On Tuesday, a memo that ordered the Freezing of Federals Funds for Grants and Hundreds of Programs set off a nationwide firestorm of confusion and complaints.  A group of non-profits sued to block the order from Trump's Office of Management and Budget.  And a Federal Judged paused the freeze temporarily.  A spokesman for the Trump Administration said the directive should not be interpreted as a complete funding freeze. The official, who was not authorized to discuss the internal memo publicly, said that agencies should review their grants, loans, and programs to ensure they align with the new administration's priorities. This is a developing story. I will be posting updates on YouTube and TikTok.  And today and tomorrow, two Senate Committees will question Robert Kennedy Jr., Trump's nominee to run the Department of Health and Human Services.  On Tuesday, Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, wrote a letter to Senate leaders asking them to reject her cousin's nomination.

Hosts: Leah Murray and Rusty Cannon Analyzing the motivation, effects of new ad for Brian King and Phil LymanA new campaign ad for Democrat Brian King features former GOP gubernatorial candidate Phil Lyman. Both King and Lyman come together with a singular message: do not re-elect current Governor Spencer Cox. It’s a message that’s shocked many on both sides of the aisle. The KSL at Night hosts try to figure out why Lyman would join in a video with King in a way that appears to show an endorsement (Lyman has since clarified that it was not an endorsement). Robert Axson, Chairman of the Utah Republican Party also joins to share his take on the whole situation. Republicans rallying around Governor Spencer CoxUtah Republicans – even those who have criticized Governor Spencer Cox in the past – are now rallying around his re-elect efforts. State Representative Kera Birkeland wrote a social media post explaining why she was supporting Cox, even though she’s been in agreement with Phil Lyman on many things in the past. She joins the program to explain more of her reasoning while also offering her take on the King/Lyman video ad. Utahns to vote on amendment that could change how food is taxedIn November, Utahns will vote on an amendment that could change how the state receives tax revenue. The state is asking voters to remove a constitutional earmark in order to give more flexibility to the budget. That change would remove a state tax on food, but it could also jeopardize funding for education. The KSL at Night hosts dig into what this amendment could mean for Utah’s budget and your pocketbook.  Speculating on coming changes to the U.S. Senate CommitteesSeveral changes could be coming to the U.S. Senate Committees following the November election. Folks will shuffle around between committees like the one on Foreign Relations or the one on Veterans’ Affairs. But one potential shift stood out to the KSL at Night hosts: Sen. Elizabeth Warren may take a top spot on the Banking Committee. The hosts give an insider look into what that could mean for the committee. Discussing the role of government in housing, using examples from ArgentinaThe president of Argentina has made many libertarian changes in the South American country, including the elimination of rent control on apartments. Since making that decision, housing has opened up drastically. Leaders here in the U.S. have made similar pushes for rent control – is that a good idea? The KSL at Night hosts discuss the issue with Steve Waldrip, Utah Senior Advisor for Housing Strategy and Innovation to get his take on housing issues in Utah. Controversy over gymnastics' medal from Paris OlympicsImagine getting an Olympic medal, only to be told you need to return it because an appeal was overturned. It’s what Team USA Gymnast Jordan Chiles is dealing with right now. There’s controversy over the entire ordeal, especially with regards to people on the appeals commissions and their ties to Romania, which ultimately received the bronze medal. The KSL at Night hosts finish the show breaking it all down for our listeners.

This week, we're talking to New Mexico Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth. We'll be talking about how he is approaching this year's 60-day session of the New Mexico Legislature. We'll take a look at many of the big-ticket items lawmakers are discussing as lawmakers set about crafting an historically large budget — one Wirth described as larger than any lawmaker, living or dead, has ever seen. Totaling $9.4 billion in recurring spending — an 11.9% increase from the last fiscal year — there is no shortage of ideas on how to best spend that money. And that doesn't include the one-time, nonrecurring funds that will be doled out this year. Unlike 30-day sessions, which happen in even-numbered years and are focused nearly exclusively on the state's budget, 60-day sessions allow any legislator in the House or Senate to introduce any bill they'd like. As a result, many are pitching their ideas to address some of the state's most pressing issues — education, public safety, early childhood development, bail reform, water conservation and energy, just to name a few. We'll talk to Majority Leader Wirth about all of those things and more. We'll also talk about the state's Land Grant Permanent Fund — sometimes referred to as the “rainy day fund” — which has long been closely guarded by legislators, though that may be changing. Well, maybe a little, anyway. Wirth, who has served in the legislature for 19 years, and in the Senate since 2009, currently serves as the vice chair of the Senate Committees' Committee and is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Tax, Business and Transportation Committee. This week, we're grateful to have Senate Majority Leader Wirth joining us.

