It is hard to believe this is North East London at dawn. And yet it is. 5am, last Wednesday. Day break, on the 1st of May. Misted air, barely a breeze. Verdantly breathable air, filtered and cleaned by the dense surrounding woodland. When at 8am the park gates are unlocked, the people will come to walk the winding paths. Bathe in the atmosphere created by the trees. And breathe the restorative, country clean air. This is what a nature reserve within a city does. It purifies the air, not just for the lungs but for the ears. Layers upon layers of veteran trees soften the city rumble whilst providing a myriad of roosting spots for the songbirds to sing. And as they sing, their mellifluous sounds echo and reflect off all the boughs, branches, and countless leaves, to form an aural brilliance that is wonderful to behold. But behold the brilliance we rarely do. Rarely can do. 5am is not when most of us are around or want to be around. And perhaps, for the sake of the birds and their own sense of freedom in the trees that are their home, that's not such a bad thing. 5am is, shall we all agree, their time of day. Their chance to be on their own amongst their own kind. Be themselves, and be in the world, in their own particular way. Capturing an hour of this world, as it happened, and on a day when the sky was relatively free of planes and the nearby roads relatively free of traffic and sirens, is what the Lento box was there to do. Here is that hour of time, heard from behind the gates of the newly restored chapel at the heart of Abney Park nature reserve. Our special thanks to Abney Park for allowing us to capture the dawn chorus from the chapel. We recorded this episode exactly three years after our last recording just before the major restoration project started in the chapel. Listen to the dawn chorus from inside the chapel in 2021, in episode 68. And more episodes from around Abney Park here.
In late December 2020 we were given permission to make a long form landscape recording of Abney Park nature reserve in north east London. Abney Park is an area of long established woodland, surrounded by busy streets and major roads carrying traffic in and out of central London. It's an oasis of tranquility used by locals to escape from urban living, that very convincingly does look like deep rural woodland. Muddy paths between tall trees, with the advantage if you take the right routes, to never see the city beyond. To the ear though, the city is usually very much there and present. All around. And from above. Planes heading to London's airports pass almost directly overhead, often separated by only a minute or so. Sirens circling. Helicopters hovering too. Wondering along the muddy paths and admiring the specimen trees can require some considerable zoning out of the aural experience, depending on the action of the day and weather conditions. What we've found though, by going back through our archive, is this recording. It is one we made on Christmas Day, in between lockdowns and when air travel was substantially reduced. The sounds of the city are of course still present, but greatly softened. The wind can be heard murmurating through the trees. The birds form the primary sound sources. Their crisp songs echo, and reverberate through the empty woodland. It's a unique soundscape, that is unlikely to happen again. You can of course still witness periods of tranquility within Abney Park. We do every time we go. And there are times in this recording when the presence of human activity approaches that which is normal now. What is we think different, and demonstrated in this piece of captured quiet, is just how long the peace lasts. And just how delicate the wide panoramic sound of the city rumble is, compared to today. We'd like to think this recording might serve as a benchmark for future city designers. and for everyone to listen to, as an example of what north east London can, and did sound like, with human made noise re-balanced with the natural world.

The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Historical Events 1643 Birth of Sir Jean Chardin, French jeweler and traveler. Jean is remembered for his ten-volume work, The Travels of Sir John Chardin, which is considered one of the most important early accounts of Persia and the Near East. In Travels, Jean wrote about the Persian love language of tulips. When a young man presents a tulip to his mistress he gives her to understand, by the general color of the flower that he is on fire with her beauty, and by the black base of it that his heart is burnt to a coal. 1845 Death of Elizabeth Fox, also known as Baroness Holland, English political hostess and flower lover. When she was 15, Elizabeth married Sir Godfrey Webster, who was twenty years her senior. After having five children in six years, Elizabeth began an affair with a Whig politician named Henry Fox, the 3rd Baron Holland. When she had his child, she divorced Godfrey and quickly married Mr. Fox. Together they had six more children. Elizabeth is remembered for her strong will and domineering nature. She was a zealous socialite and highly passionate about flowers. In garden history, Elizabeth is remembered for introducing the Dahlia to England. In 1804 during a visit to Madrid's Royal Botanic Gardens, Elizabeth received Dahlia pinnata seeds from the botanist Antonio José Cavanilles ("Cah-vah-nee-yes"). When she returned to England, the little seeds were successfully cultivated in her gardens at Holland House. Twenty years later, Elizabeth's beloved second husband, Henry Fox, was so proud of her effort to share the Dahlia with England that he wrote these words in a little love note: The dahlia you brought to our isle Your praises forever shall speak; 'Mid gardens as sweet as your smile, And in color as bright as your cheek. 