A Post-Military Career in Professional Sales—What is it like?(E202)

Let's talk about a post-military career in professional sales. Business-to-business (B2B) sales is one of the most important functions in the business world. It is where a company that makes a product or service interfaces directly with a customer. As the name suggests, B2B sales is all about selling products and services to other businesses in order to help them meet their professional goals in the market. From a JMO perspective, Sales is also one of the most misunderstood career field categories. When I initially talk to military officers about Sales, I often hear objections such as they do not want to go into a role that is 100% commission, high pressure, and high travel. Additionally, they think sales is a zero-sum game where you have to "do" something to someone in order to win. Business-to-business sales are different. With B2B Sales, your objective is to create a trusting relationship with a customer, demonstrate your credibility in solving their problem or creating value, and deliver a product or solution that helps your customer be more effective in their marketplace. In this episode, you will hear three Cameron-Brooks alumni talk about their post-military career in Professional Sales, their experience as sales professionals, as well as dispel some common myths about the sales profession. You will meet: Bridget Walton, USMC Command and Control 1LT, launched her career at Motorola Solutions. Blake Boyd, Army Armor CPT, launched his career at Abbott. Billy Cattron, Army Infantry CPT, launched his career at Altec. Each of those former military officers attended the January 2019 Cameron-Brooks Career Conference. One of the most interesting aspects of the webcast is that although each of these officers started their career in a different industry, each shared similar experiences about understanding customer needs, creating solutions, and ultimately bringing value. At Cameron-Brooks, we have seen countless numbers of military officers launch their careers in B2B sales. If you want to hear more about a sales career, including career progression and growth, check out podcasts with Aaron Carter, Anthony Applegate, Jonathan Brewer and Connor Pratt! Of course, if you want to know more about how Cameron-Brooks can help you reach your personal and professional goals, you can learn more on our website, LinkedIn, and YouTube, or you can call or email me directly. Welcome back! We are pleased to welcome Connor Pratt to the podcast. Connor is a former USMC Logistics officer who attended the Cameron-Brooks Career Conference in January 2018— and the perfect example of how a prepared officer has options when making the transition to business. He spent eight years in the USMC and held many positions, including Battalion Maintenance Management Officer, Platoon Commander, Battalion Motor Transport Officer, and Joint Logistics Directorate Officer. Connor has a degree in Marine Transportation from the US Merchant Marine Academy. When he attended the Career Conference, he interviewed for roles in Team Leadership and General Management, Business Analysis, and Business-to-Business Sales. Breaking Down Misconceptions At the Career Conference, Connor interviewed with 15 different industry-leading companies, including Boston Scientific, Corning, Kaeser, and Altec. He intimately chose to work for Globus Medical, a world-leading spinal and trauma medical device company. He started his career in a business-to-business sales role, and we spent the first part of the conversation diving into his day-to-day work life. Because many Junior Military Officers have a skewed view of what life is like starting in a sales role, it is always good to hear from someone who has been at it for many years now and understand their perspective on the nature of the work. A Prepared Officer Gets Results Connor spent 13 months in the Cameron-Brooks Development and Preparation Program© (DPP) before attending the January 2018 Career Conference. During that time, Connor participated in a robust professional reading program, learned about the different career field options available to him, created a relevant and specific professional resume, and prepared to interview with multiple hiring managers. Through that in-depth preparation process, Connor attended the Career Conference and got every company he interviewed to pursue him. In this episode, he explains how he thoroughly engaged in the DPP to get those kinds of results. Have Friends and HAVE FUN! Connor's friend, Chris Wilkeson, attended the November 2015 Career Conference. The two pieces of advice that Connor gives that helped him to be more successful through the process are: 1) keep in contact with those who went before you and 2.) have fun. The first seems logical; the second seems counter-intuitive. That said, the officers that are more successful at the Career Conference are those who are prepared and, thus, have the mentality to have fun. At the Conference, you will meet a wide variety of interesting and experienced business professionals. Those officers who see that as an opportunity tend to have more success through the process; that is just more fun! Created February 02, 2023 Part 1: Bryan Ellis is a Respiratory Therapist and a Registered Sleep Technologist with decades of experience, operating a physician and primary care-referred sleep diagnosis and therapy center. Bryan discusses insomnia of several types, sleep related breathing disorders, and sleep apnea. He  