Transforming Resistance into Resilience: Tonya Blanchford's Guide to Thriving Through Major Life Changes

Life in Transition

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 27, 2025 43:17

"What if the most challenging transition in your life could become your greatest opportunity with just one mental shift?"In this deeply personal episode of Life in Transition, host Art Blanchford interviews his wife Tonya about her transformative experience relocating their family to Shanghai, China. Tonya shares how her initial resistance to the move transformed through a single, powerful mindset shift that changed her perspective from feeling trapped to recognizing her agency. She describes the moment she realized she could simply decide to embrace the change, shifting from seeing negatives to focusing on potential positives, and how this fundamental shift in perspective altered not just her approach to the move but her entire relationship with life's challenges. The conversation explores how Tonya channeled her own transition struggles into creating a robust support community for other expat families, ultimately building a program that served over 100 families through monthly tours, regular social gatherings, and a multilingual welcome network. Tonya reflects on how this experience taught her to recognize her power to create change, a lesson she continues to apply in her current work supporting foster youth transitioning to adulthood. The episode offers listeners practical wisdom on transforming resistance into opportunity through conscious choice and mindset management.Tonya Blanchford is a community builder, volunteer coordinator, and transition expert who transformed the expatriate experience for dozens of families in Shanghai, China. As an "Army brat" who moved every two years during her childhood, Tonya leveraged her lifetime of transitions to create support systems for others facing similar challenges. After successfully relocating her three young children internationally and building the New Parents Program at the British International School in Shanghai, she now serves as the volunteer coordinator for Jonathan's Path, a local charity supporting foster children aging out of the system. Tonya's personal philosophy centers on the power of mindset shifts and conscious choice in navigating life's most challenging transitions.About The Show: The Life in Transition, hosted by Art Blanchford focuses on making the most of the changes we're given every week. We continue our series of episodes about books that have been banned or challenged around the country. This time, it's the Newbery Award winning novel by Madeleine L'Engle: A Wrinkle in Time. According to the Carnegie Mellon Banned Books Project, the book was challenged in 1985 by parents in Florida who said the book “opposes Christian beliefs and teaches occult practices. The school principal did not remove the book from 4th grade curriculum. In 1990, a parent in Alabama asked to have the book removed because it “sends a mixed signal to children about good and evil.” The school board and superintendent voted unanimously to deny the request. Six years later, the book was challenged in North Carolina for undermining religious beliefs. The school board denied the request. Madeline L'Engle herself told the New York Times in 2001 that “it seems people are willing to damn the book without reading it.” We read it with a group of young readers and this is what they have to say about A Wrinkle in Time. This week, we tackle a classic – the 1963 winner of the Newbery Award “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L'Engle. Our readers are 5th graders from the British International School in Washington, DC. Our celebrity reader is public radio journalist Stephanie O'Neill. Madeline L'Engle passed away in 2007, but we're joined by her granddaughters Charlotte Jones Volklis and Lena Roy.  They've written a biography of their grandmother based on her journals called “Becoming Madeleine.” Kitty Felde is host.  FAVORITE BOOKS FROM BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Panda-monium - Stuart Gibbs Harry Potter - J.K. In this is the Wired Educator Podcast, I  interview Stephen Cox, the Founder and CEO of the United Kingdom's leading teacher training provider, Osiris, and host of the World Education Summit. He's an expert in visible learning and works closely with John Hattie. He will enchant you with his accent, and he will blow you away with all that he's learned about what really works in education and what outstanding teaching really looks like. He's got the research, he's got the data, he's got the answers. I love this episode. I grew so much talking to Stepher and you will too. Put your headphones on and brace for impact.  Stephen is the host of the World Education Summit which I encourage you to sign up for right now. Here's the link worldedsummit.com.   It is a virtual summit from March 22 to March 25, but you will want to hit that link right now and sign up. It's that good. John Hattie, author of Visible Learning and one of the most important minds in education is their keynote speaker, and there are over 400 other amazing presenters. This is the virtual summit you're looking for. Period. I'm not kidding. Hit the link, take a look at who's there and you will want in. It's amazing. Stephen Cox is the founder and CEO of Osiris Educational, the UK's leading independent teacher training provider, and the host of The World Education Virtual Summit. For the last quarter of a century, he has worked with the world's top educationalists to bring pioneering and innovative training to teachers and leaders across the U.K and throughout schools around the world. During this time, he has developed and supported award-winning educational programmes including: the Osiris Teaching Intervention, Collective Leadership and Visible Learning. His latest cutting-edge mission is centred on creating worldwide online systems for teacher and learning development. In response to the disruption caused to worldwide education by COVID-19, Stephen has re-focused on creating