On the 65th episode of the What is a Good Life? podcast, I am delighted to introduce our guests, George and Linda Pransky. In 1976, George and Linda stumbled upon a new way of helping people that was radically different from the traditional counselling methods they had been using in their work. The new principles they were learning had a huge impact on their personal lives, their relationship, and the way they worked with their clients. Through teaching these principles to their clients, they became pioneers in a new field of psychology, both serving as Partners of Pransky & Associates and on the executive committee of the Three Principles Global Community. Dr. George Pransky is also the author of The Relationship Handbook, Life is a Metaphor, and The Secret to Mental Health, as well as over fifty audio recordings. In this episode, George and Linda share their understandings around how people really change, through realisations rather than intellect and willpower. We discuss the importance of gratitude, patience, quiet, accountability, and faith in further realisations occurring. While we also explore how our thinking is often broken and how they both have moved from reacting to life to living life. This whole conversation is incredibly enlightening. George and Linda have so much wisdom to share, and in highlighting where our problems reside and sharing several anecdotes and insights, the whole conversation serves as an invitation to be drawn into your life rather than simply reacting to it.Subscribe for weekly episodes, every Tuesday, and check out my YouTube channel (link below) for clips and shorts. For further content and information check out the following:- For the podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/- George's latest book: The Secret to Mental Health- George & Linda's Website: https://www.pranskyandassociates.com/Contact me at mark@whatisagood.life to book a free consultation (30 minutes) for one-on-one coaching programs or click here to read about a leadership coaching program to build trust and connection amongst executive teams.Running Order:03:34 How do people really change?07:04 How we experience realisations10:30 The problem with our desire for change13:34 The role of faith - allowing answers to come19:30 Not seeking answers and slowing down24:47 Patience with our reactions31:00 Reacting to life, not living life35:39 The problem is our thinking around our problems40:34 Accountability for our thinking and experience44:24 Throwing away right and wrong46:15 What is a good life for George and Linda?

Lisa is joined by Sue Halpern who talks about her book A Dog Walks Into a Nursing Home: Lessons in the Good Life from an Unlikely Teacher. In chapters on restraint, prudence, faith, fortitude, hope, love, and charity, the author makes connections with the virtues as she watches Pransky deliver light and positive vibes — small miracles — to many lonely and isolated residents. She marvels at her dog's resiliency and the ways she brings joy, calm, and confidence to residents and staff. Pransky proves herself to be a wonderful spiritual teacher for both Halpern and the older people she showers with love and attention.A Dog Walks Into a Nursing Home: Lessons in the Good Life from an Unlikely TeacherIn late adolescence, Pransky was bored: she needed a job. and so Sue Halpern decided to give herself and her underoccupied Labradoodle a new leash—er, lease—on life by getting the two of them certified as a therapy-dog team. Pransky proved to be not only a terrific therapist, smart and instinctively compassionate, but an unerring moral compass as well. In the unlikely-sounding arena of a public nursing home, she led her teammate into a series of encounters with the residents that revealed depths of warmth, humor, and insight Halpern hadn't expected. Little by little, their adventures expanded and illuminated Halpern's sense of what goodness is and does—how acts of kindness transform the giver as well as the given-to.Funny, moving, and profound, A Dog Walks into a Nursing Home is the story of how one virtuous—that is to say, faithful, charitable, loving, and sometimes prudent—mutt showed great hope, fortitude, and restraint (the occasional begged or stolen treat notwithstanding) as she taught a well-meaning woman the essence and pleasures of the good life.

