My guest this week is the three-time Tony award-winning Broadway orchestrator Doug Besterman, whose 31 Broadway musicals include The Producers, Fosse, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and his very first show, the 1991 revival of Damn Yankees, to name only a few. During this current Broadway season, Besterman will achieve something unheard of in his field: he will have three big musicals — Death Becomes Her, Boop!, and Smash — all running simultaneously on Broadway. Making it even more remarkable, two of those shows began previews on the same night and now open on Broadway in the same week. Besterman's film credits include the live-action version of Beauty and The Beast and Frozen. TV credits include the Marc Shaiman/Scott Witman compositions for Smash, ABC's version of Annie, The Sound of Music Live, and Peter Pan Live. As Tony Award-winning choreographer Susan Stroman's orchestrator of choice, his work has been heard on Little Dancer (co-orchestrator with Larry Hochman) at The 5th Avenue Theatre and the Kennedy Center and Crazy for You at Chichester Festival and on the West End. His most recent regional work was the World Premiere of Schmigadoon at the Kennedy Center and Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil at the Goodman Theatre. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! Connor and Dylan are joined by Henry Gottfried (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, Waitress). Much like Cabaret's Ernst fatefully meeting Cliff on the train, Henry meets the twins on the pod for a serendipitous and lovely conversation. We go all in on Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club: gagging for Gayle Rankin, a gorgeous German accent, and what it's like for audiences to receive this story. Henry? A STAR. The boys also FINALLY get into Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department. Bonus track: Connor & Dylan & Henry & Oomfs. Additionally, Henry regales the twins with stories of growing up in an artistic environment in Tennessee, and a very unique Into the Woods Ring of Keys that even had the twins gagging. Hear all about Henry getting cast in NBC's Peter Pan: Live, going on tour with Pippin and Bright Star, and making pies with the original cast of Waitress (and live capture film!). We also chat about Henry's directing experiences, his adoration for Alyse Alan Louis, Dylan's addiction to The Notebook album, and Connor's Queer as Folk journey. "Just think of lovely things, and your heart will fly on wings..." Drew and Cassie are joined by Leah from YA Book Chat to discuss the 1954 musical version of Peter Pan! With music and lyrics by Jule Styne, Mark Charlap, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, and Carolyn Leigh, the original Broadway production starred Mary Martin as Peter Pan and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook. An adaptation of this production was televised in 1955, 1956, and 1960. Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby would eventually claim the role of Peter, and famously played the role on stage for over four decades. For this episode, we compare and contrast 1960 televised Mary Martin version and the 2003 production starring Cathy Rigby that was professionally filmed for A&E. Drew also bit the bullet and watched the 2014 Peter Pan Live! starring Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, and sprinkles in some of the changes they made - some bad, some good. We discuss the different Nanas, the medicine scene, Cathy Rigby's massive amounts of fairy dust, the differences between Martin and Rigby's portrayals of Peter, the too-slowly-evolving portrayal of Tiger Lily and her tribe, the enigma of Liza's presence in Neverland, "Oh, My Mysterious Lady" vs. Marooner's Rock, the Hamlet joke, the casting choices for Adult Wendy and Jane, and so much more!In this episode, we reference an interview with Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate regarding the 2014 Live production's rewrite of "Ugg-A-Wugg" to "True Blood Brothers." We encourage you to read the full interview, which can be found at https://indiancountrytoday.com/archive/adios-ugg-a-wugg-native-composer-updates-song-for-nbcs-peter-pan-live/ Next time, join us to discuss the YA steampunk dystopian novel Everland by Wendy Spinale. It's time to leave the rabbit hole behind and fly off to Neverland! Drew and Cassie give their final thoughts on Alice in Wonderland and its place in history before moving on to our next story, Peter Pan by Sir J. M. Barrie. This is by far the longest and most complex story we've looked at so far, so we work our way through the story's plot, along the way discussing Barrie's unique writing style, Peter as the embodiment of childhood, the rich details of the novel, the parallels between Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, the intentionality of symbolism, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, Wendy as a protagonist, the genius of saving Tinker Bell, and much more. You won't want to miss Drew's explanation of why this story means so much to him. Plus, we reveal the Peter Pan criteria and which retellings we'll be reading and watching this month! Next time, join us to discuss the 1954 musical version of Peter Pan! We will be primarily looking at the 1960 televised version starring Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard as well as the 2000 professionally filmed version starring Cathy Rigby and Paul Schoeffler. (And yes, we'll even touch on Peter Pan Live starring Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, but we don't consider it required viewing!) Join the discussion! When NBC aired "The Sound of Music Live" back in 2013, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron thought they were doing a one-off musical event — had no idea that they were reinventing a genre for a whole new generation. But it was a huge hit, leading to Peter Pan Live, The Wiz Live, Hairspray Live and most recently Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. IndieWire's TURN IT ON podcast recently sat down with Zadan and Meron to discuss the challenges of turning Jesus Christ Superstar into a live TV concert event, and how they wanted to honor Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's original intent of making it more of a concert. We also talked about how they plan to stage their next big show -- Hair -- including how they're incorporate the show's infamous nudity on NBC. And we also learned the latest on their plans to stage A Few Good Men and Bye Bye Birdie, as well as, yes, where things stand with bringing SMASH to broadway. But we began by discussing how Jesus Christ Superstar became their next big NBC event. (Music by Omar Khan and Hook Sounds.)
