(The Center Square) – According to a professor who has studied public corruption, it might be a good thing that prosecutors are seeking $3.14 million in forfeiture proceeds from convicted former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. Connie Mixon, professor of political science and director of the Urban Studies Program at Elmhurst University, said convictions and prison sentences have not kept many of the state's elected officials from committing crimes up to this point. “We keep having these guilty corruption cases over and over and over again, but corruption persists,” Mixon told The Center Square.

“People may live in a place that's very different from us, but they have the same hopes, dreams, fears, and struggles with everyday life that we all do at some level. All the parents want education for their kids. Everyone wants a home, wants good food to eat, loves a good laugh and a good joke, loves to play and be silly together. If you find that out as a young person, you are less likely to quickly judge in a negative way someone who is different from you.”Nationally recognized as a leader in the field of youth choral conductors, Emily Ellsworth enjoys an active schedule as guest conductor and clinician both nationally and abroad. Guest: Bill Canady Guest Bio: Bill Canady has over 30 years of experience as a global business executive in a variety of industries and markets focused on industrial and consumer products and services. As a leader, he concentrates on aligning with key stakeholders to set a clear and compelling vision that will rally an organization to drive growth, control cost, and increase profitability. One of the keys to his success is he develops strong leaders and management teams and establishes deep relationships. His experience encompasses global public, private, and sponsor owned companies. Bill is the CEO of both OTC Industrial Technologies and Arrowhead Engineered Products (AEP). OTC is an industrial distribution company located in Columbus, OH, that has $1 billion in sales with 1,900+employees and over 60 sales/distribution offices in 40 states. During his tenure, OTC has grown revenues by more than 43% and earnings over 78%. AEP is a leading supplier of non-discretionary, mission-critical, aftermarket replacement parts for a wide variety of motorized vehicles and equipment headquartered in Blaine, MN, and has $1.5 billion in sales with 3600+ employees and sell in over 50 countries. During his career, Bill has been responsible for leading several organizations through their most important challenges and opportunities, often in complicated regulatory, investor, and media environments. He discovered a passion and knack for the art and science of business. Taking the tools and techniques that he developed for growing multibillion dollar companies, he created the Profitable Growth Operating System (PGOS) and set out to help owners and operators around the world profitably grow their companies. PGOS is a time-tested set of simple tools and process that fosters a common culture creating value for all stakeholders: customers, employees, suppliers, and shareholders. PGOS shows how to increase the productivity of assets, increase profits, and make better decisions at every level of a business. Bill graduated summa cum laude from Elmhurst University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and received his MBA from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. He is a veteran of the United States Navy. Guest Links: https://https//billcanady.com Key Points: Importance of Taking Risks: Bill stresses the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone. He believes that growth requires taking calculated risks and putting yourself out there. Developing Strong Leaders: As a CEO, Bill believes that leaders should set clear goals and let their teams figure out how to achieve them. His approach focuses on empowering leaders to take ownership of their responsibilities, rather than micromanaging them. This builds confidence and leadership skills in team members. A critical aspect of Bill's leadership style is the balance between providing direction (goal-setting) and giving teams autonomy to develop strategies. He compares leadership to being a parent—guiding without doing the work for the team, allowing them to take charge and develop their skills. Profitable Growth Operating System (PGOS): Bill's PGOS focuses on 5 key areas to drive profitable growth: Strategy (how to grow), Segmentation (80/20 analysis to focus on the most profitable opportunities), Talent (recruiting, retaining, and developing the right people), M&A (acquisitions to accelerate growth), and Lean (efficiency). His system is about using the right tools at the right time to grow a business profitably. A frequent mistake for business owners is failing to pivot when their company outgrows the early startup phase. Initially, they may take any job or customer, but as the business grows, they must focus on more strategic growth opportunities to ensure profitability. Recognizing when to transition and evolve the business model is crucial. Continued Business Growth: Business owners may take on more responsibilities that fall outside their expertise and eventually become overwhelmed. Business owners must recognize that they can't do everything themselves. They need to let go of tasks they're not good at and focus on their core competencies. Say no to tasks that aren't profitable or aligned with their core strengths. This allows for a more focused and scalable business model. As the business grows, it reaches a point where the owner must hire people, delegate control, and trust others with responsibilities. This is often a difficult transition, especially for entrepreneurs who are used to doing everything themselves. Focus on Core Competencies: Just as in business development, it's important to focus on what the business does best. Trying to serve everyone or do everything can dilute efforts. Defining an "ideal prospect" is a crucial first step. Case Study: One business owner, John, focused on doing great work with a small team and maintained steady growth. The other owner, while successful, failed to replicate his success at a larger scale. The second owner didn't focus on his core strengths or delegate effectively, which limited his ability to scale beyond his initial success. The successful business owner grew his business by focusing on what he did best—closing deals in a niche market. He scaled by hiring people to handle the rest, allowing him to focus on what he was most skilled at. One business grew substantially by replicating its success, while the other remained stagnant because the owner couldn't figure out how to scale or replicate himself. The key to scaling a business is taking calculated risks—trusting others, delegating, and focusing on what the business does best. Until an entrepreneur is willing to take that risk, they may remain stuck in a cycle of limited growth. Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger joins Nick Shepkowski in this episode of Fighting Irish Wired and gives you a bit of inspiration and motivation before sharing some of his stories from his time at Notre Dame. On October 13, the January 6th House Committee made it crystal clear that Donald Trump knew he had lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, but still deliberately pushed the lie that he had really won because the election was rigged. And so, he spawned the riotous insurrection that resulted in the U.S. Capitol being ransacked, several deaths, and delays in the eventual certification of the election results that made Biden's election official. It was all an attempt by Trump to grab power that he had lost by using supporters whom he had duped to force his way back into the presidency. It was no different than the vicious tactics such dictators as Putin employ to maintain ironclad control over their countries. While that hearing was underway, political philosopher and author Douglas Giles, on the Lean to the Left podcast, discussed in some detail the driving force behind the Republican Party and its right-wing supporters today: the concentration of power in the hands of the few.In fact, Giles acknowledged that perhaps the biggest lie of all is the contention by Republicans that they are the party of individual liberty and small government. Because, he argued, their ultimate goal is to expand governmental control over our daily lives. He used the GOP's effort to restrict abortion as an example of such governmental overreach."It's about power, and if you look at what the right wing is trying to do, it is trying to say that all of the power over the decision as to whether or not to have an abortion or to have a child rests in the power of the state, whereas the pro-choice position says no, the power should be broadly circulated to every single woman who is actually facing the question."Trump, he said, "is just coming from the social political dualism that is inherent in conservatism, that there should be a small set of people that are the 'haves', and everyone else is a 'have-not', and that's the good and proper way to run a society."Giles agreed that Trump is "very similar in a lot of respects" to Putin because of his determination to gain and expand his power. "Totalitarian governments are all about, by definition, concentrating power within the hands of a very small (group) or even just one person, and I would say that Trump and Putin are identical in that desire," he said.Giles, is the author of the new book, “What Left and Right Mean: Clarifying the Political Spectrum.” As a philosophy professor at Elmhurst University, he researches and writes on political philosophy and social justice issues. Giles was born and raised in the U.S., but has lived in Europe for the past 10 years, which he says has provided important insights into the natures of political ideologies and the causes of injustice. Coach Whitesell just completed year three as the leader of the Bulls. And, Buffalo has been one of the best mid-major basketball programs over the last decade. In the Chicagoland area, Coach Whitesell was the Head Coach at Elmhurst University, Lewis University, and Loyola University Chicago. Coach Whitesell had the pleasure to assist Coach Oats, Coach Steve Lavin (St. John's), and the late Coach Rick Majerus (St. Louis). And, wait to hear the ultimate respect that Jim describes working for Coach Majerus. It is pretty special. Coach Whitesell does an amazing job of presenting some tangible tips for young coaches. Coach Whitesell is a positive energy coach and you are going to feed off his energy. In addition, Coach Jim is also a meticulous note-taker and learner. Hello Dear listeners, I am happy to announce a new podcast episode on the topic “Self-care skills for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)” with an occupational therapist and a university professor Dr. Aditi Mehra. Dr. Aditi Mehra graduated with a bachelor's in occupational therapy, from Western Michigan University in 1998 and has a Doctorate in Health Sciences from Midwestern University in Illinois. She has practiced as a pediatric OT for the past 20+ years in various settings: early Intervention, hand therapy, inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation and school-settings. During her Doctoral Studies, Dr. Mehra also pursued a certification in Applied Behavior Analysis to improve and enhance collaboration within multidisciplinary teams. Once she delved deeper into this branch of Psychology, Dr. Mehra uncovered Fit Learning, an academic program based on the principles of Precision Teaching designed to build fluency and address all differences in learning (Executive Functioning, ADHD etc.). Dr. Mehra is currently the Director of Fit Learning Labs in Chicago, and London. She continues to practice OT in the school setting, hosts a YouTube channel and is also an adjunct professor at Elmhurst University. Her passion is rooted in using simple data collection process to make more progress and save time and can be found on her website: https://dradititheot.com/ We made our discussion practical and discussed different cases from our everyday practice. Thus, what we have discussed: what are self-care skills and what factors can influence the participation in these activities among people with ASD, the sensory issues and the importance of adapting to some sensory stimuli or modifying the environment to minimize the possibility of sensory overload, different examples from our practice about dressing, washing, toileting skills and difficulties parents can face raising a child with ASD, the transition from childhood to adulthood, etc. Participating in self-care activities is an important part of our life. The independence and confidence improve our quality of life and affect our self-esteem. The independent functioning in these activities can be limited among people with ASD due to a range of factors. Consequently, knowing these factors, we can analyze the situation and support people with ASD. I would be delighted if you could find some answers to your questions. Thank you for attention!
