Today we have a fascinating conversation with Christian ethicist David Gushee about the moral teachings of Jesus. Gushee has spent decades wrestling with how to faithfully apply Jesus' radical vision for the kingdom of God in our modern context. What struck me most in our discussion was Gushee's insistence that Jesus' ethics are not merely aspirational, but profoundly subversive to the status quo. Jesus challenges our assumptions about power, wealth, tradition, and social status - calling us to a radical reorientation of our values and priorities. Gushee highlights key themes like Jesus' concern for the marginalized, his critique of religious and cultural traditions that exclude, and his vision of freedom that is not beholden to the expectations of others. It's a challenging message, but one that Gushee believes the church desperately needs to recover if we are to faithfully follow in the way of Jesus. This is a conversation that will make you think deeply about what it means to live as a disciple of Christ in our modern world. Gushee doesn't offer easy answers, but he compellingly lays out Jesus' moral vision and invites us to wrestle with its radical implications. I found it both inspiring and convicting - I hope you will as well.Rev. Prof. Dr. David P. Gushee (PhD, Union Theological Seminary, New York) is Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University, and Chair of Christian Social Ethics at Vrije Universiteit (“Free University”) Amsterdam, and Senior Research Fellow, International Baptist Theological Study Centre.Gushee is the elected Past-President of both the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Christian Ethics, signaling his role as one of America's leading Christian ethicists. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of more than 29 books and over 175 academic book chapters, journal articles, and reviews. His most recognized works include Kingdom Ethics, and Changing Our Mind. His other most notable works are Introducing Christian Ethics, Still Christian, After Evangelicalism, Righteous Gentiles of the Holocaust, Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies and recently The Moral Teachings of Jesus. Altogether his books have sold over 100,000 copies and been translated into a dozen languages.David and his wife Jeanie live in Atlanta. It turns out that we've changed our minds about our lives as well. Heavy stuff, to be sure. Today's episode continues the series for Zach and Kevin where they talk to some experienced dentists about what things they've changed their mind about over the years. Today's episode features a discussion with Al about some things we've changed our minds about life in general. Zach has changed his mind about saving money for retirement. It's dumb to wait to do the cool stuff when you're retired. Al changed his mind about being fat. NOW is the time to pay attention to your health. It's way better not being fat. Kevin changed his mind about diet and exercise. He moves his body every day. Al changed his mind about waiting. Don't wait. Zach changed his mind about paying attention. Zach doesn't pay attention to current events now (outside of sports) and his mental health is so much better for it. What can you control? Kevin changed his mind about stuff vs. experiences. Experiences are better than getting stuff. Become a member of the Very Clinical Facebook group! It turns out that we've changed our minds on business stuff, too. Today's episode continues the series for Zach and Kevin where they talk to some experienced dentists about what things they've changed their mind about over the years. Today's episode features a discussion with Al about some things we've changed our minds about business, management and our dental practices! Al has changed his mind about demographics. They are important and there are places that you can practice that are easier than others. Kevin changed his mind about block/priority scheduling. Adding this has made all of the difference. Zach changed his mind about less expensive procedures. Scheduling productivity is important. Al has changed his mind about creating urgency. Having less hours available makes patients less likely to fail appointments. Kevin changed his mind about EFDA's. EFDA's make Kevin's office work. "Other people can be good with arts and crafts." Welcome back to the Changing Our Minds podcast. In this episode, Kayelyn came up with a great (surprising) idea... and by that we mean that she didn't tell Karrilee ahead of time! She calls it a 'soft launch' into Conspiracy Theories! LOL! She picked about 10 'consipracies' to just touch on real quick like. Some of them Karrilee had heard of and some, clearly, she had not! Then - as usual - they wrap up with their 3-2-1's: 3 Things They are INTO, 2 Things They are LOOKING FORWARD TO and 1 Thing They are OVER! Here they are: Karrilee's 3-2-1's 3 Things She is INTO: 1. Apples Never Fall on peacock 2. Dear Heart - (where she bought the softest Sweatshirt!) 3. Canva Pro - love using it for work and podcasting! 2 Things She is LOOKING FORWARD TO: 1. Tulip Festival in April 2. Rita Springer's new CD! (Now release date says "Summer 2024?) 1 Thing She is OVER: 1. Lack of church community Kayelyn's 3-2-1's 3 Things She is INTO: 1. Forrest Frank 2. Joey Malinaro - (modern Seinfeld mini episodes) 3. High School Musical Franchise 2 Things She is LOOKING FORWARD TO: 1. Yard Sale season 2. Summer Break 1 Thing She is OVER: 1. The definition of changing our minds is "having a new thought." It is natural to allow thoughts to come and go, responsive to the moment, without attachment to any thought. If we get stuck on a thought, though, we hold onto it. We think some things so often for so long that they seem more "real" to us. We all have ideas we assume are true because we've always thought them. We easily let go of passing thoughts and we change our minds all day long without even realizing it. In the face of habitual thoughts, though, it takes an insight to change. As we understand the true nature of thought, we increasingly lose attachment to our thoughts and live in the moment, easily changing our minds.Support the show
Sometimes it's good to talk about our own challenges. The occasional chat in which we discuss the sorts of things we've been facing can help to dispel any myths that other people have got things sorted, and can also give you ideas of how to reframe your own battles. In this episode we cover how important it is to keep reminding ourselves to not take things personally. We talk about a teen who has battled through numerous issues and come out looking like a swan. The key message is that we want our teens realise that it takes time to get there. She didn't pop out fully-formed, but the battles she's faced have made her far more powerful - and dare I say happier. We talk about how uncomfortable it can feel for us parents when our teen starts falling in love. We've covered the gritty 'teens having sex in our home', but this is more about the feelings we can experience as our child becomes romantically entangled. The final reflection covers how difficult and challenging it can feel to be presented with new facts which require us to change our mind about something we believe to be true. Let us know what you think; we always love feedback and any suggestions for new episodes.CHAPTERS:00:02:02 Not taking things personally00:05:47 Building resilience through hardship one step at a time00:14:53 The importance of practice00:16:43 Coping with your teen's first relationship00:20:21 Same-sex relationship00:29:32 The importance of being able to change your mind when you have new factsSupport the showThanks for listening. How do we protect it from reactionary authoritarian Christianity? On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Americans stormed the Capitol to prevent the certification of their political opponent's election. At the forefront were Christians claiming to act in the name of Jesus Christ and his supposed representative on earth, Donald Trump. How can this have happened? David P. Gushee tackles the question in this timely work of Christian political ethics. Gushee calls us to preserve democratic norms, including constitutional government, the rule of law, and equal rights for all, even as many Christians take a reactionary and antidemocratic stance. He analyzes where Christians have discarded their commitment to democracy and bought into authoritarianism in the US and several other countries, both historically and today. He urgently argues that to defend against reactionary and authoritarian Christians, we must revive and draw on our hard-won traditions of congregational democracy, dissident Black Christian politics, and covenantal theology. Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies makes a robust case for the defense of democracy from its enemies—including Christians—arguing for a renewed commitment to democracy on the part of Christians, by drawing on our own best traditions, not succumbing to mere secular liberalism. Any concerned Christian will leave this audio with eyes wide open to the dangers of our current form of political engagement. Listeners will gain insight into what democracy is truly meant to be and why Christians once supported it wholeheartedly—and should do so again.(*as an Amazon affiliate, I receive a small commission from purchases made)✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:- preacherboyspodcast.com- https://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/- https://twitter.com/preacherboysdoc- https://www.instagram.com/preacherboysdoc/To connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/preacher-boys-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

