Continuing into our sporadic dive into adult animation, we talk about an often forgotten gem of a Pre-9/11 world in the form of Home Movies. This episode also marks the beginning of discussions on people like Loren Bouchard of Bob's Burgers fame, voice actor greats like H. Jon Benjamin, and further elaboration on the beautiful mess that is Adult Swim. We hope you enjoy!
“Handsome Ransom” (October 25, 2009) Let's say this at the top: We are both fans in general of The Venture Bros, but this extremely homosocial show has a tendency to tiptoe up to being full-on gay and then laughing it all off as a joke. It's a product of its time, and even explicitly gay characters like The Alchemist and Shore Leave don't get their own episodes. So when it comes to picking one installment of the Adult Swim series that comes closest, we had to go with the one with Captain Sunshine, which sort of works but also makes the mistake of approaching pedo humor in the same manner it did gay humor. And that's kind of a fuck-up? Warning: Despite the presence of Brock Samson the art, Brock does not appear in this episode. We apologize. There are two Patreon-exclusive episode that tie into this one, if you're willing to pay the very low fee of $1 a month! There's an episode all about The Tick: https://www.patreon.com/posts/cartoons-that-us-129745700 And one about Jonny Quest: https://www.patreon.com/posts/cartoons-that-us-131953014 Both have a lot to do with how Venture Bros. ended up becoming the show it did! Have a listen!

Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHThe movie kicks off with—yep, you guessed it—a yule log. A woman named Dianne shows up and begins vacuuming the floor. There's a knock at the door, and it's another woman claiming her car broke down. Suddenly, her son invites himself in, and we see Dianne get pushed down in front of the camera. Then a masked man appears and comes after her. Just then, the video is paused, and we realize the police are watching the footage. Apparently, Dianne doesn't make it—and she's not the only one. From what I gather, Dianne was cleaning the house for a group of renters who were about to arrive. And they do. All of them end up dead—except one: Zoe. But Zoe is not doing well. And Zoe knows the truth: it wasn't a person that did this. Rather, it was a killer log that floats around and murders people.Speaking of which, a police officer is watching more of the tape when he hears a noise from the evidence room. He goes to check it out—and it's the yule log. He tries to fight back, but the yule log saws off his leg with a chainsaw and blows up the building with dynamite, destroying the tape.Zoe tries to return to normal life, but she keeps seeing the log everywhere and ends up getting fired from her job. The police tell her the case is closed—they're convinced the masked man is the killer. Zoe insists, “No, it's the log!” But no one believes her.Her friend Jakester suggests they get away from it all and spend Christmas on an island. They get in the car—but Santa makes them crash into a tree. A tow truck driver shows up, and he's a total hunk.Zoe starts wandering around this small town, axe in hand, and notices things get oddly brighter when she enters Main Street. She keeps bumping into hunks, but she doesn't have time for that. The first hunk is an influencer named Bo Regards, and he announces, “WE'RE GOING TO GET DINNER!” After the fourth hunk knocks her over, she yells for help. A hunky Christmas ornament shop owner comes to her rescue and brings her inside. She meets his kid and his Nana and learns that the guy—Bert—is a widower. She accidentally knocks over all the ornaments and tries to fix them, but then she gets a text from Bo about dinner plans. Turns out Bo has opened his own competing ornament shop. Unfortunate.Meanwhile, the yule log is on its own adventure. It sneaks into the trunk of a family going camping and proceeds to brutally kill them all.Bo agrees to let Zoe use his helicopter, but it leaves without her. As she walks back to town, Bert and his family pick her up and offer to let her stay with them. She opens up to Bert about what happened, and he's like, “Don't worry—I know just what you need.” He's built a machine that helps people process trauma. And it works. Her life changes. She's full of holiday cheer and no longer afraid of the yule log.Zoe and Bert have a wonderful day together—blowing bubbles by the creek, sliding down a fire pole, etc. Everything seems great—until we see the yule log peeking around a corner. But don't worry—Santa shows up and captures it in a bag. He runs it through a wood chipper, then buries the pieces in a shallow grave and pours cement over it. Looks like the nightmare is finally over.Except… one tiny wood strip escapes. It flies through the air and gives Nana a splinter. They all go inside for dinner, and—don't ask me why—Zoe opens the freezer and sees a mini version of Nana, who invites her inside. Zoe climbs in and shrinks down too. Her ex, Alex, is also in the freezer, working on his boxing skills. (I have no idea, man.)The next day, Nana complains about her stomach—but I'm sure it's nothing. At Christmas dinner, chaos erupts. Nana starts vomiting all over the food and then starts choking. One of the Cards tries to give her the Heimlich when suddenly they're stabbed by a giant tree branch. More branches burst from Nana until her head pops off—and the yule log crawls out from the head hole.Nana Yule Log heads to the town square, where the Yule Log Festival is happening. She lights all the other yule logs on fire, and they begin attacking the townspeople. She tracks Zoe and Bert back to his house, where they discover that the ashes of their loved ones are the only thing that can extinguish the fire. They win! Zoe decides it's best to leave town. But in the end, she returns for the store's grand re-opening—and kisses Bert.

