Along the way, she discovered her passion for educating and empowering moms through natural living and built her first business in the network marketing space with essential oils. But once she became a mom herself, the endless hustle for pocket-money commissions and chasing end-of-month numbers no longer aligned with her purpose. In her quest to upgrade her family's health, Desiree invested in a Kangen Water machine, and everything clicked. She found not only the foundation of true wellness but also a business model that allowed her to create abundant income while making a bigger impact on families worldwide. She now mentors moms in building both health and legacy wealth, proving that freedom and financial success can go hand in hand. Today, as the founder of Life Essentials, Desiree has built a personal brand that reflects her mission of empowering moms to transform their health and create long-term legacy wealth, no matter where in the world they live. Together with Iva, she co-hosts of the Mom Bosses Abroad podcast, where they inspire women to design a life of freedom, purpose, and harmony. Now based in Tokyo with her husband and two little ones, Desiree loves all things Japanese and never misses a chance to celebrate life's little wins—sometimes with a well-deserved glass of wine in hand. With practical tips on making friends, cherishing couple time, and knowing when to seek support, this episode is a gentle reminder that while expat life can be challenging, it's also a unique chance to grow, connect, and rediscover yourself.Footnotes

There are many reasons a family might choose to move abroad. In the case of Americans, that reason is generally motivated by a desire for adventure, change, new scenery, unfamiliar culture, a slower pace of living, or just plain fun. But not always. Today we sit down with friend of the show and past guest Jennie Spohr, a Seattleite historical fiction writer who chose to pack up her life, leave her home country, and move to Ireland with her family for political reasons. And there's a plot twist... What could be harder than convincing your teen and pre-teen kids to leave their friends, their school, and practically every aspect of their life and move to a new country? Convincing your ex-husband to come too. Don't miss this surprising and entertaining episode. It feels like forever since my last solo episode! After our wonderful Global Woman Summer Series, I'm back with some deeply personal reflections from what has been the most amazing and intensive summer. This summer was intense, inspiring, and unforgettable. Between road-tripping through California, a 48-hour visit to Rio, hosting a coaching dinner for 26 women in London, and saying yes to my very first TV interview, I realized there's so much I want to share with you as we transition into this new season. In this episode, I break down five major reflections that stood out for me and what I'm taking into the fall. These insights are for you if you're someone with a busy, packed life who struggles to hear your inner voice, if you're seeking the right community to accelerate your growth, or if you're someone who adapts easily but wants to build a stronger inner foundation. And more importantly, if you're ready to recognize that you might already be living elements of your dream life RIGHT NOW. I also share why I'm focusing more on This Expat Life and growing this community - because I want to connect with YOU more!

We've all heard it. We've all said it. But what does "when in Rome" really mean? Katy reveals the somewhat surprising origin of this ubiquitous catch-phrase, which has become the title of more Rome-based rom-coms and expat memoirs than we could count. Tiffany and Katy have different opinions of the meaning of this cliché expression, and we end up down a rabbit hole discussing the correct way to use it. (And if Tiffany lives by it, since she does, in fact, live in Rome.) She also reveals some of the other most common sayings about the Eternal City. Send me a Text Message! My much-anticipated AIMA appointment has been postponed! Instead of August, I'll now be waiting until the end of October. It's also been moved to Porto, not Viana do Castelo. Send us a textThe invisible chain that follows every American abroad isn't nostalgia—it's the IRS. Unlike citizens of virtually every other nation, Americans must file tax returns no matter where they build their lives, creating a bureaucratic burden that turns paradise into paperwork. This final episode of Leaving America dives deep into the unique tax situation facing U.S. citizens abroad. We explore the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion that shields most expats from actually paying U.S. taxes, but doesn't protect them from the annual filing requirement. We unpack FATCA—the law that turned Americans into toxic banking clients by forcing foreign financial institutions to report directly to the IRS or face severe penalties. Many expats now pay thousands to accountants just to file zero-balance returns. For some, this perpetual tether becomes too much to bear, leading to citizenship renunciation—the ultimate step in cutting ties with America. We walk through this process step by step: the $2,350 