There's something about music that cuts deeper than words alone. A single lyric, a familiar melody, or even the rhythm of a beat can stir memories we thought were long forgotten and awaken parts of ourselves we may have buried. It reminds us of who we were before the chaos, before the pain, before substances clouded our vision. Pursuing our favorite hobbies before substance use can be a lifeline back to our core, a way of reclaiming the truest version of ourselves. Listen in as our guest this week shares how he turned his lifelong passion into purpose and found a way back home to himself. Skyler Ray was born on November 28, 1990, in San Jose, California. He grew up in foster homes and spent multiple years homeless—going from being locked up to sleeping on the sidewalks of downtown Portland. His music is deeply rooted in his life experiences, including addiction, incarceration, and homelessness. He is a firm believer in spreading hope and giving back to the community he once helped destroy. Since being released from prison on November 30, 2018, Skyler has refocused on his music and is determined to share his message with the world. He continues to live in Portland, Oregon, and remains clean and sober. In this conversation, Jamie Demeris and Skyler Ray discuss what it really takes to rebuild a life after addiction. Together, they explore the mindset shifts that turn relapse into resilience, why consistency and small steps matter more than giant leaps, and how reconnecting with your passions can anchor you in sobriety. Skyler shares how music became both his therapy and his message, and why vulnerability and self-respect are the foundation of lasting recovery. Whether you're in recovery, supporting a loved one, or just searching for hope, this conversation will remind you that transformation is always possible. Topics Discussed: The importance of continuously working on yourself Why relapse isn't a step back and how you can stand up stronger Pursuing your passions and who you are at your core in sobriety Why small, consistent steps make the most impact Reconnecting with your why & remembering who you were before substances Learning to love and respect yourself — CHAPTERS: 0:00 Introduction to Positive Recovery MD 01:10 Meet Skylar Ray: From Addiction to Recovery 02:16 Skylar's Battle with Addiction 03:56 Turning Point: Embracing Music and Sobriety 12:50 The Road to Recovery Tour 19:35 Overcoming Disbelief and Embracing Change 22:54 Climbing the Corporate Ladder 23:43 A Humbling Demotion 24:17 Prison Reflections and Personal Growth 26:22 Musical Journey and Personal Transformation 29:14 The Power of Sound and Recovery 33:23 Chasing Dreams and Overcoming Challenges 40:33 Tour Dates and Final Thoughts — Connect with Skyler Ray: Road to Recovery Tour: https://www.officialskylerray.com/road-to-recovery-tour Website: www.officialskylerray.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/therealSkylerRay — Connect with PRC on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter LI: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Want even more expert insights and support on the recovery journey? California's agricultural and transportation sectors are once again in the spotlight as state and federal policies clash, pests resurface, and long-delayed water projects inch forward. On today's AgNet News Hour, hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill broke down the latest developments impacting farmers, truckers, and communities across the state. EPA Pushes Back on California Trucking Regulations The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it is moving to block California's latest heavy-duty vehicle inspection and maintenance rules for out-of-state trucks. The proposal argues that California's requirements conflict with the U.S. Constitution's Commerce Clause and the federal Clean Air Act. While the EPA's move may protect out-of-state truckers, California-registered fleets remain subject to the state's stringent standards. The hosts noted that this could accelerate a trend of trucking companies relocating to border towns like Reno, Nevada or Yuma, Arizona, where operating costs and regulations are far lighter. “Business is leaving California every day, and we're seeing the impact across industries,” Papagni warned. Imperial Valley vs. Yuma Lettuce Claims Listeners also weighed in on the ongoing debate between Imperial Valley and Yuma over winter lettuce production. While Yuma promotes itself as producing 90% of the nation's winter leafy greens, growers in Imperial Valley point out that much of the produce is still grown in California. Packers relocating across the Arizona border, they argue, are skewing the numbers. Medfly Quarantine in Santa Clara County In pest control news, officials detected two Mediterranean fruit flies in San Jose, triggering a quarantine in Santa Clara County. Medflies pose a devastating threat to fruit and vegetable crops, and the state is deploying a sterile male release program to contain the spread. The discovery highlights the ongoing vigilance needed to protect California agriculture from invasive species. Sites Reservoir Funding Boost Finally, there was a rare bit of good news for water storage. The Sites Reservoir Project received an additional $218.9 million in funding, raising its total eligibility to $1.094 billion. While construction is not expected to begin until 2026, with operations projected for 2032, the move signals renewed confidence in expanding storage capacity under Proposition 1, first approved by voters in 2014. Papagni summed up the sentiment shared by many farmers: “It's good to see progress, but California needs common-sense leadership to turn voter-approved projects into real water on the ground.”
