November 7, 2023 - An “antic, madcap noir with flair" (Wired) and “fast-paced cyberpunk story” (The New York Times Book Review) from one of South Korea's most revered science fiction writers, whose identity remains unknown, Djuna's Counterweight is an absorbing tale of corporate intrigue, political unrest, unsolved mysteries, and the havoc wreaked by one company's monomaniacal endeavor to build the world's first space elevator. Originally conceived by Djuna as a low-budget science fiction film, with literary references as wide-ranging as Joseph Conrad and the Marquis de Sade, Counterweight is part cyberpunk, part hard-boiled detective fiction, and part parable of South Korea's neocolonial ambition and its rippling effects. Djuna is a novelist and film critic, and a former chair of the Korean Science Fiction Writers Union. For more than twenty years they have published as a faceless writer, refusing to reveal personal details regarding age, gender, or legal name. Widely considered to be one of South Korea's most important science fiction writers, Djuna has published ten short-story collections and five novels. Anton Hur, the award winning translator of many Korean literature, discusses Djuna's writings and their impact in Korea, the genre of Korean science fiction, and literary translation from Korean to English in this conversation with Matthew Sciarappa. Today's political interviewees come from the Pirate Party and The Greens, and join me with Sasha Kehoe from Today Radio. Sven Clement and Djuna Bernard were both the youngest people elected to parliament at different times. Sven possibly has the best website domain name in Luxembourg: sven.lu, and is highly active across all social media, including Tictok. In 2009, Sven co-founded the Pirate Party in Luxembourg and became its first President. Amongst other things he is a successful entrepreneur with the launch of taxx.lu with Jerry Weyer. Elected to the Chamber in 2018, Sven is highly committed to citizen participation, transparency in the Chamber and digitization. Djuna Bernard is co-president of the Green Party and has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since December 2018. Djuna replaced Sam Tanson, when she became Housing and Culture Minister, making her the youngest deputy in the Chamber at 26 years old. As we talk through the way in which the election takes place, plus some news of the week with Sasha Kehoe, both Djuna and Sven give us their opinion with conviction, pointing to the 'disagreeing agreeably' method of discussion.

-What is ‘self-ignoring,' where does it come from, and how does it relate to codependency? -In addition to self-ignoring, what does codependency look like in medical providers? (hint, Patient Satisfaction Comes First!) -How can we slow down, focus on, and pay attention to our feelings in order to stop ignoring ourselves and start honoring our intuition?   Welcome to Episode 95! This week, we are graced with the presences of Djuna Osbourne, LCSW, to talk about her work with codependent medical providers. Djuna shares with us about the concept of self-ignoring and how integral it is to the development of our codependency since, early on, we learn to “ignore our alert system” while focusing on the needs of others. We discuss what codependency looks like in medical providers, both at work and home, and how the culture encourages such behavior. We conclude with ways Djuna addresses codependency in her clients using ISTDP: Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy. It's a must-listen! More on this episode's guest:   Djuna Osborne is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in Roanoke, VA. She loves working with medical providers, other therapists, and entrepreneurs to support their own healing so they can in turn support others in the work that they do. She specializes in helping clients connect to the most important relationship of all - that which they have with themselves, so that they can feel confident, secure, and happy.   www.djunaosbornecounseling.com  Helpful links for the podcast: Sign up for the newsletter to receive all things Codependummy: https://keap.app/contact-us/2302598426037497  Journal! She takes time to help us understand the concept of ‘self-ignoring,' and how that starts in childhood, is reinforced throughout our lives, and the long-term consequences of ignoring our “internal alert system.”   We then hear about Djuna's work with medical providers and ways she has observed codependent behaviors in their personal and professional lives. She describes how they often prioritize patient satisfaction in exchange for speaking up or pushing back. I ask about how our culture, medical institutions, and the hierarchy in the field encourage and enable codependent behaviors in medical providers. Djuna expands on how, through incentives, procedures, reputation, and status, they often stay stuck in codependent patterns at work.    