On this week's episode, I am talking to Dr. Cindy Hovington, founder of The Curious Neuron and the Reflective Parenting podcast. Dr. Hovington is a mom of three and has a doctorate in neuroscience. Her goal is to break down science-backed research on child development and parenting and turn it into applicable advice for parents. She is very passionate about parental well-being as she knows we have to take care of ourselves in order to be able to take care of our children. We discuss tantrums, setting boundaries, and strategies to keep yourself calm while meeting your child's needs. This is the episode for you if you experience these challenges and want to understand more about the science of parenting. Here's what we talk about with Dr. Hovington: How The Reflective Parenting Club was created to help parents find best practices while effectively managing emotions and stress.Acknowledging when we as parents are not sitting in the most calm emotional space and being able to pause and communicate these feelings to others.Parenting and changing behaviors takes time and does not change overnight.Using boundaries and discipline as a way to teach our kids what to do or not to do in order to set them up for success.Creating awareness around your own physical state can help calm stressful situations. How emotional states and stress can affect the overall state of your home and the way your child reacts in certain situations.Resetting challenging moments throughout your day to create moments of joy.Sharing your emotions with your kids can help create connection and evolve trust.Resources: The Curious Neuron website: https://curiousneuron.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/curious_neuronFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/curiousneuronThe Reflective Parent Club: https://curiousneuron.com/reflective-parent-club/Reflective Parenting Podcast: https://curiousneuron.com/podcasts/ For more insight into parenting in today's world, be sure to subscribe to my Substack: https://www.albiona.substack.comAnd be sure to follow me on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentingreframe and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/theparentingreframe for more parenting tips and advice.
Send us a textWhat can the dying teach us about living? In this transformative conversation, Dr. Kathy Zhang, a palliative care physician, shares profound insights from her work with patients at the end of life that can revolutionize our approach to parenting and emotional wellbeing.Dr. Zhang reveals how witnessing death daily has paradoxically enhanced her appreciation for life's simple joys. Rather than creating fear, regular exposure to mortality has normalized it, allowing her to find deep gratitude in mundane moments like "just waking up." This perspective shift offers parents a powerful lens through which to view their daily interactions with their children. The conversation takes an unexpected turn as Dr. Zhang introduces her "bathtub metaphor" to explain the crucial difference between rest and restoration. Many parents mistakenly believe that "doing nothing" on weekends will recharge them, then wonder why they feel just as depleted on Monday. She explains that rest merely "plugs the drain" to prevent further energy loss, while true restoration actively "adds water to the bathtub" through meaningful connection with yourself or others.About Dr. Zhang:Dr. Luyi Kathy Zhang is a hospice & palliative care physician, TEDx speaker & hypnotist. She has comforted thousands of dying patients and held space for their deepest secrets, biggest regrets and final wishes. She's made it her mission to share these life-changing insights so people can benefit from deathbed wisdom while they're still young and healthy. Send us a textHave you ever felt crushed by the pressure to follow a specific parenting style perfectly? The weight of trying to fit into boxes labeled "positive parenting" or "conscious parenting" leaves many of us feeling inadequate and constantly seeking more information. What if there's a more sustainable approach? The newly renamed Reflective Parenting Podcast launches with a powerful message: building emotional intelligence skills matters more than following perfect parenting scripts. After speaking with hundreds of parents, I've discovered a common pattern – parents frantically searching for specific advice for each developmental stage, yet never feeling competent or confident in their abilities.Research shows that parents who struggle with emotional regulation tend to default to authoritarian parenting styles, creating chronically stressed homes and eventually teens who can't regulate their own emotions. This cycle continues unless we intentionally develop four critical domains of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, emotion regulation, parental awareness, and healthy relationship skills. The reflective parenting approach isn't about memorizing what to say during tantrums or following rigid schedules. It's about developing your ability to pause, notice your emotional patterns, understand your child's unique needs, and respond from a place of genuine presence rather than reactivity. When we build these foundational skills, we gain the confidence to parent our specific children, not generic ones from parenting books.Ready to break free from parenting labels and build genuine confidence? Join our Reflective Parent Club, where we focus on developing these essential skills together. Visit the link in the show notes to start with a 7-day free trial, or schedule a conversation about your specific parenting challenges. Send