A great insightful conversation with Dr. Dicken Bettinger. Dicken became licensed as a clinical psychologist in 1983 and retired from his psychotherapy practice after working as a psychologist for 31 years. Thirty-three years ago, he met Sydney Banks who had an enlightenment experience where he realized the Three Principles that underlie all human experience. Dicken had finally found universal principles that he could teach anyone. He was grateful to find something that was simple in nature yet had the profound effect of raising the quality of a person's life. He feels fortunate that for 23 years he was able to learn directly from Sydney Banks. In 2008 Dicken received a Certificate of Competency from Mr. Banks authorizing him to teach the Three Principles. Dicken co-founded and was the director of a center in Vermont that was the first center in the Northeast to teach the Three Principles. He served as one of the original nationwide Core Faculty and is currently a faculty member for the Three Principles Global Community. In 1996 Dicken joined Pransky and Associates, a Three Principle-based institute in La Conner, Washington. Dicken was instrumental in developing and teaching leadership and staff development programs for universities, hospitals, publishing companies, defense contractors, health departments, banks, and non-profit organizations. He taught company employees what it takes to be resilient and agile in the face of today's business challenges and rapidly changing environments. He mentored CEOs and their leadership teams in raising the bar on their productivity, teamwork, and business success. He now specializes in developing 3 Principles practitioners, as well as leading group seminars on the Principles and their relationship to spiritual/psychological well-being. In January 2012 Dicken founded Three Principles Mentoring to deepen peoples' understanding of the 3 principles, develop 3P practitioners globally, and offer seminars in countries throughout the world. Dicken also deeply values his work as a director on the board of the Three Principles Global Community. This organization was formed to spread the teachings of Sydney Banks around the world. Dicken has been married for 52 years and loves teaching 3P Practitioners and running seminars worldwide on spiritual/psychological well-being. He has two adult children, Nina and Ben, and adores spending time with his four grandchildren. “All we are is peace, love, and wisdom, and the power to create the illusion that we're not.” —Jack Pransky This summer I stumbled across a book about the Three Principles (Mind, Consciousness, and Thought) as elucidated by Sydney Banks beginning in the 1970s. Intrigued, I read more books on the subject and decided to interview Dr. Jack Pransky, a leading teacher of the Three Principles. Jack has worked in the mental health field since 1968, learned about the Three Principles in the early '90s, and is now director of the Center for Inside-Out Understanding. No one defines resilience like Bevin Farrand, whose husband died unexpectedly just after her 40th birthday. Left with two young children to raise and a mountain of grief to navigate, this inspiring mom grew her digital consulting business while at the same time launching Take the DAMN Trip, a framework designed to help us live our best lives – not tomorrow, but today. As a speaker and coach, Bevin is all about grounding. Entrepreneurial dreams are a starting place but, without a solid foundation, they are all too likely to stall. That's where coaching can break down the task at hand. In the case of starting a business, it means getting really clear about both the vision and the “why” behind it. And that clarity, says Bevin, is what keeps us moving forward through even the toughest of times – something she knows plenty about. The tips, perspectives and tools come fast and furious in this episode of She Turned Entrepreneur, so buckle up and enjoy the ride. Bevin is sharing hard-won wisdom and down-to-earth tactics that are applicable to business, yes, but equally so to life! “None of us has the luxury of waiting,” says Bevin. So why not get started now? Ready to Do the DAMN Thing? You can get instant access to the secrets that unlock Bevin's powerful framework and get started with training by clicking here. Click here to join others who are ready to Take the DAMN Trip! Feeling anxious or overwhelmed? Bevin also offers a free centering meditation here. Click here to listen to, rate and review this or previous She Turned Entrepreneur episodes. Here are key takeaways from the conversation:· Have you ever been fired? Maybe more than once? It could be an invitation to become your own boss!· Take stock: Look at all the things that have been hard and all the things that have been wonderful in life. Then try applying the DAMN framework.· Come up with a framework or methodology to differentiate and make your business more memorable.· If our “why” is well-defined, it's far easier to move through challenging passages.· Get completely clear on your “what” and “why” the “how” will take care of itself!· There's a difference between permission and support. When we have clarity of purpose, we don't need permission.· We don't have to have a fully baked plan in order to have a manifesto, but we DO have to be all-in committed to ride out the inevitable bumps and U-turns.· Don't look at the top of the mountain. Just look at the first tree. To get past overwhelm, just move your feet, one step after the other.· The perfect mindset and moment will never arrive. So just get started! Here's a quick look into the episode:· Bevin had a false start with an unsuccessful entrepreneurial venture earlier in her career, but after being laid off for the third time in 2019 she put a stake in the ground, leveraging her digital marketing skills to start her own business.· Not long after she launched her business, Collaborate.Work, Bevin's husband died completely unexpectedly. She was suddenly the solo mom of two young children.· Bevin's Take the DAMN Trip movement – which is all about going for it and pursuing our dreams – grew organically out of watching her husband's life cut short.· Take the DAMN Trip has grown exponentially since 2020, resonating across demographics.· The DAMN Framework includes four powerful, yet simple, mindset shifts:o D - Decide and Declare.o A - Attend Your Own Party.o M - Moments not Minutes.o N - Now is the Time!· Bevin believes that when we shift our mindset (with help from her DAMN methodology), it's impossible to “unsee” what needs to happen in our lives.· Although she candidly admits that what she's teaching isn't completely unique, Bevin does underscore the DAMN framework that is personal and very specific to her coaching.· Bevin helps her clients get clear on:o The “Yes” – What are you ‘all in' on?o The “Why” – What fuels optimal health in all the key pillars:§ Financial§ Emotional§ Mental§ Social§ Physical § Spiritual · The first critical piece of Bevin's DAMN program: Figure out a vivid, foundational manifesto.· A big stumbling block many entrepreneurs are vulnerable to: Shiny Object Syndrome. It's all to too easy to get distracted and lose the thread of the original vision.· Bevin emphasizes getting grounded in reality with conscious declarations that widen confidence, clarity and momentum over time and in a layered way.· Once you create a clear, confident frame, the need for permission becomes irrelevant. You're not responsible for other people's feelings or reactions.· Bevin shares her PAD method: o Pause: Get present.o Acknowledge: Identify how you're feeling.o Do: Get into action!· Bevin starts by asking all her clients how committed they are, which matters when it comes to inevitable stressors and bumps (which can especially unsettle new entrepreneurs). · Tips for New Entrepreneurs:o Step 1: Go broad before going deep. Don't edit dreams! o Step 2: is to get specific. What are your “why” and “how”?o Step 3: Stick with it. Building a business or practice takes time.o Step 4: Give yourself some grace!· Feeling stuck? Bevin recommends getting started with 15-minute micro-actions that over time build momentum. · What's next for Bevin: o Nurturing along her book project.o Expanding and sharing the DAMN framework beyond the entrepreneurial space. About Bevin:As CEO and Founder of Collaborate.Work, Bevin partners with small businesses and entrepreneurs to execute launches and strategy, taking their businesses to 6- and 7-figure. She is also the visionary behind Take the DAMN Trip, a movement dedicated to the mission of fully living in the now. With this realization, Linda saw she no longer had to fear her own low moods; she would still have low moods but they no longer took over her life experience.  This led to true change for Linda and has allowed her to experience even the most difficult situations from a place of understanding, hope, and love.

