Fitness and Faith Derrick Johnson pt 2 Physical fitness is something that every person, regardless of age, needs to keep up on. When we think of physical fitness, a lot of time we think of dirty gyms, nasty locker rooms, big hunks that smell and look down on anyone that is not like them. Amen. But it is not that at all. When I was growing up in high school, I was anything but fit. I played sports, but was not considered an “athlete” by any stretch of the imagination. But, once I joined the military, they “kind of have a way” of getting you into shape right away. I was impressed with what I had become and decided to continue down that road of physical fitness. Our guest today is Derrick Johnson, also an Army veteran, a life coach, a trainer and someone who shares his mission of helping others tap into their true potential. Derrick came also came from a childhood of being bullied and as a shy child. Physical fitness became his outlet. Now, he helps folks – just like you – to gain the confidence and physical prowess that comes from becoming physical fit. Amen! Derrick specializes in helping you turn just about any pain in your life into FUEL to help FAITH be your guide through life! Amen! Today is part two and the conclusion of a really interesting and important interview. If you missed ANY of part one, go back and catch up! Amen! How does our physical fitness relate to our spirituality? You share we should make a list of things we DO NOT WANT and the “flip the pain” into fuel to move forward. Can you explain this for us? I believe one thing we never realize is that we are influencing people all of the time – even when we are not aware of it. Examples would be our kids, our coworkers, etc. Share a little bit about how many people may depend on us – some of which we may not even be aware of – and how our fitness level may relate to that… Should we try achieve a level of fitness that somebody else has? Should that be our goal? Or should we be content with our own fitness goals – even if they are not that impressive to others? I know you recommend everyone should try to achieve two things in the morning, one physical and one mental, just to motivate ourselves during the day. Can you explain how that would work for our listeners? How did you get started in this fitness business? What led you to do this? What is your goal for your business and how do you see yourself achieving this goal? I know you have a website, FitWithDerrick.com – there are a lot of testimonials on there. This is not yet clear to a lot of people: in 2023, our job is to help our families, friends and neighbors survive the cultural revolution with our relationships with God healthy and intact. We'd like to start out by apologizing for the lateness of this episode. We're still here, still making content, and intend to keep it up. In this slightly-less-board-gamey-than-usual episode we ate some crunchy snacks spelled with an unnecessary "Z" and hit up Steam to play a couple of party games that are similar to but not actually part of the Jackbox series of games. Also, we fell in love with the colonel. WHAT THE FOOD We ate some puffed crunch products that may or may not have contained a tornado. Or a nacho. But definitely not a tornacho, which is good because those things can drive a tortilla chip right through a telephone pole. AWKWARD This game was well-named; we have to give it that. It was a Jackbox-style game without nearly as much style. USE YOUR WORDS This is another Jackbox-style game, but this one had so much style that it should've come with its own runway. Who knew that there were better subtitles to be had than "DO NOT WANT"? Smiling Buddha Games did, that's who. SURPRISE NON-LIVE-PLAY GAME Oh my, are you ever in for a treat. I know we were. We hope you're hungry, because this review is finger-lickin' good. Your Creative Sparks: Your life’s PHILOSOPHY can be as SIMPLE as doing what is right in front of you. Sometimes CLARITY begins with knowing what we DO NOT WANT. Why worry, when IT ALL WORKS OUT in the end? Part two of four on our adventure in West Africa. Hang out with us on the porch under the hot African sun, while Lobsterbird endeavors to ply open the hearts behind the hands of Saori and Miyamoto. Undisguised and unpretentious as they come, these two volunteers simply followed the flow of life to Diébougou and found happy meaning among the singing children. Leave us a Rating & Review! Your Travelogue How did Saori come to be in Africa? By airplane!, of course. This artist draws with the children of Diébougou. [2:20] Saori’s philosophy of life is quite simple. She does what is in front of her. When asked what she WANTS to do in life, her response is that she is far more clear on what she DOESN’T want to do, like to go business meetings or wear fancy, poofy clothes. [8:46] Saori doesn’t get caught up in thinking about problems, her own or the world’s. Does she have any problems? “I can’t think of any,” she says, “But if I started coughing, I would be more concerned about my health than about the problems of the world.” [14:04] The Diébougou children follow Saori and Miyamoto around. Saori humbly dismisses the gesture and remarks that they are just interested because her skin is a different color. But Sophia sees deeper into the special relationship there… [19:20] Miyamoto’s philosophy of life is to say yes, always to everything. This freedom to say yes included many years of drug use. “I used drugs to free myself, but in the end, I was captive to drugs,” he says. “It became the opposite. So I quit. I came to realize that there is more freedom without drugs.” [24:05] What does Miyamoto think of Diébougou? It simply happened by chance. He hasn’t traveled anywhere else, so he has nothing to compare it to. The children here