us a textIn this episode of the Curious Neuron podcast, I chat with therapist Travis Goodman about the rising concerns around addiction. We explore the importance of compassionate curiosity when approaching conversations about addiction, the role of the nervous system in addiction, and the necessity of managing personal emotions when dealing with loved ones struggling with addiction. The conversation emphasizes the need for connection and vulnerability as antidotes to shame and isolation often associated with addiction. In this conversation, Travis Goodman, LMFT, discusses the critical role of connection in healing from addiction, particularly for men. He emphasizes the importance of building support systems, whether through therapy or community, and the need for safe spaces where men can express vulnerability and accountability. The discussion also covers navigating denial in loved ones struggling with addiction, setting boundaries, and the significance of changing the narrative around addiction to foster understanding and empathy.Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/FDUyGUYBH5QResources:Follow Travis on Instagram @integratedmanprojectJoin the next cohort of the Men's Collective with Travis herePrivate coaching or counselling with Travis hereIn the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction hereEditorial: Human Connection as a Treatment for Addiction hereInterested in our 3 month program called The Reflective Parent Club? Send us a textIn this special 200th episode of the Curious Neuron podcast, we chat with renowned professor from the University of Calgary Dr. Nicole Letourneau. Her research focuses on enhancing parental reflective functioning (RF), the ability to understand and interpret one's own and a child's mental and emotional states. Through the development of the ATTACH™ program, a 10-week intervention, she has demonstrated that improving RF leads to stronger parent-child interactions, secure attachment, and better child outcomes, including enhanced social-emotional skills, fewer behavioral issues, and improved cognitive abilities. Her work highlights the role of RF in fostering healthy relationships, reducing child anxiety and aggression, and promoting emotional and psychological well-being. Parents can apply these insights by engaging in reflective practices and interventions like ATTACH™ to deepen their connection with their children and support their development. You DON'T want to miss this episode! Send us a Text Message.Have you ever wondered why children's natural curiosity seems to fade as they grow older? This episode takes you on a reflective journey from the inception of Curious Neuron, inspired by a transformative comment from a Harvard professor. I share the pivotal moments from my academic path, including my PhD in neuroscience and postdoctoral studies, that led to the creation of Curious Neuron. From the spark of an idea to a full-fledged business, I recount the challenges and triumphs of starting Curious Neuron. Listen as I navigate the hurdles of balancing work with motherhood, making the emotional decision to leave my postdoctoral journey, and forgoing a position at Harvard to be with my terminally ill grandfather. These experiences shaped the direction of Curious Neuron, focusing solely on supporting parents and children through innovative educational strategies.Balancing work, homeschooling, and household responsibilities has been a constant struggle, particularly during the pandemic. I open up about the emotional toll of early parenthood and the importance of self-compassion. Through the Reflective Parent Club, we aim to provide a supportive space for parents to nurture their own well-being. As we gear up for season seven, I'm excited to share conversations with inspiring guests like Stephanie Harrison, founder of The New Happy, offering insights into personal growth and effective parenting. As moms, we feel immense pressure to stay calm and peaceful even in the toughest, most triggering moments. And when we fall short, we often beat ourselves up and feel ashamed. But if we want to break this cycle, we need to move away from shame and find a way to offer ourselves the same compassion and understanding that we have for our children. Today I'm joined by Dr. Cindy Hovington, founder of Curious Neuron, to discuss what responsive parenting really looks like and how we can move away from the cycle of unrealistic pressure and shame. Have you ever found yourself scrubbing baseboards and questioned why you place so much pressure on yourself? As I prepare for my trip to California at the end of the month, that exact introspection led to a profound realization about the 'shoulds' in my life, a topic I eagerly explore with Erica Djossa, therapist and author of "Releasing the Motherload," on our latest Curious Neuron podcast episode. Together, we scrutinize the mental load that mothers bear, addressing the invisible tasks and the ever-elusive balance between self-care and parenting. We offer you strategies for dealing with the intense emotional landscape that comes with parenting, ensuring that you feel seen, understood, and empowered to align your actions with your personal values. Wrapping up our conversation, we touch upon the cultural myth of the perfect mother, the critical importance of articulating boundaries, and how to advocate for yourself in an often overwhelming parenting journey. It's an episode for mothers and parents at any stage, tune in for a guiding light through the complexities of maternal mental health and well-being.Buy Erica's new book:Amazon in CanadaAmazon in the USVisit her