i went to an estate sale last weekend and i bought two jars of rubber bands. one had red rubber bands. the other had green rubber bands. they were so neatly organized. so pleasing to look at. someone, and presumely this person is now dead, took the care to organize these jars of rubber bands and i knew immediately that i had to have them. it was sunday and in the last hour of the estate sale. everything was cheap and whatever was left over was probably destined for the landfill. is it my job to save all the treasurers of the recently deceased? no. but maybe. and i’ve saved other objects before. notebooks. homemade fridge magnets. odd collections of useless items. at least, the items are useless to me, but they were meaningful to someone. and that’s what draws me to them. i hope that some day someone decides that my trash is worth preserving. and in that trash, i will live forever.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Surface to Air Missive “Monster’s Mouth” Shelly’s Gone02:34 Erika Bell “Whales” Precept07:10 GOMME “Floss” Absent Healing10:31 J.F. This week we resume our investigation of Night Demon's early days.  We pick up the narrative at the beginning of 2013.  Night Demon played a show on January 5, with Dusty as roadie for drummer John Crerar. It marked the first time Jarvis and Dusty had hung out in depth, aside from a prior occasion when Dusty had saved Jarvis's life. The guys began forging bonds of camaraderie with touring bands, providing hospitality that would one day be reciprocated.  A setback occurred when Night Demon lost their practice space because of noise complaints, but fortunately a historically important alternative location was secured. In late January 2013, Night Demon played their pivotal first show in Los Angeles. That night, Jarvis reached a crucial personal and professional crossroads, and decided to go all-in with Night Demon. The band had suddenly become more serious. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. In this episode, we continue exploring the Night Demon members' musical history and precursor bands. We resume the story after the demise of Black Opal. Jarvis hooked up with a band called No Motiv as tour manager while exploring a career with Guitar Center, before abandoning corporate life and going all in by joining No Motiv as bass player.  Meanwhile, Armand joined a band called From Satellite formed as a splinter entity from No Motiv, first on bass and then on guitar. In From Satellite, Armand learned the seduction and pitfalls of easy major label backing, only to watch the band crater in the wake of Green Day's 'American Idiot' phenom in 2004. Meanwhile, Jarvis explored his musical dreams playing bass and contributing creatively in No Motiv, learning volumes about songwriting and touring life along the way. Together, From Satellite and No Motiv were pivotal musical experiences in the history of Armand and Jarvis, whose reverberations carry through to Night Demon today. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. This week's episode is "Roots of the Demon, Part 2." We continue our exploration of the formative years of Night Demon's current members by telling the story of Jarvis's first band, Black Opal. You will hear in detail from Jarvis and other surviving members how Black Opal came into being, their obsession with Metallica, how they dedicated themselves to constant practicing, and how they struggled to get gigs because of their young age and the out-of-fashion nature of their unbridled heavy metal attack. We unearth snippets of Black Opal's first live performance, demo recordings and so on.  (Full versions of these recordings are available to subscribers.)  We examine how Black Opal's path intersected with a local band called The Whereabouts, which featured Armand on guitar.  The Whereabouts were not a heavy metal band, but were a  talented alternative rock combo that were ahead of their time and much admired by the local metal community for their next-level musicianship, songwriting, and business savvy.  Both bands played together at The Majestic Ventura Theater on many occasions. Finally, we recount the tragic circumstances that led Black Opal to be laid to rest in June 1999. Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. David talks of his association with owner/breeder John Camilleri and his cousin John Cordina who still has horses in the stable. Their association began with a bonny mare called Gallant Tess. The trainer remembers the ill conformed Centennial Park who belied his problems to win 8 races with 12 placings and $1 million in prize money. David recalls a Gr 1 win with a horse nobody wanted. Australian Bloodstock took the gamble and purchased the horse from WA. David won the T.J.Smith with Master Of Design. He looks back on some exciting times with Ace High who carried the John Cordina colours. The colt won a Gloaming Stks, Spring Champion Stks, Victoria derby and was beaten a whisker in the Australian Derby. He amassed almost $2.3 million. David is full of praise for the wonderful Criterion. He trained the stallion for the first half of his career to win a Black Opal, a Todman Stakes, Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby. David recalls his unlucky 7th in a Cox Plate.

Alana Valentine—one of Australia’s most renowned and respected playwrights, whose work includes Parramatta Girls, Eyes to the Floor, Shafana and Aunt Sarrinah, Grounded and Cyberbile—reads the preface to the double edition of Brumby Innes and Bid Me to Love, two plays written by another of Australia’s literary treasures, Katharine Susannah Prichard. The introduction was written by Prichard's son, Ric Throssell.A little bit about Katharine Susannah PrichardPrichard was born in Levuka, Fiji, where her father was editor of the Fiji Times. She matriculated from South Melbourne College and worked briefly as a governess. She later taught in Melbourne studying English literature at night. In 1908 she travelled to London, working as a freelance journalist for the Melbourne Herald and, on her return, as the social editor of the Herald's women's page. In 1912 she left for England again to pursue a career as a writer and published two novels, The Pioneers and Windlestraws. She met the Australian Victoria Cross winner, Captain Hugo Throssell while away and in 1919 she married him and moved to Western Australia. Already a committed Communist in 1920, she was a founding member of the Communist Party of Australia. In 1922 her only son Ric Throssell was born. While she was on a trip to the Soviet Union in 1933 Hugo Throssell committed suicide. From the 1920s until her death she lived at Greenmount, Western Australia, earning her living as a writer of novels, short stories and plays. Her novels include Black Opal; Working Bullocks; The Wild Oats of Han; Coonardoo; Haxby's Circus; Intimate Strangers; and the goldfields trilogy The Roaring Nineties, Golden Miles and Winged Seeds. Prichard was a member of the Communist Party of Australia until her death, and her political concerns were reflected in most of her published work. Her novels were published throughout the world and translated into numerous languages. In 1951 she was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature.A few words about Brumby Innes and Bid Me to LoveWritten in the 1920s, Brumby Innes confronts the turbulent relations between the sexes and the races in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is published with another Prichard play from the 1920s, Bid Me To Love which, by contrast, is set among the fashionable rich in the lush hills outside Perth.
