It's been four years since Donald Trump's supporters stormed the US Capitol, trying to overturn the result of the 2020 election. Now, his win in last year's election is about to be ratified in that very building, giving him the power to pardon convicted rioters. Former President Donald Trump repeatedly declined in an interview aired Sunday to answer questions about whether he watched the Capitol riot unfold on television, saying he would “tell people later at an appropriate time.”  Trump, the current front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, refused to say on NBC's “Meet the Press” how he spent Jan. 6, 2021, once the insurrection began and whether he made phone calls as his supporters stormed the seat of American democracy.  “I'm not going to tell you. I'll tell people later at an appropriate time,” Trump told moderator Kristen Welker after she asked if he spent that afternoon watching the attack on television in a dining room at the White House.  Trump's former aides have said he sequestered himself in the room off the Oval Office to watch, at times even rewinding and rewatching some parts.  In the interview, taped Thursday at Trump's golf club in New Jersey, Trump refused to say who he called as the violence unfolded. “Why would I tell you that?” he said.  Trump said in response to Welker's pressing him about his public silence during the violence that he had made “beautiful statements" on the day of the attack.  Trump's supporters, fueled by his lies about the 2020 presidential election, stormed the building as Congress prepare to certify the victory of Democrat Joe Biden. Trump is facing federal criminal charges for his efforts to overturn his loss in that election but he is not facing charges related to the insurrection.  Trump said he might consider pardoning some of the rioters charged for their actions that day.  More than 1,000 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the Jan. 6 riot and more than 600 have pleaded guilty or been convicted.  “I'm going to look at them, and I certainly might if I think it's appropriate" to pardon them, the former president said.  Trump also said he would consider pardoning former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison orchestrating a failed plot to keep Trump in power. Trump said Tarrio was treated “horribly," according to a full transcript of the NBC interview, which included parts that were not aired.  Trump is facing 91 criminal charges across four cases in federal and state courts related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, the mishandling of classified documents and charges related to allegations of hush-money paid to cover up extramarital affairs. He has denied wrongdoing.  Trump was asked if he fears going to jail.  “No, I don't really. I don't even think about it. I'm built a little differently I guess,” he said.  As he pushed to overturn the election, Trump relied on a band of outside allies who undertook what federal prosecutors have called a “criminal scheme” to fraudulently overturn the 2020 results instead of relying on the advice of attorneys in the White House who urged him to accept his loss to Biden.  Trump was asked in the interview why he didn't listen to those lawyers.  “I didn't respect them,” Trump said.  “In many cases, I didn't respect them. But I did respect others. I respected many others that said the election was rigged.”  Trump said he was listening both to his instincts and “different people” to guide his actions around the election's results.  The NBC appearance was Trump's first broadcast network interview since leaving office and marked Welker's debut show as host.  Trump also said he was pleased to hear Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent remarks praising Trump for suggesting that he were elected to the White House again, he would negotiate an end to Russia's war in Ukraine. Putin on Tuesday said Trump's statements were “good” and brought “happiness.”  “Well, I like that he said that. Because that means what I'm saying is right,” Trump said on NBC.  Trump said he had had a good relationship with Putin, something he has said several times before, and denied that any deal he would seek in Ukraine would be a win for Russia and allow it to keep territory it has seized.  “That's something that could have been negotiated,” Trump said. He went on and said, “They could have made a deal where there's lesser territory right now than Russia's already taken, to be honest.”  Trump repeatedly declined to say whether he would support a federal ban on abortion and he criticized a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy that was signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, one of Trump's top rivals in the presidential primary.  “I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake," Trump said.  Trump said he did not care whether abortion was ultimately banned at a federal level or settled by laws in each state. The U.S. Supreme Court, with the support of three justices appointed by Trump, last year overturned the federal right to an abortion.  “From a pure standpoint, from a legal standpoint, I think it's probably better” to be handled at the state level, Trump said.  “But I can live with it either way. And they sent an unmistakable message to American democracy. Chitra Ragavan: Hello everyone, I'm Chitra Ragavan. And this is Techtopia. On this podcast, we take a look at the addictive and inexorable forces of technology that are transforming people, society and humanity. I'm joined now by Anne Speckhard. She's director of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism. Speckhard has interviewed hundreds of terrorists around the world and has provided expert consultation to the US, European and other governments, as well as the US Department of Defense regarding programs for prevention and rehabilitation of individuals that are committed to political violence and militant jihad. Speckhard has worked extensively with social media platforms, such as Facebook, to create and disseminate counter radicalization messaging against ISIS and other foreign terrorist groups. Anne, welcome to Techtopia. Anne Speckhard: Oh, thank you, Chitra. I'm so glad to be here with you. Chitra Ragavan: As an expert on radicalization, when you saw what was happening on January 6th, both outside and inside the US Capitol, what were your first thoughts? Anne Speckhard: My thoughts were what had been predicted was happening because I'm part of a number of groups that were monitoring and trying to diffuse violence from groups, such as this, before it happened. And, to me, it had been predicted and I was watching it play out. Chitra Ragavan: And over the past months and years, what were some of the things that you are seeing? I know your focus has been predominantly of radicalization of foreign terrorist groups, such as ISIS. But I'm assuming you probably were seeing similar things unfold here in the United States. Anne Speckhard: Definitely. We were seeing groups forming on the internet or forming in real life as well. And what I would say we were really seeing is that online behavior and online threats were moving into real life, which is exactly what we saw with ISIS. That there was a huge amount of propaganda, and incitement. And that we watched people get wrapped up in it. And some of them, oftentimes, they went dark because they would transfer over to telegram. And then, you would see them do something. So, what was happening and being observed on their Facebook or Twitter profile would later translate into real life behavior. Anne Speckhard: But we should say that there were huge groups of people who were responding to this ISIS' online propaganda that never did anything. Chitra Ragavan: Interesting. So, what do you think was the trigger? What happened? Anne Speckhard: Well, I would definitely say that President Trump incited this mob and he had been inciting them all along with what pundits are now referring to as the "big lie" of telling them that the election was stolen, and that they must stand up for democracy. And these are people, I mean, there are a whole array of people, they're not a monolith. But these are people that already believe that white rights are being stolen, they're disenfranchised, they're upset. And if they're a conspiracy theorist and QAnon, they believe that Trump is going to stand up to evil power...