FIRST CHAPTER FRIDAYS presents Deep Listening: A Healing Practice to Calm Your Body, Clear Your Mind, and Open Your Heart. World-renowned restorative yoga teacher Jillian Pransky came to the practice of yoga to heal herself. For much of her life, she subscribed to a relentless work hard/play hard mentality, burying parts of herself beneath the pursuit of busy-ness and accomplishment. It wasn't until a devastating personal loss and health crisis thrust her into suffocating anxiety that she stopped racing around. As she began to pause and examine her actions and emotions, she found herself able to unlock deeply seated tension in her mind and body. Since then, Pransky has been devoted to studying and teaching mindfulness practices, deep relaxation, and compassionate listening. Pransky doesn't ask you to “be your best self,” or “do more!” She asks you to “be here” and “do less.” She guides you gently through the stages of Deep Listening, from being present and noticing your tension to welcoming what you discover with softness and compassion. She integrates tools like guided meditations, journaling prompts, and restorative yoga poses to help you regard yourself with kindness and curiosity. Immersing yourself in the practice of Deep Listening will allow you to nurture your own well-being.

We can't help but relax when we speak with Dicken Bettinger. His way of being is so calming and the way he points to our innate health and wisdom is so clear and grounded.  Dicken learned about the understanding we work from directly from Sydney Banks. His life was transformed both personally and professionally after listening to Syd just one time, and he was able to enjoy many more opportunities to be mentored by Syd.  Prior to meeting Sydney Banks, Dicken was heavily involved in self-development.  After meeting him, Dicken pivoted and dropped self-help and shifted his approach to counseling. He no longer saw mental illness only wellbeing. He now viewed his clients (and his family) as having perfect mental health, but for being caught up in their thinking. He helps his clients to see their innate resilience and capacity to wake up from conditioned thinking.Dicken reminds us that we are built for shifts -- we're designed to have insights. And the best way to be impacted by an insight is to open to the feeling of it, rather than trying to understand it intellectually. This episode explores:How anxiety is created by our thinking not circumstanceThe power of insight and how staying with the feeling is what mattersThe original teachings of Sydney Banks and how they shaped the rest of Dicken's life and careerDestination as an illusion, there is only the presentBeing in a relationship helps wake us up to who we are and reveals our blind spotsDicken Bettinger, Ed.D., received his doctorate in counseling psychology and practiced as a licensed clinical psychologist for years. Rohini and Angus interview their mentors, George & Linda Pransky. The Pranksys share about how their relationship has evolved over time, and most notably how it changed after they met Syd Banks, the man who first conceptualized the understanding we speak about on this podcast.Linda describes their first year together as volatile and painful. After talking with Syd, they started getting over conflicts in their relationship quicker -- neither of them were taking things as personally anymore. Seeing that they were moving in the right direction together, they could ease up on trying to work to make the relationship better. Taking away this pressure allowed Linda and George to access a light-heartedness, and their fondness for each other increased tenfold. George warmly refers to his fondness for Linda now as "omnipresent fondness" that spans "wall to wall". By this he means there is no gap in his fondness for her, and so there's no longer anything to even not take personally. There's no issue! They are so united that they can both rest and trust in the fact that the other would never purposefully hurt the other. This makes asking for an apology, when necessary, easy. We let the simplicity and warmth of George and Linda's wisdom and love wash over us. We hope you enjoy "hanging out in their living room" as much as we did. This episode explores:The arbitrariness of thoughtIt's ok to disagreeRelationships as a united front transcends the individualsThe hum of fondness The before and after of the Pranksys learning this understandingShow notes:Hair on it: having something on it, in the business world. It's better to not have a hair on it.Mew: To Rohini's surprise, mew is indeed an alternative form of meow. Mew as a noun, is a gull or a place for hiding, as a verb it can refer to the cry of a cat. Meow refers solely to the cry of a cat.Linda Pransky specialized in psycho-social nursing, but grew disillusioned by techniques and approaches that didn't seem to create lasting change for people. After her and George met Sydney Banks in 1976, she saw a way to help people create sustainable change.  Dr. George Pransky has taught the principles for over 30 years to individuals, couples, businesses and colleagues -- he is one of the two professional founders of The Principles of Mind, Thought and Consciousness and the author of The Relationship Handbook. Both George and Linda serve on the executive committee of the Three Principles Global Community, and continue to pioneer this understanding with new industries and populations. They are both both Partners at Pransky & Associates. Learn more about their work. Angus & Rohini Ross are “The Rewilders.” They love working with couples and helping them to reduce conflict and discord in their relationships. They co-facilitate individualized couples' intensives that rewild relationships back to their natural state of love. Hunkering Down With Peter Schorsch

