Our guest this week is Kristian Woodmansee, Kristian is a black belt under Andre Galvao of Atos Jiu-Jitsu, owner of Logic Jiu-Jitsu in Philly, & a multiple-time gold medal winner at IBJJF Worlds, Pans, & Europeans. In this episode, we focused on making a living from jiu-jitsu, competing & training full time, getting into teaching, sponsorships, & on opening an academy. Q1: How did you originally get started in jiu-jitsu? - 1:32 Q2: Was there a moment when you were training jiu-jitsu when you thought I'm going to do this full-time, or was it something that happened organically? - 4:08 Q3: How did you end up at Atos? You trained at some other gyms before ending up in San Diego. Tell us about that journey. - 5:40 Q4: Why didn't you want to teach (when first arriving at Atos)? Did you feel it was taking away from competing? - 7:29 Q5: How far into your time at Atos did you start teaching? - 9:14 Q6: What are some things that you do differently from other instructors? - 10:40 Q7: Do you think the way you teach conceptually is what drives the success of your seminars? - 12:06 Q8: What advice would you give young black belts who are looking to teach more seminars? - 13:54 Q9: Did you have prior experience with the financial side of the business before setting up seminars, or is that something you learned throughout the process of setting up seminars? - 16:23 Q10: What were some of the things that helped you financially as a competitor, outside of teaching? - 18:19 Q11: What advice would you give to someone who's looking for sponsors but maybe they're going the traditional route looking at gi companies, or just companies that are very well-tied into the jiu-jitsu scene? How do you approach non-jiu-jitsu related businesses? - 23:20 Q12: Can you talk about the transition from chasing the highest level of the sport as a competitor to opening your academy? Did you make that transition consciously? - 26:14 Q13: No-gi is really big on the East Coast. When you went to Atos in Cali was that something you noticed? That gi was bigger on the West Coast & no-gi was bigger on the East Coast? - 31:18 Q14: Have you been keeping up with ADCC Trials? - 34:02 Q15: Did you happen to see Gordon Ryan's post after the Brazilian Trials? - 35:17 Q16: Mo Jassim is really pushing the sport forward with ADCC. What do you think needs to happen on the gi side to see that same sort of growth? - 40:14 You can follow Danny on twitter @DannyOD_BJJ, or insta @dannyod_bjj. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Erin Harpe“When I listen to the blues, it makes me want to cry—it’s a part of me—but before making this album, I felt I was neglecting the acoustic blues woman in me,” award-winning blues artist and educator Erin Harpe shares. Erin proudly acknowledges the acoustic blues woman in her with the return-to-roots duo record, Meet Me In The Middle, out now on VizzTone/Juicy Juju Records! It is an album of joyous music made for desperate times. The Boston-based multi-band leader producer, indie label owner, singer-songwriter, and guitarist leads the electric blues quartet Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers with her husband and label co-owner, bass player Jim Countryman. This outfit has released three well-received albums. The couple also founded the neo-new wave-y Afro-pop group, Lovewhip, which has released four critically-acclaimed albums. Erin has issued a pair of acoustic blues albums, and maintains an acoustic blues duo with Jim playfully nicknamed “CBD,” Country Blues Duo. In addition, Erin is also an in-demand fingerstyle blues educator who in 2016 released the DVD Women of the Country Blues Guitar through the esteemed Stefan Grossman’s Guitar Workshop.Erin Harpe,Hard Luck Woman,Meet Me In The MiddleErin Harpe,What's the Matter With The Mill,Meet Me In The Middlemakingascene,Erin Harpe,Erin Harpe,I Hate That Train Called the M&O,Meet Me In The MiddleErin Harpe,When I Lay My Burden Down,Meet Me In The Middle

We saw Big slams from viera and an off of the stage in a double leg from Guedes, an Uchi mata to toe hold and great heel hook counters. We talk about the Tubby Alequin vs Nathalie Ribeiro match for the 135 No-Gi title, and some of the controversy of the decision. In Talita Alencar vs Gabrielle Mc Comb for the 125 No-Gi title we talk about why this is Fight Of The Night for the Black Belts in bell to bell action that never saw a slowdown of pace. We talk about the changes that Alencar has made to facilitate her being able to keep the sustained high pace throughout matches, and speculate if this will be a lasting change in her game. We recap Luanna Alzuguir vs Hanette Staack for the 145 No-Gi title, we discuss the difference of approach and Lunnna early guillotine and kimura attempts from the half, plus her back escape and back to chest reversal. The next hour of The Roadhouse will be well worth your while with some ragtime-like blues, some very contemporary blues, and a long set of blues rock. Kim Wilson, Jack De Kyzer, Erin Harpe, Nora Jean Wallace, and Shemkia Copeland fit the pieces together pretty well, I think, to come up with another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Last Show of 2017. We close the year with three Couch Kids... and honor The Women In Blues! Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers have a new album entitled Big Road. Erin returns to The Couch to talk about the new music and all the cool things happening for she and the band. Samantha Fish was on earlier this year for her release, Chills & Fever. Well, she has just released Belle Of The West, and IF she gets back from Europe in time, she will join us again to talk about the new music and more. Pam Taylor has also released a new album, Steal Your Heart and she'll come by and we'll talk and listen. Then, I willl give my wrap to 2017 and play the song that made me smile the most in 2017...