Djuna provides an overview of ISTDP, Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, and the steps she takes with her patients to help them address the misery and lack of fulfillment in their lives. “The first thing I ask is ‘What is the problem you'd like my help with?” From there, she makes a very focused and precise effort to help her clients investigate their experiences to get in touch with their defenses, patterns, mechanisms, and feelings.    We end with Djuna answering how and why our relationship with ourselves is THE most important relationship.    Questions for you: What came up for you as you heard Djuna's definition of codependency?  How do you relate to her description of ‘self-ignoring?' Whether or not you are a medical provider, how do you relate to the codependent behaviors in doctors that Djuna describes? How can you take more time to slow down, focus in on, and explore a “small” experience or interaction that is taking up a “big” amount of space in your body and mind? What can you do to prioritize your relationship with yourself as THE most important relationship?   Thank you for coming on Djuna!   Thank you, dear listener, for listening!  PLEASE: Rate.  Review. Last week we shared the story of Djuna Barnes and you can't have Djuna without the story of Natalie Barney,  Natalie was born in October 1876 in Dayton Ohio to a very wealthy family. Raised with an appreciation of art, music, and culture from a very young age they spent weekends in museums and author readings. One reading while in New York over the summer took a young Natalie and her mother to a bookshop to listen to Oscar Wilde.  While he was speaking a group of young boys began throwing candied cherries at Natalie. When Oscar saw this he picked her up and put her on his knee and read a story to her. Later in life, she would date Oscar's niece. In 1887 she went to Paris for the first time with her mother who was chasing her dream of being an artist. It began her instant love affair with France and she would return four years later traveling all over Europe and finally settling in Paris. In Spain she met the red-headed beauty Eva Sikelianas and fell in love, She had known since she was 12 that she was a lesbian and vowed to live an out and normal life. Natalie had a rather open idea when it came to relationships. She always wanted to date more than one person at a time and wasn't ever going to be devoted to just one person. One dramatic relationship after another some ending suddenly and some with dramatic shows of love before walking away. It became a right of passage for any lesbian in Paris to have spent some time in her bed but not to stay too long. Natalie left her mark on Paris with her salons that she held for over 60 years. Every expat  & artist that came through Paris visited her weekly salon from Colette, Rodin, Cocteau, Peggy Guggenheim, Gertrude Stein, and Hemingway to name a few. In 1909 she moved to a home at 20 Rue Jacob that came complete with a temple.  The small Temple of Friendship with its Doric columns sat in the garden and if those columns could talk, they would have quite a story. Watching Colette dressed and performed as Mata Hari and the late-night parties with naked party goers. There is so much more to her life, sit back and listen to today's newest episode all about her life. More info and photos: https://www.claudinehemingway.com/paris-history-avec-a-hemingway-podcast-1Support Claudine on Patreon and get more of Paris and all her stories and benefits like discounts on her tours, custom history and exclusive content  https://www.patreon.com/bleublonderougefacebook https://www.facebook.com/BleuBlondeRougeInstagram https://www.instagram.com/claudinebleublonderouge/Sign up for the weekly Blue Blonde Rouge newsletter  https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5e8f6d73375c490028be6a76Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/Laviecreative)

In this episode, we're speaking with Djuna Osborne, a therapist based in Roanoke, VA. She went from charging as low as $0/session to charging $200/session in a town where the median household income is 25k.  In this episode, we will hear how growing up with conflicting money narratives - both attending a private school, but also having to beg other students for money so she could eat - impacted her money behavior when she went into her own private practice. In this episode, Djuna will share: How facing her money mindset issues helped Djuna become a better clinician; What it was like for Djuna to look for a premium fee therapist in her area and why she made the choice to pay more for her own therapy;  How increasing her fees allowed her to be more present with her family and children; Three things she was afraid of when raising fees; Three actionable things you can do right now to charge premium fees and improve your clinical skills.  