Welcome back to I Killed My Tamagotchi! The tape's rolling and Alex "A-Town" Ryan drops a confession that completely changes the way he experienced some of the biggest shows of the '90s.That revelation sends Tommy and Alex down a slime-covered rabbit hole through the golden age of Nickelodeon game shows. From Double Dare and GUTS to Legends of the Hidden Temple and Figure It Out, the guys debate which shows they could have actually won, which kids had no business being contestants, and whether Double Dare may have been secretly rigged all along.Along the way, they revisit the O.J. Bronco chase interrupting the NBA Finals, celebrate Jurassic Park's anniversary, remember Discovery Zone, argue over game show prizes, and prove that no conversation stays on track for very long.Plus, the second Heartthrob email arrives with a new clue for Alex and Mat's mysterious admirer, bringing them one step closer to the Sock Hop Dance.Grab your team colors, avoid the Temple Guards, and whatever you do, don't let the Purple Parrots win.
Hallmark Hanukkah Month rolls on with 'Hanukkah on the Rocks' (2024)!This week, Josh and Jennifer head to a cozy bar, spend some time with Stacey Farber and Daren Kagasoff, and try to decide exactly where this movie lands on the Gold-or-Coal spectrum. The movie earns points for charm, atmosphere, and one very nostalgic surprise appearance from Double Dare legend Marc Summers. But does it have enough sparkle to become a Hallmark Hanukkah favorite?Join us as we recap the story, discuss what worked, what didn't quite land, and hand down our official verdict. And yes... there are more than a few Double Dare references along the way.
Text Us Here!Everything feels better when the rules are clear, the stakes are fun, and you can play along from the couch. That's why we couldn't stop arguing about game shows, the classics we grew up on, the weird ones that aged badly, and the newer formats that crank the risk knob to max.We start by trying to define what even counts as a “game show” and immediately break our own brains. Is it only trivia and puzzles like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, or does any competition with a prize qualify? We go down the rabbit hole far enough to (jokingly) label sports as game shows, then climb back out to celebrate the stuff that actually shaped our TV childhoods: Supermarket Sweep chaos, American Gladiators energy, and the Nickelodeon era that had Legends of the Hidden Temple, Double Dare, and Guts locked in the after school hall of fame. Then we hit the darker side of the genre, like The Moment of Truth, where “winning” comes with real life consequences, and we talk about why that kind of discomfort TV works even when it feels gross. We also pitch the comeback we want most: Cash Cab rebuilt for the rideshare age, with rotating cities and surprise trivia for everyday riders. And because we can't end like normal people, we close with a brain fun fact about why your mouth muscles still activate when you read silently.Subscribe, share this with a fellow game show addict, and leave us a review with the one show you'd bring back. What makes nostalgia feel real instead of manufactured? In this episode, Mike sits down with Mark Jaworski from HOMAGE Apparel to talk about the emotional engine behind retro branding. From NFL logo strategy to cult-classic movie tees, the conversation explores how a brand built on storytelling stays authentic while still staying relevant. Mark and Mike dig into why cities with long sports histories generate deeper nostalgic connections, what makes a brand forgettable versus beloved, and how passing down the things we love, whether a team's throwback jersey or a Stone Temple Pilots concert, creates bonds that last. This is brand strategy disguised as a very good conversation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Logo-driven and story-driven fandom can coexist. Each serves a different segment of the fan base, and a brand strong enough to speak to both has a serious edge. Cities with long sports histories carry richer nostalgia menus, but emotional resonance comes from the storytelling, not just the age of the team. Being forgettable is more dangerous than being disliked. A strong brand narrative insulates against trends and keeps an audience coming back. Nostalgia is a bridge between generations. The things we pass down, jerseys, songs, movies, catchphrases, create bonds that last a lifetime. Slow, steady brand building rooted in storytelling outlasts overnight success and fad-driven spikes. Slow and steady wins the race. WHO IS THE GUEST? Mark Jaworski Director, Marketing Operations | HOMAGE Apparel Mark is part of the marketing and storytelling team behind HOMAGE Apparel, one of the most recognizable nostalgia-driven apparel brands in sports and pop culture. Since 2007, HOMAGE has built a following through retro-inspired apparel celebrating iconic moments, legendary athletes, classic movies, wrestling, music, and vintage Americana. With a background in English and a passion for the stories that move people, Mark brings a narrative-first lens to everything HOMAGE does. White Castle steam-griddle station... ambience. The perspective of this week's episode is near the burger steaming station (if you're curious how that operation goes, let Double Dare's Marc Summers walk you through it). And not to worry — you can sleep at this steaming station; no one is worried about what you're doing. And BTW, this isn't sanctioned or intended to be an ad. I'm just a fan and would love to imagine myself within arm's length of those steamy sliders. I have a bit of a White Castle problem: I have the White Castle Pumas, I'm usually a sack of ten and a Cherry Coke (no fries) — if I were hungry enough to add fries at any other fast-food spot, I'm spending that hunger on another sack of ten.And as a programming note: if the White Castle Corporation sends me a cease-and-desist, this description will instead be geared toward the oddly shaped meatloaf burgers my father would make, stuffed with Bac-Os, mushrooms, breadcrumbs, and onions. The patties were so oddly shaped, if they were in orbit they would be confused with Saturn's moon, Hyperion. One of the most notorious of these family “burger nights” ended with us watching a VHS of my mother at work in the cath lab. Had to wait until the end because she said something funny. Aside from the occasional flying streams of blood, it was hella boring.Until then — we are boosting the Castle for free. And I have to think that the oft-trod subject of “Where the hell are they?” adds to their nostalgic appeal — at least for those of us who know there are a bunch in New Jersey, but we're not quite sure where. I swear the White Castles of New Jersey operate in the Doctor Who universe. White Castles only ever appear like, “Surprise *****! I'm in Ledgewood now!” And then maybe it's not there next time because… TARDIS perception filter. And I haven't seen the Dude, Where's My White Castle? movie, so I could just be describing the plot of that. It's a thread that runs through all of us. No matter where we as a species go — like, we could be going into space — we still somehow need to drive through New Jersey first (and hopefully near a food exit with a Castle logo).I was on a road trip with a buddy in '09, and White Castle was the “food exit” around Perth Amboy. I nudged him: “White Castle, man — let's go.”