1964 Death of Denys Zirngiebel, Swiss-born naturalist, florist, and plant breeder. After establishing a home in Needham, Massachusetts, Denys sent for his wife and little boy. Denys and Henrietta had four children. Their only daughter (also named Henriette) married Andrew Newell Wyeth, and their son was NC Wyeth, the Realistic Painter. During the 1860s, Denys worked for the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University. He later bought a 35-acre tract of land along the Charles River in Needham and started his floral business. An excellent businessman, Denys expertly marketed his inventory. Denys shipped flowers to the White House and the State Department each week. In a nod to his Swiss heritage, Denys was the first person in America to cultivate the Giant Swiss Pansy successfully. Denys's Needham nursery grew so many Giant Swiss Pansies that the town adopted the flower as their floral emblem, and Denys became known as the "Pansy King." 2001 On this day, the French Film Amelie was released in the United States. In the movie, Amélie steals her father's garden gnome to help him escape his depression after losing his wife. Amélie gives the gnome to an airline stewardess. Her father starts receiving photos of his garden buddy visiting iconic travel destinations like Monument Valley, The Empire State Building, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, The Blue Mosque in Instanbul, and The Sphinx in Cairo, Egypt. In the end, Amélie's plan works. In the last scene, her dad sets off on his own adventure inspired by a little garden gnome. On a historical note, one of the earliest mentions of garden gnomes I could find was from July 9, 1928, in the Liverpool Echo. The article announced: Quaint Garden Ornaments... a quaint littie tribe of people - garden gnomes, sixty in number - [were] sold by auction, in Liverpool. They were imported from the Continent. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Revolutionary Genius of Plants by Stefano Mancuso This book came out in 2018, and the subtitle is A New Understanding of Plant Intelligence and Behavior. The Wall Street Journal raved about this book in their review: In this thought-provoking, handsomely illustrated book, Italian neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso considers the fundamental differences between plants and animals and challenges our assumptions about which is the 'higher' form of life. The editor wrote, ...world-renowned scientist Stefano Mancuso reveals the surprisingly sophisticated ability of plants to innovate, to remember, and to learn, offering us creative solutions to the most vexing technological and ecological problems that face us today. Despite not having brains or central nervous systems, plants perceive their surroundings with an even greater sensitivity than animals. They efficiently explore and react promptly to potentially damaging external events thanks to their cooperative, shared systems; without any central command centers, they are able to remember prior catastrophic events and to actively adapt to new ones. Stefano introduced the controversial topic of plant memory this way, After years spent investigating the many aspects of plant intelligence, I have been consistently surprised and fascinated by plants' clear capacity for memory. Maybe that sounds strange, but think about it for a moment. It isn't too difficult to imagine that intelligence is not the product of one single organ but that it is inherent to life, whether there is a brain or not. Plants, from this point of view, are the most obvious demonstration of how the vertebrate brain is an "accident," evolved only in a very small number of living beings-animals-while in the vast majority of life, represented by plant organisms, intelligence-the ability to learn, understand, and react successfully to new or trying situations--has developed without a dedicated organ. All plants are capable of learning from experience and therefore have memorization mechanisms. If you submit a plant, for example an olive tree, to a stress such as drought or salinity, it will respond by implementing the necessary modifications to its anatomy and metabolism to ensure its survival. Nothing unusual in that, right? If, after a certain amount of time, we submit the same plant to the exact same stimulus, perhaps with an even stronger intensity, we notice something that is surprising only on the surface: this time, the plant responds more effectively to the stress than it did the first time. It has learned its lesson. Somewhere it has preserved traces of the solutions found and, when there was a need, has quickly recalled them in order to react more efficiently and accurately. In other words, it learned and stored the best