John Doll lives in San Francisco. His novel, "St. James Park," is a 1933 noir set in San Jose, about a kidnapping of a department store heir. It came out August 19th, 2025.

What if the fabric of our world isn't a sealed container, but a fragile web—pocked with rips, folds, and doorways into somewhere… else? Across the globe, witnesses have described stepping into spaces where the air thickens, time bends, and impossible entities appear without warning. These moments, fleeting yet unforgettable, hint at the existence of portals—dimensional gateways linking our reality to hidden realms. In this episode of Phantoms & Monsters Radio, we'll delve into chilling, first-hand encounters that challenge the boundaries of belief: a California farm stalked by a colossal biped, a Montana experiencer targeted by robotic and extra-dimensional visitors, a Wisconsin home where robed figures rose from a glowing floor, a San Jose cemetery visit interrupted by a diving bat-like humanoid, and a Texas rally where a woman vanished from a locked porta-potty without a trace. Each account forces us to confront the possibility that our perception of reality is incomplete. These reports come from diverse times and places—orchards, cemeteries, forest trails, quiet homes—but share unsettling similarities: sudden appearances and vanishings, bilocation, objects re-materializing from nowhere, and encounters with entities that defy classification. Are these random anomalies, or the signs of persistent and intentional portals? Could they be natural phenomena, hidden technologies, or constructs of an interdimensional intelligence? From subtle shifts in time to face-to-face meetings with beings that seem part human, part machine, tonight we follow the trails left by witnesses who have stumbled too close to the edges of our dimension. As we look over these extraordinary accounts, we'd like to ask you to consider a question: if portals exist all around us, what might be waiting on the other side?

Multifamily construction is slowing after the pandemic building boom—and it could shift the rental market back in landlords' favor. In this episode, we break down Redfin's latest analysis showing a 23% drop in permits nationwide, the metros still leading in new apartment construction, and the regions seeing the steepest declines. From Sun Belt hotspots like North Port and Austin to West Coast slowdowns in Stockton and San Jose, we'll explore what's driving the shift, how it's impacting rents, and where investors should be watching next. Send us a textThe rental market has reached a pivotal turning point that smart investors can't afford to ignore. After more than two years of stagnant or declining rents, we're witnessing the biggest year-over-year jump in apartment rents in two and a half years. At $1,790, the median asking rent has climbed 1.7% since last July – and this is just the beginning of what could be a significant upward trajectory. What's behind this shift? A perfect storm of economic factors. Homeownership remains financially out of reach for many Americans, pushing more people into rentals. Simultaneously, multifamily construction has hit the brakes – permits are down 23% nationally since the pandemic building boom. This supply-demand imbalance is handing power back to landlords after years of tenant-favorable conditions. The geographic patterns tell an equally compelling story. San Jose leads with an astounding 8.8% rent increase while its building permits plummeted 74%. Chicago, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia all saw rent jumps exceeding 7.5%. Meanwhile, markets like Jacksonville and Austin, where construction continues aggressively, are experiencing rent decreases. Perhaps most revealing is the unit size data: studios and one-bedrooms are up 3.4%, while three-plus bedroom units fell 1.5% – clear evidence of changing demographic preferences as younger generations delay family formation. For multifamily investors, these signals demand action. With Gen Z (larger than the Boomer generation) entering prime renting age and construction slowing, we're heading toward an even more severe housing shortage in the next 2-3 years. Don't let higher interest rates keep you on the sidelines – you can refinance later, but the opportunity to secure properties before this supply crunch fully materializes won't wait. Story of the Week (DR):Trump Demands Intel CEO's Resignation, Says He's ‘Highly CONFLICTED' AND Eric and Donald Trump Jr. to Own Millions of Shares in New U.S. Manufacturing SPAC MMESG Analyst Tom Cotton: Trump's attack, posted on Truth Social Thursday, came two days after GOP Sen. Tom Cotton flagged Tan's prior investments in Chinese companies and his previous leadership at Cadence Design Systems, which recently pleaded guilty to unlawfully selling its tech to a blacklisted military university in China.Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan (~$70M golden hello in March; max potential $400M) directly addressed employees on Thursday after Donald Trump demanded his resignation over national security concerns, saying he has the full support of the board.Tan set up a venture firm called Walden International based in San Francisco that pumped more than $5 billion into over 600 companies. More than 100 of those investments were made in China, including deals with once-obscure startups such as Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.—today China's largest chipmaker—where he served on the board for a decade and a half.Today, the executive is still chairman of Walden International. And he's the founding managing partner at Walden Catalyst Ventures, which focuses on investments in the U.S., Europe and Israel. The executive, who had previously served on the board, went on to take the permanent CEO job the next year. He stayed in the role until 2021, when he transitioned to executive chairman, and is widely credited with restoring the company's fortunes. In late July of this year, the Department of Justice announced a plea deal that cost Cadence more than $100 million in fines. While this is reassuring, especially considering the amount of change we've navigated as a company recently, it wasn't a surprise to me that we fell short of our engagement goal.TRANSLATION: I'm not surprised so many of you think we suck, I've been here 5 years as CEO and I'm not awesome at my job… but hold your breath while I tell you how it's your faultThis note may also help you identify areas where your professional expectations might be misaligned with the strategic direction of this company.TRANSLATION: It's your faultI understand that some of you may have started your tour with this company expecting an "employment deal" rooted in loyalty, tenure, and conformance with the associated compensation, work structure, and benefits. We have consciously shifted away from some of these elements and towards a more market-based culture — focused on rewarding capability, contribution, and commitment.TRANSLATION: Fuck your job, this is a meritocracy now. A manly meritocracy.I understand that many may find the demands of your daily lives challenging and difficult. Elder care, job stress, child rearing challenges, economic uncertainty, community unrest, technology anxiety — the list can get long…We run a dynamic, customer-facing business, tackling large-scale, challenging initiatives. If the requirements dictated by this dynamic do not align to your personal desires, you have every right to find a career opportunity that is suitable to your aspirations and needs. That said, if a self-directed, virtual, or hybrid work schedule is essential for you to manage your career aspirations and life challenges, you will have a difficult time aligning your priorities with those of the company and the culture we aim to establish.TRANSLATION: We know your life is hard, but shut the fuck up about it because I don't care.WHERE THE FUCK IS THIS BOARD?Here are the “go hard or go home” board membersBill Kennard, lead "independent" director connected in 13 loops to other directors, been there for 11 years, who got his undergrad in communications from Stanford and worked at the FCC and was an ambassador - proving once again that “communications” isn't a qualification for communicating?Marissa Mayer - maybe this business thing isn't for you? “Orogenesis” is the geologic process of mountain building — a gradual evolution powered by unfathomable forces that expand across and transform broad swaths of the landscape.Orogenesis is also set to be the longest mountain biking trail in the United Sates. At 3,500 miles, this new route stretches through Washington, Oregon, California, and then it connects to the existing Baja Divide bikepacking route to add another 1,600 miles to San Jose del Cabo at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. The creation of such a trail is an absolutely monumental vision, and endurance cyclist Kurt Refsnider will be guinea pigging his way down the full length of it for the remainder of this year as the first person to attempt the ride in its entirety. In this episode, we talk to Kurt Refsnider about the history of the trail, what drew him to it, and what to expect along the way. We'll then be checking in with him over the next few months as he makes his way from the US/Canadian border to Mexico.

A hospice volunteer from San Jose shares two chilling encounters that blur the line between the living and the dead. On a routine flight, a flight attendant sees a mysterious captain exit the lavatory—then walk straight through the cockpit door. Later, in a cemetery, a furious man is spotted digging a hole in khakis and a dress shirt… only to vanish without a trace moments later. Was the pilot still flying long after his final descent? And who—or what—was the man in the graveyard? Two ghostly encounters, each raising more questions than answers.