pay attention to him, and so he pays attention to them. This makes him happy. [38:20] Like Saori, Miyamoto doesn’t spend his time in worry. What about poverty? War? Diseases? “Of course everything exists,” he says. “There is nothing that is weird about having them. But I don’t join inside. I join poverty, but I’m not thinking that I’m poor. I don’t have money, but I’ve never had a problem with money. I always have what I need for the day. [45:00] Happiness for Saori and Miyamoto is not a goal in and of itself. Happiness seems to be a natural outcome from a simple life that is free from worry and goes with the flow. This Podcast Is Episode Number 0240 And It Will Be About Construction Accounting Secrets For New Contractors Construction Accounting Basics For Construction Contractors Construction Accounting is not a natural mindset for Construction Contractors. Construction Accounting has own language. Regular Accounting the language is Income Minus Expenses Equals Net Profit. Construction Accounting is Income Minus Cost of Goods Minus Overhead Equals Net Profit. That simple little thing called Cost of Goods Sold is the primary difference between Regular Accounting and Construction Accounting. Understanding that difference and how it relates to Job Costing and Job Profitability can get contractors like you firmly on the road to financial freedom. Then comes Construction Accounting. Income is added up to have Total Income. Cost of Goods Sold included more than the cost of material. Total Income less Total of Cost of Goods Sold equals Gross Profit. Expenses include a variety of overhead related items. Gross Profit less Total Expenses equals Net Ordinary Income. Net Ordinary Income Plus Other Income and Less Other Expenses equals Net Income. Financial Reports have a lot of information on them. Your tax accountant will calculate the depreciation. When a contractor purchases a small tool, and it is an expense. What determines whether a tool is an asset or expense is the cost of the tool (not its size of the tool or piece of equipment) Any tool or equipment that costs less than Five Hundred Dollars is considered an expense. The Internal Revenue Service expects that it will last less than one year and not repairable or the cost of purchasing a new tool will be less than the cost to repair it most of the time it is not feasible to repair. These days it is hard to find anyone who can do repairs on small tools. The neighborhood hardware store is usually a True Value Hardware or Ace Hardware. I can only think of a few larger Hardware Store that might send the tool out for repairs. Smaller communities may have repairs as a common option. As a contractor you may purchase a tiny tool (in size) but huge in price meaning it cost over Five Hundred Dollars. These type of tools need to be depreciated. Congress approves an accelerated depreciation (Section 179) where most items can be depreciated at a 100% in a single year. This benefits small contractors as the annual threshold is usually higher than they spend on tools and equipment. Each of these larger tools needs to be listed in the Accounting Software (we use QuickBooks Desktop In the Cloud) and we can setup QuickBooks for Contractors in a way that makes it fast and easy for the day to day contractor bookkeeping to get done. Why – Because the Tax Accountant decides on what can group and which tools and equipment need to be itemized individually. The rules differ depending on the item on how much can be depreciated on a single line and which items may have internal caps. Short Answer - In other words, How many lines and How many pages does it take to get to 100%. If taking all of the depreciation available does not make sense to take it a single year the Tax Accountant may decide to use traditional depreciation rules. Using the thought that if taking 100% of the available depreciation doesn’t help you – don’t waste the depreciation deduction. Spread it out over several years. What is Cost of Goods Sold In Construction Accounting? Contractors often ask us can they buy our Chart of Accounts with Cost of Goods Sold and import them into their QuickBooks Desktop file or their QuickBooks Online file. The answer is yes! Click Here for QuickBooks Desktop Chart of Accounts With Cost of Goods Sold Click Here for QuickBooks Online Chart of Accounts With Cost of Goods Sold Direct Costs are tied to the jobs (field labor, material, and other cost items) Office material (pencils, paper, toner, etc. are overhead) Yes, an Accountant could say these many pencils are used in the field, and that notepad is used in the truck. The answer is the dividing line of what the DIRECT COSTS to the job and those are Cost of goods sold (COGS). Confusion always comes about the material. A Construction Contractor may purchase material and resell it to their customer at cost. Thereby thinking it is a reimbursable expense. (Lose money when doing this). Remember all invoices to the Customer (Retail, General Contractor, Spec Builder, Developer) is income. Washington State has a clear explanation. If the words are on the invoice, then the invoice is either taxable or non-taxable based on other factors. Every line item on a customer invoice is All INCOME. Purchases for the material are Cost Of Goods Sold or are expenses if you are shortcutting your accounting. I have seen financial statements that are backed out because they will reflect reimbursable income as a negative number and thereby show it as a deduction. (Net effect is double dipping on the expense side) The cause is the accounting software like QuickBooks is not properly set up. We fix bad QuickBooks Setup For Construction Contractors. New Construction Home Building is another area of confusion. In the mind of many Construction