answers in its memory, thereby increasing its chances of survival. Stefano's clarity and conversation tone take these scientifically modern concepts and help us to see plants on a new plane of understanding. This book is 240 pages of the latest plant research and gorgeous botanical photographs to illustrate some wild ideas about the plant world. You can get a copy of The Revolutionary Genius of Plants by Stefano Mancuso and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $4. Botanic Spark 1890 Death of Shirley Hibberd, English journalist and garden writer. He is remembered as one of the most successful gardening writers of the Victorian era. Shirley edited three enormously popular gardening magazines, including Amateur Gardening, which is still published today. Shirley's life story was lost to time until the garden historian Anne Wilkinson wrote his biography after fifteen years of painstaking research. Anne shares a wonderful timeline of what she could piece together about Shirley's life. The result is a wonderful and poignant mix of gardening passion and personal tragedy, as evidenced by the events between 1877 and 1885. 1877 The Amateur's Kitchen Garden. 1878 Home Culture of the Watercress leads to Shirley Hibberd being awarded a gold medal by the RHS. 1879 'Water for Nothing Every House its own Water Supply'; Familiar Garden Flowers starts to be issued. 1880 Shirley Hibberd and Sarah move to Brownswood Park, Highbury. Sarah dies of heart disease and is buried in Abney Park Cemetery. 1881 Feud between Shirley Hibberd and William Robinson generated by Shirley Hibberd's criticism of William Robinson's asparagus competition. Shirley Hibberd invited to edit Amateur Gardening, a new cheap paper, published by Collingridges. Marriage to Ellen Mantle, his cook. 1884 They move to Priory Road, Kew. Shirley Hibberd works for the RHS on renovating their garden at Chiswick; is a member of the Floral Committee and the Garden Committee. 1885 Birth of Shirley Hibberd's daughter Ellen, and death of Ellen, his wife; she is buried in Abney Park. The Golden Gate and Silver Steps. Shirley Hibberd organises a Pear Conference. Shirley was a champion of amateur gardening during an era when it was thoroughly rebuked by horticultural high society. But Shirley's curiosity and passion for gardening and its ancillary interests overpowered any scorn. When it came to gardening, Shirley was a conscious competent, and he was eager to educate others about gardening, a topic of many of his books. Shirley's topics ranged from town gardening and aquariums to beekeeping and conservation. Shirley was ahead of his time. Shirley Hibberd once wrote, ...the social qualities of flowers [are so many] that it would be a difficult ... to enumerate them. ... [Upon] entering a room, [we always feel welcome when] we find a display of flowers on the table. Where there are flowers about, the hostess appears glad, the children pleased, the very dog and cat are grateful... the whole scene and [all souls seem] more hearty, homely, and beautiful, [in the presence of] the bewitching roses, and orchids and lilies and mignonette! Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

There's a special feeling that comes with the sound of falling rain. With a sky still free of jet planes, this is how the day unfolds within the secret space of the derelict chapel of Abney Park. It is first thing in the morning, when the birds begin to sing and the trees change from dark shadow into green. Set within dense woodland in the north east of London, barred and padlocked against vandals, this architecturally significant chapel hollowed out by fire thirty years ago, now stands on the cusp of restoration. It's a dissenting gothic structure that aligns and appreciates the natural landscape, and whose 120 foot spire, still visible above the veteran pines, signifies to all around that below lies an oasis of calm within the city. Since its dereliction, the chapel has witnessed ten thousand dawns. This is just one of them. One glorious section of time captured by a pair of microphones left alone to record inside the chapel, underneath nesting birds.
It is said that cities never sleep, but from inside north east London's Abney Park nature reserve, the silken hum tells a different story. It's the early hours of Christmas Day 2020. The park has long since closed. Nothing is about. From part way up the trunk of one of the many ivy-clad trees, the microphones are recording. Capturing the murmurations of the city at night. The traffic has retreated. The torrents of noise have shallowed. An urban sprawl that's gone out to the horizon. This is the sound of the city at low tide. The indeterminable rumble has thinned, to a soft hum. A panoramic hum that shifts, and billows, like curtains of audible silk. It's sometimes lost amongst the hiss and rustle of the ivy. A fox barks. An undulating tone fades in and out. Somewhere off, an unsteady bough squeaks, like a rusty garden gate. Lone cars pass in long hushing waves. Near to the microphones ivy leaves rustle. Then, is that something singing from through the leaf bare trees? Is it a silvery glimpse of dawn? It is a robin. But it's only dreaming. Dreaming out loud, of tomorrow's song. Explore our other episodes recorded from Abney Park.
