In episode 81 of the We Hack Purple Podcast host Tanya Janca spoke to Diana Kelley, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Protect AI. Diana and Tanya worked together at Microsoft, and to say that Diana is a pillar of the information security industry is somewhat of an understatement. Together they discussed problems with Large Language Models (LLMs) ingesting crappy code, and bad licenses, the OSSF (and it's goodness), and that sometimes people don't even realize they are breaking software licences when they use what an LLM has produced. We discussed the fact that if a CVE comes out for a library an LLM gave you, but it didn't identify it with the correct name of the library, you wouldn't receive notifications about it. She clarified how ML pipelines are set up, how data scientists work, with insecure juniper laptops all over the place (perhaps a generalization on my part). We discussed how data science seems to be a topic a lot of CISOs are pretending aren't in their domain to protect, but both of us agreed that is not so. They have some of the most valuable data your organization can possess. We also covered best practices for securing MLSec, the OWASP Top Ten for LLMs, and the new free community her company has started MLSECOPS. A woman's innate traits and abilities, such as multitasking, problem-solving, organizational skills, curiosity, and the zeal to go above and beyond, will serve her very well as a cybersecurity professional. Here are links to some useful cybersecurity training and awareness resources:https://www.girlsecurity.orghttps://www.sans.orgwww.CybHER.orgWww.WiCyS.orghttps://www.isc2.orgTime Stamps00:02 -- Introduction03:33 -- Ashley Podhradsky's professional highlights04:59 -- Kriti Arora's professional highlights08:22 -- Dakota State University's cybersecurity initiatives11:30 -- Kriti Arora's exposure to cybersecurity education and her reflections on the learning experience14:17 -- Holistic approach and human element in cybersecurity17:21 -- Core cybersecurity offerings at educational institutions19:23 -- Cybersecurity awareness and training throughout the organization21:43 -- Gender discrimination in cybersecurity25:23 -- Cybersecurity stereotypes30:05 -- Cybersecurity skillsets33:19 -- Why women are likely to be very successful in cybersecurity37:38 -- Industry-academic partnership42:55 -- How would you promote cybersecurity to your female friends?45:08 -- Resources for cybersecurity education and training53:22 -- Final thoughtsMemorable Ashley Podhradsky Quotes/Statements"When I was in school, I was usually the only woman and I wanted to do what I could to help bring more women into this field. Welcome back to the Tech Policy Grind! In this episode, we hit the road once again for our North American tour of some major tech policy conferences. This time, we head to the ICANN76 Community Forum in Cancún, Mexico, the Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) 2023 Conference in Denver, Colorado, and the IAPP Global Privacy Summit in Washington DC. The ICANN76 Community Forum is the 76th ICANN Meeting since ICANN's inception in 1998. Reema chats with Cindyneia Cantanhêde, a Brazilian data privacy attorney based in Sao Paulo, who was at the conference as an ICANN Fellow (along with Reema). The WiCyS Conference brings together women in cybersecurity to dig into substantive, technical conversations on what's going on in the field. But it also is a space for women (who only represent 25% of the cybersecurity industry) and allies to connect and get inspired about retention and advancement in the field. Reema chats with Lynn Dohm, Executive Director of WiCyS about the conference's history and goals. Then, she talks to Anna Lainfiesta, Security Team Lead at Zendesk about her experience as a WiCyS conference first-timer. Anna is also the Secretary of the WiCyS Privacy, Law and Policy Affiliate. Finally, Reema and Lama head to the Global Privacy Summit, where they led a session (along with Foundry Fellow Meri Baghdasaryan). Lama catches up with Leona Lewis, Senior Counsel, Privacy, Ethics and Compliance at Thrasio; Saleela Khanum Salahuddin, Attorney Advisor at Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB); and former Foundry Fellow Jacqueline Ahn, Senior Attorney of Data Privacy at IBM. Check out the Foundry on Instagram, Twitter, or LinkedIn and subscribe to our newsletter! Philanthropy, Cybersecurity, and Bringing the Energy. In this episode of The Outspoken Podcast, host Shana Cosgrove talks to Tasha Cornish, Executive Director at Cybersecurity Association of Maryland, Inc. (CAMI). Tasha discusses how her work has helped improve the nation, from running a