From Newcastle in New South Wales, to Wyomi on the Limestone Coast in South Australia, to Inverloch in Victoria - are all trying different ways to hold back the power of the ocean. So what can be done about it? And who is responsible for fixing a growing problem. And importantly who is responsible for footing the bill?

On this episode of the HappyCast, we go in-depth with local Houstonian Katy Barber who just tackled the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) FKT. Located in Texas, and definitely NOT Galveston, this is the 4th longest beach in the WORLD and one of the most isolated places in the country, all tucked away on the largest unprotected barrier island in the world. This is a 65+ mile FKT that traverses the entire length of the beach, and no woman has ever attempted this feat before, and only two men have completed it. We do a deep dive with Katy and her coach and fellow guest, Chad Lasater (who will one day have his own episode as he is a treasure trove of accomplishments). We talk about the logistics, the difficulty of running on a beach, and the dynamics with crewing and dealing with the remote nature of the race. Further yet, this was double the distance Katy has previously ran, so we talk about establishing distance PR's in the process. We also share a few crew stories, as both Chad and Andrew were present for the FKT. Vet Antivenom Saves Child After Hospital Stock Depleted; Venomous Sea Snake Causes Wildlife Sanctuary Evacuation Jeremy Zakis The segment covers two significant snake-related incidents. A venomous sea snake, rescued from the coastline by a Good Samaritan, was dropped off at the Coffs Wildlife Sanctuary. Because sea snakes panic and become aggressive and unpredictable on land, the sanctuary had to be evacuated for two hours while specialized snake catchers were called in. Separately, an 11-year-old girl bitten by a tiger snake in South Australia was rushed to Port Augusta Hospital, which had run out of antivenom. A quick-thinking doctor secured a vial of antivenom from a local veterinarian, confirming that the antivenom used for animals is effective for treating humans in emergencies, saving the girl's life.

The oceans are gobbling up Alaska's northern coastline in a hurry—a result of our planet's warming climate. That could force some towns to move farther inland, away from the hungry ocean. The Arctic is undergoing especially rapid change. Both air and ocean temperatures have increased three times faster than the global average. That's drastically reduced the amount of ice covering the Arctic Ocean during much of the year. With more open water, waves can grow bigger and stronger, so they hit land with greater force. At the same time, the warmer conditions are thawing more of the frozen land, making it easier for waves to eat away all the shoreline. In some parts of Alaska, the land has been retreating by more than 60 feet per year. A recent study looked at the region around Point Hope, a small village on the northwestern coast. Part of it had to relocate in the 1970s as the shoreline was eaten away. Today, it's threatened again. The airport runway is sometimes under water, and several cultural sites are endangered. Researchers used computer models to look at what might happen over the next 50 years. They simulated changing ocean, air, and land temperatures, as well as changes in the amount of sea ice and other factors. They found that the coastline could retreat by about 150 to 300 feet by 2075. The loss could be more intense if more of the tundra thaws out—making it easier for the ocean to gobble up the Alaskan coastline. Clare's Minister of State is expressing confidence that offshore wind development can take place off the county's coast without impacting on its natural beauty. A Government proposal outlining the future of offshore renewable energy in Ireland has been launched at an event in West Clare today.

Clare's Minister of State is expressing confidence that offshore wind development can take place off the county's coast without impacting on its natural beauty. A Government proposal outlining the future of offshore renewable energy in Ireland has been launched at an event in West Clare today. The Armada Hotel in Spanish Point has been chosen as the location for the launch of the National Designated Maritime Area Plan for Offshore Renewable Energy Proposal. The document, along with its accompanying Public Participation Statement, contains a roadmap for the progression of Ireland's offshore wind sector over the coming years. Building on the South Coast DMAP for Offshore Renewable Energy approved by the Oireachtas in 2024, the National DMAP will designate sites around Ireland's coast suited to offshore wind. According to the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, the proposal launched today provides a “sustainable framework for developing offshore renewable energy, balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and community engagement to support Ireland's transition to a low-carbon future”. Tulla Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State at the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, Timmy Dooley, believes sites can be chosen for development along Clare's coastline in a way that doesn't damage its iconic appeal. The proposal includes a timeline for public participation which states that consultation will take place in the pre-draft stage with maritime stakeholders, authorities and the public within the first three months of 2026. In early 2027, the draft National DMAP is to be published, and this will be followed by formal public consultation ahead of the finalisation of the DMAP at the year's end. Chair of the Shannon Estuary Economic Taskforce Barry O'Sullivan insists the focus must now be on delivery. CEO of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group Dr Simon Berrow has expressed support for the development of a National DMAP from the perspective of decarbonisation. He says it's vital however that extensive knowledge of species and habitats in the ocean is acquired as part of the process.
