A great insightful conversation with Dr. Dicken Bettinger. Dicken became licensed as a clinical psychologist in 1983 and retired from his psychotherapy practice after working as a psychologist for 31 years. Thirty-three years ago, he met Sydney Banks who had an enlightenment experience where he realized the Three Principles that underlie all human experience. Dicken had finally found universal principles that he could teach anyone. He was grateful to find something that was simple in nature yet had the profound effect of raising the quality of a person's life. He feels fortunate that for 23 years he was able to learn directly from Sydney Banks. In 2008 Dicken received a Certificate of Competency from Mr. Banks authorizing him to teach the Three Principles. Dicken co-founded and was the director of a center in Vermont that was the first center in the Northeast to teach the Three Principles. He served as one of the original nationwide Core Faculty and is currently a faculty member for the Three Principles Global Community. In 1996 Dicken joined Pransky and Associates, a Three Principle-based institute in La Conner, Washington. Dicken was instrumental in developing and teaching leadership and staff development programs for universities, hospitals, publishing companies, defense contractors, health departments, banks, and non-profit organizations. He taught company employees what it takes to be resilient and agile in the face of today's business challenges and rapidly changing environments. He mentored CEOs and their leadership teams in raising the bar on their productivity, teamwork, and business success. He now specializes in developing 3 Principles practitioners, as well as leading group seminars on the Principles and their relationship to spiritual/psychological well-being. In January 2012 Dicken founded Three Principles Mentoring to deepen peoples' understanding of the 3 principles, develop 3P practitioners globally, and offer seminars in countries throughout the world. Dicken also deeply values his work as a director on the board of the Three Principles Global Community. This organization was formed to spread the teachings of Sydney Banks around the world. Dicken has been married for 52 years and loves teaching 3P Practitioners and running seminars worldwide on spiritual/psychological well-being. He has two adult children, Nina and Ben, and adores spending time with his four grandchildren. When our level of well-being rises, we experience less anxiety, less time feeling down, less stress, more enjoyment, a greater sense of aliveness, a light-heartedness, more confidence in our decisions, and a greater ease in all of our relationships. The Calmcast - Antidote to Self Development

I used to meditate every single day. In fact, I didn't miss a day for about 4 years. I did it when I was on holiday, when I was busy and even when I wasn't feeling very well. You see, I was on a mission to make myself feel a certain way. I wanted to feel calmer, more motivated and better about myself. But it became an addiction because I reached the point where I didn't think I could be okay if I didn't meditate. Over the last couple of years, I have considered what meditation actually is especially after I attended a lovely event run by Michael Neill and Dicken Bettinger called 'Living in a State of Meditation.' You see, I now see meditation as a state of mind which available to all of us when we are not so caught up in our personal thinking. I love that Jeff Foster says about it, "What is meditation? Pure fascination with this moment, exactly as it is." As I have explored the truth about how human experience is created deeper and deeper, I find myself naturally spending more time in the present moment. So instead of meditating every day, I now live in a state of meditation much more of the time. What I would love you to see is that you are not broken, you don't need fixing and that everything you are looking for through tools and techniques like mediation is available to you always; it's what you are made of. Imagine not just getting through each day but getting into it like you would a mediation; noticing every moment in all it's glory. You don't have to be a guru to experience this.

QUOTE of the Day: When you are fully present, kindness arises. – Dicken Bettinger -- In this episode of “My Love of Life Energy,” I am speaking with Dicken Bettinger. It is a conversation that is beyond inspiring. We discuss our essential nature—which is kindness. Dicken points out how thoughts cloud our capacity and potential toward kindness and wellness.  When people are fully present they are naturally warmer and kinder. Dicken Bettinger, Ed.D., received his undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence University and began his career teaching high school students. Many students came to Dicken with problems that they were experiencing. This began his search for something to teach people that would increase their well-being. He received his Master's degree from Pennsylvania State University and his Doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Boston University. He became licensed as a clinical psychologist in 1983 and retired his psychotherapy practice after working as a psychologist for 31 years. Twenty-eight years ago he met Sydney Banks who had an enlightenment experience where he realized the Three Principles that underlie all human experience. In this weeks' episode, they reflect on their time teaching  SPARK's Insight to Well-Being Program with this group and how the space created allowed the women to teach themselves and SPARK their own insights.  Brooke and Ashley also share a few letters the women wrote. Listen as the participants, themselves, explain why understanding their mind and their emotions helped them to see others in a deeper way and created unexpected connections that led to the whole group coming together despite all their differences. *There were two quotes shared on this podcast that were in letters the ladies in jail wrote out. We wanted to give credit to the two authors who wrote these quotes. The first quote is from Nicola Bird's A Little Peace of Mind book. “When we look back there were always little signs that we were heading off course, but we were so caught up in our self-conscious worried thinking about ourselves that we either didn't hear them or completely ignored them, but life happens in service of us and it keeps attempting to wake us up until we have no choice but to listen.” The second quote shared was from the same book and was a quote by Dr. Dicken Bettinger. “Your psychological suffering is simply a function of mistaking your own thought content for truth.”