Through the bare limbed trees of Abney Park nature reserve in Hackney, London a song thrush sings sweetly. It's first light. The air and the microphones are frozen, left behind through a long night and its icy winds. Ivy hangs still, above the lion on the tomb. Abney Park is both a nature reserve and one of London's 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries. It's early, silky quiet. The park hasn't opened yet. The derelict chapel is an angular shadow beneath leafless trees. Footpaths lie empty, gravestones unread. Everything's waiting for the people to appear. Bathed in the soft city rumble, the softest it can be, the rooks see the light and caw from the treetops. Wood pigeons wake up. Robins stationed on branches one, two, three, brightly twistle strong melodies, mark their territories, all puffed up against the cold. Seagulls wheel in the wide open above the wood, and a sparse few planes rumble by, long haulers coming in, they must be, this being Christmas Day. With the gathering light comes the dazzling spacious song of wrens. A woodpecker. A fleeting murmur of passing geese. A hint of a breeze, a moment of shift in the ivy. And then of alerting birds and far off the sounds of people, a family, happy children and their dog. The first in. The first through the gate. The first to breathe the pure crisp air of Abney Park, on this fast brightening Christmas Day of 2020. [This episode was produced in collaboration with the Abney Park Cemetery Trust.]
Tucked behind buildings, encircled by busy roads in the borough of Hackney in London, there's Abney Park. It's one of the 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries of London with marble-topped tombs half hidden by vines. It is a designated nature reserve protecting a rich ecological environment. Locals nip in, to take their dogs for a walk, to clear their heads and to get lost on its winding paths. It's home too for a rich variety of birds, including green parrots. Planted as an exotic arboretum in 1840, there are around 200 trees, some still remain from that first planting. It's a mild October day, and the rain is falling. Everything is being drenched. After a long time walking under dripping canopy we find a spot for the microphones. Set back from the path it's a small leafy hollow, bisected by a diagonal spur growing out of an old oak. The rain is falling heavier now, sifting down in waves down through the branches, pattering onto millions of waxy leaves. These old trees are bathing in it. They're pushing away the noise of the city, and sheltering the tranquillity of Abney Park under their boughs.

WEDS. May 9, 2018, 6-7pm PDT: #CTR guest, Robert Brown, the creator, and lead singer for steampunk band, Abney Park, joins host Cheri Wilson to discuss what it takes to pay the bills as an independent, fan-fuelled, artist. Brown is also the author and creator of both books and games tied to the band and the steampunk world. With platforms like Go Fund Me, Indigogo, Patreon, and more, artists of all mediums are now able to crowdsource a living, or at least supplement them. There are some hurdles as well. Releasing exclusive content to a limited audience is not always in the artist's best interest and balancing when that once exclusive content can be made public so as not to upset patrons is tricky for some. The time commitment to create exclusive content is worth considering.too. Is it worth it? Speaking on Con panels, Brown has explained the challenges and costs of touring, the cost of video-making, and the difficulty for not only artists, but also the venues or event coordinators themselves, Brown, who often tours in and outside of the country, uses the popular, Patreon, where he offers incentives like live studio jams, unreleased music, games, and more, in exchange for your patronage. #AbneyPark #steampunk #CTR #Patreon

Durango-Silverton RR Dec 01 | 24 bit (1:33)Hi, and welcome to the Open Licensed Music Podcast, the show where we highlight music from artists who let you share their music. I'm Ralph Wacksworth, and today's episode is featuring steampunk music. A bunch of the songs this week have vocals, but there are also a bunch of instrumentals, too. So let's get started! The Watchmaker's Apprentice (5:41)Fig Leaf Rag - distressed (3:29)Battle In The Sky - A Steampunk Orchestra (3:01)Eighteenth Century (1:51)"Epic" Orchestral Piece (3:00)The Clockwork City (12/14) (1:55)Frost Waltz (2:18)That was a chunk of Durango-Silverton RR Dec 01 | 24 bit by BoilingSand, which is available from FreeSound and is licensed under an Attribution license. If you ever get a chance to ride the Durango and Silverton, it is an excellent ride and well worth it to go see. After that was The Watchmaker's Apprentice by The Clockwork Quartet, which is available from their website at clockworkquartet.com and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial Share-Alike license. Then we had Fig Leaf Rag - distressed by Kevin MacLeod, which is available from incompetech.com and is licensed under an Attribution license. Next up was Battle In The Sky - A Steampunk Orchestra by Walid Feghali and Eighteenth Century by Niklas Stagvall, which are both available from SoundCloud and are licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. After that was "Epic" Orchestral Piece by Steven O'Brien and The Clockwork City (12/14) by David Cordero Chang, which are both available from SoundCloud and are licensed under an Attribution license. And finishing up was Frost Waltz by Kevin MacLeod, which is available from incompetech.com and is licensed under an Attribution license.Although