sustainable, online, interactive networks and programmes for teacher and leader development. He is continually driven by his belief that all learners deserve a great start in life, and this is achieved through an unrelenting focus on the quality and impact of teaching and learning. I am honored to share Stephens Bryant's with you in this amazing conversation. Here's Stephan Cox Professional Summary: Fresh out of a PGCE in Secondary education from the University of Warwick, Stephen taught economics for ten years in the UK and at the British International School, Cairo (BISC). Dissatisfied with the quality of teacher training that he was receiving, Stephen moved back to the UK in 1997 and founded Osiris Educational with the 30-year vision of improving the life chances of children across the world. Osiris had humble beginnings, with Stephen and his partner Brenda developing and delivering their own training, based off their own expertise at quality provision. Over the years, Osiris quickly grew to become the nation's leading independent provider of teacher training, with the world's greatest educationalists in collaboration. During this time, Stephen worked closely with such world-renowned educationalists as Professor John Hattie, Professor Guy Claxton, Professor Carol Dweck and many others on developing and releasing now world-famous programmes for teachers in the UK, including Visible LearningPlus, the Osiris Mindsets Programme, and the Osiris Teaching Intervention. Mentioned in this Podcast:  The book Visible Learning. by John Hattie The World Education Virtual Summit I highly recommend you suscribe to Seth's daily blog and visit is website here.   Complete this form if you would like to receive a free FREE Wired Educator Podcast Sticker: https://forms.gle/RsEBuVwkapeGTc9D6 This link will take you to ALL of Kelly's social media: https://linktr.ee/kellycroy Sign-up for Kelly's newsletter here. Episode 175: An entrepreneur since age 15, Alex Hodara tells us why he created Rocket Club to teach 9 to 14-year old students robotics, coding, and entrepreneurship.  Guest Biography Entrepreneur Alex Hodara is the owner of Hodara Real Estate Group, an investment and development company he founded as a brokerage in 2008. Hodara launched the venture during his junior year at Boston University, hiring 15 of his classmates and launching what CNBC coined as “America’s first student run real estate brokerage.” Upon graduation with his B.B.A. from the distinguished Questrom School of Business, the success of Hodara’s firm landed him on Forbes’ “30 Under 30” and Bloomberg Businessweek’s “Best Young Entrepreneurs” lists. Hodara bought, renovated, and rented his first building in 2011, and today owns 200 multifamily units between Boston and Jersey City, just outside of Manhattan. In 2018 Hodara sponsored a STEM competition at Westfield High School in New Jersey. Inspired by the student’s brilliant engineering ideas and desire for elevated entrepreneurial support, he developed Rocket Club, an award winning, selffinanced robotics, coding and entrepreneurship club for kids. Hodara officially launched this passion project in February 2019 in Hoboken, New Jersey and word spread fast; with new locations popping up in Montclair, NJ, Upper West Side New York, Lower Manhattan, The British International School of NYC, and a free program in Newark, NJ during the first year of operation. Rocket Club went on to win the 2019 NJ Tech Council’s Innovation and Education Award, and STEM Leader to Watch Award. Each location was near capacity when COVID-19 hit the world, in March 2020. Hodara and the Rocket Club team quickly pivoted to a fully virtual model, providing free education to members through the fall of 2020. In the process, enrollment soared as parents sought out additional resources for their children who were distance learning. Rocket Club’s virtual curriculum is four semesters, and teaches members to develop their own businesses, learn Python coding, and build robotics. Each day, Rocket Club hosts Rocket Club Live, an interactive, educational game show and Q&A featuring a successful guest. Guests have included the founders of Netflix, Beyond Meat, Casper Mattresses, Harry’s Razors, Vonage, and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics to name a few. In this episode, you'll learn: We get a glimpse into the entrepreneur’s mind. Building a curriculum designed to expose kids to as much as possible to inspire and help them decide what they want to be when they’re older. How Alex is investing his own money to cultivate entrepreneurs of the future. (November 25, 2015) – The winners of the ninth annual Young Inventor Challenge have been announced! Chicago Toy & Game Fair's popular youth invention contest showcased a total of 107 original toy and game entries created by nearly 200 children on November 21st at Chicago's Navy Pier. Almost one third of those entries came from the British International School of Chicago, whose student Athena Gottleib (6) took home the 2nd place prize in the Junior Category. Entrants came from as far as Mexico and California, with the Senior Category 2nd place winners, Nathaniel Grgurina and Kodo Elder (both 17 years old) flying from San Rafael, California.“This was, without a doubt, the best Young Inventor Challenge yet. To see so much creativity packed into such a small space is incredibly inspiring. Given the growing importance of STEM education, we were thrilled to see so many games, including our two grand prize winners, that demonstrated how much fun science and technology can be,” said Young Inventor Challenge Director, Julie Blake.Fantastic prize packages were on offer by the event's presenting partner Spin Master including Meccanoid robot, Meccano building sets, Legendary Yoda, Air Hogs Millennium Falcon and Zoomer Kitty. Grand prize winners and their families were also treated to dinner following the event where they got one-on-one time with Spin Master marketing and toy design professionals.Senior category winner Steven Huetteman (11) was beyond excited to take home the first place prize for his game, Chromo Tag.
