is especially important, as the standard now dictates that everyone must use tamper-resistant outlets, which can be difficult for those with disabilities to use.Eliminate tripping hazardsOne of the most important applications of the VoltSafe technology is its ability to eliminate tripping hazards. Tripping hazards are a major problem in many areas, including homes, offices, and industrial environments. Tripping hazards can lead to serious injuries and even death, so it is essential to take steps to reduce them. The VoltSafe technology allows cables to be held in place with magnets, making it impossible for them to be pulled or tripped over. This eliminates the risk of tripping and makes it much safer to work in areas where cables are present.Furthermore, the VoltSafe technology is also customizable, allowing it to be tailored to different applications. This means that it can be used in a variety of different industries, from industrial applications to marine and robotics applications. This makes the technology even more versatile and useful, allowing it to be used in a variety of different situations.Granular energy monitoring in homesGranular energy monitoring in homes is becoming increasingly important as we strive to become more energy efficient and reduce our environmental impact. With the rise of smart home technology, we are now able to track our energy usage at a much more detailed level. The most interesting aspect of this new plug is that it allows for granular energy monitoring in homes. With this plug, you can track the energy consumption of each appliance in your home, giving you a much better understanding of your energy usage. This is especially useful for those with solar panels and battery packs, as you can easily monitor how much energy each appliance is consuming.Overall, granular energy monitoring in homes is becoming increasingly important as we strive to become more energy efficient. With this new technology, we can better understand our energy usage and take steps to reduce our environmental impact.Save money, save the environmentThe VoltSafe technology currently works by providing an adapter that plugs into existing outlets and allows for granular energy monitoring. This adapter can be used to monitor and control energy usage in the home, allowing for more efficient use of energy. The adapter also has a smart feature that allows it to be used safely, even in the dark. With this technology, we can easily switch off energy sources when not in use and schedule their use for off-peak hours. This helps us save money on our energy bills and helps to reduce our environmental impact by reducing our energy consumption.VoltSafe has also developed the technology for use in other applications, such as marine and robotics. For example, their connectors are IP68 rated, meaning they can be used in the water without worry of water damage. This can be used to autonomously charge electric boats, eliminating the need for manual docking and connecting.Additionally, VoltSafe has plans to make their technology available in more standard cables, such as computer cables and figure eights. This would make it easier to replace existing cables with the VoltSafe technology and make it even more accessible.Overall, the VoltSafe technology is a great way to save money and reduce our environmental impact.
Huawei Technologies has officially launched its flagship Mate50 Pro smartphone in South Africa, and the company's Akhram Mohamed is in the studio to tell TechCentral's audience all about it. Mohamed, who is vice president of operations at Huawei Consumer Business Group South Africa, unpacks the key features of the Mate50 Pro, including its Ultra Aperture XMAGE camera system and Kunlun Glass, which greatly enhances screen drop resistance – and we put it to the test rather dramatically in this episode of TCS Impact Series. The smartphone, available through network operators or the Huawei online store, features a distinctive new “Space Ring” design for the rear camera system and comes in two different types of rear cover: silver or black glass, or a premium orange vegan leather. And, no, thanks to US sanctions on China, there is no official Google Mobile Services support for the phone – but Mohamed explains in the interview why it's now easy to access apps and services through Huawei's AppGallery. Other key features of the new Mate50 Pro include: * IP68-rated water resistance; * 6.74-inch Huawei FullView Display with a screen resolution of 2 616x1 212 pixels and a high refresh rate of 120Hz and 1 440Hz PWM dimming to reduce flickering and relieve eye fatigue * A 4 700mAh battery, despite a slim-body design; * 66W fast-charging via cable or 50W wireless fast-charging; and * Low-battery Emergency Mode that activates when the battery level falls to 1%, with SuperEnergy Boosting that allows the Mate50 Pro to extend standby time by three hours, or 12 minutes of call time. The Huawei Mate50 Pro is available in South Africa from all network providers and is priced from R24 999 for the 256GB and R26 999 for the 512GB version. TechCentral

This week's EYE ON NPI is from a supplier that will challenge your expectations! It's Challenge Electronics' IP68/IP65 Waterproof Battery Holders (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/challenge-electronics/ip68-ip65-waterproof-battery-holders) A series of durable, waterproof battery cases that will do great at powering your board even in intense dusty and wet conditions! Challenge Electronics' IP-rated battery holders provide a low-profile form factor with a watertight seal. Designed for AA and AAA batteries, these holders feature a sleek and easy-to-integrate design ensuring waterproof mounting under the harshest environments to save time in the design cycle. A lot of electronic devices these days are designed to be sealed plastic enclosures (https://www.ifixit.com/smartphone-repairability) - and if they are battery powered, the battery is a LiPoly that is tucked inside and recharged. But there's a lot to be said for the common AA and AAA batteries. These are available anywhere around the world, instantly recognizable, and come in various temperature grades and recharability. For user-or-field replacement, or in use of extreme temperatures, they've still got a place in product design. The down-side is that battery cases (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4779) are often plastic-retained clips that allow dust, humidity, and spilled-diet-coke in, which can cause icky corrosion to the steel or tin terminals. This Flickr image (https://www.flickr.com/photos/sometoast/3242192055) shows a similar self-corroding affect, but having dampness won't help! Challenge's battery holders are compact, but have 4 screws for secure closure and a built-in gasket that will get you IP65-level sealing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code). That means fully dust-tight and water-proof to jets of water. Note this doesn't mean you can dunk it underwater - for that you'd need IP67 or IP68 - these are better for outdoor use or in some industrial settings where there may be liquids flying around. Challenge Electronics makes Waterproof Battery Holders (https://www.digikey.com/short/8nw43fr8) in three varieties, with AA and AAA sizes. All have the same IP65 rating. If we had to pick one, the 3xAA will give you a good 2500-4000mAh and 3.6V to 4.5V nominal, great for powering a 3.3V LDO project, and AA's are the most common battery. All three types are available right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment. Book and order today and it will ship immediately so you can have it in your hand tomorrow afternoon.