We can't help but relax when we speak with Dicken Bettinger. His way of being is so calming and the way he points to our innate health and wisdom is so clear and grounded.  Dicken learned about the understanding we work from directly from Sydney Banks. His life was transformed both personally and professionally after listening to Syd just one time, and he was able to enjoy many more opportunities to be mentored by Syd.  Prior to meeting Sydney Banks, Dicken was heavily involved in self-development.  After meeting him, Dicken pivoted and dropped self-help and shifted his approach to counseling. He no longer saw mental illness only wellbeing. He now viewed his clients (and his family) as having perfect mental health, but for being caught up in their thinking. He helps his clients to see their innate resilience and capacity to wake up from conditioned thinking.Dicken reminds us that we are built for shifts -- we're designed to have insights. And the best way to be impacted by an insight is to open to the feeling of it, rather than trying to understand it intellectually. This episode explores:How anxiety is created by our thinking not circumstanceThe power of insight and how staying with the feeling is what mattersThe original teachings of Sydney Banks and how they shaped the rest of Dicken's life and careerDestination as an illusion, there is only the presentBeing in a relationship helps wake us up to who we are and reveals our blind spotsDicken Bettinger, Ed.D., received his doctorate in counseling psychology and practiced as a licensed clinical psychologist for years. "Did you know that there are simple, yet profound, Principles that reveal the connection between the spiritual and the psychological nature of all human beings? As you realize these Principles for yourself you can truly begin to experience a sense of sacredness in the ordinary moments of your life. You will learn that these Principles are the sole source of all of your feelings and experiences and that understanding these simple principles is the key to raising your overall level of well-being. When your level of well-being rises, you experience less anxiety, less time feeling down, less stress, more enjoyment, a greater sense of aliveness, a light-heartedness, more confidence in your decisions, and greater ease in all of your relationships. When I learned this I not only gained the benefits mentioned above, but I also gained a greater spiritual sense of life—more awe and wonder, a greater sense of the sacred nature of life, a deeper trust in my capacity to access a wisdom that transcends the intellect, and a growing ability to experience the unconditional love that lies at the root of our being. Matt’s one of the coaches taking part in the Clarity Advanced Coach & Facilitator Programme, and he and I met just over a year ago when he joined the Thriving Coaches Blueprint. And one of the things he developed while he was on that programme was his podcast, “The Heart of Dad”. Matt’s a father himself, and he’s passionate about supporting dads to really be there in their children’s lives. In fact, many of his coaching clients are entrepreneurs who are also dads and want to experience more clarity and heart in their work and in their lives as a whole. So about a month ago, Matt mentioned that he was planning to do the ‘Heart of Dad’ summit, an event where he was going to interview coaches and teachers who have had an impact in Matt’s life, and who are also fathers. Dicken Bettinger is a rare person. Whenever I hear him speak I experience a wonderful sense of ease and inner stillness. I often joke that Dicken could read the phone directory and people would listen to him and get something from just being in his presence. So when I got to speak to him on the podcast about the power of listening I jumped at the chance. He was as every bit as gracious, gentle and humble as I had imagined. I could have talked to him all day. Like me, he is passionate about listening and the power of listening as a catalyst to touch the deeper intelligence both within ourselves as the listener but also by enabling the other person to experience innate wisdom. Listening is such a beautiful thing. On the face of it listening appears to be something we need to 'do'. However, when you start to realise that listening is actually our natural state - then it takes the exploration around listening to a different level. In this podcast we explore how: -Listening is not about 'doing' - listening is a state of being -Dropping out of our head and into our heart is a beautiful gateway to connection -Wisdom is waiting to break through the noise of thinking You can find out more about Dickens's work on Youtube.