Resources mentioned: Fun with Fees  4 Steps to Raise Your Fee Workshop More about Djuna:  Djuna Osborne, MSW, LCSW is a psychotherapist in private practice based in Roanoke, VA. She works with compassionate professionals - medical residents, attending physicians, entrepreneurs and other therapists - to help them cultivate their hearts and their minds so they can have greater confidence, prevent and work through burnout, and feel happy and fulfilled both in their professions and with themselves. As the spouse of a physician, Djuna lived through her husband's medical school and residency while simultaneously working in a hospital and obtaining her clinical training. She is keenly aware of the unique pressures of medicine and the way that our core values of "doing what is right" can be in conflict with organizational norms. Djuna has a deep passion for bringing more compassion into the world one person at a time. When she is not working with clients, she loves building community with other professionals, friends, and fellow citizens. She also loves spending time with her husband, two daughters and their beloved dog, Donut, road tripping anywhere an RV will go.  She can be reached at djuna@djunaosbornecounseling.com, djunaosbornecounseling.com or by calling 540-269-1551. Djuna Barnes, the woman who mingled with the Lost Generation was born in 1892 in New York and would leave her mark in Paris. Born into a rather different family, her father had two wives and would later marry Djuna off to his second wife's brother. Shortly after her mother had too much she took her kids and left for New York. There Djuna began working as a writer for the New York Eagle. Not only was she a talented writer but also an illustrator who would draw pictures that accompanied each of her articles. In 1921 she arrived in Paris and settled in Saint Germain. She instantly mingled with the newly arriving American ex-pat group and the large group of lesbians that settled in Paris led by Natalie Barney, who will talk about next week. The two had a short affair, which was a right of passage for just about every lesbian that arrived in Paris. Their relationship was short but remained friends as long as Djuna lived in Paris. Involved with Thelma Wood while in Paris, the two had a volatile relationship that was very public resulting in arguments due to Thelma's drinking. After it ended Djuna turned to drinking too much and also wrote The Nightwood based on their love affair and her best-known book. She began writing the book sitting in the Cafe de la Mairie across from Saint Sulpice where many other writers would do the same. When her drinking became too much, friend Peggy Guggenheim sent her to London and finally back to New York where she would spend time in an asylum. While there she decided to write a play about the dark dirty secrets of her family which didn't please her family at all. She would spend the rest of her life alone and living like a recluse in her New York apartment and lived until she was 90 years old, dying just 6 days after her birthday June 18, 1982. Listen to the newest episode of La Vie Creative - Paris History Avec A Hemingway today. More info and photos: https://www.claudinehemingway.com/paris-history-avec-a-hemingway-podcast-1Support Claudine on Patreon and get more of Paris and all her stories and benefits like discounts on her tours, custom history, and exclusive content  https://www.patreon.com/bleublonderougeFacebook https://www.facebook.com/BleuBlondeRougeInstagram https://www.instagram.com/claudinebleublonderouge/Sign up for the weekly Blue Blonde Rouge newsletter  https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5e8f6d73375c490028be6a76 Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/Laviecreative)

(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) In our current global situation and resulting personal life challenges, anxiety is a natural reaction. However, our bodies are not designed for chronic stress, and it can derail our well-being. Our day retreat will utilize mindfulness and embodied practices to relieve anxiety and restore a sense of trust in our body’s ability to self-regulate. Our sessions will weave Dharma wisdom, rhythmic breath work, and mindful movement emphasizing somatic awareness. These practices are designed to release chronic tension, regulate our nervous systems, calm reactivity, and develop a gentle relationship with ourselves. This process of resourcing will reconnect us with our innate calm presence, for agency over our responses and greater resilience. We will then turn toward the hindrance of anxiety and investigate its nuances with kindness and self-compassion. We may come to know anxiety as a teacher—one that deepens mindful awareness and a tender connection to our inner states.