He is an industry leader in the development of PC-based financial applications and interactive analytical tools that empower fund trustees to understand evaluate and strategize alternative solutions to their financial challenges with respect to pension funding, escalating healthcare costs, and investment strategy. Gene's ideas and achievements have been chronicled in many industry publications, Money magazine, and at the annual Business Week CFO Forum. He specializes in creating innovative real-time simulation decision tools for financial executives facing major strategic decisions with respect to pension funding, investment strategy, and health insurance. His clients have been primarily multi-billion dollar funds of major corporations, states, Taft-Hartley funds, U.S. federal agencies, and the governments of foreign countries. Gene applies a "hands on" approach in designing and developing evolving technology applications for clients. Staying actively involved in this dynamic field allows him to incorporate his depth of knowledge and experience to the applications being developed, enhancing them to be more effectively useful from an upper management perspective. In addition, he has extensive experience presenting actuarial concepts to large audiences who have little technical expertise. Gene has testified on several occasions before U.S. Senate Committees and regularly testifies before state legislatures and boards of trustees on behalf of the many state-wide pension funds he represents. After more than 21 years at Milliman where he established the firm's Washington office, in 1984 he became the firm's youngest Equity Principal. By 1990 he was the youngest Equity Principal to serve on the firm's Board of Directors. He joined Cheiron in November 2002. Prior to working at Milliman, Gene worked for two years at Towers Perrin. He began his actuarial career at the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation or PBGC where he spent nearly five years. Cheiron (pronounced ki´• ron) is an employee-owned, full-service actuarial and financial consultancy, advising a national client base of public employers, Taft-Hartley plans, non-profits and corporations, from offices in Washington, DC; Charlotte; Chicago; Philadelphia; New York; Portland, OR; Los Angeles; San Francisco; and San Diego. Our primary business is in the pension and health areas, where we help clients identify, measure, and monitor financial risks, and assist them in addressing those risks. At the heart of these services is our proprietary line of sophisticated "X-scan" modeling tools that allow clients to see, in real time, the nature and degree of financial risk they face, and determine when deeper analysis is needed. We stand behind our work, serving our clients with integrity, responsiveness and objectivity. Our only business is providing analysis and advice. We do not ask clients to accept limitations on our liability for the quality of our work. Our advice is objective, serving only our clients interests and will not be affected by conflicts with other corporate alliances, outside advisors, external oversight entities, or between management and labor. “It's a complicated issue. I think a lot of those bird disappearances come from the fact that we have massively intensified our agriculture. Large areas of North America and Europe are now under intense agriculture. They are sprayed with a whole variety of pesticides, which I think is also responsible for the fact that many insects have disappeared, so species that depend on farmland have clearly declined dramatically, but it isn't all birds and there is a piece of this complicated story that involves water birds. Herons and egrets and ducks. Those species both in North America and Europe, are now much more common than they were 30, or 40 years ago. It was a short show tonight, but we did a good one. Some headlines from around a world going insane: There is more evidence that COVID-19 Social Controls are slowly being converted into a full on mobilized world government effort to fight "climate change." Don Lemon and the Communist Front continue to show us all that civility will not stop the Left's drive to eliminate any and all dissenting voices from their End Game vision...but along the way, they also can't help but expose just how ignorant they are. Joe Biden has a hefty problem coming his way as multiple Senate Committees have published a report on a laundry list of unsavory dealings between Hunter Biden and foreign states and oligarchs -- will it matter? Then we take some calls and ask the question: What are some beliefs you have that even you think would sound insane if you told them to people? His research covers the reasons why species become extinct, how fast they do so, the global patterns of habitat loss and species extinction, and the management consequences of this research. His commitment to the interface between science and policy has lead to his testimony to both House and Senate Committees on the re-authorization of the Endangered Species Act. He has worked and taught in Africa for nearly 20 years on elephants, and most recently lions — through National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative — but always on topics that relate to the conservation of wildlife and the ecosystems on which they depend. On November 20, President Obama announced his intention to execute an Executive Order potentially offering deferred deportation for nearly five million illegal immigrants. Since that time, opposing forces have challenged the constitutionality of such actions. Perhaps the most significant challenge is a federal lawsuit filed by nearly 20 states. In it, they allege violations of Article 2 Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution as well as the Administrative Procedure Act. On this episode of Lawyer 2 Lawyer, host J. Craig Williams interviews former United States Senator Byron Dorgan and current New Mexico State Senator Steven Neville. Also participating by pre-recorded interview is current Texas State Senator Jose Rodriguez. Together, they discuss the constitutionality of President Obama's recent actions on immigration as well as the viability of the federal suit filed by the various states. Tune in to hear opposing views on the separation of families, burdens on the social welfare system, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. If you find this topic interesting, you may also want to listen to an earlier show about unaccompanied minor immigrants titled "Unaccompanied Minor Immigrants: Push and Pull Factors of Immigration." In addition, he is a visiting professor at Georgetown University lecturing on energy and environmental issues as well as a Senior Fellow with the Bipartisan Policy Center, a think tank in Washington DC.