In today's episode we're joined by Woody; and boy! was this an enlightening conversation! It stretched our minds and made us question everything including our own thinking. If you're interested to hear about someone who totally transformed their life, this episode is for you. From addict to guru, he talks to us about his years of addiction to drink and drugs, his time in rehab and his subsequent, awakening and sobriety. Woody worked in Private Equity, driven by money, success and a rock n roll lifestyle, before radically changing his life. He now coaches high performing individuals and lives in an (almost) constant state of peace... yes, you heard that right. Woody teaches us so much in this episode: We have inherent resilience. Our external experiences do not create our internal experience. (It's a mind bending concept in a lot of ways - but stick with it!) The power of thought - 'I don't have to feel what I'm thinking'. Pause a minute and take that in... you are not your thoughts Enthusiasm for life is within. We often don't realise it's us. We assume it's the external circumstances. Life is not an outside-in experience. Towards the end of the episode, we also discuss how Woody's enlightened state of mind can marry up with the anger and outrage over such potent issues like Black Lives Matter: He notes - we don't make good decisions when we're mad, sad or worried. People mistake peace for inaction. Actually peace is inspired action. We have two states - stuck ‘in your thinking' or ‘in life'. What we THINK is up for grabs. In short, our default is we feel what we think; but we are at choice to tell ourselves otherwise. Resources (from Woody himself!): - Syd Banks has lots of videos (I think 3 video series and many other individual ones) on YouTube and on www.sydbanks.com - If you want to get a feel for what the 3 Principles then the best thing to do is listen to Syd - just don't try to understand it intellectually. Look beyond the words to the Truth of it, we have to look within to understand it - 'Within' or 'inside' is a metaphor for beyond the physical world, beyond what any of us can conceive - Syd also wrote 6 books about this understanding Other amazing coaches / teachers mentioned: - Micahel Neill, Dr George Pransky (Michael's mentor), Dr Joe Bailey, Dr Bill Pettit I also love Dr Dicken Bettinger, Cathy Casey, Judy Sedgman, Elsie Spittle. My mom is back! She was here to talk about 'grace and ease with pain and disease' in episode 126 and we take the conversation deeper in this episode as she shares her intimate experience with 'the virus.' Upon emerging on the other side of her experience with the viral infection, Ellen wrote a letter to The Virus.   Dear Virus, I was wondering if you were coming for a visit. Thanks for the advance warning. I'm appreciative of all the information I received of your upcoming arrival. I’m grateful for the wisdom that guided me during your visit. And, I’m more grateful for the mild symptoms and the gentle whispers for deeper self care. As my mentor, Dr. Bill Pettit says, I received your symptoms as love letters from my body. I want people to know that your visit can be gentle. I want people to know that your visit can be temporary, just like everything else that passes through us. Just like all of our thoughts. Just like all of our experiences. I was worried that if I told people that I was experiencing your variety of symptoms, that I could be adding more worry to the world. I've read and heard the fearful and worried responses of others sharing their journeys. I was resistant to the possibility of hearing worry from friends and family. You were the catalyst for some meaningful insights. I realized that I was concerned about my own worried thoughts. Then, a beautiful glimmer of light came through the cracks of my thinking. I can have worried thoughts and not always have to have the worried feelings that typically accompany the thoughts. I became aware of the thoughts as separate from myself. Thoughts are there and I’m here. It is really possible to have worried thoughts and not have the experience of worry. How powerful! Then, I had another insight. Who am I to think that I am responsible for the worry of others? The thinking, feeling and experience of others is not up to me. Let’s take some time to talk about peace. Where to find that nice feeling and how to live from that centered place. In this episode we reflect on what's going on and how we have been responding to the current coronavirus pandemic situation that has swept the whole wide world. Some important takeaways include... Cluttered thinking vs a clear state of mind Where fear actually comes from (hint: not the virus, and not the news) Worrying vs trusting, and how to trust more Why 'trying' to be more peaceful is most often counterproductive The benefit of changing the channel, on your screen, and in your consciousness Join the conversation and tune in LIVE on Thursdays at 12PM pst on FACEBOOK or INSTAGRAM!   