In the first part of this episode, we introduce different types of crisis as well as communication strategies to deal with them. Two central readings here are: Benoit, W. L. (1997). Image repair discourse and crisis communication. Public Relations Review, 23(2), 177-187.  Coombs, W. T., & Holladay, S. J. (2012). The Handbook of Crisis Communication. Malden, MA: Wiley-Blackwell.  This link provides some examples of how broad crisis comms strategies are put into practice in specific messages: http://lirias.kuleuven.be/cv?Username=U0090854 Bernard mentions one communication strategy to head off a crisis, ‘stealing thunder’. It is for instance discussed in this article:  Claeys, A-S., Cauberghe, V., Leysen, J. (2013). Implications of stealing thunder for the impact of expressing emotions in organizational crisis communication. Journal of Applied Communication Research, 41(3), 293-308. As part of our discussion, Erika cites a study showing that even unnecessary apologies can make others more likely to respond to a request: Brooks, A.W., Dai, H., & Schweitzer, M. E. (2014). I'm sorry about the rain! Superfluous apologies demonstrate empathic concern and increase trust. Social Psychological & Personality Science, 5(4), 467-474. Our interview guest for this episode is Matteo Fuoli, whose publications include: Fuoli, M., & Hart, C. (2018). Trust-building strategies in corporate discourse: An experimental study. Discourse & Society, 29(5), 514-552. Fuoli, M., & Paradis, C. (2014). A model of trust-repair discourse. Journal of Pragmatics, 74, 52-69 Fuoli, M., van de Weijer, J., & Paradis, C. (2017). Denial outperforms apology in repairing organizational trust despite strong evidence of guilt. Public Relations Review, 43(4), 645-660. Matteo in turn makes reference to this study on regaining trust: Kim, P. H., Ferrin, D. L., Cooper, C. D., & Dirks, K. T. (2004). Removing the shadow of suspicion: the effects of apology versus denial for repairing competence- versus integrity-based trust violations. Journal of Applied Psychology, 89(1), 104–118.  The model of trust that he mentions is explained in  Colquitt, J. A., & Salam, S. C. (2009). Foster trust through ability, benevolence, and integrity. In Locke, E. (ed.) Handbook of Principles of Organizational Behavior. 2nd ed. Chichester: Wiley, pp. 389-404. In the course of the interview, Matteo provides some detail of his research in: Fuoli, M. (2012). Assessing social responsibility: A quantitative analysis of Appraisal in BP’s and IKEA’s social reports. Discourse & Communication, 6(1), 55-81. Fuoli, M. (2015). Trust dynamics in multimodal corporate discourse: the role of metaphor. Paper presented at 13th International Cognitive Linguistics Conference (ICLC-13), Newcastle/UK. The video by pharmaceutical company Novartis that Matteo talks about is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzXFugXU33M In the final part of the episode, we analyse a letter featuring an apology, written in 1928 by artist Thelma Wood to her former lover, the writer Djuna Barnes:  Djuna beautiful - I know I had lost you - I realized every misdeed committed in eight years would come back - that every one in Paris would be against me … The knowing you saw us, I had said such terrible things I hated myself - something I did not care about  - It seemed a shame for foolishness to spoil us - I wanted no acknowledged disloyalty and after you came back from N.Y. I loved you so terribly - and my one idea was to wipe out the fact I’d been stupid … As for the rest of our eight years you seemed to have had a pretty rotten time - with my brutishness and I’m sorry - sorry  The letter is quoted in  Weiss, A. (1995). Paris was a Woman: Portraits from the Left Bank. San Francisco: Harper.  Happy Valentine’s Day to all listeners and readers!

Find Laura here: Website // Shop // Facebook // Instagram // Twitter Laura Collins a handbag designer and the woman behind Pansy Maiden & Stitch Rx. Pansy Maiden was born in the Spring of 2009. A year before, Laura knew very little about the “business” world and very little about designing and sewing bags. What she did know was she wanted her life’s work to mean something. She had spent the last decade fumbling through several career paths hoping that one of them would feel right. Before blowing 30 candles out on her birthday cake, her professions ranged from PBS TV Production Assistant in Indiana, Warner Bros. production intern in LA, Associate Director of an all-girls summer camp in Connecticut, and Executive Assistant to the CEO at a publishing company in Massachusetts. She woke up on my 30th birthday and realized what was missing: a purpose.   We had a great time chatting with Laura. She shared so much about how Pansy Maiden came to be and how she wanted to it a brand and company that reflected her life beliefs. It wasn't just about making money, it was also about affecting the world positively. She also talks a lot about how her business shifted when she had her daughter, Djuna. "Now that I've had my daughter I want to do really well in business for myself mainly, but also to show her that someone can have the ability to bring money into the household and contribute in that manner while also building the business and having the ability to work from home. Making the sort of life that you want rather than just settling for what's maybe easiest." Laura shares with us that she never thought she would start a business and sell things that she makes.  She jokes that she put her self through "Handmade University," where she spent months and months researching how to make Pansy Maiden work. She describes success for her right now as, "Working for myself in a creative capacity where I have total control over my own time...and the ability to contribute to our household income." A big turning point or shift for Laura's business and also how the idea of StitchRx was born was he birth of her daughter. Laura realized the way she was running Pansy Maiden was not sustainable. She had to reevaluate her idea of success as well as reevaluate her business. "You can't have it all, it doesn't exist...It's all about trying to figure our how you can make it work for you."
