D.B. Cooper's 1971 airplane hijacking did more than just create an American crime legend: He inspired copycats, including in St. Louis in 1972. The St. Louis caper forms the core of University of Missouri history professor John Wigger's new book, “The Hijacking of American Flight 119: How D.B. Cooper Inspired a Skyjacking Craze and the FBI's Battle to Stop It." Wigger interviewed McNally, who was released from federal prison in 2010, and more than a dozen retired FBI agents. Wigger spoke with St. Louis on the Air producer Danny Wicentowski.

Remember, anything with stitches can be mended!

Am Sonntag beginnt in Katar die Fussball-Weltmeisterschaft. Eine WM, die von Skandalen überschattet wird. Es lohne sich, genau nach Katar zu schauen. Denn vielleicht seien im konservativen Golf-Emirat gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen möglich, sagt Nahost-Kenner Leo Wigger im «Tagesgespräch». Katar ist auf der Weltkarte ein Winzling mit nicht einmal drei Millionen Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern. Es ist kein grosses Fussballland. Im Wüstenstaat ist es sehr heiss, sogar im Winter. Für die Fussball-WM wurden extra sechs neue Stadien gebaut – die danach nicht mehr gebraucht werden. Beim Bau der Stadien kamen viele Gastarbeiter ums Leben. Im Land sind die Rechte der LGBTQ-Community nicht garantiert. Homosexualität ist verboten. Die katarischen Frauen haben weniger Rechte als die Männer. Und ausserdem ist Katar das Land mit dem höchsten CO2-Ausstoss pro Kopf – weltweit. Die Liste der Kritikpunkte ist also lang. Und bereits die Vergabe der WM war umstritten, weil Katar von allen Bewerbern am schlechtesten abgeschnitten hatte. Deshalb wurden immer wieder Rufe nach einem WM-Boykott laut. Doch nun beginnt die Weltmeisterschaft – an der auch die Schweiz teilnimmt. Es sei richtig und wichtig, die Probleme der aktuellen WM anzusprechen, sagt dazu Leo Wigger. Wigger arbeitet für das Nahost-Magazin «Zenith» und hat mit einem Co-Autor das Buch: «Katar 2022: So eine WM gab es noch nie» geschrieben. Gleichzeitig gebe es auch die Hoffnung, dass sich gewisse Dinge in Katar auch zum Besseren entwickeln, sagt Wigger im «Tagesgespräch». Er ist zu Gast bei Rafael von Matt.

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression that have been implicated in a plethora of neuronal processes. Nevertheless, their role in regulating brain activity in the context of sleep has so far received little attention. To test their involvement, we deleted mature miRNAs in post-mitotic neurons at two developmental ages, i.e., in early adulthood using conditional Dicer knockout (cKO) mice and in adult mice using an inducible conditional Dicer cKO (icKO) line. In both models, electroencephalographic (EEG) activity was affected and the response to sleep deprivation (SD), altered; while rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMS) rebound was compromised in both, EEG delta (1-4 Hz) power during non-REM sleep (NREMS) was reduced in cKO mice and increased in icKO mice. We subsequently investigated the effects of SD on the miRNA transcriptome and found that the expression of 48 forebrain miRNAs was affected, in particular, the activity-dependent miRNA miR-709. In vivo inhibition of miR-709 in the brain increased EEG power during NREMS in the slow-delta (0.75-1.75 Hz) range, particularly after periods of prolonged wakefulness. Transcriptome analysis of primary cortical neurons in vitro revealed that miR-709 regulates endosomal trafficking and glutamatergic receptor activity. A subset of the genes involved in glutamatergic transmission was affected also in the cortices of sleep-deprived, miR-709-inhibited mice. Our data implicate miRNAs in the regulation of EEG activity and indicate that miR-709 links neuronal excitability during wakefulness to brain synchrony during sleep, likely through the regulation of endosomal trafficking and glutamatergic signaling.     Hip Hop, the mutant music genre that often changes  like the seasons of the year. You just never know what new fad, slang, liquor, production style, audience, fashion or artist will be hot year to year. There has been a trend bubbling the last few years that has been addressed elsewhere, but I guess it's high time I tackle it. It's the white rapper, and things are looking up for those guys more and more.   Consider first that the white rapper IS NOTHING NEW. I know recent history tells us that EMINEM is by far the most POPULAR white rapper ever, but he had a few predecessors. To act like Search from 3rd Bass, Vanilla Ice, House of Pain and more never existed is a slap in the face of hip hop, period.  But there was always the tag in front of the name, we called them WHITE RAPPERS. Well, see that is because there were not that many, and that is where things are RAPIDLY changing.  I have no problem with white rappers at all, as long as they are real to themselves. See, being a white rapper, there is a 90% chance you will be tagged as “WIGGER” instead of an MC that just happens to be white. It's not fair but it's reality, and that is what I tend to deal in. When you consider one of the nicest, if not THE nicest MC of the last decade was white, you can never say they CAN'T take over. It has already been done by one of them and he locked it down for a long stretch.   Bottom line the white rappers are gaining ground in marketability, profit margins, fan base, and numbers. When you think about that fact that most of the people that were buying hip hop albums back in the days when people still BOUGHT hip hop albums were WHITE, none of this should be a shock. I have some associates and friends that are white people. Even though about 95% of them are black, the 5% of them that are white are cool folks. But I notice that there is a difference between some of the white people I interact with. Some of them are simply white people who are not racist and then you have some that straight up "ACT BLAC...K". I'm from the south where we still have a wide range of race issues. That is what it is, but for some reason when white people have more friends that they hang around that are black, well some things will eventually rub off on them. I think almost every black person from the hood knows at least one white person the hood accepted and they were always around. They earned their stripes and passes to be viewed differently. Unforntunately white people who "act black" get branded by a term, it's called "WIGGER" wich is worse then being called "NI**ER" because it says that just because you don't "act like your skin says you should you are then "downgraded" to a term used in a very hatefull way. Just like blacks that "act white" get branded a "sell out", I think whites that act black, or even just associate with a lot of blacks have it hard, but then this is AMERIKKKA. So here goes: 1) WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHITES THAT MOSTLY HANG AROUND BLACKS OR "ACT BLACK" 2) IS USING THE TERM "ACTING BLACK" RACIST TO YOU? 3) DO YOU THINK WHITES THAT ONLY DATE BLACKS OR OTHERS ARE SELL OUTS, LIKE THEY CALL BLACKS WHO DO VICE VERSA? 4) DO YOU THINK WHITES WHO HANG AROUND MOSTLY BLACKS SHOULD GET A PASS FOR USING THE WORD NIGGA? 5) WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A "WIGGER" AND A WHITE PERSON THAT JUST ISNT RACIST?