Peter Schorsch hunkers down with former WTSP Tampa investigative reporter Noah Pransky. Pransky left his work in Tampa holding government officials accountable, covering stadium deals involving the Tampa Bay Rays and famously hounding Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan over backroom stadium deals to work with a newly-launched digital news brand, NBC LX. Pransky dives into what life is like in New York City where he now lives as much of the city has been shut down as social distancing efforts ramp up in what has become the nation’s epicenter for the virus. He describes the city as eerily quiet, akin to what used to only happen early Sunday morning before the city wakes up. Central Park still has some activity, but Pransky said places like Times Square where tourists flocked in droves are largely deserted. Pransky also talks about the cultural differences that shape the way New Yorkers social distance. Tiny apartments mean tiny kitchens and refrigerators and most New Yorkers can only buy the groceries they can carry. All of that means a lot of take out from an otherwise shut down dining scene. Pransky’s new reporting work, like most of the media industry, has been dominated by the coronavirus pandemic. Though he said he’s trying to find the bright spots as people step up to do good for the community. He also weighs in on a recent report highlighting how likely citizens are to utilize a vaccine for COVID-19 when one becomes available. And listen closely as Peter spills the beans on one of Pransky’s less than glamorous former hobbies. Special Guest: Noah Pransky.

World-renowned restorative yoga teacher Jillian Pransky came to the practice of yoga to heal herself. But before that, she avoided her feelings by burying them under a relentless “work hard, play hard” schedule. It wasn't until a devastating personal loss took her through the dark halls of anxiety and into her own health crisis that she was forced to stop racing around. Since then, Pransky has been devoted to studying and teaching mindfulness practices, deep relaxation, and compassionate listening.  She serves as the Director of the Restorative Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Training for YogaWorks, and a guest teacher at many renowned holistic learning centers including Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and the Omega Institute, Mohonk Mountain House, and Blue Spirit Retreat Center. This week's show is with Erika Bugbee. Erika is a partner at Pransky and Associates and co-creator of the company's Online Learning Division.  For 35 years Pransky and Associates has helped individuals, couples, and executives who are motivated and open to learning relate to their minds differently so they're less affected by limitations, fears, and distress, and optimizes their enjoyment, peace of mind, and potential in life. Erika has a Masters degree in psychology and joined Pransky and Associates in 1999. She's married and has two kids, 12 and 14 years old and lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest region of the United States. In this show we explored what Erika's seen about the default setting that most of us have and how that gets in our way.  What you'll learn from this episode: Our minds often have a default setting like blaming ourselves, or looking for danger but they're not true, they're just the setting that our thoughts are being created through. We all have the opportunity to wake up to our settings at any moment - sometimes that comes from recognising the same setting in someone else. When that happens, the setting ceases to have the same power over us, it's no longer our default. Everyone's lows are going to feel different and individual to them but they're still part of the same predictable trend that all humans experience - all of us go from low to high moods. Understanding that allows us to take the lows less seriously and simply wait for our mood to rise again.

Dr. Joanne Pransky received her doctorate from Tufts University in the mid 1980's, and began championing public awareness and exposure to robotics and AI technology, playfully calling herself the “first robot psychiatrist.” Since then, she's been featured on CNN, The Discovery Channel, the Sci-Fi Channel, and even the Tonight Show with Jay Leno - aiming to expose the world to technology and it's ethical implications. In this interview, Dr. Joanne speaks with me about the virtues and vices of how the media portrays AI to the public… and why she likes recent AI movies like “Her” and “Ex Machina,” but questions scandalous newspaper headlines about industrial robots “killing people”, as well as her thoughts about the types of conversations that she believes America (and world) should be having in order to move technology forward safely and fruitfully.