human services nonprofit during COVID to defending the country from cyber attacks during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She also explains why cybersecurity is important for every business and why information truly is power within the IT sector. Tasha gives advice to those entering the world of cybersecurity and reveals what advice she's seeking out for where she's at in her own career. Lastly, Tasha tells us about her adventure journey from snowboarding, scuba diving, running marathons, and possibly even CISSP. QUOTES “There's a very interesting debate when it comes to the human factor of cybersecurity. It's a combination of training your staff but also making sure that your networks are not over privileging your staff, that they have access to all these systems they don't need to access. [...] Which gets a lot of pushback of course from people who are trying to work hard and be productive, but it does help protect our systems” - Tasha Cornish [29:13] “Like anything else, if you don't have the people and processes in place to use these [cybersecurity] products, they're kind of useless.” - Tasha Cornish [30:20] “[Local governments] are a huge target [...] It's a lot, for schools and hospitals really, so we are out here trying to be a good source of information. Diana Kelley recently joined Cyber Future Foundation as an Advisor. Highlights: 0:00 - Introductions and Backgrounds On how she does it all… “It takes a village – everything I do is in partnership with others” “I'm super hyper organized and that helps a lot – once I showed somebody my pantry and everything is labeled” Loves being back on the advisory side; has been at big companies for 8+ years – gives her balance working with smaller companies 6:09 - “When you get to the really big companies, as things get scaled the complications grow exponentially – have legal requirements, regulatory needs based on the geo – people can get really siloed in their focus. CISO has to have some kind of a view…” 8:44 – Diana's Perspective on Leadership. Leadership – she's been called “pushy,” but some people want to go in and get organized and bring people together. In college (she went to Boston College) and loved the radio station. They needed a general manager, and it was a student selected role; in her second year she decided to run for GM and she was the first woman! Years later when she was working in Cambridge and building out a team, she thought to herself “I could be a Vice President someday – she had been building towards this… Advice: think about what is natural for you and embrace the opportunity. Leaders don't necessarily have to be managers 21:09 - The Button Learning - @whataboutbunny on Instagram 41:04 - What Gets You Excited and Which Role in Cybersecurity? There are CISOs presenting to boards – what is that you want to do in cyber? Look at people who are in those roles and reach out and talk to them – ask them what their job is like “I've learned so much by just asking people. For a while I was really curious – what's a distinguished engineer…” Ask people what it's like to be in their job and how did they get there Engage with Diana Kelley: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dianakelleysecuritycurve/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dianakelleysecuritycurve/) Twitter: https://twitter.com/dianakelley14 (https://twitter.com/dianakelley14) The (Security) Balancing Act: https://www.brighttalk.com/channel/17830/ (https://www.brighttalk.com/channel/17830/)

With us today are Lynn Dohm, Executive Director of Women in Cybersecurty (WiCyS) and Martha Laughman, Veterans Iniative Lead at WiCyS and Director of Workforce Development at Smoothstack. Lynn and Martha are here to talk about the amazing programs for women and women veterans at WiCyS. WiCyS is so much more than a conference for women in cybersecurity. Its presence spans the globe and its programs are myriad. Mentorship, student scholarships, training, special interest groups, job boards, veterans' assistance, and apprenticeships are all available. Smoothstack is a partner of WiCyS, and has created a program for women veteran apprenticeships designed to benefit all parties involved. The program is based on attitude, aptitude and intitial assessments, but requires no cybersecurity knowledge at the start. Apprentices are paid, trained, and qualified when they come out, working for employers on a two-year contract at a minimum. The program addresses employers' fears over being the first ones to hire and train new talent only to lose them. WiCyS is a phenomenal organization, and there are ample opporutnities for allies - not just women - to join.
