There are many different ways to look at culture, and today we take a geographic approach, to distinguish people who live in rural mountain and hilly settings from those of the wider plains and urban areas.   Our focus is the country of Romania, where we'll explore the rustic landscape of small farms, hand tilled fields, and local communities that still identify with the working methods and traditions of the past. Along the way, we'll follow the cyclical work of farmers and shepherds, gain insight into the Orthodox faith, explore vibrant holiday celebrations, and reveal unique rituals with pagan roots.   In this fourth installment of our monthly series, Picturing World Cultures, we speak with Daniel Rosca, a Romanian photographer and travel guide specialized in photographic, cultural, and genealogical tours. As a child, Daniel experienced the age-old traditions of rural Romania first-hand during time spent on his grandparent's farm. Following university studies, he spent four years abroad, working in youth development, consulting, and corporate social responsibility. After living in Brussels, Warsaw, Istanbul, and Cairo, and travelling to another 40 countries on four continents, Daniel decided travel should become his full-time job. He chose to return to his homeland in 2011, where he founded Romania Photo Tours and True Romania Tours, to help curious travelers immerse themselves in—and capture images of—old-world Romanian culture. Continui cu celebrul "Ostași, vă ordon: Treceți Prutul!", un ordin care avea să emoționeze o țară întreagă. Țara nu știa însă mare lucru despre alte ordine de-ale lui Antonescu, anume Pogromul din Iași, în care mii de evrei și-au pierdut viața, împușcați sau captivi în "trenurile morții". Între timp, ofensiva românească are succes iar Operațiunea München, de eliberare a Basarabiei și Bucovinei de Nord, e realizată cu succes. În ciuda protestelor politicienilor și a opiniei publice, Ion Antonescu își continuă angajamentele de război înspre est, trecând Nistrul pentru a sprijini Wehrmachtul în Operațiunea Barbarossa.Support the show

TRIBUTO: HISTORIAS QUE CONSTRUYEN MEMORIA DE LA SHOÁ, CON CECILIA LEVIT – Java Wolf nació en Wiesznitz, en el norte de Bucovina. Su padre era el shojet (matarife ritual) del pueblo y su madre era ama de casa. En octubre de 1941, la familia de Java fue deportada junto con los judíos de Radautz a Transnistria. La tía de Miriam, que era médica, recibió un permiso especial para trabajar como médica en el gueto de Kofeygorod, y la familia se unió a ella. El 5 de julio de 1942 casi todos los judíos de Kofeygorod fueron trasladados a un campamento en un bosque cercano, rodeado por una doble alambrada de púas. Allí vivieron en condiciones difíciles hasta su regreso al pueblo. El 22 de marzo de 1944, Kofeigorud fue liberado por el Ejército Rojo y la familia de Java regresó a Radautz. Java se unió al movimiento juvenil de Bnei Akiva y emigró a Israel a finales de 1947 en el barco «Gueulá». El barco fue capturado y Eva fue enviada a Chipre. Al emigrar a Israel, Java fue enviada a la institución de inmigración juvenil «Neve Amiel». En 1953, se casó con Simón Wolf y tuvieron tres hijas. Con los años, Java comenzó a estudiar pintura y escritura creativa, y a través del arte expresó su vida durante el Holocausto. Falleció el 27 de febrero de 2021.