identifies mechanical problems with sleep, and the many issues that we have with quality of sleep, causes, and remedies. Bryan describes the process of sleep study and related care, and the sleep study environment as well as insomnia vs. respiratory and mechanical sleep issues. Sound and memory come into play. Bryan describes sleep onset insomnia and sleep maintenance insomnia and the distinctions of sleep cycles and stages as well as sleep paralysis. Brain wave frequency responses and ranges determine sleep stages, in extremely low frequency wave patterns, determined by EEG (electroencephalogram). Bryan describes how sound wave research is being done related to memory retention and access, using low frequency sound and pink noise input to the human brain. This fascinating research is leading to memory improvement and may play a role in the treatment of brain disorders of aging. Further discussion details acid reflux and its role in sleep apnea, as well as diabetic related sleep disorders. Bryan will return for a second part at a later podcast. Part 2: Amy and Jay Fisher discuss the Clovis Music Festival with future guests and information. Old, vintage electrical test equipment is described, and the need for testing, analysis, and repair of the analog studio equipment. Jay describes repairing and re-coning of early 1950s Altec 602-B monitor coaxial speakers. Altec 604 speakers were a recording studio standard, the basis of Altec's most popular monitor speakers. Jay details linear air motors which are the basis of speakers, and basic electrical theory. The role of air movement is critical to sound reproduction. Voice coils, magnets, signal, and vibration reproduction creates the sound we hear. Jay describes alignment of the voice coil, magnet clearance, spider, cone, and speaker rebuild and assembly. Hybridization of the vintage analog studio with modern digital equipment is critical for operation. Further information, photos, and history of the project is available at www.jayfisher.com Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce (and the Clovis Sounds Studio): www.clovisnm.org Engineered by Amy Fisher

Welcome back! On this episode we meet Bryce Saddoris, former Marine and Olympic qualifier. Bryce launched his career as a Sales Representative at Altec after serving as a USMC Ground Supply officer. For the first part of Bryce's military career he was on the USMC Wrestling Team and the U.S. National Olympic team. Bryce had a long and distinguished wrestling career, culminating in being #1 in his weight class for the 2015-2016 Olympic team. Through the Cameron-Brooks Career Conference, Bryce earned 5 different offers for employment and decided to launch his career at Altec. He spends some time on this podcast explaining why he chose Altec and why, after 2 1/2 years at the company, he is continuing to grow and thrive. Bryce and his wife are from Nevada, but he discusses why they chose to start their next chapter in Oregon versus their home state. Ultimately, they felt like the opportunity would be most advantageous to his career. Bryce is now being promoted to a higher-level, strategic business development position after less then 3 years. This role will allow him to navigate to his ideal location in a short amount of time. Another major part of our conversation focused on discussing how a JMO can get up and running in a territory, especially with no sales or industry experience. Imagine learning a new skill, all the while trying to get an under-performing market to exceed it's potential. I really like the way Bryce chose to go into a market where it wasn't all figured out. He ultimately bet on himself and decided he'd rather start where everything wasn't already established. Like a true competitor, he enjoyed the challenge. It was great to catch up with Bryce - I think you'll really enjoy hearing both his experience and perspective. Hello! And welcome back to another episode of the Cameron-Brooks podcast: helping you find the best JMO job after leaving the military. In this episode, I interview Mike Wilkinson. Mike is a former Navy Surface Warfare Officer with a Bachelors and Masters in Communication.  Mike transitioned out of the Navy through the Cameron-Brooks Career Search process in 2016. Mike launched his post military career with Altec Industries which is a privately held company that is a leading supplier of products and services for the electric utility, telecommunications, contractor, lights and signs and tree care markets. They design, manufacture and sell products and provide services to more than 100 countries throughout the world.  Like many Cameron-Brooks Alumni, Mike shares in the podcast how he never considered such a company prior to the Cameron-Brooks process.  He chose Altec because of their strong values and culture.  In the podcast Mike explains that location was important to him and his spouse, Martelle.  However, they prioritized the quality of the company, fit with the organization and career opportunity ahead of location.  Because of this, he chose to accept Altec as a Process Improvement Analyst in Kansas City among several other employment offers.  Due to his performance, in approximately one year, Altec promoted Mike to a Service Area Manager in Houston, TX. Houston was Mike's and Martelle's ideal location preference.  Mike's advice is to prioritize factors like quality of company, fit and future opportunities over initial location because by doing so, he ended up with a great company fit and location.