Welcome to this month's GPS Training podcast, it's our 22nd episode. Today we Tom, from Garmin, Ian from GPS training also myself, Jon, from GPS Training So, without further ado let's get on with today's podcast …… It's our 22nd podcast. In today's podcast look at the following things – · Time - 1 min 30 seconds - We talk over the waterproof classifications different GPS units get, and believe me we had plenty of fun doing this as we submerged GPS units in water for the duration of the chat. · Time - 17 min 5 seconds - We talk over the changes to the handheld GPS marketplace with the advent of the Garmin GPSMAP66s · Time - 23 min 5 seconds - And then we have Ian's FAQ's, both Garmin and SatMap and for the first time ever we have a FAQ for those of you wearing a Garmin GPS watch Next thing we have this month's podcast is a chat Tom, from Garmin about the some of the standards that some of the navigational products we use are tested to All Garmin products IPX 7 What is IPX rating (waterproof rating) - International Protection Marking, IEC standard 60529, sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection Marking, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion (body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures So let's put the unit to the test then – so we can submerse them for the duration of the test X - relates to the - Solid particle protection - indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects X - means there is no data available to specify a protection rating with regard to this criteria. 7 – relates to - Immersion, up to 1 m depth - Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Test duration: 30 minutes - you can watch it online here Tested with the lowest point of the enclosure 1000 mm below the surface of the water, or the highest point 150 mm below the surface, whichever is deeper. SatMap Active 20 - IP68 waterproof & IK7 impact rating 6 - means - Dust tight (Garmin get an x for this – it does not relate to?) - No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). A vacuum must be applied. Test duration of up to 8 hours based on air flow. 8 - Immersion, 1 m or more depth - Test duration: agreement with manufacturer Depth specified by manufacturer, generally up to 3 m IK rating (Solely SatMap refer to this) - where “XX” is a number from 00 to 10 indicating the degrees of protection provided by electrical enclosures (including luminaires) against external mechanical impacts IK07 Protected against 2 joules impact - Equivalent to impact of 0.5 kg mass dropped from 400 mm above impacted surface. Garmin have tested the GPSMAP66s to the following standard - MIL STD 810G ruggedness for thermal, shock and water performance To find out more about the GPS units we have available from GPS training please go to gpstraining.co.uk – click on – GPS Store – then click on Handheld GPS Units 2 - We talk over the changes to the handheld GPS marketplace with the advent of the Garmin GPSMAP66s 3 – Ian's FAQ's Welcome Ian back to the Podcast to talk over some of his FAQ's, the frequently asked questions he has been asked on his courses over the past month. This month we don't just have a FAQ for both Garmin and SatMap handheld units but we also have a FAQ for wearables, these are wrist based GPS devices. Garmin – with a Topo Pro map card inserted in a GPS, if while in a National Park, why does a GPS with Topo Europe mapping route in a different way to a GPS without Topo Europe mapping and how do you override it? As mentioned, I had this on the last Clayton course where two g...
Apple's Sept 12 event had a Mission: Impossible theme w/ cool #healthtech (Slip/Fall detection, FDA-approved ECG) and improved specs (A10 bionic, 7nm, IP68). But it felt like a really, really polite political rally w/ lots of applause but little action. Here's our take on the Good (solid incremental improvements & healthcare focus), the Bad (not much breakthrough or disruptive), and the Who Really Cares About the Color aspect of the event. Plus our Fast Five: EU's fine fine strategy for combating terrorist propaganda; AI's role in transforming organ donations; The risk of cameras invading AirBnB; The FCC's "let's just slow things down" move with the T-Mobile/Sprint merger; and Facebook's Rosetta - extracting text from images! Our Tech Bites this week: Have Crypto Tourists (smaller, retail investors) decided to pack up and go home? After a 70% market fall in crypto currency, it sure feels like it. Plus our humorous attempt to guess what Samsung, Huawei & others will do to counter Apple's attempt to polish its products up a bit. 2016 TWICE VIP Award Nominations The VIPs are TWICE's (This Week In Consumer Electronics, a weekly trade magazine for professionals in the consumer electronics field) annual products awards, and only retailers and distributors can vote to honor the products that have made the biggest difference in their business. With both formats, LG makes it easy for consumers to choose a premium TV with the confidence that they won't miss content that becomes available exclusively in either format. The LG SIGNATURE OLED TV reproduces the most lifelike images of any television, while offering a truly unique design. The OLED65G6 boasts an impossibly slim profile, picture-on-glass design, redesigned stand and miniscule bezels. With LG's latest webOS 3.0 Smart TV platform, users can enjoy an intuitive interface with lightning-quick transitions between broadcast TV, streaming services and external devices, and stream 4K HDR content from services like Amazon Video, Netflix and VUDU and additional content from streaming services and IPTV channels.
