Mark Udall, former Democratic US Senator and House member from Colorado, comes from the famed Udall family of the Mountain West - including his father, Congressman Mo Udall, and uncle, former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall under both JFK & LBJ. But Mark Udall largely stayed away from politics until his mid 40s - having an entire career within the outdoor leadership organization Outward Bound. However, once he flipped the switch to politics, his ascent was rapid: elected to the Colorado State House in 1996, the US House in 1998, and the US Senate in 2008. In this conversation, Senator Udall talks his famous political family, his own early relationship to politics, and memories of 20+ years in elected office that span both highs and lows - with great stories and insights from someone with one of the most unique arcs in American politics. His work has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, Poets & Writers, Oxford American, Artemis Journal, Orion, Shenandoah, Appalachian Journal, Wind, and The Sun. He serves as co-editor of Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel. Minick's honors include the Jean Ritchie Fellowship in Appalachian Writing and the Fred Chappell Fellowship at UNC-Greensboro. Minick has also won awards from the Southern Independent Booksellers Association, Southern Environmental Law Center, The Virginia College Bookstore Association, Appalachian Writers Association, Radford University, and elsewhere. His poem “I Dream a Bean” was picked by Claudia Emerson for permanent display at the Tysons Corner/Metrorail Station. He's garnered grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, Augusta University, the Georgia Humanities Council, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. His newest book, The Intimacy of Spoons explores the many metaphors of the spoon: from love and marriage to the spoon of a grave that holds our bodies; from the darkness of loss and night, where “the Big Dipper is nothing but / the oldest spoon pointing us home”; to the darkness of lungs transformed into art. The poems cover a wide variety of topics—cultural, political, familial, and natural—and always, underlying these poems is the song of birds—with broken wings or clear voices, avian muses filling our forests now or long gone. There are nods to Basho and Thoreau, to Eliot and Frost, Dickinson and Milton, this last, a long poem that retells the story of Adam and Eve from the point of view of Mal, the apple. Likewise, The Intimacy of Spoons shares a variety of forms, from sonnet, sestina, and villanelle to syllabics, lyrics, and a ballad. At the center of the book is the long poem, “Elegy for My Body,” which uses wordplay and contrasting voices to explore mortality, because “You can't really do time; / it simply does us, / or undoes us, / us beings in the time being being beings / on Times Squared / waiting for the big ball to fall.” The poems of The Intimacy of Spoons return us to everyday stories and objects, common yet profound.

On December 19, 2022, the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the Food and Drug Administration, an independent 501(c)(3) organization created by Congress “to advance the mission of the FDA to modernize medical, veterinary, food, food ingredient, and cosmetic product development, accelerate innovation, and enhance product safety” released the second of two highly anticipated reports on its state of affairs. The first, released December 6, 2022, served as an operational evaluation of the FDA's Human Foods program, which had struggled significantly during the course of the supply chain issues brought on during the COVID pandemic. The second December 19th, 2022 report covered “certain components of FDA's Tobacco program,” evaluating operations there. Both were highly anticipated not just because of the serious and pertinent issues they addressed, but because questions circulated concerning how the Foundation is made up of many former FDA high officials, and how the report would rate the proceedings of the current FDA team.In this podcast Jeff Stier, a senior fellow at the Consumer Choice Center, senior fellow at the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, and a policy advisor to the Heartland Institute breaks down some of what the reports say, and what the next steps for both the FDA and Congress may be.Featuring: Jeff Stier, Senior Fellow, Consumer Choice CenterVisit our website – www.RegProject.org – to learn more, view all of our content, and connect with us on social media.*******As always, the Federalist Society takes no position on particular legal or public policy issues; all expressions of opinion are those of the speaker.