      On a day that will mark US history as one of the darkest days, a group of Pres. Trump supporters rioted the Capitol Hill building on the day that the congress was set to certify the presidential election that Joe Biden won on Nov. 3rd, 2020 in a violent attempt to overturn his defeat. After breaching multiple police perimeters, they occupied, vandalized, and ransacked parts of the building for more than four hours. The insurrection, that was infuriated by Pres. Trump himself weeks before and in a rally right before it happened, led to the evacuation and lockdown of the Capitol building and disrupted a joint session of Congress assembled to count the electoral votes and formalize Joe Biden's election victory. The result of that riot was a significant damage to the capitol building, looting of many properties including two laptops one of which belongs to the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi that contains high classified government data, the delay of one of the most important Democratic processes in the USA and most importantly the loss of 5 lives including one of the Capitol's Police officers and one rioter who was a decorated US veteran. On this podcast, we take a look at the addictive and inexorable forces of technology that are transforming people, society and humanity. Joining me now is the historian, Joseph Coohill. He's the producer and host of the popular Professor Buzzkill History Podcast, which addresses misconceptions and misunderstandings in history. Professor Coohill earned his doctorate in history from the University of Oxford in 1998 and has taught at universities in Britain and the United States. Joe, welcome to Techtopia. Joseph Coohill: Well thank you for having me on the show and I love the idea of Techtopia. It's a great podcast. Chitra Ragavan: Thank you. When you watched that riotous mob sacking the US Capitol last week, with your knowledge of modern world history, what were the first thoughts that came to your mind? Joseph Coohill: Well, it followed very similar patterns to other sorts of mobs that flock together and act together based on essentially very, very shallow and already discredited information. It was mob mentality. Most of the people who were there didn't know much beyond the idea that, "Oh, I believe Trump and Trump believes this." They weren't necessarily deep QAnon encyclopedic people, but, and that's very, very common. It's much easier to stir up emotions and have people rush to physically attack some place than it is to say, "Oh, okay, let's sit down and have a discussion about this." So it looked to me an awful lot, like as the media has portrayed it, as the Reichstag and various other things. And a lot of people stormed the Berlin Wall in 1989, for instance, who weren't necessarily anti-East Germany. They were just, it was a big mob and they wanted to get their sledgehammers out and did so. So it's a very, very common thing in history, unfortunately, but it's one of these things we constantly have to contend with. Chitra Ragavan: Were you surprised that it actually happened here in America? Joseph Coohill: Well, yes and no. Yes, because I would have thought, given that there had been so many protests in 2020 and that the police presence and the military presence around the BLM protests in 2020 had been so strong and there had been some rings around Lincoln Monument and rings of national guards being around the Capitol, that that would have been taken care of beforehand. So I'm not surprised that it happened here. I am surprised that it was that there was a kind of incompetent response by the security forces, if you will, not to be ready for it. Chitra Ragavan: There were people there from many different groups, many different beliefs, many different, who believed in a lot of different conspiracies. And before we kind of delve into that, I know you like to make this clarification between conspiracies, conspiracy theories, conspiracy mongering. What's that clarification? Joseph Coohill: Well, yeah, I think this is a real problem because after all, a conspiracy is just a group of two or more people who get together and decide to do something and not tell anyone else about it. They do it in secret. In fact, the word conspiracy comes from two Latin words, con and spire, which means to breathe together.

Donald Trump has made history, becoming the first president to be impeached twice by The House. The president was charged with “incitement of insurrection” and 10 Republicans joined with Democrats in the vote to impeach. The next step is a trial in the Senate, but it looks unlikely that it will happen before Trump leaves office, leading to more questions. Julia Manchester, political reporter at The Hill, joins us for how it all played out. Next, the Trump administration has changed its vaccine rollout plans. It is now recommending for people over 65 and those with high-risk conditions such as heart disease or diabetes to get the vaccine immediately. They also want to send out more first doses without reserving the second shot, hoping more people can start the process. Dan Vergano, science reporter at BuzzFeed News, joins us for the rollout changes and concerns from the Biden administration about the new plan. Finally, as California battles the worst of the coronavirus pandemic and a slow vaccine rollout, Gov. Gavin Newsom is also facing a lot of criticism for his handling of the state. Newsom is facing growing support for an effort to recall him which got a boost after shutting down outdoor dining and a blunder of his own, getting caught eating out at a fancy restaurant. David Siders, national political correspondent at Politico, joins us for the challenges Gov. In this fresh episode, we talk about the shocks happening in the liberal democratic capitalist system--How the ruling class is destabilized by Trump and the far right actions at Capitol Hill this week, and how they are responding to maintain order and their own power as quickly as possible.  It's an analysis you won't find in many other places, if anywhere. Last week, we saw  former Veep and Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney(!) organize a statement by all ten living Secretaries of Defense to call on Trump and officials in the military establishment to call for  an orderly transition of power (he didn't). We saw the National Association of Manufacturers, a notorious anti-worker, anti-liberal Democratic institution, issue a statement calling for the swift enactment of the 25th Amendment of Donald Trump over inciting riots at the Capitol.
