NICK MOSS BAND featuring DENNIS GRUENLING have been on a winning streak since 2016 when the blues guitar virtuoso and and harmonica wizard joined forces. Their self-made lucky streak continued into early 2019, when down-and-dirty guitarist Moss – a 30-year veteran of Chicago's take-no-prisoners rough and tumble West and South Side blues clubs – won the Blues Music Award (BMA) for Traditional Blues Male Artist Of The Year. Gruenling, one on the hottest players on the scene today, took the BMA for Best Instrumentalist – Harmonica. And now, with the odds heavily in their favor, they unleash their dynamic new album, ‘Lucky Guy!' on Alligator Records. JOAN SHELLEY is a songwriter and singer who lives near Louisville, KY, not far from where she grew up. She draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally-minded performers from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but she's not a folksinger. Her disposition aligns more closely with that of, say, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, or her fellow Kentuckian Tom T. Hall. Joan's last record placed on year-end lists at NPR Music, Aquarium Drunkard and Uncut Magazine, among others, and led to an appearance on Later… with Jools Holland, cover stories with Acoustic Guitar Magazine and Fretboard Journal, and more. A teaming of Big Star's Jody Stephens and LA-based singer songwriter Luther Russell, the song was released as a 7" single in June 2015. Brian and Bill use the context of Jody Stephens emergence as a songwriter within Big Star to talk about and frame the band's career over the intervening years that led up to this release. We talk about how the song's production is a little reminiscent of Stephens' former band, the great bass tones that come out of Ardent Studios, and how happy Brian is that Jody is stepping out on his own as a songwriter. Additionally, we read a very special email that had us floored and will lend a little insight to a few of the things we discussed on the #1 Record episode.

I am collapsed in utter exhaustion...here in my big, manly, comfortable black leather poppa chair in my living room. We just got back from our grand-daughter Cassie's wedding. What an ordeal. It has to have been the most spectacular pageant since the super bowl. She was gorgeous...although I think she is a little young to get married. I figure a daughter or grand-daughter should be at least in her mid-thirties before she even considers marriage, because if she starts planning the wedding when she's 35, she'll be almost ready for Social Security when the actual wedding occurs.

The scene is now set for Broadway’s big night, the 67th annual Tony Awards. The nominations were announced Tuesday and among the musicals up for the most awards are Kinky Boots, Matilda, Pippin, and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. The most-nominated plays include Golden Boy, Lucky Guy, Vanya and Sonja and Masha and Spike, The Nance and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood does a bit of Tony handicapping for you and names a few of the performers who were properly recognized and some who were, perhaps, unfairly overlooked by the nominating committee. Consider this your warm-up for the Tony Awards, which will be broadcast on June 9.

Tom Hanks is Broadway’s Lucky Guy

Tom Hanks, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, is making his Broadway debut in Lucky Guy, a new play by the late Nora Ephron. Directed by George C. Woolfe and now playing at the Broadhurst Theatre, Lucky Guy is a true New York story about Mike McAlary, a New York storyteller himself — a tabloid reporter for, variously, The Daily News and the New York Post. McAlary’s career waxed and waned, but waxed again just before his death in 1998 at age 41. Hanks stars as McAlary, with Maura Tierney as his wife and a strong cast of character actors from the worlds of film, TV and the stage. The production is also getting a lot of attention because it is the last work by writer and moviemaker Ephron, who died last year. But Hanks is the draw and he shoulders a big burden as a big-name actor and Broadway first-timer in the title role of a new play. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood lets us know how Hanks carries that load in Lucky Guy.