Nuestra siguiente invitada a #historiasquecontar es Gertrudis Ostfeld de Bendayán, hija de Hillo y Klara Ostfeld, ambos sobrevivientes del holocausto. Leon Ackerman, originario de la ciudad de Akerman, Besarabia; y Bertha Ostfeld, nacida en la pequeña ciudad de Fratauti, cerca de Chernovitz, Bucovina. Ambos fallecieron en la guerra. Hillo, su hermano Simón y sus hermanas, Anny y Sidy son sobrevivientes, la menor de ellas, Sidy, en circunstancias milagrosas. Joseff Pesatty y Henrietta Granirer originarios de Chernovitz, padres de Klara, lograron sobrevivir y llegaron al puerto de La Guaira junto a Hillo y Klara un 26 de enero de 1953 a bordo del barco Marco Polo, en tercera clase desde Génova. Habían pasado antes por “La Tierra Prometida” en 1950 para luego asentarse en “La Tierra de Gracia”, Venezuela. Trudy es la primogénita, nacida en la clínica Córdoba en 1954. Le siguieron Luis, quien a los 29 años de edad perdió su batalla contra el cáncer, y Lony, quién falleció en 2015 a consecuencia de un ataque cardíaco fulminante. Estudió su primaria y secundaria en el colegio Moral y Luces Herzl Bialik. Es Analista junguiana. Magíster en Filosofía de la Universidad Simón Bolívar. Doctorado en Estudios Psicoanalíticos en la Universidad de Essex, Inglaterra. Miembro de la IAAP - International Association for Analytical Psychology y de la AVPA -Asociación Venezolana de Psicología Analítica. Dedicada a la práctica privada y a la enseñanza y autora de varios libros, entre ellos, Anima Mundi y Ecce Mulier: Nietzsche and the Eternal Feminine, así como de numerosos artículos y conferencias y el escrito a cuatro manos junto a su padre, “Sin Tregua”. Casada con Frank Bedayán tercera generación en Venezuela, su familia es originaria de Tetuán y Tánger. Se conocieron en el Club Puerto Azul y su enlace fue un cruce de cultura y costumbres. Padres de Valery, Alex y Tiffany y abuelos de dos hermosas nietas. En 2018, tras el fallecimiento de su padre y el estado delicado de su madre, deciden mudarse a Miami, donde además de compartir con su familia, está realizando un Bachelor de Estudios Judaicos. Dopo la crisi sanitaria che per tre anni ha ridefinito l'approccio comune al debito e agli investimenti comuni per superare gli effetti sull'economia, la guerra avviata dalla Russia di Putin in Ucraina il 24 febbraio scorso ha prodotto una rivoluzione umanitaria. E' una vera e propria nuova idea di Europa. Un'unità che si realizza nel sostegno diretto ai profughi, ma anche nella rapidità con cui le istituzioni hanno risposte alle criticità. approvando ad esempio la Direttiva 55 del Consiglio dell'Unione europea che consente ai profughi di ottenere la cosiddetta protezione temporanea, evitando che le procedure per la tradizionale richiesta di asilo mandino in tilt la burocrazia dell'accoglienza nei singoli paesi.

A Ucrânia não é apenas rica em produtos agrícolas e recursos minerais. A história do país tem odisseias envolvendo tribos eslavas, czares e cossacos. Os rastros estão em monumentos que testemunham esses períodos. Mas com a invasão russa, a Unesco teme pela preservação desses tesouros. A Ucrânia possui nada menos que sete sítios inscritos no patrimônio cultural mundial da Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura, além de outros em lista indicativa da entidade. Temendo pela integridade dessas relíquias, a Unesco lançou um alerta público, pedindo respeito ao direito internacional humanitário, em particular a Convenção da Haia de 1954 para a Proteção de Bens Culturais em Caso de Conflito Armado e seus dois Protocolos (1954 e 1999), para garantir a prevenção de danos ao patrimônio cultural da Ucrânia em todas as suas formas.  “Devemos preservar o patrimônio cultural da Ucrânia, não só como testemunha do passado, mas também como fermento da paz e da coesão pelo futuro”, declarou a diretora geral da Unesco, Audrey Azoulay. A entidade diz que tem estado em contato permanente com instituições culturais e profissionais no país para tentar avaliar a situação e reforçar a proteção dos bens culturais. “Até o momento, as informações que a Unesco conseguiu colher nos permite perceber que o patrimônio cultural do país começa a sofrer danos, como resultado do conflito em curso”, explicou à RFI o diretor do centro do patrimônio mundial da Unesco, Lazare Eloundou Assomo. “Estamos vendo esse conflito se aproximar cada vez mais de Kiev, que é uma cidade inscrita no patrimônio mundial da Unesco - a cidade tem uma catedral magnifica, a catedral de Santa Sofia, além de um conjunto de edificações monásticas e um mosteiro”, relata Assomo. “É o berço da igreja ortodoxa russa; se esse sítio for atingido nos próximos dias, acho que será uma perda para a humanidade inteira, não apenas para o povo ucraniano”, lamenta. Tesouros em risco Além dos dois sítios inscritos na Unesco em Kiev, há um na Crimeia, região anexada à Rússia em 2014. Trata-se