I'm a big fan of open licensing, I also very much enjoy music from artists who are either independent or are on labels which kind of buck the trend of seemingly the majority of the mainstream music industry and actually like the fact that they have people listening to their music. And with steampunk music, although I can't play it on here, there is a lot of really good stuff either direct published or on small labels. A few songs I can heartily recommend listening to include:- Airship Pirate by Abney Park- Steph(v)enson by The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing (who actually released a version of that album on wax cylinder)- All Hail the Chap by Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer- I Want Only You by The Cog Is Dead- Just Glue Some Gears On It (And Call It Steampunk) by Sir Reginald Pikedevant, Esquire- Roustabout by Beats Antique- and Lament for a Toy Factory by Dr. SteelMost of this week's music was chosen more for a mechanical sound than for anachronistic style combinations. Stuff that just sounded to me like it went well with a slow speed reciprocating engine. Not everyone considers the same things "steampunk music", since it's not a particularly well-defined genre, but this kind of thing falls pretty squarely into that category for me.Steam Train Interior (2:16)Railroad (1:42)Atom Hub Toolshed_contextual_demo (0:36)Tim Reed - Four Miniatures for Violin and Cello Duo (excerpt 1) (1:01)Clockwork Symphony (2:30)04 A Garden in Italy - The Archive Box - Stereochemistry (4:10)That was a chunk of Steam Train Interior by allh, which is available from FreeSound and is licensed under the CC0 license. After that was Railroad by Jake Tickner and Atom Hub Toolshed_contextual_demo by Walid Feghali, which are both available from SoundCloud and are licensed under an Attribution license. Then we had Tim Reed - Four Miniatures for Violin and Cello Duo (excerpt 1) by Tim Reed, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. Next up was Clockwork Symphony by Psarius and finishing up was 04 A Garden in Italy - The Archive Box - Stereochemistry by stereochemistrymusic, which are both available from SoundCloud and are licensed under an Attribution license.Today's app-of-the-day is OpenTTD, a transportation network simulator where your job is to build a system of road, rail, air, and ship routes to connect together towns and industries to move people and goods around the map in the most efficient way possible. It's a little like if you took just the transportation components of a city simulator and extended it into its own game. For example, not only do you build train stations and tracks, but the terrain of the tracks will slow down your trains if they hit a hill. You also have to do regular maintenance on your vehicles and even build their routes and schedules. I'll admit I'm pretty terrible at playing it, partially due to my propensity to overuse trains instead of other forms of transportation, but I still have a lot of fun playing it. It's available for Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris and OpenIndiana, AmigaOS and MorphOS, BeOS and Haiku, OS/2, RISC OS, Android, PalmOS, Symbian, Nintendo DS, Wii, PSP, Apple iOS, Mac OS X, MS-DOS, and Microsoft Windows. Download it today at openttd.orgNow for a short noncommercial break from one of our nonsponsors followed by more music.20000 Leagues under the SeasTower Bridge old machine room (1:00)CONCERNS (3:36)Monomental (3:20)Prelude No. 7 in A major, Op. 2g on a crappy old, out of tune, upright piano (1:44)Shine On, Harvest Moon (1:55)Ain't Nobody's Business (5:44)Steampunk Girl (3:56)That was Tower Bridge old machine room by The London Sound Survey, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. After that was CONCERNS by AKAJULES and Monomental by aledjones_musics, which are both available from Jamendo and are licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial Share-Alike license. Then we had Prelude No. 7 in A major, Op. 2g on a crappy old, out of tune, upright piano by Steven O'Brien, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution license. Next up was Shine On, Harvest Moon by Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth and performed by Bill Kramme singing with himself, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial Share-Alike license. After that was Ain't Nobody's Business by Porter Grainger and Everett Robbins and performed by Cryindtbuffkin, which is available from SoundCloud and is licensed under an Attribution license. Finishing up was Steampunk Girl by John Anealio, which is available from his website at johnanealio.com and is licensed under an Attribution Noncommercial license. So, that's all for today. Remember - piracy of commercial music only proves your dependence on that model and justifies further censorship and restriction. So don't pirate it - replace it with something better. Listen to open licensed music, donate to the artists behind it, go to concerts, and buy music from artists whose record labels don't see you as their enemies. Support artists where your support actually counts. This episode was made using Gentoo Linux, Xubuntu Linux, Audacity, Audacious for organizing playlists, and Leafpad for notes, and is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial Share-Alike license. Feel free to give it to your friends, or if you didn't like it, your enemies. Links to the songs in this podcast are available on the website. Listen in next time for some celtic music. We’ve all heard the cliche many times: life is full of surprises. This was never more true