“Nah, man,” he said. “There'll be one up there. Don't worry.” My buddy never liked leaving the highways in NJ for local roads. I suspected the lack of legal left turns spited him somehow. But I countered with a pre-I-told-you-so — like, “If you see a White Castle, even if you're not hungry, you go. It doesn't matter how New Jersey you think that New Jersey town is — you can't count on White Castle being there.”Parsippany burned us, and we ate Burger King or some ****.

Under the looming shadow of the smash hit kids game show Double Dare, producers in 1987 bet on a new spin on the format: what if, instead of general knowledge and trivia interspersed with wacky physical challenges, we had kids circle “hidden” images in a poorly drawn doodle and then run through a model home at the behest of fading Land of the Lost star Wesley Eure? The result was Finders Keepers, which ran on Nickelodeon for some 130 episodes before being tossed into syndication. Chris actually liked this one *more* than Double Dare as a little kid. Just how deranged was he? Very! Watch the full video episode on YouTube: YouTube.com/@nowweknowpod

Tale a seat on an orange couch and get ready for a nostalgia road trip.In part 1 of our discourse on Nickelodeon we talk about the founding of the network in the late 1970's as commercial free kids programming to the network's acquisition by Warner which led to & the so called "Orange Years" (1983-1996) while trying to gain a broader understanding of how Nickelodeon became what it is today While some people seemed to always have had the best intentions, the early years of Nickelodeon set the ground work for everything that would follow. From shows like You Can't Do That on Television and the introduction of slime and competition shows like Double Dare to scripted series like Salute Your Shorts, Pete & Pete, Clarissa Explains it All & Are You Afraid of the Dark? In the 1980's and early 90's Nickelodeon was a cornerstone for kids programming. But how did a network which basically started as public broadcasting with the intent of making children feel seen become a safe haven for some of the most predatory people in the entertainment industry? It started with the Orange Years. (content warning: part 1 only covers up to 1995 so we won't be discussing Quiet on Set yet, abuse is still referenced in this episode & shows like Ren and Stimpy that are discussed in this episode will be talked about in greater detail for part 2, Part 3 will start with the All That spin offs) Sources:The Orange Years (documentary)Slimed! Brother Bear learns to think for himself despite what the gang around him says.
If you've had kids in your house sometime over the last 20 years, you've likely encountered Slime. This children's toy was most popular in the late 90s and early 00s when the TV show Double Dare on Nickelodeon was at its peak. Today, kids don't settle for the little plastic container you can buy at your neighborhood big box store. They prefer to make it at home. I thought Slime first gained popularity with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But I recently found out it hit store shelves in the 1970s when I was a teen. “I was following my North Star and definitely loving what I was doing—just not how I was doing it.” ~ Molly CarrollI'll never forget waking up one morning in Costa Rica while leading a women's retreat. Surrounded by yoga, healthy food, and meaningful transformation, I should've felt alive and fulfilled. But instead, I felt utterly exhausted. So I took a solo walk on the beach—not to escape, but to survive.Even though I was in my zone of genius—supporting others and sharing tools for healing—I was deeply burned out. At the time, I had over 30 clients, was writing books, had just finished a TED Talk, was running retreats, parenting two kids, and helping care for my mother as she battled cancer. I was giving everything I had to everyone else. But underneath it all, I was fighting internal demons: shame, perfectionism, fear I wasn't doing enough—or being enough—as a therapist, mom, wife, and daughter.I was experiencing what Scott Anderson, our guest this week on the Cracking Open podcast, calls burnout. And wow… do I wish I had Scott's work back then. But lucky for all of us—he's here now. And he's here to help you.Scott Anderson is the author of You're Not Toast and founder of DoubleDare, a coaching organization helping high-achieving professionals break free from burnout. With 30+ years of business ownership, therapy training, and ICF coaching credentials, Scott's work blends business acumen with a deep understanding of the emotional and mental toll burnout takes.Scott's own story is one of profound transformation. After losing his son Max to addiction, Scott found himself broken, exhausted, and questioning everything. That grief led him to reevaluate his life, uncover his values, and rebuild with more humility and purpose. From this space, the Burnout Breakthrough Method was born—a framework that helps people reconnect with their energy, release emotional weight, and create sustainable, joyful success. In today's conversation, we talk about:✨ What burnout really is (hint: it's not just being tired)✨ Why high-achievers are most at risk✨ The intersection of grief, purpose, and healing✨ How to recover quickly and permanently from burnout✨ Why passion isn't enough—and how to work in a way that doesn't cost your health or soulIf you're feeling exhausted, disconnected, or like you're carrying the weight of the world, let this episode be your own beach walk—an invitation to slow down, reflect, and reconnect.Because there's more joy available to you than you could ever imagine.