Live, Uncut & Uncensored Converations With "Musicians You Should Know" Carolyn Fe comes by for the COUCH KID NEWS segment to give some thanks for her album being named "International Release Of The Year" for the Jimi Awards. Georgie Bonds is a Philadelphis, PA native who was a part of the storied Black Cowboys organization. While working as a blacksmith, Georgie would play his guitar and make up songs. That led to playing with the likes of Hubert Sumlin, Koko Taylor, Jimmy Vaughn and many others. He released his debut album in 2001. It took until 2013 for his second, Stepping Into Time to be released. I'll speak with Georgie and find out more about the obstacles he has faced along the way and his determination to keep moving forward. This is a great story. George Taylor has spent time in the Delta perfecting his art, had the honor of being invited to do an interview with the legendary Sonny Paine and lived in Austin where he recorded his second album, Rain Or Shine. The album is a collection of 10 originals that show the depth of Taylor's lyrical style and his wonderful melodies. Altered Five Blues Band are Jeff Taylor, Jeff Schroedl, Mark Solveson, Scott Schroedl and Raymond Tevich and this Milwaukee based band's third album, Cryin' Mercy has been produced by Tom Hambridge. I will speak with the guys and find out about ther journies to come together and thier new music. Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers (JIm Countryman, Bob Nisi and Richard Rosenblatt) have a new album entitled Love Whip Blues and we will chat with them during the Couch Kid New Music Segment of the show. They're on the way to Memphis for the 2015IBC

Among his many accomplishments are a number of definitive books on the genre, as well as pivotal roles in some of the most celebrated music museums in the world, including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Experience Music Project in Seattle. In anticipation of Robert’s upcoming speech in Saint Louis for the National Blues Museum, they sat down to discuss his museum work, the influence (and lack of influence) the blues has had on popular music, his writing, and the special things that make music museums truly great. It’s also a great read you can find the link to it in this week’s write up. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/09/robert-santelli/ Also in American Blues Scene this week is an article about the CAll and Response Symposium at the King Biscuit Festival in Helena Ark on the 12th of October. Its restoration came through $30,000 donated to the Louisiana Museum Foundation. Read more about it here: http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/05/fats-dominos-katrina-damaged-piano-restored/ The Ct music scene lost one of its own this past weekend. Grayson Minney, the lead singer and guitarist for the group Columbia Fields, was killed in a car crash early Saturday morning. According to police, Minney was on Route 85 in Hebron around 3:40 a.m. when he apparently lost control of his car. The car struck a guardrail, went airborne, and crashed into two large trees. Columbia Fields, and Grayson Minney, have long been fixtures on the Connecticut music scene. In 2010 the group won a competition to open for Bon Jovi at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Columbia Fields also won the Hartford Advocate’s “Best Indie Band” award in 2008, 2009, and 2010. More recently, Grayson Minney was involved with the “Downtown Rocks For Newtown” benefit. Black-Eyed News: Story 1)I went light on the news this week to allow for all of the music so the first item up is the list of people playing at the Inauguration and the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball as given to us by our friends at Rolling Stone magazine. The list is pretty interesting Lady Gaga, Brad Paisley, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys among some at the Inauguration. At the Commander-in Chief’s Ball which is an event in honor of the Armed Forces some of the participants include Beyonce, James Taylor and Kelly Clarkson http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/report-lady-gaga-to-perform-at-inaugural-ball-20130119 And as promised, the funny but inadvertent photo-bombing of Kelly Clarkson by President Clinton. Photo Credit ABC News Story 2) As you know I am a huge fan of American Blues Scene’s website so much so that we here at OnTheHorn.com sent them money for their pledge drive so they can actually start printing a magazine. They had an interesting piece about cover versions of songs and the legal issues involved with the process of using someone elses music. The article was good and eyeopening without getting bogged down in legalise. I will post the link to it in my weekly write up for those of you that are interested. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/01/blues-law-a-little-bird-told-me-cover-versions/ Story 3) The Taste of Hartford started last night and runs through February 3rd. There are 36 restaurants taking part in the 2-week event please call to get reservations or you may get shut out of your favorite place.