You may also be interested in these episodes... In this conversation we discuss her past traumatic experiences and how she has largely transcended the debilitating physical pain that she felt for years as a consequence. Chana’s current work is influenced by Dr. Sarno’s work with TMS (tension myositis syndrome) and the teachings of Sydney Banks and the 3 principles. Some important takeaways include... In this episode we talk about triggers and do they really exist. We talked about the insecurity of believing that anything outside of us can cause us to feel a particular way. No doubt, life happens and we are conditioned by what we choose to learn from our experiences. However, we are more than the sum of our experiences. We have a resilience within us that we can count that can get us through any circumstance. When we know that resilience is who we are then we are less likely to believe that we can be ‘triggered’. We talk about the dangers of insisting on a trigger free environment and the dependency on safe space in order to thrive. This is the opposite of victimhood, or living a disempowered life where your physical or emotional experience is subject to events or circumstances outside of yourself. We can't control anything when it comes to the circumstances in our life, despite how hard we try! And contrary to popular belief, we can't even control our THOUGHTS about what happens in our life. What happens to athletes and coaches, when they let go of the contents of their conditioning and fall into the Grace of pure Being? Beyond the linear perspective of living life, the chronological of time, and the continuum of memory and projection, there is a stillness, a Divine Universal Intelligence, a supreme creative presence. When human beings are aligned with this essence, they re-connect with their true Self, rather than live from the conditioned self; concepts, judgments and assumptions. Performing from this space of peace and pure joy is the ultimate leveraging point for sportspeople.  Andy Winter has been an Educator, Administrator, and Coach for over thirty years. What is anxiety? Show notes: I'm thrilled to be talking to Dicken Bettinger about: What is anxiety and is it possible to be freed from it? Dicken is one of the few people who was taught directly by Sydney Banks, the man who discovered the principles. Dicken trained as a Pyschologist and for the almost 30 years, he has taught the three principles. He has helped many people to free themselves from anxiety and return to happiness. Before understanding the principles, Dicken himself used to suffer from extreme anxiety and used to have a zillion techniques and meditated for hours a day to attempt to alleviate it. All in all, there really isn't anyone on the planet that I can think of who is better placed to speak to about anxiety! So... what is anxiety? The dictionary definition of anxiety is: "A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome" Dicken explained that almost every one of us experiences moments of anxiety - that's not a problem in itself, it's just being human and is a function of how our thoughts create our feelings of anxiety. Dicken's answer to 'What is anxiety', in terms of anxiety being a problem in someone's life, is that it's when we misunderstand where our anxiety comes from - when we believe that our anxiety comes from outside events such as: The situation we're in Our problems The people we're with And then become anxious about the fact that at any moment something can happen to trigger the anxiety. We become anxious about our anxiety. Dicken describes his past experience of anxiety like "I never knew when the world was going to make me feel bad." and feeling like life was akin to walking in a field of landmines, waiting for one to blow up. We can believe the label of being an anxious person - someone who is, whether by nature or nurture, predisposed to anxiety - but Dicken has never seen this to be accurate for any of his clients. Fundamentally, anxiety is simply an misunderstanding of why we feel anxiety - and then feeling anxious about the prospect of more anxiety. Is it possible to be freed from anxiety? Dicken talks about us not needing to work hard to look for freedom from anxiety when we see we already have what we're looking. Dicken described these steps that are helpful to understand this: Step 1. Recognise that 100% of your experience is created by thought  All of our feelings are being created by our thoughts  in that moment. This is direct contrast to what we're taught - e.g. that stressors cause stress. It's also contrary to how things look - if you're in a room and feeling good but someone walks in the room and you feel anxious, it's a very convincing illusion that your anxiety is being caused by the other person. When we see that our experience is coming from thought, it's the beginning of us letting go of the misunderstanding that's creating the anxiety problem. Step. 2 Seeing that a new thought will free you from the anxiety created by the current thought When we wake up to the nature of thought, we're open to a new thought flowing through - and thereby creating a completely different feeling. This is the opposite to to what we tend to do - which is to focus MORE on the anxious thought that has created the anxious feeling. We try to identify it, fix it and change it - all the more we continue to think about - and therefore feel - anxiety. When we wake up to what's really happening we focus more on our wellbeing than anxious thoughts. Step. 3 Understanding that we all have potential for infinite wisdom and wellbeing We're not limited to the boundaries of our physical brains, we all have a connection to infinite potential - more happiness, more love, more connection, more clarity, more creativity, more peace - when we look toward the non-conceptual space that's before our personal thinking.

He became licensed as a clinical psychologist in 1983 and retired his psychotherapy practice after working as a psychologist for 31 years. Twenty-eight years ago he met Sydney Banks who had an enlightenment experience where he realized the Three Principles that underlie all human experience. Dicken had finally found universal principles that he could teach anyone.