Burnout is more than exhaustion—it's often a sign that we're clinging to outdated roles, habits, or expectations. Scott Anderson, a licensed mental health therapist and founder of Double Dare, views burnout as a form of “self-inflicted suffering” that can serve as a wake-up call for personal transformation. His work redefines success, urging individuals to listen to their internal signals rather than push harder through stress. Through tools like the Genius Zone framework and the R&R Technique, Scott helps high achievers realign with what truly matters. He guides clients in identifying the few tasks that create the greatest impact, while also addressing emotional blocks like perfectionism, guilt, and resentment. By combining strategic delegation with emotional clarity—especially the power of self-forgiveness—Scott enables people to reduce overwhelm and reconnect with meaning in their work and life. For anyone feeling burnt out, disengaged, or overwhelmed, Scott's book You're Not Toast offers a powerful, practical roadmap to recovery. It's designed for entrepreneurs, leaders, and professionals ready to reclaim control and restore clarity. Visit his website to learn more and access his proven burnout recovery resources. Have you ever wondered if your drive for success could be holding your business back? In this episode of Predictable B2B Success, host Vinay Koshy sits down with Scott Anderson, serial entrepreneur, author of You're Not Toast, and founder of Double Dare, to expose the hidden dangers of burnout for high-achieving professionals and founders. Scott shares his raw journey: from launching 10 companies and selling eight to hitting a wall of exhaustion that sleep, weekends, and vacations couldn't fix. You'll discover why the very grit and hustle that fuel growth in the early days can quietly transform into a ceiling on your revenue—and even endanger your health and business. Scott unpacks the subtle signals leaders often miss, explains why hustle culture is not a strategy for scalable success, and reveals actionable techniques, like his 5-second R&R method, to break the burnout cycle quickly. If you're secretly feeling stuck, tired, or can't scale past that next revenue milestone, this conversation will challenge everything you think you know about perseverance, leadership, and growth. Tune in to learn how saying no and letting go might be your smartest business move this year. Some areas we explore in this episode include: Scott Anderson's Personal Burnout Experience: How Scott recognized his own burnout and began seeking solutions.Burnout in High Achievers: Why successful professionals are especially at risk of burnout. The Double-Edged Sword of Perseverance: How traits that drive business success can also lead to burnout.Scaling Challenges and Revenue Plateaus: Mistakes entrepreneurs make when trying to grow their businesses beyond early milestones.Early Warning Signs of Burnout: Key symptoms and overlooked indicators of burnout in leaders.Delegation and Building Systems: The need for founders to delegate and build scalable systems to prevent burnout and enable growth.Shifting Leadership Mindsets: Moving from founder-centric leadership to a more humble, team-oriented approach.Hustle Culture vs. Sustainable Growth: Debunking the myth that nonstop hustling leads to long-term success.Practical Burnout Prevention Techniques: Tools like the R and R Technique for managing stress on the go.Implementing the Burnout Breakthrough Method: How Scott's approach boosts cognitive capacity and resilience for leaders and their teams. And much, much more...

Hey y'all – Today my guest is long-time friend and personal pilot – Marty Stanton. Marty's daughter graduated from some college in San Diego – I should know, it is in the show, so he flew out from South Carolina to be with her. And when I say flew out, it is not quite “I just flew in from South Carolina and boy are my arms tired,” but it is "he hopped in his 2 seated, took his wife hostage, and flew his tiny plane from coast to coast." We discuss how he tried (and failed) to earn his father's respect by following in his footsteps and becoming a pilot. He shares a couple of absolutely terrifying stories of things that went wrong while in the air. And how he goaded me into taking a flight with him up the coast. Anyone who met me as an adult can't really bait me into doing things I don't want to do, but somehow, when people know you as a kid, the phrase “come on, chicken, I dare you” still has an undeniable pull. He tells of his 86-year-old dad still flying, but nobody was allowed to fly with him, how much it costs to own a plane, even if you never fly, and how he wooed his wife, or his dad did, sort of, early in the relationship.
My guest, Marc Summers, is a multi-faceted professional who has worn many hats in his career. We discuss these many hats, his preferences, how he has adapted to different roles, and much more.