Contractors, a Spec home is any new house that is being built for resale. That is true; it is a New Construction House. The question is on the Construction Accounting side. For the Owner and Developer (who might be the General Contractor running the job) it is a Spec Home. For the General Contractor who is building a New Construction Home for a Developer, it is NOT a Spec Home. Why it might seem the same as both are New Construction Houses. Question to be answered is Who owns the house? It is a Spec House in the Accounting System for THE OWNER. If the General Contractor Does Not Own the house then from an accounting side for that specific General Contractor, the house is a Custom Home who has an owner who is Not The General Contractor. If the General Contractor, Developer who Owns the new House being built then it is a Spec House in the Accounting System. All costs roll up into WIP and covert to COGS when the house is sold not before. Recognize expenses when the house sells. Otherwise, expenses one year; sale the next equals TAXES. In Washington State, all Construction Contractors working for a Spec Builder need to collect sales tax on all services (labor and material) when billed from the General and Trade Construction Contractors. In Washington State, all Construction Contractors working on a Custom Home, Residential or Commercial Projects, Large or Small Remodels, Handyman Projects can accept reseller permit from the General Contractor. Sales Tax is billed and collected from the Owner by the General Contractor. In Washington State, Contractors need to collect sales tax on all retail project including Labor, Material, Other. Sales tax must be collected on every line item. Customer Discounts can be given for any reason. One quick word about hiring subcontractors. Make sure they are licensed and bonded based on the rules of your state. Review and make sure you are not their only customer. As Construction Contractor, you Do Not Want for any Government Agency (State or Federal) to re-classify them as your employee. Government Agencies share names, and there are Payroll taxes for everyone. Part of rules, a 1099 Contractor must work for more than one person or company. Get a signed W-9. Internal Revenue wants to have 1099’s issued for everyone who received over six hundred dollars in a single calendar year. If you have employees, Use a payroll service that will electronically file Quarterly and Annual Returns. Many will also file the 1099’s. Keep your reporting simple and easy. Easier to prove you filed on time. Having an outside Construction Accountant makes meeting the rules as a contractor versus an employee easier. Listen HEREThis week I read an essay written by Eva Batt, long standing member of the UK Vegan society. It is so well written, I am going to print it out and hand it around as part of my activism. Thanks to Nathan Schneider who has it available on his blog Vegan Abolitionist and to Randy Sandberg who added it to the text page here at Abolitionist ApproachOne of the things I loved about the article was this point:"...veganism has no connection with any political party or system, national or international. Similarly, individual vegans may be deeply religious, perhaps devout Christians or disciples of one of many other faiths and creeds in this world, but this is not a requisite of veganism, which is an everyday, fundamental way of life concerned with living without hurting others. The hereafter may, or may not, solve all our problems; but what we do now certainly affects all those around us..."That is a wonderful statement is it not? First, we should remember that we are also vegan pioneers but in different and better circumstances. For example, we have the advantages of the internet and need never feel as isolated as the first vegans probably often did. Being a vegan is easier now than in the 1940s and 1950s (even compared to the 1970s when I became vegan). However, some new vegans are going to find it harder than others and we should help these new pioneers as much as possible, for mainstream animal advocacy neglects the fact that there is a vegan moral baseline to animal rights advocacy.This brings me to the second point: what are we campaigning for. It seems to me that campaigning to grow the ethical vegan community (the surest means by which we can help other animals at this time) is campaigning for what we WANT as opposed to campaigning for what we DO NOT WANT in the name of politics, or pragmatics, or ‘living in the real world.’For example, look at this 3-min video (just released this very week) about a cage-free system: http://www.worldpoultry.net/news/video-special-layer-aviary-system-4066.html Do we want to campaign FOR this sort of thing as many do, or do we want to campaign against by growing the numbers of ethical vegans?Look at the pictures here: http://www.ciwf.ie/farminfo/farmfacts_egghens.html We could say, ‘spot the difference,’ but the picture on the left is an ‘enriched’ battery cage and the other is a standard one. The first will probably have a perch in the back and maybe some ‘nesting material.’ Leaving aside the issue of who is going to monitor this new way of regulating atrocities, do we want to campaign FOR this sort of thing as many do, or do we want to campaign against by increasing the numbers of ethical vegans until we have enough numbers to make some real changes for nonhuman animals?The real question is where do we put our energy, commitment, time and money. Do we concentrate on what we actually want, or on something else - which we then have to campaign against anew later on. The advocates of ‘cage-free’ (or one big horrible cage) must assume that, later, they will be campaigning against the system they helped to put in place in the first place.Roger Yates