David Gushee is an influential Christian ethicist who famously changed his mind about LGBTQ Christians. His 2014 book Changing Our Mind (now in its third edition) has been celebrated and widely recommended as an honest and forceful reckoning with the ethical issues surrounding LGBTQ Christians and the church's complicity in their exclusion, neglect, and abuse. It is a powerful and well-researched chronicle of David's journey from a traditional stance to an inclusive one, a journey that he completed while remaining theologically conservative. We are honored that David agreed to speak with us about this important book, and we look forward to more conversations about his many others in the near future! The bourbon we tasted in this episode is Hardin's Creek Clermont. To skip to the interview, go to 11:32. The freedom to change my mind. We often get stuck in our lives because we think we can't change our minds or don't know how to do it. Let's explore how to change our minds when we get stuck in ideas or concepts that have been layered onto us as children and with which we identify. Perhaps we have become so identified with certain ideas in the view of friends and family that we can't move on. Let's look at the power of changing our minds and how we can do it.How to ponder our thoughts and ideas and how to question them.

Episode SummaryAuthoritarianism is on the rise all across the world. Here in America, the leading proponents of anti-democratic ideology are evangelical Christians who have been swept up in the cult of Donald Trump. Driven by a dominator theology and good old-fashioned white supremacy, conservative Christians can be counted on as the leading supporters of dictatorial politics. As Dr. David Gushee writes in his book Defending Democracy From It's Christian Enemies, “Our current democratic crisis reveals a need to revisit the very meaning of democracy…Concerned citizens should care about the direction of movement in their own country. Ours is trending in a bad direction.”And that trend is leading many Christians to embrace what Gushee describes as “Nazified Christianity.” Since the 1960's, much of American public life has been moving toward greater freedoms, greater inclusivity, greater access to power, self-determination, and wealth for underrepresented populations. The Civil Rights Movement, feminist movement, sexual revolution, LGBTQIA movement, and the #METOO Movement have leveled the playing field. And who does that threaten? White, male Christians who are reacting to those new freedoms with violence and extremism. So, how do we work to not only save our democracy from it's Christian enemies, but to awaken our friends and family who have been taken captive by the rise of totalitarianism and the despotism of the Republican Party? This scholarly, yet practical conversation provides you with the resources and tools to have transformational conversations about the politics of Jesus as well as helping to equip you with the action-steps to save democracy during this political season. This month on The Book Nook, we discuss a short but powerful rebuke of the way we have allowed technology to distort our life experiences. This book, which can easily be found on amazon, claims to address "how digital technology affects our children and disconnects us from reality and from each other". With plenty of scientific data and no shortage of insights, this brief 100 page book forces us to ask serious questions about what parts of our lives really matter. Has our use of tech gotten out of hand? Are we allowing our kids to bear the greatest consequences? What exactly does technology do to make our lives better? This conversation will help model an approach to assessing the value of technology and how to put it in its proper place in our lives. Find out as we journey through books that matter in The Book Nook!

Greetings, loyal listeners! We are into full summer mode now, but don't worry--more new episodes coming your way soon. We plan to work around our travel schedules and different pace of the summer months, and we will still have an episode for your listening pleasure every other week as has become our pattern. But we probably be alternating new episodes and replays throughout the summer--hopefully, you'll enjoy re-listening (or perhaps listening for the first time!) to some of our earlier episodes. And so, for today, one from the archives. In this episode, Dave kicks things off by sharing a story about how he has changed his mind about some things in education. We then have a robust conversation about the ways teachers probably should change their minds over time, which is a hallmark of learning, after all. We hope you'll enjoy and be blessed by this summer replay. Original episode including show notes here: https://hallwayconvos.podbean.com/e/episode-024-changing-our-minds/