She wasn't happy.  She promised herself that the first chance she had to go on a rafting trip down the Grand Canyon she would go.  With over 30 Grand Canyon trips and numerous river trips throughout the West, Lee followed through on that promise to herself. Her love of nature, grand places and wild spaces are contagious.Enjoy Lee.Show Notes:Some of Lee's PaintingsMom's StuffTalking Fly Youtube Video of LeeSpring City, UtahBooks:1.  There's this River by Christa Sadler2.  Breaking into the Current: Boatwoman of the Grand Canyon by Louise Teal3.  Sunk Without a Sound by Brad Dimock4.  Canyon by Michael Ghiglieri5.  Grand Obsession: Harvey Butchard  and the Exploration of Grand Canyon by Elisa Butler Tom Myers6.  The Colorado River in the Grand Canyon: A Guide by Larry Stevens  7.  The Doing of the Thing: the Brief Brilliant Whitewater career of Buzz Holstrom by Vince Welch, Cort Conley & Brad DimockVisit my Instagram for photos:  Rivergirl Radiohttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/rivergirlradioSupport the showSupport the show

Dr. Waded Cruzado has served as the 12th president of Montana State University since 2010. She is well known for her understanding of the Morrill Act, which created the land-grant university system, and she is a passionate champion of the tripartite land-grant mission of education, research and public outreach. MSU has set new student enrollment records under Cruzado's leadership, becoming the fastest growing and largest university in the state, and students routinely win prestigious national awards, including Rhodes, Goldwater, Truman and Udall scholarships. Cruzado is also known for placing student success as the campus's top priority.  During Cruzado's tenure MSU's research enterprise has flourished; the university tallied an all-time high for research expenditures in 2019–2020, totaling $167 million, and MSU has competitively won more than $650 million for sponsored research projects. MSU is classified as R1 in the Carnegie Classification for "very high research activity," and is one of only two universities nationally with an R1 classification that is also classified as Very High Undergraduate enrollment. Under Cruzado's leadership the campus has seen numerous major construction and renovation projects. Current projects include the renovation and repurposing of Romney Hall and the construction of a new American Indian Hall. Completed projects include Norm Asbjornson Hall, Jabs Hall, Gaines Hall and the Animal Bioscience Building. Cruzado has also overseen significant improvements to student facilities, including new residence halls, recreation and dining facilities.  Philanthropic support has grown for MSU during her tenure. Among other efforts, MSU's comprehensive fundraising campaign raised more than $413 million, and construction is underway on MSU's donor-funded Bobcat Athletic Complex. Cruzado has provided new pathways to higher education with the establishment of Gallatin College MSU, and she obtained approval to designate the Honors Program as the Honors College. MSU also won a grant for the LaunchPad, a program that introduces entrepreneurship as a viable career option and provides university students and alumni with support for entrepreneurial ventures. MSU's national reputation is strong. Notable recognition includes winning the C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching awarded MSU its community engagement classification. Cruzado has also enhanced alumni and community relations. One visible community project is the CatWalk, an annual celebration of the relationship between MSU and the community. Cruzado chairs the board of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and is a commissioner of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. She has also served on numerous boards; current board memberships include the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, U.S. Bank and the Burton K. Wheeler Center.  Her awards include the “Hero” Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness – Montana Chapter; the Chief Executive HR Champion Award from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources; and the Michael P. Malone Educator of the Year from the Montana Ambassadors. She also was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International and was awarded the Seaman A. Knapp Memorial Lectureship. Cruzado previously served as executive vice president and provost at New Mexico State University. A native of Puerto Rico, she has a son and a daughter and two grandchildren.

What To Do With Sexual TraumaWhoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.~ Albert EinsteinUdall - "I recently completed a study utilizing a unique process for eliminating PTSD after sexual trauma. The sexual trauma study focused on workplace PTSD. The process is from work with My Envisioned Mind (MyE.M.) [developed by our delightful previous CBJ Guest, Beverley Searle http://corebrainjournal.com/157 (CBJ/157) & http://corebrainjournal.com/165 (CBJ/165)]. After experiencing the process, I decided to validate the process for two reasons: 1) I wanted more people to be helped through the EM process and 2) I wanted to possibly use the process as a part of my dissertation." Her PerspectiveFor over 27 years, Udall has operated as a facilitator of transformation by ensuring synthesis amongst individual, group and organization perspectives. She guides her clients in releasing their chains of slavery (anything that binds, holds, hinders, stops them) so they can take conscious and effective action in their professional and personal relationships. Udall is an Internationally accomplished Organization Development consultant with experience managing and implementing projects for both government (federal, state, local) and corporate organizations. Specialties include:executive coaching with C-level executives and managers, training design/development and facilitation in sexual harassment prevention, emotional competence (emotional intelligence), leadership and team development, diversity programs (implicit bias, inclusion, cultural competence), interviewing, performance management, communication, conflict management, customer service and change management.