You know him as Murray in “Stranger Things,” or Martin in “Fleabag,” or loved him in “Lemon” (the wonderful indie film he also co-wrote), or his countless guest star roles on Comedy Central, Adult Swim, “The Office,” “Curb” (the list goes on), but lately Brett Gelman has been venturing into more serious projects like “McVeigh” and “Lady in the Lake.” On this episode, he talks about the conscious choice to just “do great roles” that often takes him away from comedy. He talks about his relationship to the craft which started in acting school, explains how bombing on stage doing improv was great training for acting, describes why a method approach continues to serve him, makes a plea for us to stop being afraid to “enter into the ugly,” and much more. Currently you can catch him, and his co-host (and wife) Ari Dayan, on their podcast “Neurotica,” which gives listeners an unfiltered view into their marriage! Listen wherever you get your podcasts! Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Send us a textFrom accidentally stealing the spotlight on David Letterman's show as a teenager to voicing beloved animated characters for two decades, James Urbaniak's acting journey reads like a masterclass in versatility and perseverance. In this wide-ranging conversation, Urbaniak reveals the unexpected path that took him from New Jersey community theater to New York's experimental off-off-Broadway scene in the late 1980s. With remarkable candor, he shares how challenging theatrical experiences—like performing a 75-minute solo monologue in "Tom Paine"—helped develop his craft before independent filmmaker Hal Hartley introduced him to the different demands of screen acting.Fans of Adult Swim's cult classic "The Venture Bros." will delight in Urbaniak's behind-the-scenes stories from his 20-year tenure voicing Dr. Rusty Venture and other characters. He recounts the surreal experience of having a makeup artist on the set of an HBO film tell him she was more excited to meet the voice of Dr. Venture than Al Pacino himself—a testament to the profound connection voice actors can forge with audiences.Urbaniak's philosophy of acting—describing himself as "a skeptic who likes to be surprised"—offers valuable insight into navigating the entertainment industry's inherent uncertainty. Whether discussing his brief but memorable appearance in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," his experience playing Robert Crumb in "American Splendor," or his current work on Apple TV+'s "Palm Royale," Urbaniak demonstrates why character actors are often the secret ingredient that elevates productions across all media. For aspiring actors, film buffs, animation fans, or anyone fascinated by the creative process, this conversation provides a rare glimpse into the life of a working actor who has successfully built a diverse career by embracing opportunities across multiple entertainment platforms.Support the show

This week on Transmissions, a return guest, the great comedian, writer, actor, and podcaster Joe Pera. Joe first appeared here on Transmissions in 2020 alongside his friend and collaborator James Wallace aka Skyway Man, and we've wanted to have him back ever since. This talk is a blast, covering everything from the beauty of Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport to representations of Catholicism in science fiction to Joe's experience seeing the late Mitch Hedberg live. Pera's TV show, Joe Pera Talks With You, ran for three seasons on Adult Swim between 2018-2021. Quiet and restrained but deeply funny, the show's gentle slice of life stories and meditative pace made it an utterly unique project. Joe's latest work includes the 2023 stand up special Slow and Steady and Drifting Off With Joe Pera, a podcast designed specifically to help lull listeners to sleep. In addition to standard episodes covering topics like pre-bedtime drinks, wind, New York City ghosts, and soup, there are extended 8-hour versions of episodes as well, allowing for maximum slumbertime engagement. Close your eyes and settle in: here's an episode of Transmissions you might be able to doze off to. In this episode, Jonathan Wier is joined by James and Cody for a hilarious and increasingly unhinged exploration of King of the Hill fan theories. It starts off sane but quickly descends into beautiful madness—what they call the King of the Hill conspiracy iceberg. The crew tackles questions like: Why did Luanne give up auto repair? (Possible diagnosis: drain damage.) Did Peggy suffer brain damage after a skydiving mishap? Did Cotton Hill fake his death and flee to Japan? Why does Bobby own a Bart Simpson doll if The Simpsons is just a TV show in that universe? And is Dale exterminating bugs as a lifelong vendetta against his dad? Along the way, they spiral into tangents about Rocky villains, microwave-sized shoes, the myth of Peggy's size 16.5 feet, and a serious debate over who's hotter on Modern Family. If you love King of the Hill, weird fan theories, and grown men bonding over animated sitcoms, this episode is pure comfort food with a propane aftertaste.