websites:https://www.ericadjossa.com/https://www.momwell.com/Follow her on IG:https://www.instagram.com/momwell/Come to my talk in Palo Alto California on April 25th!Please leave a rating for our podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! As a mom of three with a neuroscience background, I've come to understand that the emotional health of fathers is a critical but often overlooked topic. That's why I invited Dr. Matt Englar-Carlson, an expert in counseling and male psychology, onto the podcast. Our conversation offers an essential guide for anyone invested in the development of healthy boyhood and supportive environments for men as they embrace parenting, with insights into breaking cycles of anger and fostering emotional regulation. In our final thoughts, Dr. Englar-Carlson and I reflect on the significance of building healthy relationships for life success. We explore how being a positive force in the lives of children, partners, and friends can be the cornerstone of well-being. For fathers and all listeners seeking to enhance their mental health and emotional expression, this episode is an invitation to explore new pathways and embrace the journey toward more fulfilling personal connections.MENTAL App:https://www.getmental.com/Sources:Accentuating positive masculinity: A new foundation for the psychology of boys, men, and masculinity. The American psychological Association's practice guidelines for men and boys: Are they hurting rather than helping male mental wellness?Rate AND review the Curious Neuron podcast and send me a screenshot to get my Reflective Parent Workbook for FREE (offer valid until Sunday, March 11th, 2024)Please leave a rating for our podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! From my personal encounters with teaching empathy to my six and eight-year-old to sparking young minds' curiosity for neuroscience, this episode has a lot to offer. I'll share how a Nintendo dispute became a perfect opportunity to teach my kids the power of perspective taking in arguments and the crucial role of empathy in conflict resolution. It's a lesson that goes beyond parenthood – it's fundamentally about understanding and communicating with each other. The importance of parental mental health is often underappreciated, and that's what we'll be delving into in the later half of our episode. As a community, we ought to acknowledge the emotional and mental toll parenting can take and work together to provide the support needed. I encourage you to help us understand better what parents need to maintain their mental and emotional wellbeing by providing your input. Let's wrap up the week with a meaningful discussion about empathy, perspective, and mental health. Here's to a positive end to the week and a wonderful week ahead! Please take 3-5 min to fill in this form on parental well-being. As parents, we don't always get it right. But having the tools and skills to process our own big feelings and navigate emotion regulation in ourselves can have a big impact on how we support our children. Joining me to talk about ways we can establish a healthy relationship to our emotions and teach our children to do the same is the founder of Curious Neuron, Dr. Cindy Hovington. This episode will help you learn the benefit of slowing down, how to cut yourself some slack, and why the best way of teaching is through modeling. You'll hear a psychologist and neuroscientist with 5 kids between them share their own relatable experiences with parenthood and offer strategies for using language, physiology, and brain science to create a honest and balanced approach to emotion regulation. Dr. Hovington has a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical exercise Physiology and a Master's in Rehabilitation Science from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. She completed a Post- Doctoral Fellow at McGill in Education . She received her PHD in Neuroscience also from McGill University. Dr. Hovington is the recipient of six awards and is the author of eight journal articles. After becoming a mom for the first time in 2015, I learned that there were very few evidence-based resources available to support parents. I left academia to stay home with my 3 children and decided that I needed to create a reliable and science-backed resource that ALL parents can access. This is how Curious Neuron was born and has grown into a community of over 50,000 international parents. By making science accessible to parents, we make informed decisions about our children and develop tools and skills that help us and our children thrive. Dr. Hovington has published her work in psychological and educational journals including Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, BMC Psychiatry, Schizophrenia and Science and Children. She is a parenting contributor for CJAD800 and has appeared on Global News Montreal. She has given webinars for Learn Quebec, The Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists, The Society for functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy 2021 conference and more. Curious Neuron and Dr. Hovington's work has been highlighted in Canadian, US and UK magazines. Click here to learn more about her media appearances. In today's episode, we are joined by Dr. Simón Guendelman. We discuss what emotional regulation actually is, how self compassion can change your brain and parenting, and how scientists are studying this. This episode is a bit research heavy - so take out your Curious Neuron notebooks! Tune in to get a research back definition and playbook of how to integrate self-compassion into your daily life.