for us than during our experience that eventually led us to remix both versions of the track “After the Ball” and “Its Too Late” for Minefield in 2003. When we finished recording The Electric Haze in 2001, I had decided that I would make the album available online rather than follow the traditional music label route that many bands were still clamoring for, which was to get an A & R guy from a label to notice your band and sell their music label on offering you a deal. Raven and I both knew from experiences of friends and family who had worked in the music industry that this was really not the best way to put out an album, particularly an album that was likely to fit into such a small niche of music. So we explored online, and eventually we settled on mp3.com and CDbaby.Mp3.com had this wonderful music community. Even cooler, they offered on-demand distribution, which would allow you to upload your songs and artwork, and they would manage the dirty details of manufacturing the CDs. In 2001 this was a novel idea that was only really beginning to pick up steam. Prior to that, it was nearly impossible for a musician (or an author for that matter) to have short runs (of fewer than 3,000 or more copies) of your work produced. Now, its just a matter of burning your own discs and/or uploading your music to any number of social networks, peer to peer, and musical services who make distribution much easier. While mp3.com handled manufacturing, they weren’t that great at selling the music of independent artists. We had heard that there was this new site around called CDBaby. The buzz among musicians was that this venture, created and operated by Derek Sivers in Portland, Oregon was really the next best way to have your CD online after CDnow and Amazon.com. We setup an account and sent them a batch of CDs to stock in their warehouse. When someone purchased our album from their site, they would go ahead and ship it out themselves and then credit our account with the sale, rather than wait for us to fill the order, as Amazon.com did at the time. Unbeknown to us, when our albums arrived at CDBaby, they were met and handled by a volunteer named Jett Black (not the porn star, BTW). He was passionately involved in the Portland, Oregon underground gothic, electronic, and punk scene. Jett was taken with our sound and went about trying to contact us via email and phone. Initially we didn’t know what to make of his highly complimentary emails. One reason for our suspicion with Jett had to do with experiences we had heard about fromother musicians who were encouraged to send their albums to retailers in foreign countries, only to discover that the recipients were not legitimate resellers, but rather enterprising pirates who used the albums as masters for which to rip their master tracks for illegal sale in their own country. Eventually I spoke in person with Jett by phone and realized that his motives were quite innocent. Anyone who has met Jett, will tell you that he is one of the friendlies people you’ll ever meet. Jett was big on introducing artists to one another, and before we knew it we had been invited to a dinner at the Kennedy School that featured a bunch of people from the goth scene. Steven Holiday, publisher of Gothic Beauty was there, as well as Portland and Seattle bands Written In Ashes, Abney Park, The Sins, and Haunted House. One of the perks at these dinners were the goodie bags that Jett and his wife Sonya would assemble. In each goodie bag were tons of stickers, free CDs, usb keys, marketing materials, and show flyers for everyone involved in the Portland and Seattle music scene, as well as a few other bands that were well known across the U.S. (The Strand, Razed in Black, and The Cruxshadows were among those). In our goodie bag was “After the Ball” , a debut EP album by a budding young artist, Tamara Kent, who hailed from Canada.About a year later, Jett, who had heard our Depeche Mode and Madonna remixes, informed us that he had recommended our services to Tamara, who really wanted to hear what other people could create with her material. We accepted, and before we knew it we’d received these very nice and organized discs that contained all of the master tracks from the After the Ball EP (what people in the industry call stems). The remixes were due in short order, so Raven and I broke up the work among us. She took on “After the Ball” and I ended up with “Its Too Late”. I hoped with my version to capture the frustration, despair, and the resignation of the character in the song with the distorted vocals, and the vamping bass line was to symbolize the painful yearning heartbeat of a lost relationship.Wa Dead Poets SocietyMinefield - "Its Too Late (dead poets society)"Subscribe on:Apple PodcastsGoogle PlayRSS feed (for apps)

In this episode we pick up where we ended in chapter two about the US constitution Article 1 Section 8 Clause 7, which is in the chapter's last section titled "The Constitutions Problems: Article I Section 8...Sadly, A Template For Disaster." After finishing the rest of chapter 2, we cover all of chapter 3, which is titled "WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT (AFTER A BIT OF INSPECTION)." It contains the following sections: Freedom In A Nutshell Self-Ownership Property Is An Extension Of Self-Ownership To Those Who Dislike Property And Profit The bumper music used in this episode is from the electronic song "The Wake (Mercy Cage remix)" by Abney Park. This particular remix doesn't seem available for free on their site (I got it from the old mp3.com years ago), but other versions are.