de vestígios de uma cidade fundada pelos gregos dóricos no século 5 a.C., na costa norte do mar Negro. Por enquanto não há informações sobre danos no sítio, informa o representante da Unesco. A lista conta ainda com o centro histórico de Lviv, cidade fundada no final da Idade Média, preservada – por enquanto - de forma praticamente intacta. Ainda na lista da Unesco estão o Arco geodésico de Struve, as antigas florestas primarias de faias (que abrange Alemanha, Eslováquia e Ucrânia), a residência dos Metropolitas da Bucovina e Dalmácia, em Chernivtsi, e Tserkvas (igrejas) de madeira da região dos Cárpatos. “Há sítios inscritos na lista indicativa da Ucrânia e que estão previstos para serem incluídos na lista do patrimônio mundial da Unesco, como o centro histórico de Chernihiv, que é muito importante”, relata o diretor do centro do patrimônio mundial da Unesco. “Há também cidades de efervescência criativa, com uma vida cultural vibrante até o início das hostilidades, como é o caso de Kharkiv”, acrescenta Assomo. “Teatros e instalações culturais foram certamente destruídos, a vida cultural desapareceu”, lamenta. “Há museus que fazem parte do circuito cultural que existe em toda a Ucrânia, todos muito ricos em história que também foram atingidos; há pinturas que foram queimadas.”

At this point, there aren't too many “hidden gems” left in the world for savvy travelers and history geeks alike, but the Painted Churches of Moldavia may just be one of the last. My guest today is Ciprian Slemko, a guide with Hello Bucovina, which provides tours to the historical region that splits between the northern region of Romania, and the southern region of Ukraine. The eight churches that make up the core of the painted churches were all built in the late 15th century through the late 16th century, and provide a time capsule the rich history of the region, from the Middle Ages through communist rule all the way to today. And there's no better tour for that trip, than Chip. Stephen the Great's great achievement The Romanian king Stephen the Great first came up with the idea of building the gorgeous monasteries in his country in the 15th century. He built some 40 churches, but as Chip told me, he didn't actually have the exterior paintings done because he was too busy warring with the Ottoman Empire every six months. It was actually his son, the Moldavian prince Petru Rares, who came up with the idea. After traveling to Florence, Italy Petru Rares wanted the churches his father built to have the same artistic grandeur. And it was this combination, the father's devoutness, and the son's appreciation for art, that combined to create the most impressive of all of the churches: Voronet. Voronet: The Sistine Chapel of the East The crown jewel of the painted monasteries is Voronet, often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of the East. Chip told me that people began calling the monastery that in the 18th century after its reputation traveled around Europe. It's known for its deep, beautiful blue—actually called Voronet Blue—which was created using azurite and lapis lazuli rocks. An enormous fresco of the Last Judgment adorns the western exterior of the building, but there are paintings all around the church. Chip told me Petru Rares's wanted to deepen the people's understanding of the Bible in an age when few could read or write, so the paintings were designed to tell the stories of the Book. And each church got its own predominant color, making visiting these buildings a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Standing strong during turbulent times What's amazing about the buildings is that they've stood for more than 500 years, and you can still visit and appreciate their beauty. They've stood through the political shifts, with the land changing hands, and the many wars over the centuries. And they even stood was under communist rule. But as Chip told me, the people of Romania are survivors, and they resisted under the watch of the government, still attending church, and the Orthodox Church still held services. And it's true that when I visited the region, not only were the people who lived there some of the nicest I've encountered, I could also get a sense of their devoutness. As Chip said, it's truly a beautiful land with beautiful people. How to See the Painted Churches of Moldavia The eight painted churches of Moldavia are spread throughout a large region, almost a circle of 250 kilometers, and it would take a few days to see them all. But Chip has a better plan: He's mapped out a route that will take you to see four of the most beautiful churches, including Voronet. And you can hear how to route that trip on this episode. Of course, you won't just want to see the churches if you go to this beautiful part of the world, and Chip lays out all of the options for what else you can do, from rafting to skiing.