fee, the embassy appointment, the potential "exit tax" for higher-net-worth individuals, and what happens to Social Security and Medicare benefits afterward. Is freedom from IRS paperwork worth giving up your blue passport?Throughout the episode, experts like Tim Marting from Citizen Remote, David Lesperance from Lesperance Associates, Adrian Leeds from House Hunters International, and Basil Mohr-Elzeki from Henley & Partners offer insights on navigating these complex waters. We close with reflections from expats who've found their homes abroad, whether they've kept their U.S. citizenship or decided to let it go.Featuring:Tim MartingDavid LesperanceBasil Mohr-ElzekiMatt WilsonKaren McCannRichard McCollTim LeffellAdrian Leeds-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock
Meet Tim,Who met his Mexican wife at work in the US, at the time none spoke each other's language, but still they pushed through one word at the time. His wife, who already had children back in Mexico, had to go back to take care of them, and that's when their 18 year long distance relationship started, with children that he did not see grow up. During those 18 years, Tim managed to go visit her in Mexico 3 times, this by walking, yes walking across the US, until he eventually moved full time to Acapulco a year ago. On this episode of Nomadic Diaries, host Doreen Cumberford sat down with Chris O'Shaughnessy to explore the latest trends, challenges, and insights from the expat and globally nomadic community. From the impact of geopolitics on relocation patterns to the nuances of repatriation and the ever-present topic of belonging, the conversation is packed with truth bombs and practical wisdom for anyone navigating international lifestyles.1. Trends Among Expats & International MovesGeopolitical instability is causing unexpected relocations and higher uncertainty for expatriates.More organizations are planning ahead or reacting quickly to global shifts, leading to both planned and rapid transitions.Repatriation—unexpected and often more challenging than outbound moves—is a significant and growing concern.2. Navigating Uncertainty & ChangeUncertainty is ever-present; dealing with unplanned change is top of mind.Quick transitions have become more common, with increased requests for guidance on managing these changes. The speed of change, rather than the change itself, is what tends to be most destabilizing.3. Advice for Handling ChangeProcessing our intuitive reactions to change intellectually—taking time to name and break down sources of stress—can lead to better coping strategies.Understanding and identifying different types of resilience (cognitive, relational, motivational) can help individuals address specific stresses more effectively.Leveraging “leaky perception”: Changing our environment or perspective can shift our experience and stress response.4. Shifts in International School CommunitiesGrowing emphasis on student leadership and ownership in schools with international populations.Empowering students to act on new concepts and become advocates within their communities.Use of student ambassador programs and increased creativity from younger generations in addressing unprecedented global challenges.5. The Evolving Concept of BelongingBelonging is an increasingly important (and complex) topic as changes in language, technology, and society shift how we understand and express it.Technology is both a challenge and a tool for fostering interdependence and belonging.New generations are redefining what belonging looks like, shaped by navigating multiple unprecedented events.6. Recommended ResourcesChris O'Shaughnessy's book: Arrivals, Departures and the Adventures In BetweenMention of TED talks by Rory Sutherland, specifically around the concept of "leaky perception."Memorable Quotes“Repatriation is often seen as harder than an actual move.”“The speed of change throws us off.”“Perception is leaky—and we can use this to our advantage.”“The best advocates for their own communities are the students themselves.”Resources & Further ReadingChris's book: Arrivals, Departures and the Adventures In-Betweenhttps://www.amazon.com/Arrivals-Departures-Adventures-Christopher-OShaughnessy/dp/1909193720Atlas of the Heart by Brene BrownMindset by Carol DweckCritical Conversations by Joseph GrennyLetters Now Sent by Megan C. Can you remember the first time you were truly frightened—by a movie, a ghost story, or even a real event that you witnessed? On this episode, Katy and Tiffany delve back into their earliest memories to come up with the first instances of true fear that they experienced—and most of the time they can laugh at them now. We also wonder: can one instance of being horrified in childhood create lasting trauma throughout your life? And will we ever be able to understand why so many seemingly innocuous things frighten children so much? Join us for this fun discussion! ***Katy's sister Dana has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 agressive brain cancer. To help with the staggering medical costs—her specialist is outside her insurance network—as well of the costs of temporarily relocating to San Francsico for her treatments, please consider donating to her GoFundMe.
