I'm preparing for my 5th-level Black Belt test. As part of the test, we have to create and perform a series of movements - with or without weapons - to show the Grandmaster and test board that we're capable at this level. Oh, and it has to be 100% unique and created from scratch. So this is high-stakes stuff. I know I need to come up with something that I've never done before. Ideas start coming to me and I dismiss them one by one, like train cars passing by. Then, it hits me! I'm a storyteller and an Improv performer. Even though this is a Martial Arts test, I need to tell a story that's never been told before. Now, this is already an unusual approach since most martial artists aren't thinking about going to the mat to tell a story. Yet in my case, it needs to happen because this is how I think and who I am. I come up with a fantastic narrative. I'm in Tokyo enjoying my tea when I go over to the window. Suddenly, intruder after intruder comes through it and attacks me! I started doing all types of maneuvers, using household items around me as weapons to disarm and dispose of the invaders. In the end, it's just me sipping on my glass of tea with all this carnage on the floor around me. And while I can't prove it, I swear I see a little moisture in the Grandmaster's eyes… and he normally doesn't show his emotions. And that's the power of a great story. You know you've done good when your audience can feel what you (or the characters in your story) feel. And that brings me to my special guest today, Sarah Jenkins, who is a master at bringing comedic stories to life without saying a word. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll learn how she does it through choreography and imagery and get answers to questions like: What makes comedic short-form storytelling so special? Why does harder not equate to being better in story form? How can you know why an organic joke (not written on the page) lands for an audience or not? And what kind of mistake should you avoid that a lot of storytellers and speakers make? What you will learn in this episode: What it means to be “in service of the joke” in comedic storytelling Why the steps you take as you tell your story don't matter What has to be in your story to make it memorable and effective Who is Sarah? Sarah Marie Jenkins is a California native residing in NYC. She has been dance captain and associate choreographer for numerous shows, as well as the choreographer for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix, Mr. Mayor on NBC, and Girls 5 Eva on Peacock. Recently, she starred as Peter Pan in the first ever remounting of Jerome Robbins Broadway at the MUNY, as well as in the Cathy Rigby version of the show (as her successor). Before that, Sarah was seen as Jennyanydots in the revival of CATS on Broadway. She has also been on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Law & Order: SVU, and performed on the Today Show and Bonnie Hunt Show. Her national tours and musical work include Legally Blonde, Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby, Guys & Dolls, Swing!, Can-Can, Honeymoon in Vegas, and The Nutty Professor (directed by Jerry Lewis). When she's not working on the stage or screen, Sarah has a successful photography business specializing in headshots for actors of all ages. Hannah Bonnett is an actress with a true love for musical theatre. One of the first gigs she ever booked was a production of Peter Pan. (The musical version) which was a show that truly opened her eyes to being in the business professionally. In fact, she grew up watching the Cathy Rigby version of the beloved musical, and has been a fan of it ever since she was a kid. Bonnett is also a huge fan of Grease and starred in a production of that musical in Nantucket where she played Rizzo. In fact, she even got to share the stage with John Travolta's sister, Annie during her time at Rydell High. To this day, she is a die hard Grease fan , and it will forever be her favorite musical of all time. Recently, Bonnett was cast in a new musical, Skates which starred Diana DeGarmo (featured in Season 1) and her husband Ace Young. Now, Bonnett's must recent accomplishment is starring as Elle Woods in the National Tour of Legally Blonde. In this show, she really invests in introducing/reintroducing this beloved character to a new generation of audiences. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jayme-starr/support

In this episode, member of the original Broadway cast, Stephen Hanan, analyzes the marketing genius of Sir Cameron Macintosh, the artistic originality of Trevor Nunn, and the indelible literary capability of T.S. Eliot which led to the lasting success of Cats. A breakdown of branding and merchandising efforts highlights the ways Cats created a market for the international mega-musical. "Just think of lovely things, and your heart will fly on wings..." Drew and Cassie are joined by Leah from YA Book Chat to discuss the 1954 musical version of Peter Pan! With music and lyrics by Jule Styne, Mark Charlap, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, and Carolyn Leigh, the original Broadway production starred Mary Martin as Peter Pan and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook. An adaptation of this production was televised in 1955, 1956, and 1960. Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby would eventually claim the role of Peter, and famously played the role on stage for over four decades. For this episode, we compare and contrast 1960 televised Mary Martin version and the 2003 production starring Cathy Rigby that was professionally filmed for A&E. Drew also bit the bullet and watched the 2014 Peter Pan Live! starring Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, and sprinkles in some of the changes they made - some bad, some good. We discuss the different Nanas, the medicine scene, Cathy Rigby's massive amounts of fairy dust, the differences between Martin and Rigby's portrayals of Peter, the too-slowly-evolving portrayal of Tiger Lily and her tribe, the enigma of Liza's presence in Neverland, "Oh, My Mysterious Lady" vs. Marooner's Rock, the Hamlet joke, the casting choices for Adult Wendy and Jane, and so much more!In this episode, we reference an interview with Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate regarding the 2014 Live production's rewrite of "Ugg-A-Wugg" to "True Blood Brothers." It's time to leave the rabbit hole behind and fly off to Neverland! Drew and Cassie give their final thoughts on Alice in Wonderland and its place in history before moving on to our next story, Peter Pan by Sir J. M. Barrie. This is by far the longest and most complex story we've looked at so far, so we work our way through the story's plot, along the way discussing Barrie's unique writing style, Peter as the embodiment of childhood, the rich details of the novel, the parallels between Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, the intentionality of symbolism, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, Wendy as a protagonist, the genius of saving Tinker Bell, and much more. You won't want to miss Drew's explanation of why this story means so much to him. Plus, we reveal the Peter Pan criteria and which retellings we'll be reading and watching this month! Next time, join us to discuss the 1954 musical version of Peter Pan! We will be primarily looking at the 1960 televised version starring Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard as well as the 2000 professionally filmed version starring Cathy Rigby and Paul Schoeffler. (And yes, we'll even touch on Peter Pan Live starring Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, but we don't consider it required viewing!) Join the discussion! This week, we welcome Kate Herzlin to discuss 1954's Peter Pan, directed by Jerome Robbins, and written by Mark "Moose" Charlap, Carolyn Leigh, Jule Styne, and Betty Comden & Adolph Green. Mary Martin played the role for years, followed by Cathy Rigby, and both produced celebrated televised versions. You might also remember the recent televised version with Allison Williams and Christopher Walken. Kate wrote the book of a new musical version of Peter Pan, and she talks with us about the history of the character, and we all discuss what this show did for children's musicals and TV musicals, while also discussing whether or not it's actually a good show. Trigger warning for a discussion of possible pedophilia near the end of the podcast. Once Jeremy begins talking about The Little White Bird, which is the J.M. Barrie story for which he invented the character of Peter Pan, you might want to skip the rest of the episode if you don't want to hear a quotation from the book which does not quite sit right to modern ears.