Rob Ashford is a stage director and choreographer. He is a Tony Award, Olivier Award, Emmy Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award winner. As a dancer, he made his Broadway debut in the 1987 Lincoln Center revival of Anything Goes starring Patti LuPone. Productions of The Most Happy Fella, Crazy for You, My Favorite Year, Victor/Victoria, and Parade followed. He won the 2002 Tony Award for Best Choreography for the Broadway musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. Additional Broadway choreography credits include the Roundabout Theatre production of The Boys from Syracuse, The Wedding Singer, Curtains, Cry-Baby, and Evita. Off-Broadway credits include Pardon My English, Bloomer Girl, A Connecticut Yankee, and Time and Again. For television, Ashford has choreographed tributes to Andrew Lloyd Webber, Barbra Streisand, Jerry Hermann, Meryl Streep, Barbara Cook, Shirley MacLaine, and Tom Hanks for The Kennedy Center Honors. He was stage director and choreographer of NBC's live television presentation, The Sound of Music Live!, and Peter Pan Live! His resume is so diverse it reads like the resumes of five different guys, from all over the world. And I got that one guy to talk to us about . . . How he started dancing when he was 20. That’s right. Not 2 . . .20! Why it’s a natural progression for Choreographers to become Directors. The difference with working with stars and how he makes them look great . . . even if they’ve never worked on stage before! How he creates steps for a character . . .and how that has nothing to do with dancing. Why it’s good to be afraid. They’ve put Broadway on the minds of millions and millions of people, and they sat down with me to talk all about why the theater is important, and . . . The lesson Joe Papp taught them about how to pick a project. Just what is happening with the Broadway production of Bombshell and when??? What Hollywood has taught them and what they think Broadway should learn. How they’ve managed to convince the biggest names in entertainment, from Barbra Streisand to Bette Midler, to do their stuff. Robert Greenblatt is an American television executive, former Chairman of NBC Entertainment and current Chairman of WarnerMedia Entertainment. He began his television career at the Fox Broadcasting Company, where he ran prime-time programming and developed such shows as the original Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place, The X-Files, and Party of Five. From 1997 to 2003, he was an award-winning producer of over a dozen series for various networks, including Six Feet Under. From 2003 to 2010, he was President of Entertainment for Showtime. Under his leadership, he developed and supervised award-winning shows like Weeds, Dexter, Californication, and The Tudors. As a theatrical producer, he developed the musical stage adaptation of 9 to 5, which was nominated for four Tony Awards. Under his watch, NBC is also the home of Smash, The Sound of Music Live, Peter Pan Live, the upcoming The Wiz . . . and who knows what other Broadway-themed entertainment Bob is cookin’ up? But whatever he’s got in mind, expect it to be good, and expect it to help continue to expand Broadway’s growin’ brand. And we owe him a big thank you for that. I was able to thank him in person when he came to our office for this enlightening podcast about Broadway, television and their juxtaposition. Listen in to hear Bob talk about . . . How does one get to be the Chairman of a network anyway? What he’d do differently if he were producing 9 to 5 again (Bob was the lead Producer of the Dolly musical). The reaction he got when he told his team he wanted to air a musical on NBC . . . live . . . and how he got the courage to do it anyway. Could a reality casting show work on network TV? How developing a television show is similar to developing a Broadway show. And lastly, you’ll hear a prediction at the end of the podcast from me, about how I expect Broadway to go through yet another growth period in a few years, and what will be the cause (hint, hint, it has something to do with today’s podcast guest).
